Even as the overall mood is upbeat after the Budget, there’s something that has left both the <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> and angels in the country feeling irked. Both have different reasons for their worries. 

	The Angel community, although happy to see startups get 100% exemption for 3 years on profits, feels the Budget should also have ended the unfavorable treatment in investments made in unlisted companies by Alternative Investment Funds and Angel Groups.
 Currently, <keyword id="6365770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="angel-investors">angel investors</keyword> pay a much higher tax on capital gains while taking a far higher risk as compared to publicly traded shares. Investments in unlisted companies or startups is taxed at 33% for short term and at 20 per cent for long term capital gains, with the holding period for long term capital gains as 3 years. In this Budget, the government has lowered the period from 3 to 2 years. Still, investors feel this anomaly can make the sector look unattractive at a time when investing in startups is already considered a risky bet. “We would have benefitted if capital gains tax regime for unlisted companies was aligned with that for listed companies. This would end the discrimination against domestic venture capital funds as foreign funds anyway pay no capital gains tax by investing from Mauritius and other treaty friendly countries,” said <keyword id="164917" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saurabh-Srivastava">Saurabh Srivastava</keyword>, a serial entrepreneur, angel investor and VC. Another angel investor Padmaja Ruparel said: “Capital gains Tax exemption in regulated/ notified fund of funds, lowering the period from 3 years to 2 years for Long term Capital Gains in unlisted companies, <keyword id="3269156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SETU-fund">SETU fund</keyword> of Rs. 1000 cr, one day registration process for start-ups will all help to boost innovation and incubation. But, we had hoped that treating investments by AIFs and angel groups in unlisted companies would be aligned with the public market equity tax regime.” 

	Meanwhile. Startups were expecting more radical reforms in the Budget. “We welcome the the three-year tax holiday, but the fact that the Budget has retained MAT negates much of the advantages, as we have cash-flow problems in initial years," said Ravi Gururaj, chairman of Nascomm Product Council.

 A recent survey jointly conducted by ixigo.com, India’s leading travel planning and search engine firm, and <keyword id="136437" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lemon-Tree-Hotels">Lemon Tree Hotels</keyword>, the country’s third largest hotel company by owned rooms, says that there has been a marked change in travel trends across the country. <keyword id="2144559" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Female-travellers">Female travellers</keyword> are now an increasingly important segment of the Indian travel market, for both leisure and business travel, and the country’s travel industry is just waking up to that fact. 
 
“With women climbing the corporate ladder and becoming more independent, travel is becoming an intrinsic part of their lives. Also, only-women travel groups offering interesting holiday destinations and packages are luring women to take up travel. Our survey indicates 26% women travel with their girl gangs to explore new places,” said Saurabh Srivastava, VP (marketing &amp; product strategy) at ixigo.com. 
 More than 550 women aged between 25 and 45 and hailing from different metros across the country, took part in <keyword id="2144531" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-ixigo-Lemon-Tree-Hotels">the ixigo-Lemon Tree Hotels</keyword> online survey. 
 
At present, women-only travellers don’t form too large a segment of India’s travel market but the concept of vacationing away from one’s family (to say nothing of business travel) is catching up fast. As per Trafalgar India, one of the leading guided holiday operators, there has been 22% rise in bookings by women’s groups and single travellers in India between October 2013 and February 2014, compared to last year. 
 While women now account for more than 23% of business travellers (both domestic and outbound), the number will grow significantly in the near future, with the rise in the number of women in mid-senior executive ranks where business travel is a necessity. Over the next 20 years, <keyword id="2144563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="International-business-travel">international business travel</keyword> by Indian women could grow almost tenfold to more than 10 million annual business departures, according to industry estimates. 
 <keyword id="2144565" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Group-travel-by-women">Group travel by women</keyword> is also gaining in popularity, thanks to a growing number of social clubs offering secure and affordable women-only tours. The bottom line is quite simple here. In a fast-moving life ruled by many priorities, one is not always able to travel with <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword>, family or relatives. But that should not hinder a woman from travelling at her convenience, to the destination of her choice. 
 
