Asked whether EVs in the US have a perception problem, Rawlinson said the problem was "not perception, but reality." "I think many people have driven EVs that frankly suck. I know because I drive all the competition," he said. "I think that the American public has been ill-served by underwhelming EVs," Rawlinson added. Rawlinson, who previously worked for Elon Musk and helped build Lucid, became CEO of Lucid in 2019. Meanwhile, EV sales growth in the US has slowed this year amid a dearth of affordable electric options. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in the US in September was $56,000, compared to $48,397 for combustion-engine vehicles. <h2>China races ahead</h2>US automakers are grappling with the challenge posed by Chinese EV companies like BYD and Xiaomi, who have rolled out affordable electric vehicles packed with advanced technology. While these companies are unable to sell their cars in America due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11">cripplingly high tariffs</a>, they are putting Western companies under pressure in China and attracting plaudits in the US, with Ford CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-ceo-driving-xiaomi-su7-electric-vehicles-ev-2024-10">Jim Farley praising Xiaomi's SU7 EV</a>. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. Global expansion</h2>BYD has embarked on an ambitious expansion drive this year to boost sales outside China. 5 reasons BYD is surging ahead after eclipsing Tesla's quarterly sales for the first time

In a strategy shift that Ford says will initially cost the company nearly $2 billion, the American automaker is replacing the canceled electric SUVs with <keyword id="20810032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hybrid-models" source="keywords">hybrid models</keyword>, its chief financial officer, John Lawler, told reporters on a Wednesday-morning call. After assessing current pricing pressure on EVs, the cost of a battery large enough to power three-row SUVs, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cant-impress-new-ev-buyers-thats-a-problem-2024-7">taking into account consumer demand</a>, Lawler said that Ford wouldn't be able to meet its goal of achieving profitability for the previously planned electric SUVs within the first year of launch. "These vehicles need to be profitable," Lawler said. "If they're not profitable based on where the customer is — where the market is — we will pivot and adjust." Lawler said this new family of hybrid SUVs would include a variety of propulsion options but did not specify whether that would include a plug-in hybrid option or provide details on when these cars would go on sale. <h2>EV growing pains</h2>Ford's revised EV strategy is just the latest in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/automakers-back-to-the-drawing-board-ev-plans-2024-2">a series of shifts</a> from car companies this year as they adjust to a more practical and frugal group of EV shoppers. A slew of high-end EVs have hit dealer lots after years of development. At the same time, the wealthy early adopters these cars were designed for are dropping out of the market. With exports accelerating in the last three months, the company is also confident of sustaining its overseas shipments momentum despite concerns over global geopolitical situation. "We will end up with more than 60 per cent at the end of the year which is what we said at the beginning of the year...We are now almost reaching there," Garg told PTI. He was responding to a query on how much would SUVs contribute to the company's overall sales considering the traction its models have witnessed in the market. He further said,"For us the good thing has been that SUV contribution has moved to 63 per cent in October and year-to-date at 59 per cent as against industry SUV percentage of 48 per cent. So that has really helped us to outperform the industry in terms of January to October numbers." Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) clocked total sales of 68,728 units in October 2023 as compared to 58,006 units in the same month a year ago, a growth of 18.48 per cent. In the January-October period this year, total sales stood at 6,43,535 units as against 5,78,956 units in the year-ago months , a growth of 11.15 per cent. In the <keyword id="6382118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-market" source="Orion">domestic market</keyword>, sales during the period were at 5,09,910 units as compared to 4,65,678 units in the corresponding period last year, up 9.49 per cent. At the beginning of 2023, Garg said the contribution of SUVs to the company's total sales was 53 per cent. Explaining reasons behind the growth of HMIL's SUV sales, he said,"The Creta continues to be an outperformer.With the year-till-date growth of 16 per cent it maintains the segment leadership. "From July, we have been able to increase our <keyword id="6390515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capacity" source="Orion">capacity</keyword> by about 4,000 units a month and that gives us some leeway in terms of managing domestic and exports demand," he said, adding the company has been able to fulfill "backorders" in this quarter for exports. Another factor for increase in exports is that the "Latin American markets have been doing quite well and that has really helped us to put in very healthy export numbers," Garg said. He, however, acknowledged that there are concerns over the global geopolitical developments, specially in Israel and the Middle East. "We are keeping our fingers crossed but as of now the order inflow has been reasonably okay," Garg said, adding the supply flexibility has helped HMIL export more in the last three months.

New Delhi, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Friday said its total automotive wholesales increased by 19 per cent to 70,350 units in August. The company's total dispatches to dealers stood at 59,049 units in August 2022. The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market rose by 25 per cent to 37,270 units last month as against 29,852 units in April last year, the auto major said in a statement. "We clocked our highest-ever SUV domestic sales of 37,270 (units) in a month with a growth of 26 per cent...While demand for our key SUV brands continue to be strong, we are keeping a close watch on the availability of semiconductors and select parts, for sustained and smooth scale up," M&amp;M President, Automotive Division Veejay Nakra said. The company reported a 17 per cent year-on-year decline in exports at 2,423 units in August.

Mahindra sales rise 19% to 70,350 units in August

Japanese car maker <keyword id="20032993" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suzuki" source="keywords">Suzuki</keyword> Motor Corporation on Monday said it will continue to expand SUV portfolio in India to recover its overall market share in the passenger vehicle segment. The company, which currently has around 58 per cent stake in <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-Suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India, said its net sales increased by 732.6 billion yen (15.8 per cent) year-on-year to 5,374.3 billion yen for the last financial year. Operating profit increased by 115 billion yen (32.8 per cent) YoY to 465.6 billion yen. "We will continue to promote the expansion of our SUV models (in India) and aim to recover our total passenger car share," Suzuki Motor Corporation said in a statement. Currently, <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> Suzuki sells SUV (sport utility vehicle) models like Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara in the domestic market. The company's market share has come down to around 42 per cent from over 50 per cent a couple of years back in the domestic passenger vehicle segment on account of limited options in the SUV segment. With the market demand rising for SUVs, the company is in the process of bolstering its presence in the segment and regaining its market share. Suzuki Motor Corp said that in April 2024, a new production line with an annual capacity of 1 lakh units started operations at the Manesar plant. The company said it plans to secure a production capacity of around 40 lakh units in India by FY2030. Suzuki Motor Corp said it expects record sales and profits this fiscal due to higher unit sales. "The company is compiling strategies in various fields, including technology, and will announce the new mid-term management plan by the end of FY2024," it stated.
