<keyword id="3519905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-ceo" source="Orion">Paytm CEO</keyword> <keyword id="198636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar-sharma" source="Orion">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> has said that macro conditions have affected global fintech companies, including <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, but the fintech industry will soon bounce back, driven by payments revenue.<br /><br />Speaking at IAMAI's 'India Digital Summit 2022', Sharma said, "We are a payments company and everyone understands it and payment has a derivative revenue line item in financial services and is driven by credit."<br /><br />"The success of Paytm will depend on what we do with monetisation, led by financial services. Payment is a revenue line item which is growing massively," he emphasised on Wednesday.<br /><br />Sharma said that globally, we probably went in at a time (for the public IPO) when QE, free money and many other parameters brought in a little bit of spookiness into the market, in terms of pricing.<br /><br />"Some South American companies are 70 per cent down. Well, that's not the reason for it completely, that's a macro reason," Sharma said.<br /><br />Globally, fintech players and emerging market players saw weak support from the markets as PayPal, Afterpay, Affirm, Square and many others were down almost 30 per cent on an average.<br /><br />Most recently, Grab, the Singapore-based company, made its market debut and is also a 'super app' saw its share price drop by over 20 per cent on listing day.<br /><br />Paytm made a big bang debut in the stock market. The company's $2.5 billion IPO was not just India's largest but also the largest APAC fintech IPO ever and also the second largest fintech IPO of 2021 globally.<br /><br />Overall, <keyword id="8069901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-ipo" source="Orion">Paytm IPO</keyword> is the fourth largest fintech stock debut.<br /><br />"Paytm, which opened at an offer price of Rs 2,150 braved the markets on a tough day and its share price was also impacted. But Paytm came out stronger than how most other fintech companies fared during the same time," said Dr Ravi Singh, Research Head, Share India.<br /><br />Analysts at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have assigned a 'BUY' rating to the Paytm stock with a target price of Rs Rs 1,630-Rs 1,875.<br /><br />The company during its second quarter earnings results showed how its revenue grew by 64 per cent on a yearly basis to Rs 10.9 billion.<br /><br />During the July-September quarter, Paytm saw its contribution profit grow to Rs 2.6 billion in Q2 FY 2022, year-on-year increase of 592 per cent. The contribution margin jumped to 24.0 per cent of revenue from 5.7 per cent the previous year.<br /><br />"Paytm has grown to be a financial services giant, which brings with it more monetizable opportunities. Also, its entry into insurance sectors has been rejected by regulators. Buffett's company poured about $300 million into Paytm in August 2018, valuing it at roughly $10 billion at the time.</p><p>Berkshire still owns 17 million shares, or a 2.8% stake, Paytm's IPO filing shows. The fintech startup was privately valued at $16 billion in November 2019, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-25/paytm-is-said-to-raise-1-billion-from-softbank-and-others">according to Bloomberg</a>. If it secures that valuation as a public company, Berkshire's shares would be worth about $480 million - a 60% gain in three years.</p><p>Buffett and his team are poised to cash out some of those profits. Berkshire and other Paytm investors such as SoftBank, Alibaba, and Jack Ma's Ant Financial have agreed to sell an undisclosed portion of their stakes during the IPO.</p><p>Berkshire's investment in Paytm - a private, foreign, and unprofitable technology startup - might seem out of character for Buffett, who famously sticks to established US businesses that he understands deeply such as Coca-Cola, or American Express.</p><p>In fact it was Todd Combs, one of Buffett's portfolio managers, who negotiated the deal. Paytm's CEO <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/more-than-money-berkshires-todd-combs-coming-on-paytm-board-is-the-best-outcome-vijay-shekhar-sharma/articleshow/65578696.cms">confirmed that fact</a> to ET Now, and Combs recently retired from the fintech's board. Combs has spearheaded several of Berkshire's recent tech bets, including its investments in StoneCo, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/warre-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-570-million-snowflake-ipo-rare-unicorn-2020-9">Snowflake</a>, and most likely <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/warren-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-invest-500-million-nubank-brazil-fintech-2021-6">Nubank last month</a>.