A separate survey by Trafalgar India indicates that 10% women prefer guided vacations for a guided experience, 30% for safety, 11% to meet new people, 26% for convenience and comfort while 23% women find it cost-effective. 
 
 
 
What women want The <keyword id="2144532" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ixigo-Lemon-Tree-Hotels-survey">ixigo-Lemon Tree Hotels survey</keyword> has delved deep into women’s way of travelling and the comfort factors they look for. Here are the key findings when it comes to women wanting to travel safe and solo. 
 
Female travellers are tech-savvy: Indian women travel as frequently as once in two months (50%), with 43% booking their <keyword id="6368036" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hotels">hotels</keyword> online and 65-76% saying they only read user reviews and endorsements to make their final choice, the survey says. <keyword id="383661" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobile-Apps">Mobile apps</keyword> are clearly the way to go as 56% women use <keyword id="616640" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smartphone-apps">smartphone apps</keyword> to find information about their destinations and plan their trips. 
 
Safety &amp; comfort top priority list: For 41% women, facilities and services are the top considerations while choosing a hotel while location, cost and security have come out as other important criteria. Although security as an independent variable does not top the priority list of solo women travellers/women-only travel groups, there are clearly other surrogate considerations that indicate that safety remains a big concern. For instance, 34% women prefer to have <keyword id="2144581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Female-hostesses-for-room-service">female hostesses for room service</keyword> while others look for a wide range of <keyword id="2144582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Women-friendly-amenities">women-friendly amenities</keyword> including <keyword id="2144583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Call-screening-facility">call-screening facility</keyword> (20%), <keyword id="2144584" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Women-driven-cabs">women-driven cabs</keyword> (19%) and separate floors/wings for women (18%). Interestingly, more than 63% of the respondents say they need a companion to be able to feel comfortable enough to drink at a hotel bar. 
 
Feel-good add-ons matter: Well, that’s a given and who doesn’t love the nice, little extras? When asked about exclusive redemption options offered on loyalty programmes, <keyword id="2144587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shopping-vouchers">shopping vouchers</keyword> have come up as the most favourite (27%), closely followed by <keyword id="2144589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Room-nights">room nights</keyword> (24%) and <keyword id="891808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spa-therapy">spa therapy</keyword> (22%) – clearly indicating that special benefits and exclusive offers go hand in hand with women. On the amenities front, 24x7 room service is the most important one (voted by 24% women) while <keyword id="6403839" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Free-Wi-Fi">free Wi-Fi</keyword> (18%), <keyword id="6354337" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="gym">gym</keyword>, <keyword id="50883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swimming-Pool">swimming pool</keyword>, <keyword id="5680" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="spa">spa</keyword> and <keyword id="34615" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="restaurants">restaurants</keyword> are some others factors that would make the stay memorable. 
 
End-note: Older women are travelling more 
This finding is not a part of the above survey but going by the fact that it has considered women aged between 25 and 45, instead of the 18-30 or 25-40 age bracket is a clear indicator that older women are calling the shots in travel space, making decision for themselves as well as for friends and families, and spending their own money for solo trips – be it a prestigious presentation, a professional seminar, visiting a beautiful place or simply chilling out to get the better of stress. According to Marybeth Bond of The Gutsy Traveller – The average adventure traveller is not a 28-year-old male, but a 47-year-old female. And she wears a size 12 dress. 
 Moreover, the findings from the above surveys amply tell us what <keyword id="625381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="women-travellers">women travellers</keyword> expect and how fast the women-only travel market is growing in India. These surely promise more travel spend (both for business and leisure travel), better business across the country and an <keyword id="2144592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Improved-travel-experience">improved travel experience</keyword> for women who love to do it solo and keep off the beaten path.

