But revellers who painted the town red and want more party time need not lose heart. Officially, the year has taken off on January 1, but the regional variants of the New Year’s Day still prevail in a country like India – home to a colourful mélange of cultures and traditions. So we are yet to experience a spate of <keyword id="471694" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="New-Year-festivities">New Year festivities</keyword>, celebrated from <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> to Kanyakumari, from the <keyword id="53478" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="North-East">north-east</keyword> to the western coast.<br />
 <br /> Interestingly, both the Gregorian calendar (introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582) and the previous <keyword id="89476" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Julian-calendar">Julian calendar</keyword> (first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 BC) kick off on the same day – January 1. The Romans originally dedicated the first day of the year to Janus, the god of gates, doors and beginnings, and January, the first month of the year, was named after him. Later on, most nations in Western Europe officially started the New Year from January 1. The UK was a late adopter, though, and observed New Year’s Day on <keyword id="47282" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="march">March</keyword> 25, popularly known as Lady Day since it celebrated Virgin Mary and the Feast of the Annunciation. This practice stayed in England up to 1752.<br />
 <br /> Closer home, we have many time-reckoning systems but the most significant among them is the <keyword id="1998432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sakabda">Sakabda</keyword> or the <keyword id="1998433" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saka-calendar">Saka calendar</keyword>. It was introduced in 78 AD, most probably by the Kushan ruler Kanishka, and was even used in other countries such as Kampuchea and Indonesia. Another one is the popular <keyword id="1998435" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bangabda">Bangabda</keyword> or the <keyword id="1282409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bengali-calendar">Bengali Calendar</keyword>, a <keyword id="1998436" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Solar-calendar">solar calendar</keyword> started by Mughal emperor <keyword id="6363995" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Akbar">Akbar</keyword> in 1584 AD. Then there is the <keyword id="1998437" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hijri-New-Year">Hijri New Year</keyword>, also known as the <keyword id="1926173" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Islamic-new-year">Islamic New Year</keyword>, which started in 610 AD when <keyword id="6358086" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prophet-Muhammad">Prophet Muhammad</keyword> migrated from Mecca to <keyword id="89362" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Medina">Medina</keyword>.<br />
 <br /> With so many calendars around and so many regional New Year’s Days to celebrate, it’s time to soak in the traditional rituals once more, mostly observed during the months of <keyword id="368788" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chaitra">Chaitra</keyword> and <keyword id="1998439" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Baishakh">Baishakh</keyword> (March-April). Each household prepares the ‘<keyword id="1998444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Holi-thali">holi thali</keyword>’ with great care, containing food, flower and other essentials, and it is viewed at the dawn of Navreh while family members pray for <keyword id="6383453" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wealth">wealth</keyword>, knowledge and <keyword id="23119" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="good-luck">good luck</keyword>. From this day, <keyword id="1998445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nav-Durga-Puja">Nav Durga Puja</keyword> or <keyword id="31525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Navratra">Navratra</keyword> also begins in Kashmir and continues for 9 days.<br />

<strong><keyword id="1296432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chaitti">Chaitti</keyword> – <keyword id="6358126" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword>: </strong>In this hill state, the New Year’s Day is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra according to the <keyword id="1998446" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vikrami-calendar">Vikrami calendar</keyword> and festivals such as <keyword id="48284" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="navratri">Navratri</keyword> and <keyword id="1998448" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ralli-Puja">Ralli Puja</keyword> are held throughout the month in honour of Goddess Durga/Bhagwati. The month-long Ralli Puja ends in the marriage of Lord Shiva and the goddess as spinsters seek blessings of the divine duo for a spouse like Lord Shiva.<br />

