Merchant payment and lending service provider <keyword id="7349800" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharatpe">BharatPe</keyword> on Thursday said it has acquired <keyword id="1917213" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PAYBACK-India">Payback India</keyword> from <keyword id="91294" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="American-Express">American Express</keyword> and ICICI Investments Strategic Fund. The company, however, did not disclose the financial details of the transaction. This is the first-ever acquisition by BharatPe and will make Payback <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> a wholly-owned subsidiary of BharatPe, a statement said. Payback India - launched in 2010 - is a multi-brand loyalty programme with over 100 million members in the country. It has a network of more than 100 offline and online partners and allows its customers to earn and redeem points on every transaction at its partner merchant outlets. The acquisition of Payback India is in line with BharatPe's strategy to build a robust and engaged network of over 20 million small merchants by 2023, the statement said. With Payback India, BharatPe will be able to enhance its value proposition for the merchant partners, it added. Additionally, it will enable BharatPe to build a lucrative set of offerings for end customers, that will enhance footfalls at merchants and accelerate the growth of their businesses. As a result of the acquisition, all Payback India employees will become part of the BharatPe group. Suhail Sameer and Gautam <keyword id="2220" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaushik">Kaushik</keyword> (Group Presidents at BharatPe) along with Sumeet Singh, General Counsel of BharatPe, have joined the Board of Payback India. The role of the senior leadership team at Payback India will be expanded to also work on the loyalty programme for the six-million plus merchants of BharatPe, it added. The team, led by Pramod Mahanta (MD Payback India) and Rijish Raghavan (Chief Executive Officer at Payback India), will be working closely with Gautam Kaushik to build a new version of Payback India. Notably, Kaushik was the CEO and MD of Payback India prior to joining BharatPe in February this year. The company (Payback India) will continue operating under its current name and there will be no impact on the existing customer and partner relationships with Payback India that will continue to roll out initiatives for customers across India, the statement noted. "With the acquisition of Payback India, we will be able to add a whole new dimension to our merchant value proposition. In addition to the range of payment and credit products which BharatPe offers to help merchants scale their business, we will also be able to drive more consumers to their stores," BharatPe co-founder and CEO Ashneer Grover said. He added that the company is committed to build India's largest and most engaged merchant network and this acquisition will be a "game-changer" in that regard. BharatPe at present provides a single interface for all existing UPI apps and allows merchants to accept UPI payments for free, through the BharatPe QR. It also supports merchants to access credit and other value-added services. Founded in 2018 by Ashneer Grover and Shashvat Nakrani, the company currently serves over 60 lakh merchants across 100 cities. It processes over 10 crore UPI transactions per month (annualised Transaction Processed Value of more than USD 10 billion) and facilitated disbursement of loans totaling to over Rs 1,600 crores to its merchants since launch. As a result, pure petrol powered cars may not figure in the company's portfolio of cars in a decade. Already the company has stopped rolling out diesel powered cars. <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> is also focusing on growing its sport utility vehicle portfolio and the market share in that segment. "Pure petrol powered cars may not be there in the company's product line up, say in 10 years time as the emission and fuel efficiency norms are getting tighter," Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director, Marketing &amp; Sales told IANS. He said the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy or Efficiency (CAFA per cent) norms may come into place in 2032. Unlike the norms for the tailpipe emissions, the CAFA% norms are for a carmaker's entire portfolio. More the fuel efficiency of a car, the less the tailpipe emissions. As there is a limit on achieving higher fuel efficiency with the current technology, companies are looking at alternatives. While electric vehicles are one option, it is not viable for the entire automotive segment in India in the short term owing to issues like availability of charging infrastructure, vehicle price and its payback period and others. The other option is rolling out vehicles powered by mixed fuel -- ethanol plus petrol, hybrid, flexible fuel, CNG and the like. Car racing games for PS4 in India

