"The broader market witnessed volatility, underscoring caution on account of Q4 earnings and general election uncertainties, which led investors to stay on the sidelines. We expect the trend to continue in the short term as the market slid below the physiological level of 22,000. The global indices are trading with mixed cues ahead of the BOE policy meeting later today and US inflation figures due next week," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said. Meanwhile, the country's largest lender SBI reported 18.18 per cent growth in the March quarter consolidated net profit to Rs 21,384.15 crore against Rs 18,093.84 crore in the year-ago period. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) on Thursday posted a 25 per cent fall in its March quarter net profit on lower refining margins and announced one free bonus share for every two shares held. In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge declined 2.41 per cent and midcap index dropped 2.01 per cent. Among the indices, oil and gas lost 3.41 per cent, capital goods dropped 3.37 per cent, metal tanked 3.13 per cent, industrials (2.92 per cent), utilities (2.59 per cent) and commodities (2.39 per cent). On the other hand, auto emerged as the major gainer. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 6,669.10 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. "Nifty ended sharply lower led by institutional selling and traders squaring up due to nervousness on election progress. World shares were mostly lower on Thursday ahead of the Bank of England's policy decision and after the US market's pause stretched into a second day and as Chinese stocks rose after China reported better-than-expected trade figures for April," said Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research, HDFC Securities. In Asian markets, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled with gains, while Seoul and Tokyo ended lower. European markets were trading on a mixed note. Wall Street closed mixed in overnight trade on Wednesday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.48 per cent to USD 83.89 a barrel. "The market is continuously witnessing pressure ahead of the election outcome. We don't have any global reason for this correction, while some uncertainty ahead of the big event is causing profit-booking in the market. Our market has been largely driven by domestic investors, including both HNIs and institutional investors, for the last few months. "Now, they are sitting on the sidelines for the last couple of days and taking some profit off the table ahead of the big event, while FIIs are continuously selling in our market, which is pushing the market lower. The Volatility index, India VIX, has risen 70 per cent from its lows, which is also creating some uncertainty among traders and investors," Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd, said. It, however, gave an 'Underperform' rating for IDP Education, with a potential 16 % downside in its stock price. BofA Securities said they presented a list of 10 quarterly stock recommendations among Asia Pacific companies, based on the view that these stocks could have the most significant market and business-related catalysts in the quarter ahead. "Given the breadth and scope of our overall coverage of stocks and sectors in Asia Pac, we recognize this recommended list cannot include nor is it designed to include all major catalysts. Our objective is to identify what we believe will be the highest impact ideas in each quarter when we publish the list," the financial services company said. For Reliance, the financial services company has a 'Buy' rating as Jio has emerged as the top telecom player in a growing market in India. "Reliance's telecom subsidiary -Jio - has garnered a large number of paying subscribers. Service quality perceptions continue to improve. Data demand appears to be sticky, and relatively less price sensitive," it said. "Reliance is also completing a major petrochemicals expansion, which should significantly increase its free cash flow potential. Continued improvements at Jio and FCF (free cash flow) generation should drive upside." Explaining the rationale behind the recommendation, it said it maintained 'Buy' on Reliance Industries after finding find risk-reward favorable as it heads into its Annual General Meeting (likely in August). With Jio making investments in 5G, BofA Securities sees further room for the company to gain market share -- mainly at the expense of Vodafone Idea. "Furthermore, any better-than-expected revenues in fiber broadband or digital initiatives could surprise positively." The Indian conglomerate foraying into "high-margin" niches like chocolates, cosmetics, and beverages by making acquisitions is also a positive, BofA Securities said. Further, it said Reliance's oil-to-chemical business is well positioned to generate $9-9.5 billion EBITDA for the next three years, thus providing cash-flow stability. Half of the issue size has been reserved for qualified institutional investors (QIBs), 35 per cent for retail investors and the remaining 15 per cent for non-institutional investors. Further, investors can bid for a minimum of 58 shares and in multiples of 58 shares thereafter. SBI Capital Markets and DAM Capital Advisors are