Indian and Chinese troops appeared heading for a long haul as their tense standoff in the disputed areas of <keyword id="1358217" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pangong-Tso">Pangong Tso</keyword> and <keyword id="9241086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword> along the <keyword id="49399" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Actual-Control">Line of Actual Control</keyword> in eastern <keyword id="26604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ladakh">Ladakh</keyword> showed no signs of abating even as efforts to de-escalate the tension through talks continued. In the midst of the flare-ups, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> on Sunday categorically rejected reports that Indian patrol teams were detained by Chinese troops in Eastern Ladakh in the last few days, but did not provide any details of the current situation in the region. "There has been no detention of Indian soldiers at the borders. We categorically deny this. It only hurts national interests when media outlets publish unsubstantiated news," the Army said in a statement. People familiar with the situation in the region said the two sides were engaged in trying to resolve the dispute, but there was no indication of a positive outcome yet as both the armies continued to bolster their positions in disputed areas of Pangong Tso and Galwan Valley and Demchok. The Chinese side has particularly strengthened its presence in the Galwan Valley, erecting around 100 tents in the last two weeks and bringing in heavy equipment for construction of bunkers. The Indian side has conveyed its strong objection to China pitching tents and bringing in heavy equipment during the meetings between local commanders of the two armies last week. There have been reports of multiple incidents of transgressions by Chinese troops in several areas in Eastern Ladakh and soldiers from the two sides were involved in scuffles on at least two occasions, sources said. The sources said the Indian Army has also been increasing its strength in both Pangong Tso lake, Galwan Valley and Demchok. The Indian troops are also resorting to "aggressive patrolling" in several sensitive areas including Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldi, they said. The situation in Eastern Ladakh deteriorated after around 250 Chinese and Indian soldiers were engaged in a violent face-off on the evening of May 5 which spilled over to the next day before the two sides agreed to "disengage" following a meeting at the level of local commanders. Over 100 Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured in the violence. The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in North Sikkim on May 9. India on Thursday said the Chinese military was hindering normal patrolling by its troops and asserted that India has always taken a very responsible approach towards border management. At a media briefing, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava also strongly refuted China's contention that the tension was triggered due to trespassing by Indian forces on the Chinese side. India's response came two days after China accused the Indian Army of trespassing into its territory, claiming that it was an "attempt to unilaterally change the status" of the LAC in Sikkim and Ladakh. On May 5, the Indian and <keyword id="47942" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-army">Chinese army</keyword> personnel clashed with iron rods, sticks, and even resorted to stone-pelting in the Pangong Tso lake area in which soldiers on both sides sustained injuries. In a separate incident, nearly 150 Indian and Chinese military personnel were engaged in a face-off near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector on May 9. At least 10 soldiers from both sides sustained injuries. The troops of India and China were engaged in a 73-day stand-off in Doklam tri-junction in 2017 which even triggered fears of a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long LAC. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of southern Tibet while India contests it. Both sides have been asserting that pending the final resolution of the boundary issue, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. China has been critical of India's reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, and has particularly criticised New Delhi for making Ladakh a union territory. China lays claim over several parts of Ladakh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first informal summit in April 2018 in the Chinese city of Wuhan, months after the Doklam standoff. In the summit, the two leaders decided to issue "strategic guidance" to their militaries to strengthen communications so that they can build trust and understanding. Modi and Xi held their second informal summit in Mamallapuram near Chennai in October last year with a focus on further broadening bilateral ties. Standoff continues at India-China border with no indication of 'positive outcome'

