JioBharat V3 and V4 4G feature phones launched at ₹1,099

Jio down – Jio services disrupted, users complain on social media

State-run <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> was the only player that added new subscribers and led the market in terms of new net customer addition, according to a monthly subscribers report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday. According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. In a boost to Elon Musk's <keyword id="20034452" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="starlink" source="keywords">Starlink</keyword>, Communications Minister Scindia has said the spectrum for satellite broadband will be allocated and not auctioned as sought by Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal. The satellite broadband spectrum will however be not given free and sector regulator Trai will fix a price for the resource, he told PTI in a text and video interview. "Every country has to follow the <keyword id="20848482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-telecommunications-union" source="keywords">International Telecommunications Union</keyword> (ITU), which is the organisation that lays out the policy for spectrum in space or satellites, and the ITU has been very clear in terms of the spectrum being given out on an assignment basis. In addition, if you look across the world today, I cannot think of a single country that auctions spectrum for satellite," Scindia said. India is a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency for digital technology. Musk's Starlink and global peers like Amazon's Project Kuiper back an administrative allocation. While Ambani's Reliance Jio has been vocal about the need to allocate such spectrum through an auction to provide a level playing field to legacy operators who buy airwaves and set up infrastructure like telecom towers, Mittal last month at an industry event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present articulated the need to use bidding for such allocation. Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel - India's largest and second-largest operators, respectively - feel that giving away the satellite broadband airwaves at a pre-decided price by the government will create an uneven playing field since they had to compete in an auction to get spectrum for their terrestrial wireless phone networks. The two are vying for a piece of the satellite broadband segment as well. Musk-led Starlink is demanding administrative allotment of licences in line with the global trend as it looks to tap into the world's fastest-growing mobile telephony and internet market. Scindia said the Telecom Act of 2023 passed in December has put the matter in 'Schedule 1', which means that the Satcom spectrum will be allocated administratively. Such an allocation will be at a government-decided price, and allow foreign firms like Starlink to offer voice and data services. If the spectrum were to be auctioned, it would have made it costlier for Starlink to roll out services. Starlink has applied for a licence to start operations in the country. Scindia, however, offered no clues on the fate of his application. The minister said that the regulatory process is very clear and transparent. The new Telecom Act has been passed, and the Satellite spectrum is very clearly a part of that in schedule one, he pointed out. "...and therefore, we are open to looking at the application of any entity that wants to invest in India at this point in time. I think only one or two licenses have been given out. And whoever else wants to participate, India is surely going to welcome that," the minister said. Last month, Musk, in a post on X, termed the demand made by Jio for shunning sector regulator Trai's consultation paper on satellite broadband being allocated and not auctioned as "unprecedented", and when Mittal made the pitch in the presence of the Prime Minister, he asked if it was "too much trouble" to allow Starlink to provide internet services in India. This was perhaps the first time that Musk, whose networth of USD 241 billion is more than the combined wealth of Ambani, Mittal and Gautam Adani, had spoken directly against demands for a level playing field made by the Indian firms. In a win for Elon Musk, Scindia says no to spectrum auction pitch from Ambani, Mittal

According to the report, iPhone shipments grew about 39 per cent to 9.2 million units last year. "In CY23, India represented 4 per cent of iPhones shipments and revenue, up from 3 per cent in CY22 and 1 per cent 5 years ago," said analysts in the report. "If India continues to grow at the same trajectory while China iPhone shipments stay flat, India would be a bigger iPhone market than China by 2027," it added. TechCrunch was first to report on Apple India's 2023 revenue. Apple registered strong double-digit growth in the December quarter in India, reaching another quarter revenue record in the country, company's CEO <keyword id="19954680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tim-cook" source="keywords">Tim Cook</keyword> said earlier this month. Responding to an analyst's questions, <keyword id="19905938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cook" source="keywords">Cook</keyword> said that the India market "hit a quarter revenue record". India's smartphone shipments remained flat in 2023 at 152 million units, but Apple reached the 10-million-unit mark in shipments and captured the top position in revenue in a calendar year for the first time. In a bid to further boost mobile manufacturing in the country, the government in January slashed import duty on parts used for manufacturing of mobile phones to 10 per cent from 15 per cent. The move will help companies like Apple to manufacture more of its high-end premium smartphones in the country. Apple's India revenue up 42% to $8.7 bn in 2023: Morgan Stanley

When asked on X if he is planning an email service, the billionaire said the service is coming soon. <keyword id="20700389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nate-mcgrady" source="keywords">Nate McGrady</keyword>, a member of X's Engineering and Security team, had asked when XMail would be launched. "Coming," replied Musk, setting the tech industry on fire as Google faced rumoured plans to sunset Gmail via a manipulated image that began circulating on social media platforms. A follower replied: "Lost trust in Gmail. Time to make the switch to Xmail asap!" Another commented that "I will use my Gmail as how I use my Hotmail now, for junks". Earlier in the day, an image floated around on X that appears to show an email from Google about it "sunsetting" Gmail in August 2024. The email turned out to be fake and "Gmail is here to stay," said Google. The company is shutting down the basic HTML view this year and the users will be switched to the service's "Standard" view. Elon Musk says Gmail's alternative Xmail is coming soon