the book running lead managers to the issue. The announcement came on Monday as Jio revealed its quarterly results, showcasing staggering numbers and milestones achieved in various segments. As of March 2024, Jio boasts a subscriber base of 481.8 million, out of which 108 million subscribers are on Jio's True5G Standalone network. The number reflects Jio's stronghold in the Indian telecom market. According to a press release, the total traffic on the Jio network has reached 40.9 Exabytes, marking a 35.2 per cent year-on-year increase. This surge is attributed to the growing adoption of 5G and Home services. Notably, 28 per cent of the traffic comes from 5G subscribers, indicating a swift transition towards next-generation connectivity. Additionally, Jio's Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have contributed significantly to the data traffic. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic 2.4x increase in annual data traffic, with per capita monthly data usage skyrocketing to 28.7 GB from just 13.3 GB three years ago. This surge underscores the growing reliance on digital connectivity in India. Commenting on the results, <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his satisfaction with the company's performance and its contribution to the Indian economy. He highlighted the significant achievements, including becoming the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits. Ambani said, "Initiatives across RIL's businesses have made a remarkable contribution towards fostering growth of various sectors of the Indian economy. It is heartening to note that alongside strengthening the national economy, all segments have posted a robust financial and operating performance. This has helped the Company achieve multiple milestones. I am happy to share that this year, Reliance became the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits." The company's retail arm, Reliance Retail, also showed robust growth, with a 36 per cent increase in footfalls and strong digital commerce platforms offering a broad brand catalogue. "Reliance Retail continued to provide customers endless choices through its robust omni-channel presence. We continue to offer product differentiation and superior offline experience through stores remodelling and revamping of layouts. Our digital commerce platforms also provide newer solutions to users with a broad brand catalogue. Reliance Retail also works towards strengthening millions of merchants through its unique initiatives in new commerce space", said Ambani. In addition to its telecom and retail segments, Reliance Industries Limited has shown resilience in its Oil to Chemicals (O2C) segment, despite challenging market conditions. The KG-D6 block has achieved significant production milestones, accounting for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production. Ambani emphasised, "Strong demand for fuels globally, and limited flexibility in refining system worldwide, supported margins and profitability of the O2C segment. Downstream chemical industry experienced increasingly challenging market conditions through the year." He added, "Despite headwinds, maintaining leading product positions and feedstock flexibility through our operating model that prioritises cost management, we delivered a resilient performance. The KG-D6 block has achieved 30 MMSCMD of production and now accounts for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production." In terms of financial performance, Reliance Jio has achieved several remarkable milestones. The consolidated EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) at Rs 178,677 crore, while the consolidated Profit Before Tax (PBT) has surpassed Rs 100,000 crore. The company's market capitalization has crossed Rs 20,00,000 crore, further solidifying its position as one of India's most valuable companies. Reliance Jio emerges as World's largest mobile operator in data traffic, surpassing China mobile

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Arizona opened the doors for outside investors in law firms, and Steve German had high hopes.</li><li>But he says his co-owner, 777 Partners, was hit by scandal and didn't invest the millions it promised.</li></ul>Two years ago, Steve German was optimistic.He'd done well for himself as a trial lawyer in Phoenix, suing insurance companies on behalf of workers who were denied benefits. And he'd just launched a venture with the Miami investment firm 777 Partners that he hoped would revolutionize the legal business.Arizona had recently begun permitting nonlawyers to invest in law firms, which is banned in nearly every other state. German seemed poised to ride the wave of deregulation and build what he'd later describe as "generational wealth."State bar associations have long restricted lawyers from selling stakes in their firms to outside investors, out of a desire to protect consumers from bad advice, to keep financiers from distorting firms' ethical obligations to their clients — and to keep profits in the hands of lawyers. That meant that firms basically had to eat what they killed: Any investments in marketing, technology, or building cases had to come from client fees or the firm's cut of jury awards and settlements.Allowing private-equity riches to pour