Remember the time when you might have moved cities for further studies? If your institute or college/university had a hostel with a vacant room for you, then you were one of the lucky ones. For most others, it has been a long, and often uncomfortable, saga of living as <keyword id="96046" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paying-Guests">paying guests</keyword> (<keyword id="6356386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PG">PG</keyword>) or sharing small apartments/dorms or both. Costs have been sky-high and the quality of places to rent and put in a decent few hours of study have rarely ever matched up. ‘Student living’, quite similar to a working professional renting an apartment in a big city, has been a sizable market for a while. The demand is always high and the supply...well. But for any market of this sort, sooner or later there will be people who recognise the need to organise it and optimise the opportunities. And as is with most unorganised sectors today, there are startups trying to change it. There are approximately 34 million students in higher education institutions and the unmet demand for student housing remains as high as <a href="http://www.jll.co.in/india/en-gb/Research/Student_Housing.pdf?92f28958-cb33-440c-9835-04cddda7728e">30% – 60%</a> across the top states. According to AS Sivaramakrishnan, the Vice President at Jones Lang LaSelle Incorporated, the student living market is expected to rise to <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/real-estate/student-housing-graduates-to-pampered-league/article9981882.ece">₹160-180 billion</a>, based on data on student loans, capacity shortage and parents’ growing willingness to spend. What was once a series of shoddy, semi-furnished, cheap homes, has now transformed to swanky urban service apartments for students. Companies like <keyword id="3844186" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="CoHo">CoHo</keyword>, <keyword id="6753430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="homigo">Homigo</keyword> and <keyword id="2366577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="zolo">Zolo</keyword> are moving towards a more “consumer-centric” approach and are trying to bring in facilities like gaming rooms, laundry services, WiFi, and even discount coupons for students looking for accomodation. The startups offer single, double and triple seater rooms and their prices range between ₹23,000 and ₹12,000 (excluding electricity), which is slightly higher than what student accommodations around universities like Delhi University (DU) cost right now. Of course, cheaper options are available, but living conditions in such accommodations have been <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/not-just-admission-du-students-also-race-for-rooms-on-rent/article19298616.ece">talked about aplenty</a>. The idea is to bridge the gap between what people want and what they get. The industry is less than five years old right now with most companies having begun operations around 2015-16. In fact, most companies are still battling it out in their home bases, but expansion is inevitable. Only Zolo, which started out in Bangalore, was able to move out to Pune, Chennai, Kota and Delhi-NCR. For instance, CoHo, which is based in Delhi, houses about 2,000 students. The CoHo residences are more than 45 in number and are mostly concentrated near DU’s North campus and Gurgaon region. They are clocking an annual revenue of more than ₹170 million ($2.5 Million) as of today. How does it all work? The companies lease residences on a long-term rental agreement with building owners, lasting between three to seven years. They redesign the residence before renting them out and students sign the agreement with these companies. They also have on-site staff, like wardens, housekeepers and security guards, for property management and are responsible for providing tenants with assisted living facilities. The revenue generated from tenants is shared with property owners on either fixed rental income or revenue sharing basis. Revenue sharing allows owners to take a certain percentage (30-45%) of the total generated each month, or they can also choose to get a fixed amount every month instead. The owners receive an increment of about 7-10% every year. “Leasing property out to these companies saves a lot of efforts and money. The companies redesign the property and take care of its maintenance, so I don’t have to run around. My income also doesn’t fluctuate as much now since I get a fixed amount of revenue irrespective of whether the room is rented out or not,” said Yesh Reddy, the owner of one of the Homigo properties. A whole new world Here’s the cool part, all of the founders are less than 30 years of age and have struggled while living in paying guest (PG) accomodations. Therefore, who better but these guys to figure out exactly what students need? “The focus of brokers and PG owners is only on money and not on the students’ lifestyles. Our experience with this difficulty is definitely a driving factor for us,” said Nikunj Batheja, the co-founder and CEO of Homigo. In terms of space design, the companies try to make the rooms thematic, fun, aesthetic and clean. A lot of these companies, like CoHo, have study halls, activity rooms and even gaming rooms. It is well lit, ventilated, clean and has an open kitchen that you can use. However, what’s lacking is that residents can’t redesign their rooms as per their wishes.” Muhammed, one of the residents, added. Though the furniture can be rearranged, sticking posters or putting up hooks and nails on the walls is totally off limit. That’s because the companies take up the whole property from the landlords and then essentially sublet them. So, though two people might be paying the same amount in the same flat, one might end up getting the raw end of that deal. Security and peripheral services Another major change in the industry is the use of technology to strengthen security in the residence, with biometric cards, facial recognition, CCTV, sensors etc (CoHo’s biometric security machine) The accommodations have further used technology to “make life easier”. They give students free Wi-Fi with a 24-hour backup service. There is also a facility to make online rental payments. CoHo also gives “CoHo credit” that is a payback as a way of incentivising tenants paying on time. Most of the companies have an app that helps students interact with them. The app lets you give ‘commands’ to the companies regarding housekeeping services. It can also be used for feedback and complaints, and keeps you updated about the progress in your residence, like upcoming social events and revised food menus. “It is sometimes way too systematic. So, if my friend comes over to stay at my place, I will have to register in advance with the app and even notify them if she’s going to be taking a meal. It gets chaotic,” says Khushi Agarwal, a student from Miranda, who has had first-hand experience of staying at these accommodations. <keyword id="3347984" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="co-living">Co-living</keyword> or community living is the most distinctive feature of the sector. The companies conduct different social events, like stand-up comedy, and connect all residences through internal messaging apps. In terms of hospitality, these companies take care of all the in-house repairs, laundry services, on-demand room cleaning and even concierge services, irrespective of the kind of accomodation in which a student is living. There is no extra charge for these services. The only real difference here is in the fact that these residencies are more expensive than your usual <keyword id="2630822" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="student-accommodation">student accommodation</keyword>. And given the shoestring budgets students usually live on, that could make for a big difference, as many told us. Both the students Business Insider spoke to, Khushi Agarwal and Arshad Mohammed, said you should try these only if you can afford them. The hassle of living in a PG, for the students, begins with the search. Students either look for a PG online or physically go out and roam about to find the suitable one. Otherwise, brokers take up a lot of money. Once a student finds a PG, the facilities provided to them are not very decent. Himanshi Baithla, living in Shakti Nagar, said she has shifted three PGs this year and is still not fully satisfied with her accommodations. Problems range from strict landlords, to bad food and curfew times. Though students can find PGs for as low as ₹4,000, the sacrifices are also considerable. So, essentially, it’s between the devil and the deep sea. While you get what you pay for, you cannot pin up that favourite poster. Alternately, you get better food and perhaps your laundry is taken care of. But at the end of the day, for students and their parents, it will come down to money. And in that scope, student living and the startups dealing with it, still have miles to go.