Following the honey adulteration controversy, Dabur launches 'Organic Honey' which is 'untouched by chemicals'

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Startups on Saturday welcomed the Budget proposal of relaxing ESOPs taxation, but said linking it to Section 80-IAC will limit its impact to a small section of startups.
"The relaxation for ESOP taxation was welcome but linking it to Sec 80-IAC makes it meaningless as it impacts only a 100 odd startups. We had requested for this to apply to all DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) registered startups. I do hope they correct that urgently," Indian Angel Network Chairman Saurabh Srivastava said in a statement.
During her Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed easing of tax payments for startups - a decision which has been hailed by budding entrepreneurs.
"In order to give a boost to startup ecosystem, I propose to ease the burden of taxation on the employees by deferring the tax payment by five years or till they leave the company or when they sell, whichever is earliest," she said while presenting the Union Budget for 2020-21.
Employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a significant component of compensation for these employees, she said. Currently, it is taxable.
"This leads to cash flow problem for the employees who do not sell their shares immediately and continue to hold the same for long term," she said.
During their formative years, startups generally use ESOPs to attract and retain highly talented employees, she added.
Orios Venture Partners' Rehan Yar Khan said it is good that entry level capital gains had been differed to five year, exit or sale, whichever sooner. "Not Good: Yet need to pay entry level capital gains in 5 yrs if yet with company. The exemption only applies to Startups registered with IMB," he tweeted.
LocalCircles head Sachin Taparia tweeted: "This benefit seems to be extended to only startups incorporated after April 1, 2016. Needs to be extended to all startups that are eligible for #angeltax benefit. Also, need to make #esop taxable at sale without the 2 other conditions of 5 years or employee exit". SR BAL

Online marketplace <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is all set to start delivering farm produce, lentils and milk to its customers in India, once it gets the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-has-allowed-100-per-cent-FDI-in-food-ecommerce-and-a-warzone-has-already-been-formed/articleshow/52848943.cms">government's approval</a> for its wholly-owned foods unit. 
 
It was in 2007 that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Amazon-might-be-on-the-verge-of-dominating-a-795-billion-industry/articleshow/51986500.cms">Amazon</a> had started <keyword id="2421691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon-Fresh">Amazon Fresh</keyword> to deliver a limited selection of <keyword id="389479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="groceries">groceries</keyword> to its customers in Seattle, where it’s based, and a decade later, Amazon is waiting for the <keyword id="44749" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foreign-Direct-Investment">Foreign Direct Investment</keyword> approval to be able to do that in India.

"We will maintain the entire supply chain directly and right sourcing will be the key. He added that the products would be directly bought from farmers.

Amazon could be delivering groceries to your doorstep after FDI approval

Lending institution, <keyword id="104385" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Industries-Development-Bank-of-India">Small Industries Development Bank of India</keyword> (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SIDBI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">SIDBI</a>), recently cleared the sanction requests of nine funds aggregating Rs 300 crore. This move was made to show a significant upsurge in the fund of funds operations focused on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MSME&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MSME</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startups&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startups</a>. SIDBI manages several fund of funds, including the Rs 10,000 crore corpus kept for <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>. As a manager of these funds, it had constituted a (<keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="venture-capital">Venture Capital</keyword> Investment Committee (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=VCIC&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">VCIC</a>), which includes experts like Mohandas Pai, Sanjeev Bikchandani, Saurabh Srivastava, H.K.Mittal, Prof. Vaidyanathan, Kiran Karnik. 
 
SIBDI has seen a surge in the fund of funds operations as seen from the number of funds supported by SIDBI during the current financial year. During <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FY15&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">FY15</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=FY16&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">FY16</a>, sanctions were made to 11 funds (Rs 314 crore) and 16 funds (Rs 607 crore), respectively while the number during the current FY has already crossed Rs 1112 crore to 30 funds. 
 
The government had announced establishment of Rs 10,000 crore fund of funds to support AIFs who invest in Startups. This money will be released spread over two finance commission cycles (14th and 15th till 2025) based on the scheme’s progress. An amount of Rs 500 crore has been released so far to SIDBI which is managing the programme.

