The <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> has decided to be strict against the depiction of a wrong map of India, which includes showing Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (<keyword id="44062" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PoK">PoK</keyword>) or <keyword id="6367693" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunachal">Arunachal</keyword> Pradesh as disputed lands or not as parts of India. Such maps, on any online platform or physical documents, would invite a stiff jail term of seven years along with a heavy fine of up to Rs One Crore. 
 
To add to this, the Geospatial Information Regulation Bill would soon be brought to tables, and any person or institution acquiring and disseminating any geospatial imagery or data of any part of India through space or aerial platforms will be required to first seek permission and license from a government authority. 
 
For online platforms like Google, this could mean an extra effort of applying for a license so that they could run Google Maps or Google Earth in India. These imageries would be screened for "sensitivity checks" so that India's security and sovereignty can be protected. 
 
However, the act will not be applicable on Indian government bodies.

Showing PoK and Arunachal as disputed territories will land you in jail for 7 years

His actions were registered as a sign of protest over the presence of Pakistan’s minister for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Muhammad Saeed, at the event. PoK has been a hot-button issue between India and Pakistan due to its strategic importance to both nations. And never before, at least during a SAARC summit, has the PoK minister been invited to attend the negotiations since its underlying mission is to achieve regional cooperation and the PoK issue is in direct contradiction of that directive. Singh reportedly left the meeting as soon as Saeed was invited to speak at the dais during the event’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry meeting. The doom of SAARC? Prior to this, the most recent incident where Pakistan reportedly tried to ‘legitimise’ PoK in the eyes of the international community was when Pakistan’s new Prime Minister, Imran Khan, was sworn in. India maintains that Kashmir is an integral part of the country and doesn’t recognise the authority of a ‘minister’ for the people in PoK. This SAARC meeting was the first to be initiated in a long time. In 2016, India pulled out of the 19th SAARC summit that was also supposed to hosted by Islamabad in retaliation of the terrorist attack in Uri on an Indian Army base. After India pulled out, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also pulled out <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/world/neighbours/story/uri-terror-attack-now-bangladesh-slams-pakistan-terms-india-friend-since-1971-342238-2016-09-21">stating</a> that, “We are against terror, against terrorist country and against any country that supports terror.” There have been no subsequent SAARC summits since then. Pakistan has been accused of repeatedly trying to derail international negotiations by bringing up the issue of PoK during international summits, especially those presided over by the United Nations. India’s stance has been that while it too agrees with the gravitas of the situation, its repeated resurgence on international platforms undercuts a lot of other important policy decisions that have be addressed.

Indian diplomat walks out during SAARC summit, takes offence to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir minister’s presence

In his Independence Day speech, PM Narendra Modi pitched for the rights of those living in areas like Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan regions of Pakistan. And now, the government has proposed a Rs 2,000-crore package for people displaced from PoK who are living in India. 
 
The home ministry will soon be sending the proposal before the Cabinet for approval. 
 
The J&amp;K government is said to have identified 36,348 such families, to be given around Rs 5.5 lakh each. These include refugees from Pakistan, mostly from PoK, who got settled in different parts of Jammu, Kathua and Rajouri districts, after 1947, 1965 and 1971 wars, and don’t have permanent Indian residency. Even though they can cast their votes in Lok Sabha polls, they are not eligible to do so in the elections to the Jammu &amp; Kashmir assembly. 
 
However, Jammu and Kashmir Sharanarthi Action Committee (JKSAC), an organisation representing the displaced people of PoK, has said that this package should not be seen as the final settlement for their requirement, which is estimated to be as Rs 9,200 crore.