</p><p>Paytm, previously known as One97 Communications, posted a 10% drop in revenue to the equivalent of $427 million in the year to March 31. That reflected a 38% slump in e-commerce and cloud services revenue, which offset sales growth of 24% in the payment and financial-services division. However, a sharp reduction in marketing and promotional expenses meant Paytm's after-tax loss shrunk 42% to $228 million.</p>

The increase in domestic investors' shareholding is a vote of confidence in the company's future prospects.<br /><br />Global investment firm <keyword id="6361649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="goldman-sachs" source="Orion">Goldman Sachs</keyword> expects Paytm to be adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) positive by the March quarter, two quarters ahead of the estimates and the company's guidance of September 2023. Goldman Sachs has reiterated its 'Buy' rating for Paytm and has upwardly revised its share price target to Rs 1,120. The firm has stated that the current share price continues to offer a compelling entry point into India's largest and one of the fastest-growing fintech platforms.<br /><br />The increase in shareholding by domestic investors is also a positive sign for the Indian economy, as it shows that more and more Indians are investing in the country's rapidly growing fintech sector. An increase in retail shareholding can bring a number of benefits for a company. One of the most significant benefits is increased liquidity, which can help to stabilise the stock price and improve overall market sentiment. Mutual funds increase their stake in Paytm

<br />In October 2018, Paytm had partnered with SoftBank and Yahoo Japan to offer digital payment solutions in Japan. Through this collaboration, Yahoo Japan suspended its own wallet giving PayPay direct access to all its Yahoo wallet consumers. <br /><br />SoftBank is one of the major investors in Paytm. In 2017, Softbank had made its biggest bet in the Indian ecosystem by pumping in $1.4 billion in Paytm. <br /><br />Paytm is not the only Indian startup backed by Softbank which went to Japan. Ritesh Agarwal’s OYO where Softbank is a key investor, entered the Japanese market, thanks to its famous backer. In April 2019, OYO announced its partnership with SoftBank Corp and SoftBank Vision fund to launch Oyo Hotels Japan.<br />

Paytm’s Japan subsidiary PayPay nets 10 million users in 10 months

This is 9% lower than the issue price of ₹2,150. And, analysts at Macquarie have warned that the stock may go down a lot more before it becomes attractive. <br /><br />Analysts at Macquarie, a global investment bank, have set the target price for Paytm at ₹1,200, that’s 44% below the price at which IPO investors got their shares. Macquarie cited the high price of the IPO and the intense competition from the likes of Amazon, Google and Flipkart for its pessimism around Paytm.<br /><br />“People ask me how do you raise money at such a high price? I say, I don’t raise money on a price but I raise money on a purpose,” said One97 Communications founder and chief executive (CEO) Vijay Shekhar Sharma in his address before the listing ceremony at the BombayStock Exchange.<br /><br />Paytm's shares were trading at ₹1,673 at 12:22 p.m., a discount of nearly 22%. The closing price for November 18 was ₹1564, which is 27% below the issue price.<br /><br /><strong>Paytm is still bigger than Britannia, Bajaj Auto and Zomato<br /></strong><br />The Noida-based Paytm listed at a market cap of ₹1,26,737 crore ($17 billion), which is nearly $3 billion lower than the $19.3 billion-$19.9 billion valuation of the public issue. <br /><br />The fear around the price had set in long before the listing. The remaining ₹10,000 crore was raised as offer for sale (OfS), giving partial exits to Alibaba’s Ant Group, Softbank and others.<br /><strong><br />Experts ask investors to wait it out before investing in Paytm's shares</strong><br /><br />Fresh investors should not invest in Paytm at the moment but wait for another 15 days for the stock to consolidate, Kranthi Bathini, Director - Equity strategy at WealthMills securities, told Business Insider.