On July 24, the two sides held another round of diplomatic talks on the border issue. After the talks, the Ministry of External Affairs said both sides agreed that an early and complete disengagement of the troops along the LAC in accordance with bilateral agreement and protocols was essential for overall development of bilateral relations. The sources said India conveyed a firm message to the Chinese side that it has to implement the disengagement process as agreed to during the four rounds of corps commander-level talks between the two militaries. Fresh negotiations between military commanders from India and China starts today to end friction in Ladakh

<ul><li>Indian and Chinese troops reportedly fired weapons in the air to scare each other near <keyword id="9899667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shenpao-mountain">Shenpao Mountain</keyword> along the southern bank of <keyword id="837007" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pangong-Tso-Lake">Pangong Tso Lake</keyword> in Eastern Ladakh where both countries share a border. </li><li>China claims that the fresh skirmish is a result of Indian troops firing 'threats' at the the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which forced them to take counter measures. </li><li>"We request the Indian side to immediately stop dangerous actions," said Colonel Zhang Shuili of the PLA's Western Threater Command in a statement.</li></ul>India and China indulged in a fresh skirmish at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh where the militaries of both countries fired in the air to scare and push back each other. The incident happened near Shenpao mountain near the south bank of Pangong Tso (Lake) on Monday. China issued a statement that the Indian army "blatantly fired threats" to the patrol personnel of the Chinese border guards who had made representations, and the Chinese border guards were forced to take "countermeasures to stabilise the situation on the ground". "India's actions seriously violated the relevant agreements and agreements between China and India, pushing up regional tensions and easily causing misunderstandings and misjudgments," China stated. The statement said it is serious military provocations and are of very bad nature. New skirmish at India-China border along Pangong Tso Lake

China lost 722 soldiers killed and 1,697 wounded.<h2>Modern tank forces</h2><div type="image" title="India army Arjun tank beach Chennai" height="1333" width="2000" msid="82407123" hostid="261"></div>Both India and China set about building up their militaries after the 1962 war.Today, India's tank force is made up primarily of three models. Two of them, the <a href="https://guardingindia.com/china/exclusive-why-are-the-indian-army-trusting-t-72-ajeya-tanks-for-lac/" target="_top">T-72 "Ajeya"</a> and <a href="https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/meet-indias-t-90m-bhishma-tank-russian-tech-indian-made-136987" target="_top">T-90 "Bhishma"</a> main battle tanks (MBTs), are built in India using Russian designs. The third, the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-what-is-the-arjun-main-battle-tank-mk-1a-7188226/" target="_top">Arjun</a>, is of Indian design.The Russian tanks, designed to operate in the cold, make up most of India's fleet of about 4,000 tanks. The Arjun has had a <a href="https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/why-indias-army-hates-its-homemade-arjun-tank-119911" target="_top">troubled rollout</a>, and only 124 are in service.China's People's Liberation Army, or PLA, maintains a large number of legacy models from the Cold War, like the Type 59, Type 69, and Type 80/88 tanks, but China's tank force is centered on three modern models: the <a href="https://21stcenturyasianarmsrace.com/2017/12/20/the-pla-loves-its-thousands-of-type-96-tanks/" target="_top">Type 96</a> and <a href="http://www.military-today.com/tanks/type_99.htm" target="_top">Type 99</a> MBTs, and the new <a href="http://www.military-today.com/tanks/ztq_15.htm" target="_top">Type 15</a>.While the Type 96 and Type 99 are MBTs, the Type 15 is one of the few light tanks developed this century.