Govt proposes Rs 2000 crore package for PoK refugees

India has turned down the invitation to be a part of China and Pakistan’s One Belt One Road project. To this, China has reacted by saying that India would have a very “small role” in the project if it decides to join the initiative in the future. Here’s why India would never support China’s OBOR project with Pakistan

<ul><li>India’s apex space agency announced on January 17 that it will be launching a border surveillance satellite.</li><li>The announcement comes six months after China and Pakistan launched the a satellite that will be able to monitor the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The CPEC runs through disputed land that both, India and Pakistan, claim belongs to them. </li><li>India’s satellite will be able to send high-resolution imagery from its borders to help the border guarding forces communicate more efficiently.</li></ul>India’s discomfort of the friendship brewing between Pakistan and China was evident as it announced plans to launch border surveillance satellites. The <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword>’s (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) announcement to launch a satellite that will pick up high-resolution imagery of its neighboring borders comes just six months after Pakistan launched its own remote sensing satellite. The Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1), which was bought from China, will be able to monitor the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — a part of which runs through Gilgit-Baltistan in Azad Kashmir or Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK). And, PoK is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-expresses-strong-opposition-to-china-pakistan-economic-corridor-says-challenges-indian-sovereignty/articleshow/57664537.cms">disputed</a> land. India claims that its been under Pakistan’s illegitimate control since 1947. While the <keyword id="397800" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-satellite">Indian satellite</keyword> will be launched ‘exclusively’ for country’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), meaning only the ministry will have access to its data. However, its implementation will be a coordinated effort between ISRO and India’s Ministry of Defence. The border security satellites aren’t only to fend against Pakistan, but China as well, with Aksai Chin — disputed territory between India and China — also lying along the country’s northern border. The images from the satellite will help the Border Guarding Forces (BGF) communicate more efficiently and give them a clearer picture of on-ground activity through high-resolution imagery. The task force report on ‘Space Technology in Border Management’ was approved by the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, on January 17. It highlights the short-term, mid-term and long-term plans for how India’s satellite technology will be implemented. ‘Space Technology in Border Management’ In the short run, the aim is to help the Border Guarding Forces (BGF). But, as things progress, the aim is to use the images to help the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) as well. Essentially, the government wants to create a ‘Central Archival Facility’ that will allow the Home Ministry to share images resources will other agencies as well. It will also link into the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) to provide navigation facilities. Once all of this is set up in the long run, it’s not only the difficult border areas that will be monitored but Naxal areas as well — also known as India’s ‘Red Corridor’ where there is an ongoing conflict between Maoist groups and the Indian government. In terms of space technology, India is bounds ahead of Pakistan having launched 104 satellites. But China has reportedly launched 250 satellites and most recently, successfully landed on the far-side of the moon.

India responds to China-Pakistan satellite launch with its own border surveillance satellites

What might seem a bit uncomfortable for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi before he visits China next month is Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Pakistan visit yesterday. According to a news report in The Economic Times, Xi is to announce $46 billion worth of infrastructure projects and plans to sell submarines. 
 
Pakistan being China's oldest and closest ally in South Asia, the partnership between these two is often interpreted as a caution to India. The ET report says, Xi, who was to visit Pakistan last year had postponed it due to security concerns, is visiting Islamabad at a time when the Modi government is trying to expand India's influence in the India Ocean Region and Asia Pacific. Since coming to power last May, the PM has visited several countries in these regions. 
 
Xi, who will be awarded Pakistan's highest civilian award, 'Nishan-e-Pakistan', has said the trip was like a visit the home of his "own brother". 
 
Diplomatic sources from Pakistan said the highlight of the visit would be the signing of an agreement to build an economic corridor worth $46 billion with Chinese assistance. The 3,000-km-long China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will link China's backward far-western region to Pakistan's Gwadar deep-sea port on the Arabian Sea via Pakistan occupied Kashmir through a massive and complex network of roads, railways, business zones, energy schemes and pipelines. 
 
The route from Gwadar to Kashgar in China's Xinjiang is also a shortcut for goods from Europe to China and would help Beijing avoid the Strait of Malacca. 
 
Pakistan is scheduled to also sign a deal to buy eight Chinese submarines for $6 billion dollars. This would double Pakistan's submarine fleet and also help counter India's increasing strategic footprints in the Indian Ocean Region that has contributed to discomfiture of Beijing amid its own ambitions in the area, the ET report reads. 
 
These deals would help China offset its setback in Sri Lanka, where its massive Colombo Port project has been suspended and other infrastructure projects financed by it have been under scanner since Maithripala Sirisena ousted Mahinda Rajapaksa in the January presidential elections. The Gwadar port, which has so far remained ineffective due to insurgency in Balochistan, could emerge as the key link in China's Silk Road Economic Belt strategy in the region with no early signs of Colombo getting back to Chinese fold, claimed officials. 
 
