"The mRNA vaccines produce the highest levels of antibody response and in our analysis confer more durable protection than other vaccines or exposures," said lead author Jeffrey Townsend from Yale University, in the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "However, it is important to remember that natural immunity and vaccination are not mutually exclusive. Many people will have partial immunity from multiple sources, so understanding the relative durability is key to deciding when to provide a boost to your immune system," Townsend added. Since Covid-19 vaccines first became available to protect against infection and severe illness, there has been much uncertainty about how long the protection lasts and when it might be necessary for individuals to get an additional booster shot. For the study, the team quantified the likelihood of future infection following natural infection or vaccination by the Moderna, Pfizer, Johnson &amp; Johnson, or Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines. The risk of breakthrough infections, in which a person becomes infected despite being vaccinated, depends on the vaccine type. According to the study, current mRNA vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna) offer the greatest duration of protection, nearly three times as long as natural infection and the Johnson &amp; Johnson and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines. Global pharma major Pfizer on Thursday said it remains committed to engaging with the Indian government to explore opportunities to make Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine available in the country. The UK on Wednesday became the first country to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 with the UK regulator Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)granting a temporary authorisation for its emergency use. "Right now we are in discussions with many governments around the world and remain committed to engaging with the Government of India and explore opportunities to make this vaccine available for use in the country," a Pfizer spokesperson said in a statement. Pfizer is committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have access to the vaccine, and is working closely with governments, it added. "During this pandemic phase, Pfizer will supply this vaccine only through government contracts based on agreements with respective government authorities and following regulatory authorisation or approval," the statement said. The UK regulator, MHRA has granted a temporary authorisation for emergency use of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. This constitutes the first Emergency Use Authorisation following a worldwide phase 3 trial of a vaccine to help fight the pandemic, Pfizer said on Wednesday. "As we anticipate further authorizations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world," Pfizer Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said on Wednesday. Pfizer seeks emergency use authorisation for its COVID-19 vaccine in India

An 87-year-old Indian-origin man from the north east of England will become one of the first people in the world to get a vaccine against COVID-19 when he receives his Pfizer/BioNTech jab at a hospital in Newcastle on Tuesday. Hari Shukla from Tyne and Wear said he feels it is his duty to receive his first of the two-dose vaccine, a moment UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed as a "huge step forward" as Tuesday was dubbed "V-Day" or Vaccine Day in the UK. "I'm so pleased we are hopefully coming towards the end of this pandemic and I am delighted to be doing my bit by having the vaccine, I feel it is my duty to do so and do whatever I can to help," said Shukla. "Having been in contact with the NHS (National Health Service), I know how hard they all work and the greatest respect for them - they have a heart of gold and I am grateful for everything they have done to keep us safe during the pandemic," he said. Shukla was notified by the NHS based on the criteria set by the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation as part of a phased rollout plan based on those at the highest risk of death from the deadly virus. People aged 80 and over, care home workers as well as NHS workers who are at higher risk will be first in line to receive the "life-saving jab". "Today marks a huge step forward in the UK's fight against coronavirus, as we begin delivering the vaccine to the first patients across the whole country. Both of these mixes induced higher antibodies than two doses of AstraZeneca, while the highest antibody response was seen after two doses of Pfizer, and the highest T cell response from AstraZeneca followed by Pfizer. "We already know that both standard schedules are very effective against severe disease and hospitalisations, including against the Delta variant when given at eight to 12 weeks apart," lead investigator Professor Matthew Snape, from varsity was quoted as saying. He however, added that the findings did not undermine the UK policy of giving people the same jab twice. But, they do offer such flexibility for vaccine rollout in the future. "Mixing doses could provide us with even greater flexibility for a booster programme, while also supporting countries who have further to go with their vaccine rollouts, and who may be experiencing supply difficulties," UK's deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, was quoted as saying by the BBC. Two doses are important to give the fullest protection and teach the body to make antibodies and T cells to block and kill Covid. Meanwhile, a pre-print study suggests that a third dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, given more than six months after the second, boosts the immune system, the BBC reported. Covaxin is being indigenously developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Bernie Sanders on Sunday called for drug companies to waive intellectual property rights to their COVID-19 vaccines so that the inoculations can be produced by various countries in an effort to slow the spread of the deadly disease in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-first-country-to-record-400000-single-day-coronavirus-cases-2021-5">hard-hit nations, like India.</a>"We have got to obviously make sure that every American gets vaccinated as quickly as possible," Sanders said during an appearance on <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/full-portman-there-s-a-way-forward-for-a-bipartisan-agreement-on-infrastructure-111204933909?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_mtp">NBC News' "Meet the Press."</a> "But not only do we have a moral responsibility to help the rest of the world, it's in our own self-interest. If this pandemic continues to spread in other countries, it's going to come back and bite us at one point or another." Sanders, an Independent, also weighed in on the debate over whether US pharmaceutical companies should relinquish their intellectual property rights to allow other <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-says-millions-of-americans-skipping-second-covid-19-dose-2021-4">companies across the world to produce vaccines.