Focus on MSME, startups increases, Rs 300 crore funds sanctioned

<keyword id="948730" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="angel-investment">Angel investment</keyword> in Indian startups hit a five-year high in the year that ended in March 2016. While venture capital firms may appear to be stumbling, existing angel investors are pumping in serious money into Indian startups. 
 “4-5 years ago, there wasn’t enough money available. As more entrepreneurs are turning angels, the money has increased. Also, more people are willing to risk being an entrepreneur. As more good entrepreneurs are out, more people are willing to invest. It’s a cycle.” Saurabh Srivastava from <keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword> smiles. 
 
According to a recent report by venture debt firm InnoVen Capital, angel investment in India in FY16 stood at a whopping Rs.113.6 Crores over 69 deals. That’s a 62% hike in deal value and 47% in deal volume from last year. 
 
VC (Venture Capital) firms have turned increasingly cautious about their bets since late last year. This has forced several startups to shutdown or rollback. However, angel investors remained upbeat. Angel investments initially slumped from the June quarter of 2015 to Rs.20.19 Crores in the September quarter and Rs.18.9 Crores in the December quarter. However, investment activity soon picked up in the March quarter when Rs.33.36 Crores of fresh capital was pumped into the ecosystem. 
 
Srivastava explains the phenomenon. “The funding slowdown didn’t affect the angel investment cycle because while big PE firms were affected by the Chinese slump, at the angel level, that’s never an issue. The companies we invest in will mature over the next 3-5 years. The slowdown will have moved by then.” 
 India’s four major angel groups are the Indian Angel Network, <keyword id="1197633" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chennai-Angels">Chennai Angels</keyword>, <keyword id="1786254" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Calcutta-Angels">Calcutta Angels</keyword>, <keyword id="948689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hyderabad-Angels">Hyderabad Angels</keyword> and <keyword id="164924" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Angels">Mumbai Angels</keyword>. 
Srivastava says the focus on cash conservation and unit economics instead of only growth would ensure angels never fund a startup bubble. 
 
“It’s all about the pace at which we fund. Our typical investment is under a million dollar. If somebody wants a $10-20 million valuation, we simply won’t invest. There’s no pressure to deploy”, he observes. 
 
So startups, that’s the bottom-line. Run fast or slow, that’s fine. Just run.

Why India’s angel investment won’t ever see a slowdown

Even though the government has decided to repeal the controversial '<keyword id="6406536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Angel-Tax">angel tax</keyword>', experts believe that a number of start-ups will not be able to benefit from this because of the additions in the new regulation. 
 
'Angel tax' is the tax that the government planned to levy on investments in start-ups; however, since it was considered regressive by many and the fact that it led to many start-ups exiting from the country, it was decided to be amended. 
 
However, start-up experts think that it will still continue to pester start-ups, given that the amendments ask to exempt only those firms that have been classified as start-ups under the new government regulations, which means that only the start-ups stamped from the Inter-ministerial Board of Certification should be exempted from the tax. 
 
For this stamp, start-ups needs to fulfil several criteria like, the company should not be more than five-year old, it should not have turnover exceeding Rs 25 crore, tit should be working towards innovation and commercialisation of new products or services, and it should be driven by technology or intellectual property. 
 
Of course, several start-ups are yet to go for this certification. 
 
Also, the fact that the new regulation will not apply to retrospective investments also leaves many start-ups open to be questioned by tax authorities. 
 "It will definitely have a positive impact but it is not a complete but a partial solution," Saurabh Srivastava, cofounder of <keyword id="328347" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Angel-Network">Indian Angel Network</keyword>, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/policy-trends/investors-see-devil-in-the-details-say-angel-tax-exemption-will-not-benefit-several-startups/articleshow/52825377.cms">ET</a>. "For all angel investments that were made in the last few years ever since the Section 56 came into being, the start-ups and angel investors are today being harassed by income-tax authorities which have opened up their investment records. This is not a good scenario and is upsetting angels," he said. 
 
Srivastava is in talks with the government so that there is a way to certify angel groups, which would mean that investments made through them will be exempted from taxation. "This will be the next logical step and would solve 99 per cent of the problem," he said.

With D-Day approaching fast, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup+industry">startup industry</a> is eagerly speculating how well the Narendra-Modi led government will adopt and accommodate start-up friendly policies and initiatives in the upcoming Budget.