Chinese foreign ministry officials said on Friday that the projects would be the first initiatives under Beijing's Silk Road Economic Belt and Maritime Silk Road plans. Through this strategy, China is seeking to build an economic belt, covering countries along both the sea path and land path. 
 
The financial daily reports, India would raise objections if China creates infrastructure in PoK as part of the corridor, said officials in Delhi. India had previously too opposed China-financed infrastructure projects in PoK, including hydroelectric projects. In 2011, when Delhi complained about the presence of Chinese soldiers in PoK, Beijing had said they were engineers involved with those projects. 
 
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is not a single project, but comprises several projects related to energy generation, infrastructure development and business areas, according to Pakistan-based sources. The initial focus is on electricity production and some of the early projects would be ready in three years and provide about 10,400 MW of electricity. China has bankrolled several of Pakistan's civilian and defence projects over the years. 
 
What would also be closely followed in this trip is Sino-Pak dialogue on terror groups in Pakistan and their spillover impact in the restive Xinjiang province. Delhi, as well as Washington, would like Xi to impress upon Pakistani leadership to deal with cross-border terror sternly. The security of Chinese workers in Balochistan, as well as in other parts of Pakistan, will be a prime concern for Xi. In his talks with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Xi is also expected to discuss cooperation on Afghanistan. This is significant ahead of President Ashraf Ghani's trip to India next week. "China and Pakistan need to align security concerns more closely to strengthen security cooperation," Xi said a column he wrote in Pakistani media over the weekend, the ET reported.

India must be worried about China's $46 billion gift to Pakistan. Know why

 The surgical strike by the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> on Pakistan’s terror launch pads was monitored and approved by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Prime+Minister+Narendra+Modi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</a>. India wanted to turn off the tap of infiltration at its root on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan-Occupied+Kashmir&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir</a> (PoK) and not wait for <keyword id="36724" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Terrorists">terrorists</keyword> to cross the <keyword id="6355098" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="LoC">LoC</keyword>. 
 According to sources, the surgical strikes by the Indian <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army">army</keyword> were on terrorists and whom Pakistan term as "non-state actors", and "not on the Pakistan state as such". Experts say Pakistan, on the other hand, should have co-operated and neutralized these terrorist on almost half-a-dozen launch pads inside the PoK side of the Line of Control (LoC). 
 
Government felt that it was imperative that the root of this infiltration, the launch pads across the LoC be destroyed, as Pakistan has so far not co-operated to act against them regardless of many inputs provided by India on various occasions.&#xa0; 
 "As the Prime Minister had said earlier this week, 17 such attempts had been foiled by our sec<keyword id="71431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uri">uri</keyword>ty forces in the recent past but the terrorists managed to come in and attack Uri. Hence, armed with specific intelligence on the location of these launch pads, a call was taken by India to attack the centers of these terrorists. We have inflicted heavy casualties. Any Pakistani Army casualties could be due to their effort on protecting these launch pads...Pakistan should answer why its Army men were there," a senior government source told ET. 
 
The example of US forces neutralizing the known terrorist <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Osama+Bin+Laden+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Osama Bin Laden </a>in Abbottabad with having Pakistan involved is also being cited by many. 
 
“Our strike was in PoK across the LoC - PoK is considered by us as an integral part of India and even in International parlance, it is a disputed territory between India and Pakistan. Like the US in the Osama case, India also informed Pakistan of the surgical strike once the same was over - the government hence went public with the same in India too,” the source further said. 
 Pakistan, though has denied the <keyword id="3701659" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="surgical-attacks">surgical attacks</keyword> as the country doesn’t want to admit having terrorist camps on its side. Retaliation is still expected from Pakistan. DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh has already said that the terrorists killed by Indian Army had plans to attack Indian cities, states and metros will be cautioned towards the possibility of such attacks by terror modules ahead of the festive season.

