Issues related to crypto assets require immediate attention and the response of the G20 has to ensure that they do not lose any potential benefits while protecting economies from harm, Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> has said. <keyword id="679937" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sitharaman" source="Orion">Sitharaman</keyword> was part of a brainstorming session on "Macrofinancial Implications of Crypto Assets" with G20 finance ministers and central bank governors at the IMF's headquarters here on Friday. India currently holds the rotating annual presidency of G20 countries. Issues related to crypto have emerged as a major point of discussion among G20 countries and there is unanimity among member nations about the urgency to regulate this sector. The brainstorming session was attended by global experts on this issue. In her remarks, Sitharaman said the G20 acknowledges the work of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the <keyword id="112428" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="financial-stability-board" source="Orion">Financial Stability Board</keyword> (FSB) in bringing out key elements of policy and regulatory framework. She also said a synthesis paper, which would integrate macroeconomic and regulatory perspectives of crypto assets, is required. The minister noted that there was consensus among G20 members to have a globally coordinated policy response on crypto assets that takes into consideration the full range of risks, including those specific to emerging markets and developing economies. Earlier this week, Sitharaman had said that India's G20 Presidency aims to develop a common framework for all countries to deal with risks associated with cryptocurrencies in the wake of the recent shocks witnessed in the crypto market. The last year episode of FTX's bankruptcy, and its spat with Binance triggered a huge sell-off in the market and reduced liquidity. This event made the world realise the vulnerability of this asset class as they do not have any underlying value. "Cryptocurrencies are a very important part of the discussion under the #G20India presidency, given so many collapses and shocks in cryptocurrencies. We seek to develop a common framework for all countries to deal with this matter," she had said at a discussion at Peterson Institute for International Economics here. According to the chair's summary released at the end of the two-day meeting of the first Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) held in February, the grouping will be looking forward to the IMF-FSB Synthesis Paper on crypto assets. "I am glad to say one thing: there is almost a clear understanding that anything outside the central bank is not a currency. And this is a position that India has been taking for a very long time and we are glad that such a position of India is now also getting acknowledgement from so many different members. People recognise that the technology is very useful for fintech," she had said after the conclusion of FMCBG. Further, in July, the FSB's paper on crypto assets regulation will be tabled so that it could be discussed at the next meeting of the finance ministers and central bank governors. The International Monetary Fund-Financial Stability Board (IMF-FSB) synthesis paper will be submitted in September, she added. Despite the rapid evolution of the crypto universe, there is no comprehensive global policy framework for crypto assets. Given the concerns over greater interconnectedness between crypto assets and the traditional financial sector as well as the complexity and volatility around crypto assets, policymakers are calling for tighter regulation. The global standard-setting bodies, such as the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Financial Stability Board (FSB), Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI), International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), have been coordinating the regulatory agenda while working within their respective institutional mandates. India hopes to broaden the G20 discussion on crypto assets beyond financial integrity concerns and capture the macroeconomic implications and widespread crypto adoption in the economy. This will require a data-based and informed approach to the global challenges and opportunities of crypto assets, allowing G20 members to shape a coordinated and comprehensive policy response. Crypto issue requires immediate attention, says FM Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Thursday said that there was a greater acceptance among Group of 20 (G20) member countries that any new regulations on the crypto assets need to be globally coordinated. "I am glad to say that there is a greater acceptance among all G20 members, that any action on crypto assets will have to be global. "the G20, I think, has responded fairly with alacrity (on the crypto challenge)," Sitharaman told reporters at a news conference after a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors. "The G20 and its members agree that it's not going to be possible to have an independent, standalone country dealing with the crypto assets," the minister added. Sitharaman told reporters that the group has willingly responded to the issue. A "synthesis paper" would be taken up on matters related to crypto assets during India's G20 presidency. India has maintained it wants a collective global effort to deal with problems posed by cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, and the finance ministry back in February said it had held a seminar for G20 member states to discuss how to come up with a common framework. Earlier in February, Sitharaman had said, "We are going through the study process so that there can be informed discussion. International Monetary Fund (IMF) and also the Financial Stability Board (FSB) have been doing their own little work on the crypto matter and progressing on their own. We've now asked them to do the papers and give it to us and the rapidity with which these papers have been already from IMF given and from FSB which will be given in time for the July meeting. I feel that we are progressing in this direction. So something should develop." She made the remarks while responding to a question regarding a consensus among the G20 nations on crypto assets during India's Presidency. "Recognising the risks attached to the private virtual assets, G20 nations moved a step closer to developing a coordinated and comprehensive policy approach to deal with the crypto assets by considering macroeconomic and regulatory perspectives," she said. The Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has for several years debated drafting a law to regulate or even ban cryptocurrencies but has not made a final decision. The Reserve Bank of India has said that cryptocurrencies should be banned as they are akin to a Ponzi scheme. Any action on crypto assets will have to be global: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

"Deeply concerning that #India has blocked the flow of information to Indian Twitter by withholding access to the following official accounts," Geo News quoted the Ministry as saying in a tweet on Monday night, while listing down the banned accounts. The banned accounts include accounts of the Pakistani Embassy in UN, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. "Diminishing space for plurality of voices &amp; access to info in India is extremely alarming," the tweet added. The Ministry called out Twitter, saying that social media platforms should abide by the applicable international norms. It said that the government of Pakistan is urging the tech company to restore access to the restricted accounts immediately and ensure adherence to democratic freedoms of speech and expression. Meanwhile, the Twitter handles of journalists, including The News and Geo News reporter in London, <keyword id="14309060" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="murtaza-ali-shah" source="Orion">Murtaza Ali Shah</keyword> and CJ Werleman have also been withheld by the company under India's Information Technology Act, 2000, Geo News reported. Murtaza Ali Shah has around 550,000 followers on his verified Twitter @MurtazaViews account. He has been associated with The News and Geo for more than 17 years. Shah confirmed he received an email notice from Twitter about India's legal action against his account. Twitter India bans accounts of Pakistan embassies in UN, Iran, Egypt and Turkey