As he inches closer to February 29, here are crucial recommendations of the Indian Angel Network, country's oldest and largest angel investor group, to the “pro-business” government before the Finance Minister finally unveils their startup plan. 
 
“We hope this budget would end one anomaly - treating unfavourably investments by AIFs and Angel Groups in unlisted companies. Currently investors of such companies pay a much higher tax on capital gains while taking a far higher risk as compared to publicly traded shares. We do expect that capital gains tax for AIF funds and angel group investors will be aligned to the current tax regime for investments made in listed shares,” says <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/No-funds-for-your-start-up-Here-are-5-things-you-need-to-attract-angel-investors/articleshow/49323077.cms">Mrs Padmaja Ruparel, President, Indian Angel Network</a>. 
 
Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Why-2015-was-the-year-of-Indian-Startups-tell-us-imminent-investors/articleshow/50355873.cms">Mr Saurabh Srivastava</a>, who is the past chairman of <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword>, and is currently on the executive committee of <keyword id="6355001" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FICCI">FICCI</keyword> and the co-founder of Indian Angel Network, shared with Business Insider detailed recommendations for Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> ahead of the D-Day. 
 He says: “The Startup India announcement was a great start. We are hoping that the budget would introduce the necessary measures to take it forward like <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> Exemption for Start ups, Process of defining and identifying start ups, Establishment of the Credit Guarantee Fund, Waiver of compliances/ Self Certification and Creation of the Rs 10,000 Cr provision for Funds of Funds activity.” 
 
He also said: “We also hope that the government would end one anomaly and that is of treating unfavourably investments by AIFs and Angel Groups in unlisted companies.” 
 
“Today, capital gains tax on investments in publicly listed companies are treated as long term capital gains and taxed at 0% if held for over one year and as short term if held for less than a year and taxed at 15%( plus STT in both cases). But investments in unlisted companies or start ups is taxed at 33% for short term and at 20% for long term capital gains, with the holding period for long term capital gains as 3 years,” explains Mr Srivastava. 
 
“These investments in unlisted companies take more risks, are illiquid and create new ventures. They should be treated more favourably or at least on par with trading shares on the stock exchange. 
This should be allowed at least for investments made by SEBI registered, widely held AIF Category 1 and Angel Funds. The AIFs can collect STT like stock exchanges on such transactions,” he adds. 
 Highlighting the advantages of this, Mr Srivastava says, “this will end the discrimination against domestic <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> funds ( AIFs) as foreign funds anyway pay no capital gains tax by investing from Mauritius and other treaty friendly countries. This will also nudge foreign funds to register with SEBI.”

Exiting a year where startups spread wings across various sectors ranging from e-commerce, hospitality to technology, the next year may see unexplored social impact sectors like healthcare and <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> become the preferred choice for budding entrepreneurs. Moreover, investors feel, much of the groundwork has been laid in 2015 for 2016 to become a watershed year for the emergence of a really strong <keyword id="138263" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup">startup</keyword> ecosystem in India. 
 
“We will have not only fresh entrepreneurs, but new innovation propositions in sectors like healthcare. Fintech startups is going to be very much part of the flavour. I also feel Agritech will start opening up which will bring valuable and high money into sectors that are extremely critical for India’s economy growth and development,” says Padmaja Ruparel, founder of Indian Angel Network. 
 Echoing her opinion, Saurabh Srivastava, co-founder at IAN and Nasscomm, says: “I see a lot of entrepreneurs creating solutions for what you would call the bottom half of the pyramid. In India, such ideas can also be economically very scalable because of the high poverty levels and the underlying opportunity there. Although we see <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">entrepreneurship</keyword> in many sectors, I think we will see lots happening in the social impact arena, medical devices that government has its focus on etc.” 
 Also, as the member of <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> panel on startups and Indian Aspiration Fund, Saurabh tells us the keen interest with which government bodies are working for creating a favorable ecosystem for Indian entrepreneurs. “A big focus area in SEBI committee is on how do we accelerate the flow of capital to startups, how more domestic capital should flow into startups. SEBI, Niti Aayog and several other wings are working on such areas and there is an amazing degree of openness and wish to support,” he says. 
 