<keyword id="19997865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kia" source="keywords">Kia</keyword> India on Friday said it is voluntarily recalling 4,358 units of a petrol variant of its mid-sized sports utility vehicle <keyword id="20037256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="seltos" source="keywords">Seltos</keyword> to replace the electronic oil pump controller. The company is recalling Smartstream G1.5 Petrol Seltos with IVT transmission, manufactured between February 28 and July 13, 2023, the South Korean automaker said in a statement. The recall has been prompted by a potential error in the electronic oil pump controller, which may impact the performance of the electronic oil pump in the specified transmission variant, it added. The company said it has informed the Ministry of Road Transport &amp; Highways (MoRTH) about the voluntary recall initiative. Since the safety of car owners is a top priority, the company is proactively replacing the electronic oil pump controller in the affected units for a seamless ownership experience, the statement said. The automaker will directly reach out to the owners of the vehicles concerned to update them about the voluntary recall. Kia sells models, including Seltos, Sonet and Carens, in the Indian market. New Delhi, Jio on Monday launched internet-enabled Jio Bharat phones at Rs 999, packing-in cheaper monthly plan of Rs 123 for unlimited voice calls and 14 GB data. The new offering aims to accelerate the '2G Mukt Bharat' vision, as India still has 250 million mobile subscribers trapped in the 2G era with feature phones. While India is leading the 5G revolution on one side with the transformational Jio True 5G network, there is a section of society that is unable to reap the benefits of digital technology in entirety. "Jio Bharat is being launched with the objective of empowering every Indian with the power of digital services, especially those who cannot afford a smartphone. This will truly mark the beginning of digital freedom for the 250 million feature phone users in India and will bridge the digital divide," Jio said in a statement. Beta trial for first 1 million Jio Bharat phones starts from July 7, 2023. Besides Reliance Retail, other phone brands (starting with Karbonn) will adopt the 'Jio Bharat platform' to build 'Jio Bharat phones'. Jio Bharat is priced at Rs 999, "the lowest entry price for an internet-enabled phone", it said. It is offering 30 per cent cheaper monthly plan and 7 times more data compared to feature phone offerings of other operators. "Rs 123 per month for unlimited voice calls and 14 GB data, compared to other operators' Rs 179 plan for voice calls and 2GB data," the statement added. Lately, the digital disempowerment and disparity for feature phone users has become worse, with other telecom operators increasing the minimum price to stay connected, the statement said, adding even basic voice services for a 30-day period, which used to cost Rs 99 previously, now costs Rs 199. Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio, said there are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who remain "trapped" in the 2G era, unable to tap into basic features of the internet at a time when the world stands at the cusp of a 5G revolution. "Six years ago, when Jio was launched, we made it clear that Jio will leave no stone unturned to democratise internet and pass the benefits of technology to every Indian," he said. Technology will no longer remain a privilege for a select few, he said, highlighting that the new Jio Bharat phone is another step to ensure every single person reaps the benefits of digital society. "It is at the centre of innovation, and it continues to demonstrate our focus on bringing disproportionate and true value for different segments of users with meaningful, real-life use cases," he said.

<ul><li>In the last one year, Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword>’s dealer commissions bill went up by a massive 87%, as per a Jeffries report. </li><li>The commissions can only grow in the coming years as <keyword id="4056036" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jio-fiber" source="Orion">Jio Fiber</keyword> plans to increase its customer base from six million to 20 million. </li><li>Even as its network costs also increased, in terms of tower rentals and repair costs, Jio’s costs are much lower than that of its peers. </li></ul>Seven years after launching its services and three years after it launched its premium Jio Fibre services, Reliance Jio has opened its purse strings to its dealers and sales channels. In the last one year, according to a Jeffries report, its dealer commissions bill went up by a massive 87%, and this momentum is likely to continue for the next year too. “This was possibly due to continued scale-up of home-broadband and rise in commission intensity. Jio's dealer commissions at 3.4% of sales are now in line with that of peers,” the report said. However, its biggest dealer is Reliance Retail with over 12,000 stores across India. The commissions that the retailer earned is to the tune of ₹2,580 crore in FY22. Its overall sales and distribution expenses declined 6% despite a 34% rise in gross subscriber additions during FY22, annually. But these commissions increase will not change the carefully curated economics of Jio’s operations even as its capex is all set to increase and free-cash flows are affected, after it bought fresh 5G spectrum. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Tower costs, rentals lower" comment="subhead" text="Tower costs, rentals lower">Tower costs, rentals lower</cmsannotation> The network costs of Jio too went up by 13% year on year, driven by fiber usage charges and power and fuel costs. Its revenues grew at a sharper pace than these costs. “Given the rising gap in the revenues booked by the fiber company and costs recognised by Reliance Jio Infocomm, these costs are likely to grow at a rapid pace in FY23 as well,” Jeffries said. In terms of most other costs, Jio runs a tight operation as compared to its peers. According to a Jefferies report, Reliance Jio’s average rent cost per tower is 30-40% lower than its rivals. Even repairs and maintenance costs of these towers is half of what Airtel and Vodafone Idea pay, and the report says this is because of the newer network technologies used by Jio. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="93516727" title="Jio vs Airtel: Which one will offer faster and more reliable 5G services?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In the year under review, the fuel costs of Jio’s sites rose by 14%. “This is largely in line with that for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Repair and maintenance costs grew 57% year on year. Even after this rise, Jio's repair and maintenance costs per site remained 50% lower than peers, mainly due to a much newer network,” the report said. This is one part of the economics of Jio’s strategy that allows it to remain the most competitive player in the market, in spite of its recent 5G spectrum purchase bill that was twice what Airtel paid for. Experts also believe that Jio may benefit from a ban in India. “Sub ₹12,000 category will see very careful participation from Chinese players unless there is clarity.