<div type="image" title="China army type 99 tank Army Games Russia" height="1334" width="2000" msid="82407126" hostid="261"></div>The Type 96 and Type 99 weigh about 42 tons and 54 tons, respectively, and are armed with 125 mm guns, whereas the Type 15 weighs just 35 tons and has a 105 mm gun.By comparison, India's T-72, T-90, and Arjun tanks weigh about 41 tons, 46 tons, and 68 tons, respectively. The T-72 and T-90 are armed with 125 mm guns and the Arjun with a 120 mm.Despite being smaller and under-gunned, the Type 15 is far more capable in the mountainous terrain of the Himalayas than its Indian counterparts.The Type 15 is just one of the PLA's <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1190083.shtml" target="_top">numerous new weapon systems</a> designed with mountain operations in mind, and China has <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93-FeziqiLA" target="_top">shown </a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93-FeziqiLA" target="_top">it</a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93-FeziqiLA" target="_top"> off in a number of live-fire drills</a> in Tibet.Both the PLA's Xinjiang and Tibet military commands have <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202102/1214633.shtml" target="_top">received</a> Type 15s. They have also been deployed to the Sino-Indian border, <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-india-deploys-t-72-t-90-tanks-infantry-combat-vehicles-along-lac-in-eastern-ladakh-2845676" target="_top">as have</a> India's T-72 and T-90s.<h2>At the 'roof of the world'</h2><div type="image" title="India China tanks armor Pangong Ladakh border" height="1332" width="2000" msid="82407127" hostid="261"></div>The <a href="https://twitter.com/ShivAroor/status/1361600793678241794" target="_top">images</a> and a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF9ZfCggVOM" target="_top">video</a> released by the Indian military appear to indicate that the pullout around Pangong Tso was a coordinated event in which tanks were purposely shown to withdraw one at a time.Indian T-72 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) <a href="https://twitter.com/ShivAroor/status/1361614678284140544/photo/1" target="_top">can be seen</a> on the Indian side of the border, as can a number of small fighting positions and foxholes.The Chinese armored force that can be seen is more diverse. A few of the tanks <a href="https://twitter.com/PBNS_India/status/1361612912062730243/photo/2" target="_top">appear</a> to be legacy models, likely Type 80/88s. There <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/dh-galleries/photos/in-pics-indian-chinese-troops-disengage-from-pangong-lake-951782#5" target="_top">also appear</a> to be several modern models, most likely Type 96s or Type 99As.<a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/dh-galleries/photos/in-pics-indian-chinese-troops-disengage-from-pangong-lake-951782#6" target="_top">Another image</a> shows at least 12 Chinese <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/china_chinese_light_armored_armoured_vehicle_uk/zbd-04_zbd97_armoured_infantry_fighting_vehicle_technical_data_sheet_specifications_information_uk.html" target="_top">ZBD-04 IFVs</a> and three other armored vehicles, possibly tracked variants of the <a href="http://www.military-today.com/missiles/hq_17.htm" target="_top">HQ-17</a> short-range surface-to-air-missile system, <a href="https://www.armyrecognition.com/china_artillery_vehicles_and_weapon_systems_uk/pgz-07_twin_35mm_self-propelled_anti-aircraft_gun_data_sheet_specifications_description_pictures.html" target="_top">Type 09</a> self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery units, or a combination of both.It's unclear if the tanks and IFVs were always deployed so close to one another or if they were only brought forward for verification during the disengagement.What is clear is that both sides are far more mechanized, capable, and lethal than they were in 1962.The pullback from Pangong Tso has not been followed by additional pullbacks in other contested areas, as was originally hoped. Recent reporting <a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/3131031/china-india-border-dispute-was-new-delhis-pull-out-pangong-tso" target="_top">suggests</a> some Indian officials may regret pulling back from a strategically important area with little to show for it.Despite the difficult conditions in a region known as the "roof of the world," flare ups along the border are still a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-55793112" target="_top">real possibility</a>.With so much heavy hardware present, future fighting in the area could be much deadlier than before.