Meanwhile, it seems the angel investor community is also expanding in India along with the rise of startup culture. Padmaja says: “Investment is like marriage for angel investors. They invest but what they look for is a divorce and hefty alimony. I think this cycle has started happening at Indian Angel Network (IAN), where people are getting cash exits and returns. I look at this as maturing of the angel ecosystem and I only see this growing in the coming year.” 
 
“Moreover, entrepreneurs today are also looking for fundings. The moment they get it, they will startup. It’s a symbiotic relationship between the two,” she adds.

Panicker, co-founder of Embrace Innovations which makes infant warmers that do not need continuous power, has been acknowledged as a humanitarian for his work in medicine and biotechnology. 
 While Srivastava of Xerox India researcher developed voice and gestural interfaces that could make digital technologies available to the world's poorest people, Paul, a postdoctoral researcher at <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword>, developed 'SmartCane' for the blind that vibrates when it detects obstacles through ultrasonic sensors. 
 
Paul has termed his $50 device for the blind a "people's product" and "a humble tribute to the Mahatma". 
 
Meanwhile, Raman crafted a unique material with "optimum levels of thermal radiation and solar reflection" which, when used to coat a roof that's not insulated, would keep the insides cool. 
 
The post-doctoral researcher at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=stanford">Stanford</a> has received $3 million funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy to develop his technology. 
 
"Over the years, we've had success in choosing young innovators whose work has been profoundly influential on the direction of human affairs," MIT Technology Review editor-in-chief and publisher Jason Pontin was quoted as saying. 
 
Pontin said previous winners include Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the cofounders of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google">Google</a>, Mark Zuckerberg, the cofounder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=facebook">Facebook</a> and Jonathan Ive, the chief designer of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Apple">Apple</a>.

Path-breaking innovations put four Indians in MIT's prestigious innovators list

Looks like Indian government's '<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, <keyword id="3086992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Stand-up-India">Stand Up India</keyword>' programme is getting onto the right track. In a recent development, <keyword id="104385" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Industries-Development-Bank-of-India">Small Industries Development Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6391656" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SIDBI">SIDBI</keyword>) has cleared Rs 930 crore from the Rs 2,000-crore fund-of-funds that was launched in August to support venture capital funds. 
 SIDBI's <keyword id="3007722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Aspiration-Fund">India Aspiration Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="6355075" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IAF">IAF</keyword>) has already screened over 30 venture capital funds since its launch, and sanction letters have been issued to more than half of them. 
 "Proposals from 24 venture capital funds for an aggregate commitment of Rs 930 crore have been cleared in principle by the <keyword id="3181679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="venture-capital-investment-committee">venture capital investment committee</keyword> (<keyword id="2838877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VCIC">VCIC</keyword>) so far, out of which sanction letters have already been issued to 16 VCFs with an aggregate commitment of Rs 482 crore, where documentation is in progress," SIDBI Chairman and MD Kshatrapati Shivaji told ET. 
 
There are a dozen proposals for a potential commitment of around Rs 500 crore that are lined up for the consideration of Venture Capital Investment Committee (VCIC), which comprises of a panel of experts in various fields who are advising SIDBI in screening the venture funds. 
This panel includes TV Mohandas Pai, chairman of Manipal Global Education Services; Sanjeev Bikchandani, founder of Naukri.com owner InfoEdge; Saurabh Srivastava of Indian Angel Network; Kiran Karnik, former Nasscom chief; Vaidyanathan, IIM-Bangalore; and Harkesh Mittal, programme head of innovation, entrepreneurship and technology commercialisation at the Department of Science and Technology. Two senior SIDBI executives are also included in the panel. 
 
After application, the proposals are put up to an executive committee of the bank's board, which then sanctions these applications. SIDBI has already supported Blume Ventures, Orios, YourNest, Ivy Capital and Infuse Ventures through IAF.