into law firms looked like it could be a game changer. When he spoke with Business Insider <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-benefit-from-arizona-law-firm-ownership-structure-2022-10">in 2022</a>, German excitedly described how he might use 777's money to take lower fees and allow clients to designate charities they'd like to benefit. He was making connections with referral sources and said he'd hired BerlinRosen, one of the better-known public-relations firms that work with plaintiffs' lawyers."It was something that was revolutionary in many ways, and it was something I saw as a way to do good," German said. The firm, called Scout Law Group, was one of the first such firms — known as an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-benefit-from-arizona-law-firm-ownership-structure-2022-10">alternative business structure</a> — to be approved by state regulators."The ABS program reminds me of when Uber first came to town and everyone was like, 'Oh, my god, that's crazy,'" Andy Kvesic, who serves on the state committee that approves ABS applications, said.German's optimism was short-lived. Before 2022 came to an end, his relationship with 777 had begun to sour amid disputes over funding. Now, German has become a vocal critic of Arizona's hands-off approach to regulating these new entities.German said 777 didn't supply money on the terms or timeline it promised and planned. While he got some funding and was able to build a portfolio of about 300 to 400 cases, German said the millions that his partner had promised never flowed in. He had to whip out his own checkbook to pay vendors and employees, he said in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24752517-german-v-scout-law-group-and-777-partners-et-al">lawsuit filed in April</a> alleging fraud, breach of contract, and unpaid wages. It's one of several lawsuits involving 777, which, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/30/2023/feds-probe-sports-investor-777-over-money-flows">Semafor,</a> has also been under Justice Department scrutiny.777 has not yet filed an answer to German's complaint. The firm did not respond to a request for comment.He first decided to resign from Scout last summer, a few months after the firm and its leaders filed licensing paperwork with state regulators that he said he now believed was incomplete. But he told BI that after he forwarded his "break-up letter" to state regulators, he came to regret the decision; it touched off a bar investigation and resulted, for a period, in the suspension of Scout's license. He ended up rescinding the resignation and sticking around until 777 picked a new compliance lawyer in December, he said.After all that, he expected that the firm and its new leaders' license application would be closely scrutinized. He said the steady drumbeat of negative reporting made it clear that 777 hadn't been up front about the controversies it was involved in.But, he said, the committee that reviews ABS applications renewed Scout's license with barely any discussion. German also sits on the committee, and he was recused from the decision. But he said that and subsequent board decisions, like giving a pass to a lawyer who failed to mention that he'd been suspended in another state, unsettled him."What we're doing is sending the wrong message," he said. "What we're saying is, don't disclose your bad stuff."<h2 id="36d168a2-3b57-4875-b8ab-b0c81b9db7d8">Regulators approved 777 Partners despite litigation, DOJ probe</h2>German isn't the first business partner to sue 777 Partners, and he may not be the last. After the firm began investing in soccer clubs, Brazil's news outlet O Globo reported that one of its owners, Josh Wander, was on probation until 2018 for a cocaine-related charge. (At the time, 777 called it "ancient history.") The firm's reliance on insurance premiums, which are normally invested conservatively to ensure future claims can be paid, to fund its risky bets in sports teams and other speculative investments was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/15/2023/mystery-investor-777-partners-bought-european-sports-teams-with-insurance-customers-cash">unearthed</a> by Semafor, and insurance regulators and business partners have been asking questions and filing lawsuits.But German said on some level, it's about more than money. Revelations about 777's other business lines — for instance, its work with online payday lenders that charge sky-high interest rates and pay Native American tribes to use their sovereign immunity as a legal shield — repulsed him when he learned about them in July after reading about the firm in the soccer publication Josimar, he said.Asked how he didn't know about the controversies until 2023, German said he'd asked Steven Pasko, one of 777's principals, whether the firm was the subject of any lawsuits while he was filling out ABS licensing paperwork, and he had denied it. He said he still didn't know how the controversies didn't come to the attention of ABS committee staff."These people are the exact opposite of who should be approved," he said. "We're supposed to be looking out for the public interest, and we're letting in guys who are sued for RICO?"The ABS committee's