Former president Donald Trump has said Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> will meet him next week during his upcoming three-day visit to the US. While the Republican presidential candidate slammed India as an "abuser" on the issue of import tariffs, he described Modi as a "fantastic man". PM Modi will be visiting the US from September 21 to 23. Speaking on Tuesday at his first public appearance following the recent apparent assassination attempt, Trump said Modi will meet him next week when he is in the US. "So when India, which is a very big abuser. He (Modi) happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he's fantastic. I mean, fantastic man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic," Trump said, reiterating that India imposes heavy tariffs on imports. The former president revealed the information as he spoke about trade and tariffs while responding to a question at a town hall meeting in Flint, Michigan. He went on to say, "These people are the sharpest people. They're not a little bit backwards...You know the expression, they're at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough. Brazil is very tough....China is the toughest of all, but we were taking care of China with the tariffs." "So we're going to do a reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents, if they charge us USD 2, if they charge us a hundred per cent, 250, we charge them the same thing. And what's going to happen? Everything's going to disappear, and we're going to end up having free trade again. And if it doesn't disappear, we're going to take in a lot of money," he said. Modi will begin his trip with the <keyword id="23214075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quad-Leaders-Summit" source="keywords">Quad Leaders' Summit</keyword> being hosted by President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. The summit will be attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan. Modi will then travel to New York and address a mega community event in Long Island on September 22. He will address world leaders at the landmark Summit of the Future event at the UN headquarters the next day. Modi's visit comes less than two months before the US heads into presidential elections with Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the top job. The US general elections will take place on November 5.

Musk didn't publicly share many details about the trip, but sources <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-musk-likely-unveil-2-3-bln-india-investment-during-visit-sources-say-2024-04-17/#:~:text=NEW%20DELHI%2C%20April%2017%20(Reuters,familiar%20with%20the%20discussions%20said.">told Reuters</a> he planned to announce a $2 to $3 billion investment in India. Musk wants to build a new factory in India, where the <keyword id="20623482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-market" source="keywords">EV market</keyword> is tiny but gaining steam, the outlet reported. The planned visit from Elon Musk coincided with the ongoing National Lok Sabha Elections in India. He confirmed on X that his visit would include a possible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after which it was expected that they would together announce Tesla's official entry to India. While this might have benefitted the ruling party amid the crucial elections, the opposition is now capitalising on the delay in Musk's visit. On Saturday, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh <a href="https://twitter.com/Jairam_Ramesh/status/1781641711111803382" data-type="tilCustomLink">wrote on X</a>, "It was odd that Elon Must was coming all the way to India to meet an outgoing Prime Minister. He too has now read the writing on the wall and decided to put off his visit. INDIA’s PM will welcome him soon, and the INDIA Government will promote electric vehicles even more aggressively - I myself am a user of one!" As the collapse of <keyword id="630197" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silicon-valley-bank" source="Orion">Silicon Valley Bank</keyword> (<keyword id="675965" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="svb" source="Orion">SVB</keyword>) in the US left the Indian startup ecosystem worried, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajeev-chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword>, on Sunday said he will hold a meeting with the startup Founders and CEOs next week to see how the government can help them during the crisis. The bank's collapse is going to impact several startups in India which have exposure to its investments and have parked their funds in the bank. "The @SVB_Financial closure is certainly disrupting startups across the world. Startups are an important part of #NewIndia Economy," Chandrasekhar said in a tweet. The minister said he will meet with the Indian startups next week "to understand the impact on them and how the Narendra Modi government can help them "during this crisis." According to recent data by global software-as-a-service (SaaS)-based market intelligence platform Tracxn, SVB had exposure in at least 21 startups in India although it did not reveal the size of the investment in these startups. Top venture capitalist (VC) firms have also issued a joint statement on the collapse of SVB, one of the largest US banks serving the global startup community, saying they are "deeply disappointing and concerning". According to reports, SVB was a bank to more than 2,500 venture capital firms, including Lightspeed, <keyword id="6581358" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bain-capital" source="Orion">Bain Capital</keyword> and Insight Partners. On Friday, the <keyword id="905063" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-deposit-insurance-corporation" source="Orion">US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation</keyword> (FDIC) took control of the SVB's $175 billion in customer deposits. US-based technology startup accelerator Y Combinator, which has invested in thousands of startups, including at least 200 from India, has written a petition to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and others, asking them to prevent further shockwaves that could lead to financial crisis and layoffs of more than 100,000 workers. Over 1,200 CEOs and founders representing over 56,000 employees have already signed the petition, written by Garry Tan, CEO and President of Y Combinator, to save startups and hundreds of thousands of jobs. <ul><li>A survey by the <keyword id="69007" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum">World Economic Forum</keyword> shows that <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>n senior executives believe policy in India to support technology is lagging.</li><li>India has great potential to be one of the world’s largest technology hubs thanks to its growing number of internet users. </li><li>However, government support needs to speed up to be the next <keyword id="6357722" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>.</li></ul>India has the world’s third largest startup ecosystem with over 560 million Internet users. Yet, the country is unable to re-create the success of Silicon Valley by creating massive technology hubs. According to a <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/10/india-technology-development-silicon-valley/">World Economic Forum blog</a>, it is due to lack of government support. As per a WEF survey, 83% of senior executives in the country believe that "policy-makers were behind the curve in terms of the laws they passed relating to technology and innovation”. The report however says that PM <keyword id="6387077" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi-government">Narendra Modi government</keyword>’s initiatives like Startup India, Make in India and Digital India are a step in the right direction. “Encouraging more foreign investment, offering tailored training programmes, making an effort to retain home-grown talent, as well as creating the right regulatory infrastructure are all vital to successful digital growth,” states the report. With or without support, Indian ecosystem is aiding the growth of startups. In 2019 alone, eight startups joined the unicorn club, taking the number of unicorns to over 30. In the first nine months of 2019, Indian startups have <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/startup-funding-jumps-25-amid-bubble-fear/articleshow/71415357.cms">raised</a> a whopping $10.5 billion. While Bengaluru already tops the list of world’s most dynamic cities, Delhi NCR too is growing to be a massive startup hub. A recent report done by TiE Delhi NCR states that the national capital region has over 7,000 startups. NCR is also home to 10 unicorns, adding one new unicorn every year since 2013.