</a>"The second thing we should do is not only make sure that excess vaccines in the United States get around to countries that need it. We should deal with this issue through the World Trade Organization."And I think what we have got to say right now to the drug companies - when millions of lives are at stake around the world - yes, allow other countries to have these intellectual property rights so they can produce the vaccines that are desperately needed in poor countries," he said. Sanders and nine other Senate Democrats urged President Joe Biden last week to put his support behind a temporary patent waiver that would allow vaccines to be produced locally by other manufacturers, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/senators-urge-biden-back-temporary-wto-waiver-ip-rights-speed-vaccine-access-2021-04-16/">Reuters</a> reported.Pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, Moderna, and <keyword id="92247" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Johnson-Johnson">Johnson &amp; Johnson</keyword>, and the US Chamber of Commerce have opposed such calls.They argue that allowing other manufacturers to produce their vaccines could lead to issues with safety. <ul><li><keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine is 90% effective in those who haven’t been infected by coronavirus before. </li><li>This is higher than the efficacy target laid out by White House coronavirus advisor Anthony Fauci of 50% to 60%</li><li>At this level, the COVID-19 vaccine will give people protection within 28 days of the first dose, the latest trial shows.</li></ul>The COVID-19 vaccine being developed by the US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German biotech firm BioNTech is getting closer to becoming a reality. The latest data from their late-stage vaccine trial shows that their COVID-19 vaccine is <a href="https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-vaccine-candidate-against">90% more effective</a> in preventing an infection if a person has never come in contact with it before. This means that those who get the vaccine will be protected within 28 days of the first dose — and there is only a two-dose schedule. This is far more effective than the threshold laid out by the White House coronavirus advisor Anthony Fauci, who has previously stated that a vaccine that is 50% to 60% effective would be acceptable. However, the efficacy of the final vaccine may vary as more results continue to pour in. “The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” said Pfizer chairman and CEO <a href="https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-vaccine-candidate-against">Albert Bourla</a> in a statement. The current findings are based on an interim analysis conducted after 94 participants contracted the virus and will continue until 164 cases have occurred. If the data holds up, it could mean a milestone for the world, which has been scrambling to find a cure for COVID-19 for nearly a year now. Current projections forecast that Pfizer and BioTech are poised to produce up to 50 million doses of their vaccine in 2020, and another 1.3 billion in 2021. The complete data from the phase 3 trial, which kicked off back in July, will be submitted for scientific peer-review and subsequent submission. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Senate Democrats are asking vaccine makers what their plans are to share intellectual property.</li><li>The questions come as developing nations struggle to inoculate their populations against <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword>.</li></ul>In the next few weeks, more than half of Americans will have received at least one dose of a <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> vaccine. In much of the developing world, if current trends hold, people will be lucky to get a shot by 2022 - all the more reason, a group of US senators say, that pharmaceutical companies should be sharing their know-how and hastening the end to this global health crisis.Sharing intellectual property, "such as vaccine recipes and manufacturing information... could drastically expand vaccine development and access," states a <a href="https://www.warren.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/2021.04.28%20Letter%20to%20Pfizer%20re%20India%20COVID%20outbreak.pdf">letter to Pfizer</a>, sent Wednesday and signed by Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Edward Markey, Tammy Baldwin, Jeff Merkley, and Christopher Murphy, all Democrats.In their letter, the lawmakers ask the pharmaceutical giant whether it has shared any of its proprietary knowledge with a group set up by the World Trade Organization for that purpose - and, specifically, whether it plans to partner with any companies in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> to produce its highly effective mRNA vaccine.The lawmakers sent identical letters to both <keyword id="92247" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Johnson-Johnson">Johnson &amp; Johnson</keyword> and <keyword id="4912868" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="moderna">Moderna</keyword>.<h2>Crisis in India spurs calls for action</h2>India, which manufactures the <keyword id="6409874" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword> vaccine, has seen a major spike in COVID-19 cases, in part due to limited vaccination, as well as the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's poor handling of the crisis. Doctors in India have accused Modi of being a "<a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2021/04/27/pm-modi-a-super-spreader-of-covid-19-says-indian-medical-association-official.html">super spreader</a>" for holding major political rallies in the weeks preceding the latest surge, with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/04/28/world/covid-vaccine-coronavirus-cases">a record 357,700 new cases</a> reported on Wednesday. The government has also been faulted for failing to secure enough emergency oxygen for local hospitals.But there is little doubt that, the failings of governments aside, wider production of COVID-19 vaccines could ameliorate the pandemic and help limit the spread of new, potentially more dangerous variants.Developing nations, as well as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-world-leaders-urge-biden-suspend-covid-19-vaccine-patents-2021-4">former world leaders and Nobel laureates</a>, have been urging President Joe Biden to sign off on a WTO waiver that would allow countries such as India and South Africa to put US intellectual property to use without fear of repercussion. Industry groups have argued that such a waiver would discourage private innovation.Moderna has said it will not enforce its vaccine patents, although that does not appear to be sufficient reassurance for WTO members to begin unauthorized production.Sharing intellectual property would not immediately address the current wave of infection, but Suhaib Siddiqi, the company's former director of chemistry, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/drug-companies-called-share-vaccine-info-22d92afbc3ea9ed519be007f8887bcf6">told the Associated Press</a> that a modern factory would be able to begin producing the company's vaccine in less than four months.Earlier this week, the Biden administration, which along with the European Union has thus far declined to back the campaign for a WTO waiver, said it would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-sending-oxygen-supplies-covid-19-vaccine-materials-to-india-2021-4">begin sharing</a> its supply of AstraZeneca doses with India as soon as possible.US pharmaceutical companies, meanwhile, say they will be drafting a response to the lawmakers' questions."We are committed to the health and safety of people worldwide and look forward to replying to the senators' letter," Lisa Cannellos, a spokesperson for Johnson &amp; Johnson, told Insider.A spokesperson for <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> confirmed receipt of the letter but declined to comment.The lawmakers have requested that answers be provided no later than May 11.Have a news tip?