Though the Centre has trumpeted the India-China disengagement along the <keyword id="49399" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Actual-Control">Line of Actual Control</keyword> (LAC) in Ladakh as a victory, Army veteran Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag called it pragmatic acceptance of weakness and Beijing's 1959 claim. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Gen. Panag claimed that the "disengagement" is happening exactly as per China's 1959 claim line because India has no military capability to alter the situation. However, he said, it is "good for the long term peace" since the disengagement in Ladakh is likely a part of the broader plan for settlement of border disputes between the two countries. The plan, he presumed, will include acceptance of McMohan Line in Northeast with some give and take between New Delhi and Beijing, as per the 1959 proposal. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="80831679" title="India and China begin to disengage from friction areas along the border — terms and conditions apply" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> In 1959, China's then Prime Minister Zhou Enlai had proposed to the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru that the armies of both the countries withdraw 20 kms from the McMohan Line in the East and from the line up to which each side exercised actual control in the West. Through its intrusions since May, China has already reached the 1959 claim line in Depsang and north of Pangong Tso, according to Panag. The militaries of both sides had been locked in a faceoff along the same line except Demchok, an inhabited area. The 1959 Claim Line, he said, is a marvel of cartography to protect Aksai Chin and other areas seized by China in the 1950s. "If we attempt to get back those areas, Chinese can by the configuration of the 1959 claim line, close certain areas and usurp more of our territory. For example, at the North of Pangong Tso from where all our routes go to Hot Springs and Gogla, the distance from the northern edge of the Pangong Tso to the Konkala Pass (Hot Springs and Gogla area) is 100 kms. They have taken up the area up to Finger 4. So if they come another 30 to 40 kms forward and choke us, then this 100 kms will also go." "Similarly, the way they are poised in the DBO sector, no matter how many troops you put, that area is like a piece of cake. It will fall within 48 hours. The DBO airfield is within 10 kms of the 59 claim line, which is also the LAC there in the northern part of the DBO sector." The veteran defence analyst said that in the Southern part of Ladakh, India had crossed the 59 claim line and used to patrol. "But now they have stopped us from patrolling. So they have reached the 59 claim line and we are not in a position to vacate them militarily." Panag, whose defence analyses are read widely, a few months ago had claimed that by crossing the LAC, Chinese had gained everything and India lost everything. He had also predicted that India would lose the commanding heights of the Kailash range to China. "But I have revised my assessment now to say that the disengagement is the forerunner of a macro plan which may lead to an all-encompassing agreement where we accept the 59 claim line in Ladakh with buffer zones to save face and also a demilitarised zone of 20 kms." He said it was the most pragmatic solution for India to accept the '59 Claim Line with buffer zones. "Buffer zones in the Depsang plain, Pangong will not be patrolled or occupied and no infrastructure will be developed. So to that end, nothing has changed," Lt. Gen. Panag argued. However, buffer zones will be in the lower portion, the southern half of the Depsang plain, that is about 800 sq kms where Chinese have been patrolling, 20 kms east-west depth and 30-40 kms north-south. In Pangong Tso, its about 50-60 kms. "So overall, roughly 800 to 1,000 kms will become buffer zones. Also, buffer zones may come up in other areas where there is some small dispute like in Chumar," he said. This he said would be the first part of the plan and the rest of the plan will unravel in the next couple of weeks. The second part of the agreement, he said, will include a demilitarised zone of 20 kms on either side of the new LACï¿½1959 claim line. "This is what China had offered in 1959 and they will give up the Northeast," he said. At the same time, Gen. Panag, however said that the advantage goes to China because they have better infrastructure and they can quickly enter the area. "But then we can put some troops which can preempt it. Last year, we could not preempt it but that was our lapse. We were hesitant; we did not read the Chinese right." However, domestically, he said, there is no problem, he said with an element of sarcasm. "The government has already sold the idea that nothing much has happened and Modi Ji is very popular. The neo-nationalists have gone against their own creed (territory being important to the nation) and launched propaganda that nothing has happened. It has been done through denial, opacity, bluff, bluster and obfuscation." In the present situation, it is the best bet if it leads to peace for another 30 years, Panag said, arguing that tensions flared up between the two Asian giants 27 years after the last time they came to such an agreement in 1993. "If we had the capability, China would have never done this. It happened because they knew our weakness," he said. "If we get another 30 years, then we will be in a position to create the desired military capability, build up our economy, reduce the gap, not that we can catch up with China but to the extent between the US and China. There is still a huge gap between the US and China but China is no longer a pushover for the US. What China gains out of it is that if there is no quarrel left with India, New Delhi has no reason to ally with the US to contest China."