People of these southern states believe that Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe on this auspicious day. Houses are decorated with mango leaves and <em><keyword id="202308" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rangoli">rangoli</keyword></em> designs; Panchanga or the <keyword id="1998452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Religious-almanac">religious almanac</keyword> is recited and puja offerings are made for a prosperous New Year. Ugadi <em><keyword id="758269" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="pachadi">pachadi</keyword></em>, the traditional dish of six flavours made of <keyword id="6441002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="neem">neem</keyword>, <keyword id="137842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="jaggery">jaggery</keyword> &amp; banana, salt, green chilli/pepper, tamarind juice and unripe mango, is also relished on this occasion to acknowledge six different aspects of life.<br />

Houses are decked up with rangoli and colourful <em>gudhi</em> – a bright-hued, embellished silk banner tied to a decorated <keyword id="1808323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="bamboo-pole">bamboo pole</keyword> and an upside down brass/silver pot fitted on the top. Traditionally held on the first day of Baishakh (mid-April), a sweet drink called <keyword id="1998477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pana">Pana</keyword> is made using fruits, card, milk, water and sugar/jaggery and bestowed as <keyword id="1998478" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Puja-offering">puja offering</keyword>. People also drink Pana and water is offered to all, even to birds and animals, for a month. As in all other states, pujas are offered to ensure a prosperous year ahead; <keyword id="974604" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="festive-food">festive food</keyword> such as <em>pitha</em> and <em>laru</em> is made and shared, and young people get together to choose their life partners. In a video deposition about the case, officer Dustin Eberhardt recounted eight instances where he entered massage parlors with recording devices, paid in cash for massage services, then removed his boxers and initiated sexual contact with the women working there. </p><p>"So I had just put my hand on the back of her calf and then held it there and then she laughed about it. And then shortly after that, we did the rest of the stuff and then she had me roll over," Eberhardt said in a video deposition <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15 reported</a>.</p><p>In his filings about the interactions, <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15 reported,</a> Eberhardt on several occasions mentioned how when he "placed [his] hand on the back of the female's calf…[it] appeared to let them know I was okay to solicit sexual favors."</p><p>Eberhardt added that the initial encounters were confusing and he negotiated whether to remove his boxers with the massage employees. </p><p><strong>"</strong>I was like, 'Well, do you want me to take them off?' And so she was like, 'Well, your comfort – if you want them off or you don't want oil on them.' There was kind of some confusion on that, so I ended up taking them off because that's what I felt like the suggestion was from her," <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15 reported</a> Eberhardt said in a video deposition.</p><p>Once they were removed, he said the employees fondled his exposed genitals and he began discussing payment for the sex act. </p><p>"As soon as I got aroused, that's when I immediately started asking about the money and how much. And like I said, I've never done one of these, so I was fairly nervous and I didn't know where to stop it. So I was trying to stop it quickly."</p><p>Eberhardt did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.</p><p>A second police officer, identified as Officer Hutchinson by <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15</a>, returned to five of the same massage parlors Eberhardt did and did the same thing. </p><p>Such conduct by officers is specifically prohibited by state statute.  </p><p>"A peace officer commits unlawful sexual conduct by knowingly engaging in sexual contact, oral sexual contact or sexual intercourse with any person who is in the officer's custody or a person who the officer knows or has reason to know is the subject of an investigation," reads <a href="https://www.azleg.gov/ars/13/01412.htm#:~:text=A.,the%20subject%20of%20an%20investigation.">Arizona state statute 13-1412.</a></p><p>In emails exchanged with ABC15, Flagstaff Police Chief Dan Musselman defended his employees' actions, saying they did not violate the law because they did not touch the women. </p><p>"Quite the opposite happened," <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15 reported</a> Musselman said in an email. "The subject fondled Officer Eberhardt thereby making him the victim of Sexual Abuse under <u><a href="https://www.azleg.gov/ars/13/01404.htm">13-1404.</a></u>"</p><p>Musselman did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.</p><p>While no victims of sex trafficking were identified in the operation, 13 people were indicted on a mix of charges including conspiracy, money laundering, and operating a house of prostitution.</p><p>Operation High County Hydra is not the first time that the techniques of ICE and Arizona officers have been called into question during investigations into sex trafficking. One 2018 investigation, nicknamed "<a href="https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/homeland-secrets/agenttouch/">Operation Asian Touch</a>," had similar reports of <a href="https://www.havasunews.com/free_access/details-emerge-in-failed-arizona-sex-trafficking-case/article_0b905e98-22f0-11ea-828e-ff2824fed350.html">federal agents soliciting suspected trafficking victims</a> for sex acts. </p><p>"The sex act doesn't have to happen. So for me, this is a far overstep into abuse of power, and raises some really disturbing ethical issues," Jenna Panas, CEO of Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, told <a href="https://www.abc15.com/news/local-news/investigations/flagstaff-pd-officers-fully-naked-fondled-during-massage-investigation">ABC15</a>.</p><p>"You don't ask victims to give you sexual pleasure. That is not appropriate. These are folks who don't have power and control over their own lives, and do not have the ability to give consent…and our police solicited sex acts."</p>