Under the City Taxi Scheme 2017, cabs are only allowed to pick up and drop passengers from one point to the next. Even if individuals choose to pay more and opt for solo rides, the increased congestion on the road with more people using individual cars, will add to the time opportunity cost. That’s double the amount in Dakar, the second city on the list. The effect on the companies themselves is a different story. Recent reports <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/uber-ola-enter-slow-lane-in-2018/articleshow/65927443.cms">indicate</a> that while the absolute number of rides have been increasing, the companies are now growing at a slower rate. Experts believe that one of the reasons is the focus on ride-sharing. The ban could either be good for the companies if customers shift to solo rides. Or, bad if customers choose to shift to public transport altogether or find other alternative means of transportation. Other issues on the table In reviewing the regulations for cabs in the Indian national capital, the committee is also discussing the issue of green fuels and permits. Possible outcomes include enforcing that cabs only use fuels like CNG or LPG and providing proof of parking before applying for a permit. The biggest development to come is probably the tracking of cabs. Currently, cabs in the city aren’t monitored as they pick up and drop passengers. But the committee is considering adding GPS monitoring to the roster, not only for cabs in Delhi but for cabs that are registered in other states while operating within the city. For actual customers, the issues of greater relevance are the ‘panic’ button that will soon become a mandatory feature in cabs and putting a cap on the maximum fare that companies can charge from customers. If the scheme also goes through with its plan of limiting the number of cabs that can be put on call by a cab operator, the demand-supply disparity might even increase the overall prices in the market. The committee, that includes the transport minister Kailash Gahlot and Satyender Jain, a minister at the Public Works Department, is currently reviewing the City Taxi Scheme 2017, Licensing and Regulation of App-based Cab Aggregator Rules 2017 and app-based premium bus services. Sources have told Times of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> that this the committee is unlikely to rule in the favour of companies being allowed to operate ride-sharing in Delhi. They were originally supposed to come to a decision on Monday, but that has now be deferred to a date that is yet to be decided.

If Delhi has the worst air quality, why are paid carpool rides under the danger of getting banned?

In a setback to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola+cabs">Ola cabs</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+high+court">Delhi High Court</a> dismissed its plea challenging a single-judge order upholding <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi+government">Delhi government</a>'s ban on such taxi services. 
 
"Appeal dismissed," a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said. 
 
On July 29, single-judge, in his interim order, had directed Delhi government's transport department and traffic police to "strictly enforce" the January 1 ban. 
 
The single-judge also sought an undertaking from ANI Technologies, which operates under the brand name of Ola that it will comply with the court's order. 
 
On August 4, the division bench had reserved its order after hearing arguments on Ola's plea. Ola accused single-judge of overlooking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=supreme+court">Supreme Court</a>'s orders on the kind of taxis that can run on city's roads. 
 
Ola had argued that other non-app based taxi organisations come under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=radio+taxi+scheme">Radio Taxi Scheme</a> and Ola does not own the vehicles that run under their brand and only connects the taxis with customers. 
 
The company released an official statement stating, "We respect the Honorable Divisional Bench's order on commercial diesel vehicles on all aggregator platforms in the state of New Delhi, as well as on those plying independently. We are working closely with the authorities to help and support the thousands of driver entrepreneurs and lakhs of citizens in the state, who use the Ola app." 
 
The Delhi government had said the All India Tourist Permit (AITP) vehicles that operate under Ola brand are meant for tourist destinations and not point-to-point service in city. 
 
In this regard, the single-judge admonished Ola for not complying with the ban imposed on it by Delhi government on January 01 this year and refused to grant it any interim relief. 
 
The single-judge had refused to provide any relief to Ola. 
 
The court had earlier questioned how Ola was operating in Delhi when the city government's order banning them had not been stayed and warned of a shutdown if it thought it was above the law.

Koo also raised $4.1 million as part of its Series A funding recently from 3one4 Capital, Accel Partners, Kalaari Capital, Blume Ventures and Dream Incubator. While the valuation of the company, remains undisclosed, Bidawatka said they found the right set of investors who believe in their product, even if it's just 10-month old. And as users keep pouring into Koo, the 40-member team is on overdrive to keep things running. Even while there are teething issues, like every small company has. “We are dealing with the scale that has been thrown at us,” he said. It’s good news for <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> riders. App only taxi operator Ola has won a legal reprieve to operate in New Delhi. Rival <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> too has filed a similar suit to challenge the <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword>’s ban in the city. 
	 
	According to an ET report, the transport authorities in the national capital had started penalizing cabs that were operating under Ola and Uber after the Delhi government issued ban orders imposed in December. The ban was issued after a 25 year old woman accused Uber driver of rape. 
	 It should be noted that the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> asserted that the government's ban was not valid and could not be the sole basis to reject the taxi operators’ application to operate its taxis in the city. 
	 
	The court also directed the transport authorities to provide Ola with all details required for a licence within 10 days. Uber too has followed suit.