From PGs to co-living spaces: How student accommodation is changing in India

A foundational issue in the political economy is what is the role of the state? While protection and safety against aggression, both from external and internal, seem to be the legitimate and core principles behind the formation of states, public services like education and healthcare are often now conceived as being the responsibility of the state. But, what about transportation/ mobility?, is it the responsibility of the state or is it best left to private providers. This is a question that societies have been grappling with for quite sometime now. 
 
In India, the transportation model is mixed and (some would say mixed up) with the state ensuring the basic infrastructure like roads and railway tracks and even airports and ports in most cases. Services over these are provided by both government and the private sector. Two recent debates over transportation have made headlines but have rarely been understood from a holistic viewpoint. 
 
The first of these was the odd-even rule in the capital, brought to reduce the negative externality of air pollution. Many people have been very skeptical about how the plan is to get implemented. 
 
Also, the lack of end-to-end connectivity, women safety, and enforceability are cited as major challenges to the rule. Experts contend that the record of these types of rules has not been very positive in other countries that have had similar rules. In addition, several people opine that before making these rules, it is a must to improve the existing transportation infrastructure within the city and to have cheap and convenient public transport. Also, alternative solutions like increasing ethanol content can be effective at the same time causing lesser inconvenience to common people. 
 
Another problem is with respect to India's lack of solution-oriented approach to mobility options within a city. This is where the need is to look at integrated urban mobility solutions for people residing in cities. Often the initial part or the ending part becomes exorbitantly expensive for people who live away from public transport systems. This is where there is a need for improvement both in terms of cost and convenience. 
 
The second major thing which hit the headlines in the recent times was the metro rail project that is an inter-city project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A lot of debate has taken place regarding the cost dynamics of the proposed project that is estimated to cost close to Rs 70000 crore. If escalations are added, the project is expected to cost close to Rs 98000 crore. Out of these, Rs 70000 crore a bulk of the costs, i.e., Rs 50000 crore is expected to be civil costs that will go to Indian companies. 
 
The project is at an advanced stage with Japan agreeing to provide India with more than three-fourth of the loan at a concessional rate of 0.1 percent and moratorium period of 15 years and a payback period of 50 years. It is one of the best deals India has had regarding cost and time, even from Japan, which reflects the depth of the Indo-Japanese relationship. The train technology is second to none with respect to safety. It has not had a single causality in 50 years of operation. 
 