Panasonic's CEO said the company may not make enough batteries for Tesla next year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I spent a day testing the updated <keyword id="88496" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche-Panamera">Porsche Panamera</keyword>, in Turbo S trim. It's the best Panamera I've ever driven.</li><li>My 2021 model year car had a 620-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 under the hood.</li><li>The interior combined sporty minimalist with effortless luxury — and some surprisingly decent cargo capacity.</li><li><keyword id="45673" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Porsche">Porsche</keyword> is absolutely killing it with all its redesigned and revamped models, so I shouldn't have been too shocked.</li></ul><p>I've never been what you might call a Porsche Panameraista. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-911-turbo-s-review-photos-features-verdict-2020-4">911-ista</a>, to be sure. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-cayenne-coupe-review-photos-features-verdict-2020-5">Cayenneista</a>, most definitely. More recently, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-718-spyder-review-photos-2020-7">even a Spyderista</a>. But the Panamera has always been my least favorite Porsche, taking a back seat to even the Macan SUV.</p><p>I'm especially ambivalent about the V8-powered Pana: I'd rather have the six-banger, which has always felt lighter in my hands. Still, I approached the 2021 Panamera Turbo S — the mightiest sedan in the Panamera lineup — with an open mind, when Porsche let me borrow a Euro-spec version of the updated four-door for a one-day evaluation. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2592" msid="78385821" hostid="261"></div><p>And dang-it if the car didn't have me within seconds. Three seconds, to be precise, which is all that was required for the Turbo S to blast from 0-60 mph. I was slightly north of that barrier in my testing, which you could chalk up to my laying off the throttle a tad. Floor it and Porsche says you'll post a 2.9-second run.</p><p>All is forgotten, Panamera Turbo S! This is a staggeringly good — nay, great — effort from Stuttgart. I can finally sign on to spending $180,000 (more or less where the car should be priced, before extras, when it goes on sales in the US early next year) for a big 'ole cruiser with the heart and soul of a supercar.</p><h2>The 2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S: 602-horsepower in a luxurious package</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2304" msid="78385824" hostid="261"></div><p>Porsche is revamping much of its lineup, so since last year I've been able to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-cayenne-coupe-turbo-gts-911-718-spyder-ranked-2020-7">drive more of the company's vehicles in a row than ever before</a> — ranging from the 911 Turbo S to the Panamera Turbo S — and can say the automaker is just flat-out killing it. Every car is the best it's ever been. The Panamera Turbo S was my first taste of a refresh to the second-generation of the lineup, and it tasted very, very good.</p><p>So what's new for 2021? Well, the Turbo trim has been eased out, with the Turbo S now sitting a notch below the Turbo S E-Hybrid, a plug-in that's forthcoming in Porsche's revamp of the model. The V8 engine is an improved, twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter mill that makes 620 horsepower with 604 pound-feet or torque and zowie! do you feel it.</p><p>"Crap, this thing is fast," I heard myself mutter whenever I punched it. I punched it often.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1495" width="1993" msid="78385827" hostid="261"></div><p>In fact, all you want to do with the Panamera Turbo S is punch it. Admittedly, the 550-horsepower Panamera Turbo that helped the car win our <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-panamera-is-business-insider-2017-car-of-the-year-2017-11">Business Insider Car of the Year award in 2017</a> was also addictively punchable. But I thought it was sort of over-muscled, as a sports sedan. Not so the Turbo S. The extra 70 ponies knocks a half-second off the 0-60 mph sprint and gives this car a savagely engaging quality. </p><p>The fastest Panamera once bugged me in a bad way. The new fastest Panamera now scares me in a good way.</p><h2>Yeah, but how does it look?</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2304" msid="78385830" hostid="261"></div><p>My tester car arrived wearing a <em>different</em> but compelling "Papaya Metallic" paint job, and after the immediate shock of seeing an orange Porsche in the driveway, I grooved on the color, especially when some late-September golden light of sunset hit the vehicle and made it glow like the Great Pumpkin.</p><p>All right, I doubt many customers are going to select the autumnal tone, but this close to Halloween, it struck me as appropriate. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1726" width="2301" msid="78385831" hostid="261"></div><p>The Panamera Turbo S's front end has been tweaked, but it still suffers from having to embrace the infamous Porsche bug-eyed headlamp design, even if the headlamps, with the quad-point running lights, are mad LED coolness. The back end is better than what we saw when the Panamera burst onto the scene a decade ago, but it's still a Panamera back end. </p><p>In short, well, you don't buy a Porsche because it looks great. And you certainly don't buy a Panamera for aesthetics. </p><h2>Better on the inside</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2592" msid="78385836" hostid="261"></div><p>My Turbo S came outfitted with simple black leather upholstery, but the simplicity was deceptive. The front seats were 18-way-adaptive units, heated and supple, complete with adjustable bolstering. The rears were equally well-crafted, with their own climate controls. Above them all was a dual-pane moonroof.</p><p>Glossy piano-black surfaces, carbon-fiber trim, and beautifully machined controls shared the space with a multifunction GT steering wheel, also heated, that featured a drive-mode controller with a boost mode that pulls out all the stops on the twin-turbos for short bursts of fury.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2592" msid="78385838" hostid="261"></div><p>The instrument cluster is an analog-digital rendering of the famous Porsche five-gauge setup, and for my tester, a Sport Chrono package brought a lovely stopwatch to the center of the dashboard.</p><p>So while I have all the predictable complaints about the Panamera Turbo S on the outside, when tucked into the cockpit, I become an enthusiast. One feels both incredibly purposeful at the wheel — It's time to drive! — and coddled by an interior of abundant, yet never excessive, luxury.</p><p>And you get nearly 17 cubic feet of cargo area under the hatch, so the Panamera provides some surprising versatility for a vehicle with supercar performance specs.</p><h2>Technology that's keeping up with the times</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1728" width="2304" msid="78385843" hostid="261"></div><p>Porsche's infotainment system is thoroughly familiar to me now, and it adds quite a bit to an interior experience. It's essentially the same system that's in other Porsche's I've tested. </p><p>Running off a large central touchscreen, it handles Bluetooth device pairing and USB connectivity, and the GPS navigation was reliable, although I barely used it. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1569" width="2092" msid="78385851" hostid="261"></div><p>My Turbo S came with an impressive 14-speaker, 710-watt Bose audio system that sounded superb. Bose setups handle a wide range of music, and the system in the Panamera produced a rich and, as you might expect loud listening experience.</p><h2>The Verdict: Ain't cheap, but if you have to ask ...</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1087" width="1450" msid="78385854" hostid="261"></div><p>I didn't have enough time to properly thrash the Panamera Turbo S, but I did drive it in a spirited manner, and let me tell you, for a potentially well-optioned $200,000 sticker price, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more exhilarating sedan. (And I was coming off an Audi S7 test that already had me agog over what the VW Group can do with a four-door.) </p><p>The Panamera Turbo S is just hypnotic: so fast in a straight line, so planted in the corners, so confidence-boosting coming out of them, with a blissfully smooth-shifting eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending succulent slabs of power from that roaring V8 to the absurdly capable all-wheel-drive system. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Panamera Turbo S" height="1444" width="1925" msid="78385859" hostid="261"></div><p>The extra horsepower over the V8 Panameras I'd previously driven made all the difference. Something special happens when you cross that 600 hp barrier. The car no longer felt bulky — the oomph made it light. But that was an illusion, because it was just the physics adding intensity, and with it the sense that I could ask more from the chassis and suspension.</p><p>Sometimes, a fine machine just leaves me without much to say. That's what happened with the 2021 Panamera Turbo S. <p>A new charity ad suggests that the only way to get people to pay attention to the poor is to insult them.</p>
<p>In something of an unorthodox move, the United Kingdom's Pilion Trust sent a man into a busy London street wearing a sign around his neck that said "F*** THE POOR," and filmed how people reacted.</p>

<p>The purpose of the ad doesn't become clear until about 45 seconds in, when the video shows what happens when the man returns to the street wearing a sign reading "HELP THE POOR."</p>
<p>Instead of stopping to insult the man, fellow Londoners merely walk by as if he isn't even there. At the end, the video fades to black and a written message that says "PLEASE CARE ENOUGH TO GIVE."</p>

<p>According to Pilion Trust's website, the charity provides basic services like food, temporary shelter, and counseling to homeless people in the London area.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://piliontrust.com/2014/04/07/fuck-the-poor/">a blog post</a>, Pilion Trust said it has recently endured government funding cuts of 60%, and made the ad as a means of reminding people they need to care enough to donate money in order to make a difference.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><br /></span></p>
<p>"We understand that some may be shocked by this footage," Pilion Trust chief executive Savvas Panas wrote. "We are more offended however, that people across the United Kingdom are living in adverse poverty."</p>