PM Modi monitored the entire surgical strike on Pakistan’s terror hubs 

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi is all set to embark on a two-nation political tour, starting from Vietnam and followed by China, where he would be taking part in the <keyword id="3619515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="G20-Summit-in-Hangzhou">G20 Summit in Hangzhou</keyword>. 
 
The recent past has seen a lot of tiffs between the Indian and Chinese government, be it over China’s opposition to India’s NSG application, or the topic of expulsion of Chinese journalists from India and how it was reported in the Chinese media. 
 
However, since there is always some scope for a healthy discussion, here are five points that PM Modi would be pushing, as per a TNN report: 
 
Pakistan 
 
The recent unrest in Kashmir saw Pakistan openly supporting Kashmiri terrorists and separatists against India, after which, India questioned protests in PoK over rigged elections, stating that PoK PoK belonged to India. 
 
It was then that PM Modi had warned Pakistan that India would raise its human rights violations in Balochistan in case Islamabad continues to support terrorist activities in Kashmir. 
 
Since China is a close ally to Pakistan and is seen supporting it, there are high chances that Pakistan would be a topic of discussion between India and China. 
 
<keyword id="1934950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="China-Pakistan-economic-corridor">China-Pakistan Economic Corridor</keyword> (CPEC) 
 
India has been putting a lot of pressure on Islamabad, and this could prove to be harmful to the Chinese economy. CPEC is a $46-billion project, using which China wants to gain direct access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region. It has also invested heavily in the Gwadar Port in Balochistan for this very purpose. 
 
A critical part of this corridor runs through PoK, and now that India has decided to reinforce its legal claims on PoK, Beijing is bound to be upset. Even though the Chinese government has steered away from commenting on this, some sources say that Chinese think tanks have suggested China-Pakistan taking a joint military action against India so that the CPEC project is unhindered. 
 
<keyword id="430735" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="South-China-Sea">South China Sea</keyword> dispute 
 
This territorial dispute has made China stand against several nations, and this is benefitting India. 
 
After an international tribunal ruled in favour of India, that Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea were not justified, India had issued a statement in which it made a direct appeal to all nations involved in the conflict to “exercise self-restraint,” so that the dispute is not complicated further. 
 
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was on his visit to India recently, when he said that it was up to New Delhi to support Beijing on the South China Sea dispute or not, also making sure that New Delhi does not raise the South China Sea issue anywhere. 
 
India’s budding friendships with South East Asia countries 
 
Vietnam is also involved in the South China Sea dispute, and Modi will be visiting it before China, where he would be signing a contract for the supply of four patrol vessels to the Vietnamese military. He could also discuss defence cooperation with Vietnam, much to China’s chagrin. 
 
India is increasingly getting friendly with other countries in the South East Asia, and China will most likely see these emerging friendships as a not-entirely-friendly alliance. 
 
India’s infrastructure development along China border 
 
Till almost a decade back, India had not built any infrastructure alongside Chinese border, making sure that Chinese be able to advance slowly in case Beijing invades India. However, China built up high-quality roads and rail links along the 3500-km border with India. 
 
Now that India is also looking to push infrastructure projects there, China has said that these efforts would only escalate tensions between the two countries. It was only recently that Beijing criticized India’s decision to deploy the advanced, supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos on its border with China, claiming that this deployment was “the opposite” of peace and stability. This too could be a topic of discussion, given that China on its part has done heavy military deployment in that area.

PM Modi is set to visit China, and here is what he’ll be talking about

International news channel <keyword id="148173" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Al-Jazeera">Al Jazeera</keyword> was today forced to go off air in the country for five days as the government penalised it for repeatedly showing wrong maps of India. 
 
 
Al Jazeera today only showed a blank screen with a message saying that "as instructed by the ministry of Information and Broadcasting, this channel will not be available from 00.01 hours on 22nd April till 00.01 hours on 27th April 2015." 
 
 
Earlier in an order, I&amp;B ministry had said that it had come to its notice that Al Jazeera had shown a wrong map of India in some of its broadcasts in 2013 and 2014, after which the matter was referred to Surveyor General of India (SGI). 
 