The crucial question to ask, therefore, is not if a high-speed technology is good or not but can India's existing rail infrastructure be upgraded to improve travel times? And if so, at what cost? Travel time improvement requires not just track up-gradation but also an improvement in capacity utilization. With already overburdened capacity on the rail network, is it possible to improve speed is a crucial question to ask and answer by rail authorities. And if it is not is it not wise to upgrade to better technology with proposed high-speed tracks? 
 
Over the next few decades, India must find solutions that are visionary but also pragmatic as more people live in urban and semi-urban areas. The travel times can drastically improve with newer technologies in rails and even in automobiles. But as a nation, we must look to find solutions that solve the pressing problems of our times like vehicular pollution, availability of public transport with public consultation and seeing if better alternative solutions exist. But once a decision is made Indians must all support it to take India ahead.

India just got its first electric bus

What if someone said you could collect the long forgotten Bank Royalty points, Corporate Reward points and e-Wallet cash, and splurge it on shopping, dining or that vacation you were planning? 
 
Woohoo lets you do just that. It’s an app that aggregates multiple payment options in a single platform for consumers to transact at various online and offline retail outlets. 
 
The company has currently partnered with 50+ brands. This lets a Woohoo user access 3000+ stores and portals. The list includes apparel and accessories stores like Allen Solly, Westside, Fastrack, Hidesign, Restaurant chains like Noodle Bar, Mani's Dum Biryani, or Entertainment and leisure outlets like PVR, Cleartrip and others. The brand has no mobile recharge partners as yet. 
 
You could choose to pay using mobile wallets like MobiKwik and Oxigen, Payback Loyalty points, Hifives reward points and many other available options. 
 
So what is the potential market for a product like Woohoo in a country not savvy enough to use wallet services extensively? 
 
“There is a lot of ongoing category creation. India has been leapfrogging the Western world in terms of consumers using their mobile phones for diverse purposes. Anybody who wants to shop or gift online or offline is a potential Woohoo user”, T P Pratap, Co-founder and CMO, of parent company Qwikcilver says. 
 
Can users combine two wallet accounts to pay for a single service, say a movie ticket? 
 
“You have an option to do that. A unique Woohoo code will be generated for each of the wallet accounts. The two can then be used at the movie theater for booking the ticket”, Pratap clarifies. 
 
Make no mistake; Woohoo is not where you book that movie seat or restaurant table or the nice stilettos you saw online. The app only generates a code that can be used as an alternative mode of payment in place of your credit/debit card. 
 
Does it bring more peace of mind to people fumbling to jump onto the Indian e-commerce wagon in fear of divulging sensitive credit/debit card information? 
 
“Consumers are already freer than a few years ago. This method of payment gives them the first step to get over their anxieties of electronic payments”, Pratap observes. 
 
So what’s the way forward for Woohoo? 
 
“There are more currencies coming up, and the option of using credit/debit card for gifting. We’re looking to have 15,000-20,000 brands including Amazon, Snapdeal and Café Coffee Day onboard over the next six months”, Pratap says. 
 
In a country that salivates for discounts and prides itself in striking a bargain, if you don’t mind your money being tied up in an online wallet, you can now spoil yourself with indulgences minus the guilt of blowing more cash.

A nine-second video clip from a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-43365800" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 documentary on Putin</a> was <a href="https://twitter.com/juliaioffe/status/1694422276895101125" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted on X</a>, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday. The post had been viewed over 190,000 times at press time."Does one need to be able to forgive?" the interviewer asked Putin."Yes, but not everything," Putin replied."What can't be forgiven?" the interviewer asked."Betrayal," Putin said. On Wednesday, the <a href="https://tass.com/emergencies/1664311" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russian state-run news agency TASS</a> reported that Prigozhin's name was on the passenger manifesto of a plane that crashed in the Tver region, just outside of Moscow. Wagner-affiliated social media channels have <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/russia/plane-carrying-wagner-owner-prigozhin-crashes-in-russia-all-aboard-killed-82d25f1e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> unspecified air-defense systems in Russia took out Prigozhin's plane. The cause of the crash remains unclear. Putin has previously been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-of-people-putin-is-suspected-of-assassinating-2016-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suspected of assassinating his rivals</a>. Last year, two critics of Putin's war on Ukraine died after falling from building windows. In September, Russian energy oligarch Ravil Maganov <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lukoil-oligarch-fell-fell-out-of-window-died-state-2022-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">died after falling out of a window at a Moscow hospital</a>.