minutes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcourts.gov/Portals/26/ABS%20Regular%20Minutes.pdf">show</a> that Scout's renewal application passed 5-1, with two recusals and two absences. According to the committee's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcourts.gov/Portals/26/ABS%20Committee%20Annual%20Report%20to%20Supreme%20Court%20for%202023%20-%20FINAL.pdf">most recent annual report</a>, 25 new entities got a green light last year; one application was denied. The number of complaints jumped from zero in 2022 to 24 in 2023, though no discipline was imposed on any of the four entities that were the subject of complaints.Lynda Shely, an Arizona legal-ethics lawyer who is also a member of the committee, said she would not comment specifically on German's dispute with 777 and Scout, which she has advised. She was also recused from the vote on Scout's renewal application. But she pushed back on the idea that Arizona was being too permissive, saying many applications didn't even make it to a vote because of the heavy scrutiny applied by committee staff. Funding and marketing firms were cutting deals with law firms in nonpublic arrangements for years before Arizona changed its rules, she added."There's a whole lot of disclosure that occurs through our model," she said. "There's more transparency about the relationship with an ABS."As BI reported in 2022, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-benefit-from-arizona-law-firm-ownership-structure-2022-10">Arizona's ABS structure</a> has unleashed a wave of experimentation. In some entities, lawyers and accountants are working side by side to serve clients better, and in others, technologists are helping traditional law firms work more efficiently, with the potential to share in the upside. Advocates see it as a way for lawyers to sell packages of valuable services, instead of selling billable hours.But one of the most common uses of an ABS has been for personal-injury and mass-tort attorneys to team up with funders and marketers more directly than is possible under legal-ethics rules in other states.Defenders of traditional law-firm structures say lawyers take an oath to do what's best for their clients. They argue that involving outside funders in firm management creates a risk that profits come first and clients come second.But some advocates for systems like Arizona's say those risks can be managed by requiring lawyers to have the final say, keeping a close eye on the new firms, and taking complaints seriously. They say there's nothing wrong with lawyers using outside money to reach more injured clients, who may not know where to turn when facing medical bills from car wrecks and dangerous drugs."So far, it is a success," Shely said. As with any new initiative, she said, it "will have growing pains and need to adjust and tweak things as we go."For much of 2023, German said, he expressed his discontent with 777's leadership, including its then-general counsel, Ed Gehres, and its chief financial officer, Damien Alfalla. He said he had conversations with other investors about buying 777's stake in Scout, but the talks ultimately went nowhere. He said other investors wanted to borrow money against Scout's unearned contingency fees, which could have made it impossible for those clients to find a new lawyer if they had to leave Scout for some reason.Gehres and Alfalla didn't respond to emails seeking comment.In the wake of his own dispute with 777, he said, he has become alarmed by the permissive approach the state has taken toward licensing and thinks more scrutiny is needed. He still believes that the ABS model has the potential to fill gaps in the legal marketplace, he said, but that greenlighting any applicant — many of which have little connection to Arizona — is a mistake.Allowing outside investment into law firms, he said, "is a privilege." "It serves a purpose for access to justice," he added. The aim is to ensure that data gets from point A to point B in the most reliable way at the lowest possible cost once it launched on 1 January, 2020. Ambani cited the example of India’s 300 million electricity meters that needs to be connected digitally for real-time monitoring. “Having up to date data by the minute can help consumers have full visibility and control over the cost and quality,” according to Ambani during the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/highlights-of-mukesh-ambani-speech-at-reliance-industries-agm/articleshow/70638299.cms">Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting.</a> Just as Jio will be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-fired-up-as-mukesh-ambani-joins-hands-with-satya-nadellas-microsoft-to-challenge-jeff-bezos-in-india/articleshow/70641754.cms">threatening Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Web Services (AWS)</a> as it partners with Microsoft to bring cloud computing to small and medium businesses, it will also challenging Amazon when it comes to IoT. It’s not about your light bulb at home IoT is not all about smart bulbs or air conditioners. In reality, a lot of the communication that happens over IoT is between machines. In fact, 50% of IoT spending will be driven by enterprise capabilities like manufacturing, transportation, logistics and utilities rather than consumer facing applications, according to <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/in/Documents/manufacturing/in-mfg-harnessing-the-power-noexp.pdf">Deloitte</a>. The reason these sectors will primarily push growth is because of their direct association with smart city projects and the Indian governments $1 billion investment to set up a 100 smart cities in the country, according to the World Bank. In a smart city, typical IoT applications would help manage energy usage, monitor traffic, deliver better public services and even lower the level of pollution. From the current 60 million IoT devices currently functioning in the country, Deloitte estimates that 32 times more devices — 1.9 billion — will be online by 2020. As a result, the market will also expand from $1.3 billion to $9 billion. According to an IDC report, half of the businesses in India see IoT as a requirement for staying digitally fit and 60% believe it's essential to keeping a competitive advantage. While the potential of IoT is huge — it’s not without its challenges. The transfer of data over connected devices brings with concerns of reliability and privacy. To help with this, the Open Connectivity Foundation recently opening a local chapter in India to help create awareness about global IoT standards. Even so, it’s important for India to have its own regulations in place so that liability and responsibility can be assessed accordingly in the event of a data breach or cyber attack. Here are the top ten takeaways from a historic speech that laid out the path for the transformation of one of India's biggest and fairly old conglomerate: 1. A $15 billion cash-out Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil producer, Aramco, will buy 20% stake in the Indian behemoth's oil-to-chemicals business, valuing the unit at $75 billion. This would make the investment from Aramco in RIL at about $15 billion. This partnership will be across refining and petrochemical assets. The Saudi government owned oil major will also supply 500 barrels of day crude oil to RIL’s Jamnagar refinery. “This signifies perfect synergy and world’ largest integrated refinery and petchem complex,” Ambani said. 2. More money, less debt Reliance Industries has a huge debt of about $21 billion. This has been a huge concern for investors lately which led to a fall in the stock price in the last few months. However, Ambani declared that the net debt will be zero by March 2021. The company has cash and cash equivalents of about $19.5 billion and another $15 billion from Aramco will help the company retire its massive debt. The threat to Jeff Bezos Microsoft's tie-up with Jio will, probably, be the biggest challenge for Jeff Bezos in one of the world's biggest markets, India. Reliance will offer end-to-end digital stack to "enable and empower" small merchants currently at the mercy of other online retail platforms like Amazon and Flipkart (now owned by Walmart). This stack will include a point-of-sale payment device, which could be a $900 billion market, according to Jal Irani, analyst at Edelweiss Financial Services. 6. Once an oil giant, now immersed in technology Ambani's plan for digital transformation is that of convergence with the physical world. Reliance Industries plans to take long strides in spaces like 'Internet of Things' (IoT), cloud computing and a broadband ecosystem. So far, Jio had only one revenue stream, and now there will be four more streams of revenue that will kick in from the current financial year itself. "Within another 2 years, there will be over 2 billion connected devices in India, and Jio aims to have half of those on its IoT platform.  9. From content creator to content aggregator Jio seems to have changed focus from creating fresh content for its platform to building alliances with other OTT platforms. Ambani also revealed that Jio will be able to offer traditional TV channels to its customers. Earlier this year, RIL acquired controlling stakes in Hathway, Den and GTPL. Together, they give RIL access to 30,000 local cable operators. "We have designed a Jio set top box that will broadcast TV channels, for which the local cable operators will get a steady revenue. This set top box will be sold to all Jio Fibre customers," the RIL chairman said. Premium subscribers of Jio Fibre will also be able to watch newly-released movies at the comfort of their home on the day of their release in the theaters. This will be a huge setback for companies like Inox and PVR as Jio's offering may affect footfalls at multiplexes and box office collections too. 10. More bad news for Vodafone Idea and Airtel Jio's mobile phone services has about 340 million subscribers as of now. Ambani is targeting to take this number to over 500 million over the next few months. That would mean Jio will remain an aggressive player in the market and that's bad news for other players like Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Given that RIL is getting additional cash from Aramco and BP, and if it becomes a zero net debt company by March 2021, the company of its size and scale will only have more money to muscle out other players with its aggressive pricing. Other telcos are already in deep trouble after having fought Jio in the market for nearly three years with higher discounts, funded by higher debt.