 
The SGI had observed that in some of the maps displayed by Al Jazeera, "a portion of Indian territory of Jammu and Kashmir (i.e. PoK and Aksai Chin) has not been shown as a part of Indian territory." The channel also did not show Lakshadweep and Andaman Islands in some of the maps, the SGI said. 
 The SGI also said that the maps were not in accordance with the Survey of India copyright map and is also against the National Map policy, 2005 and map restriction policy issued by Ministry of Defence from time to time. The <keyword id="6374106" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ministry-of-External-Affairs">Ministry of External Affairs</keyword> also pointed out similar airing of a wrong map by the channel. 
 
In their reply to a Show Cause Notice, Al Jazeera said that all maps that are displayed by them are generated by an internationally known software used by Global News Providers. The channel also added that it takes <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword>'s concerns about maps very seriously and accordingly reviews all its India and Pakistan maps to ensure compatibility with recent official UN map. 
 
 As per the order of the I&amp;B ministry, the <keyword id="1885025" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Inter-Ministerial-Committee">Inter Ministerial Committee</keyword> (IMC) which was also attended by representatives of the MEA, after deliberations, held that the channel had clearly violated the provisions of the programme code and recommended to prohibit transmission or re-transmission of the channel throughout India for five days.

The recent past has seen a lot of tiffs between the Indian and Chinese government, be it over China's opposition to India's NSG application, or the topic of expulsion of Chinese journalists from India and how it was reported in the Chinese media. 
 
However, since there is always some scope for a healthy discussion, here are five points that PM Modi would be pushing, as per a TNN report: 
 
Pakistan 
 
The recent unrest in Kashmir saw Pakistan openly supporting Kashmiri terrorists and separatists against India, after which, India questioned protests in PoK over rigged elections, stating that PoK PoK belonged to India. 
 
It was then that PM Modi had warned Pakistan that India would raise its human rights violations in Balochistan in case Islamabad continues to support terrorist activities in Kashmir. 
 
Since China is a close ally to Pakistan and is seen supporting it, there are high chances that Pakistan would be a topic of discussion between India and China. 
 
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) 
 
India has been putting a lot of pressure on Islamabad, and this could prove to be harmful to the Chinese economy. CPEC is a $46-billion project, using which China wants to gain direct access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region. It has also invested heavily in the Gwadar Port in Balochistan for this very purpose. 
 
A critical part of this corridor runs through PoK, and now that India has decided to reinforce its legal claims on PoK, Beijing is bound to be upset. Even though the Chinese government has steered away from commenting on this, some sources say that Chinese think tanks have suggested China-Pakistan taking a joint military action against India so that the CPEC project is unhindered. 
 
South China Sea dispute 
 
This territorial dispute has made China stand against several nations, and this is benefitting India. 
 
After an international tribunal ruled in favour of India, that Beijing's claims in the South China Sea were not justified, India had issued a statement in which it made a direct appeal to all nations involved in the conflict to "exercise self-restraint," so that the dispute is not complicated further. 
 
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was on his visit to India recently, when he said that it was up to New Delhi to support Beijing on the South China Sea dispute or not, also making sure that New Delhi does not raise the South China Sea issue anywhere. 
 
India's budding friendships with South East Asia countries 
 
Vietnam is also involved in the South China Sea dispute, and Modi will be visiting it before China, where he would be signing a contract for the supply of four patrol vessels to the Vietnamese military. He could also discuss defence cooperation with Vietnam, much to China's chagrin. 
 
India is increasingly getting friendly with other countries in the South East Asia, and China will most likely see these emerging friendships as a not-entirely-friendly alliance. 
 
India's infrastructure development along China border 
 
Till almost a decade back, India had not built any infrastructure alongside Chinese border, making sure that Chinese be able to advance slowly in case Beijing invades India. However, China built up high-quality roads and rail links along the 3500-km border with India. 
 
Now that India is also looking to push infrastructure projects there, China has said that these efforts would only escalate tensions between the two countries. It was only recently that Beijing criticized India's decision to deploy the advanced, supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos on its border with China, claiming that this deployment was "the opposite" of peace and stability. This too could be a topic of discussion, given that China on its part has done heavy military deployment in that area.