<br /><br />“Serious investors need to wait for a couple of earning quarters and not jump into stocks like what happened in Nykaa,” he added.<br /><br />Nykaa — which had a stellar debut on the stock market last week — crossed the ₹1 lakh crore market cap on the first day of listing. However, the company’s revenue declined to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/nykaa-will-spend-its-ipo-money-on-setting-up-retail-stores-and-repaying-loans/articleshow/84996894.cms">₹1.2 crore in the July to September quarter,</a> which is significantly lower than ₹27 crore it reported in the same quarter last year.<br /><br />Paytm received bids for 9.11 crore shares versus the 4.83 crore shares up for sale, which means that the issue was oversubscribed by 1.8X. According to a Bloomberg report <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/paytm-may-drop-its-pre-ipo-sale-as-advisors-recommend-lower-valuation/articleshow/87187525.cms">published in October</a>, Paytm was advised to go for a lower valuation than $20 billion in its pre-IPO round but the company decided to skip the round altogether. Even stock brokerage firm Macquarie had given Paytm a with an underperform rating, and projected that the stock may fall to as much as ₹1,200 (compared to an issue price of ₹2,150) any time in the next one year .<br /><br />Interestingly, Paytm was the highest valued Indian startup between 2019 to me this year. The company got a valuation of $19.9 billion in its public issue. It also offers wealth management solutions through Paytm Money and banking services through Paytm Payments Banks.The company has 333 million total customers, 114 million annual transacting users and 21 million registered merchants. <br /><br />Paytm has a strong market share in digital payments via the unified payments interface (UPI) but the margin is zero in peer-to-peer payments and wafer thin when merchants get paid. <br /><br />In the personal finance space ⁠— where Paytm sells mutual funds, gold and stocks ⁠— it has a less than 1% market share and makes zero commission, according to Macquarie. The company reported a revenue of ₹3,186 crore, with net loss of ₹1,761 crore. “Loss-making businesses will find it hard to sustain premium valuations,” Choksey added.<br /><br />Ravi Singh, head of research and vice president at ShareIndia, noted that Paytm’s future growth is a key to watch for long term investors. “We advise the investors after looking at the overall valuations and earlier losses of Paytm, to book their positions and wait for 1700-1600 levels for fresh investment. I say, I don’t raise money on a price but I raise money on a purpose,” founder and chief executive officer Vijay Shekhar Sharma. He wanted India to be as excited about his dream of a super app for anything that can be bought and sold online. <br /><br />But many others have argued that a smartphone itself is a super app. Another startup founder Kavin Mittal, the man behind the $1.4 billion Hike Messenger, had similar ambitions but found it to be a misguided goal and dropped the plan in January 2021. <br /><br />Will Sharma prove his detractors wrong with Paytm? New Delhi, May 12 () Paytm Money on Tuesday said it has added National Pension System (NPS) to its app after approval from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).<p> "This new addition is expected to benefit investors by helping them save for their retirement while also enabling tax benefits," a statement said.</p><p> In 2009, the 'All Citizen Model' in NPS was launched that allows any individual to enroll in NPS.</p><p> Till date, 13 lakh investors have enrolled under the 'All Citizen Model', the statement said, adding that Paytm Money intends to increase this number manifold by enabling investments in NPS via a simple and quick digital investing experience.</p><p> "In a country like India with its huge young working population, retirement planning needs to be simplified. We want to bring NPS investing to millions of Indians and help them build a retirement corpus.</p><p> "It sits perfectly with our vision of democratising wealth management in India," Amit Nayyar, President (Financial Services) at Paytm, said.</p><p> NPS, as an offering, also incentivises users to save additional taxes and hence, complements the wide range of existing tax-saver mutual funds on Paytm's platform, he added.</p><p> The statement said Paytm Money will offer NPS with the choice to invest in tier 1 (Tax Saver scheme) and tier 2 (zero lock-in period scheme).</p> Paytm Money has more than 5 million users.
