The Ministry of Labour and Employment recently directed the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (<keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords">EPFO</keyword>) to ensure the activation of UAN (<keyword id="20789489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="universal-account-number" source="keywords">Universal Account Number</keyword>) via Aadhar-based OTP. The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. Notably, Aadhaar-based verification eliminates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity. In the first stage, all employers must complete <keyword id="24089674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UAN-activation" source="keywords">UAN activation</keyword> through Aadhar-based OTP for all employees who've joined the company in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. Starting with their latest recruits, employers will have to finish this process for all their employees. As per the budget announcements, the government will implement 3 schemes for 'Employment Linked Incentive' as part of the Prime Minister's package. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. In September this year, EPFO added 18.81 lakh members, registering a 9.33% YoY growth.

EPFO to ensure UAN activation for employees through Aadhaar-based OTP

How to check Pf (Provident Fund) balance in India

Employees Provident Funds Universal Account Number (<keyword id="2407788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="UAN">UAN</keyword>), launched by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> in October last year, has been made mandatory for all employees covered under the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952, by an order notified by Retirement fund body <keyword id="6372438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO">EPFO</keyword> on Monday. The step was taken for availing of benefit of the scheme. "We have notified the draft order to make UAN compulsory for all organisations covered under the EPF &amp; MP Act," EPFO's <keyword id="6567698" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Central-Provident-Fund">Central Provident Fund</keyword> Commissioner K K Jalan told PTI. 

	The UAN remains portable throughout the lifetime of an employee and they don't have to apply for PF transfer claims at changing jobs. 
 

	It is even more beneficial for workers in the construction sector, who often change their contractor after short span of time and take up new jobs after fining one contract. 
 
 

	"The deadline for completing the formalities is August 25 after which action will be taken under the powers given to us by the Employees Provident Funds Scheme, 1952, and other applicable laws for failure to comply with the order," Jalan had said after meeting around 150 employers in Bengaluru last week as per media reports. 
 
 The Employees' <keyword id="122254" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Provident-Fund-Organisation">Provident Fund Organisation</keyword> (EPFO) had issued over four crore UANs to employers across the country in July last year. 

	These UANs were then provided to workers and the process of seeding these accounts with KYC details like PAN, Bank Account and Aadhaar started. 
 

	As on today, as many as 56.34 lakh workers have activated their portable PF account numbers. All subscribers have to activate their UAN themselves by logging into the account. 
 

	After the due process, as many as 2.8 crore UANs are ready for activation but these many account holders have not provided their bank account details as per the EPFO website. 
 

	According to information available, there are additional 1.71 crore UANs which were made ready for activation by subscribers who had provided banks accounts details. 
 

	The bank account details are necessary for using UAN for various claims including PF withdrawals. However, those subscribers who have UAN but not provided bank account details can activate their UAN and access it online.

UAN mandatory to avail benefit of the scheme

As the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court">Supreme Court</a> extended voluntary use of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=aadhar">Aadhaar</a> card to government schemes, the Employees' <keyword id="45028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Provident-Fund">Provident Fund</keyword> Organisation (<keyword id="6372438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPFO">EPFO</keyword>) is planning to launch online PF withdrawal facility by March end. 
 
With online facility, PF claims will be settled in three hours of receiving an application. 
 
"We have written to the Labour Ministry for approvals for starting an online PF withdrawal facility. We are hopeful of launching this by March end after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling," said Central Provident Fund Commissioner K K Jalan. 
 
"During this month, we will start settling all PF withdrawal claims having Aadhaar numbers within three days against the mandated period of 20 days though the claims will be filed manually only,” added Jalan. 
 EPFO has also become the registrar of the Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UIDAI">UIDAI</keyword>) for purpose of enrolment. 
 
But for the online facility, your Unique (portable PF) Account Numbers (UANs) should be seeded with Aadhaar numbers, including the bank account details. 
 
EPFO website claims that the authority has issued 5.6 crore <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UAN">UANs</a>, out of which 92.88 lakh subscribers have provided their Aadhaar numbers and 2.75 crore bank account details. 
 
EPFO has verified 64.67 lakh Aadhaar numbers and 1.9 crore banks accounts for seeding those with UANs. At present, there are 1.99 crore subscribers who have actually activated their UANs.

PF withdrawal to go online! Settlement will be within 3 hours

New Delhi, Mar 20 () The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) on Friday asked pensioners and employers to avoid visiting its offices and avail online services like raising claims for PF, view balance, and make payments etc from their homes. The step has been taken to curb the spread of deadly coronavirus, the EPFO said in a statement. To contain the spread of coronavirus, the EPFO advises members, pensioners and employers to avoid visiting EPFO offices and avail various online services offered by it from their homes, it said. Most of the services of the EPFO are available online, it mentioned. An employee can generate his/her own Universal Account Number (UAN), activate his/her UAN and seed it with Aadhaar, PAN, Bank Account and mobile number (KYC seeding), the EPFO said. "Employee can also make nominations, view balance in the passbook, update his/her date of exit, transfer his/her account from unexempted to exempted establishment and vice-versa. "Employees have been further empowered to raise claims online for the provident fund (PF) advances or final withdrawal, pension or insurance benefits and receive payment of PF/pension/insurance benefits directly in his/her bank account," the statement said. Similarly, a pensioner can download his/her pension payment order (PPO) or preserve it in Digilocker. He/she can know his PPO number with the help of his/her bank account number or UAN and view passbook. Pensioners can also update Jeevan Praman (Digital Life Certificate) online any time of the year. "Employers can register their establishments under EPF&amp;MP Act, 1952 and obtain establishment ID, make payment of EPF and allied dues through RTGS/NEFT and submit Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR). Employers have also been facilitated to avail e-inspections of their establishments," it said. In case of any grievance, the EPFO said employees, employers and pensioners can get them resolved online through EPFigms portal.
