From Nissan Magnite to Hyundai Exter – Most affordable automatic SUVs in India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nissan's first electric vehicle since the Leaf hatchback has arrived. </li><li>The Ariya SUV is stylish, capable, and has a few tricks up its sleeve. </li></ul><p>Long before Tesla became a household name, Nissan was the electric-vehicle pioneer making headlines.</p><p>It <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-leaf-revew-cheapest-affordable-electric-car-in-us-2021-10">released the Leaf</a>, a vaguely egg-shaped hatchback with 73 miles of range, way back in 2010, when Tesla was still a tiny startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-roadster-prices-increasing-sales-collectors-items-2022-10">making electric sports cars with borrowed chassis</a>. The products that propelled Tesla to worldwide success were all years away. </p><p>Twitter was in its infancy. Elon Musk was a mere hundred millionaire. It was a simpler time.</p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138760" hostid="261"></div><p>Despite the Leaf's success and some improvements over the years, more than a decade without a new electric model has left the one-time trailblazer lagging behind in the EV race. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-ariya-price-debut-specs-electric-crossover-suv-ev-leaf-2020-7">2023 Ariya SUV is Nissan's next act</a>. </p><p>Delivering loads more comfort, style, and capability than the aging Leaf, the Ariya proves that even after a hiatus Nissan is ready to go toe-to-toe with today's top EVs. </p><h2><strong>The basics</strong></h2><h2><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138762" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>The Ariya landed in the US earlier this year with a starting retail price of $43,190. There are several trims to choose from, two battery sizes, and a hard-to-pronounce all-wheel-drive option called "e-4ORCE." </p><p>Nissan lent me a front-wheel-drive Ariya Empower+, which came out to $59,495, including a destination fee and some fancy extras like carpeted floor mats, a $350 two-tone paint job, and eye-catching wheels for $1,900. </p><p>Its biggest rivals are other compact electric SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volkswagen ID.4, all of which have been around for years. </p><h2><strong>What stands out: A comfy interior, good range, and straightforward controls</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138763" hostid="261"></div><p>There's a lot to like about the Ariya, even if it isn't the flashiest or most cutting-edge EV out there.</p><p>It's spacious, good-looking, has decent driving range, and is easy to get the hang of — in contrast to some more techy competitors. (Looking at you and your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-y-electric-suv-flaws-cons-2022-9">touchscreen-operated windshield wipers, Tesla.</a>)</p><p>Without a gas engine taking up valuable real estate, EVs can offer lots more packaging flexibility than gas vehicles, which Nissan took full advantage of here. As a result, the Ariya affords a surprising amount of room to stretch out in front and in back. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138765" hostid="261"></div><p>There's no bulky tunnel running down the middle of the vehicle. Rather, there's a wide-open space by the driver's right knee, which lends a sense of openness you don't get in every EV. Plus my test car's wood trim, stylish leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and champagne-colored accents gave it an upscale feel and helped justify the $60,000 price tag. </p><p>My tester had the optional adjustable center console, which electronically scoots forward and backward using buttons facing the driver. It's a bit gimmicky, but it can help maximize space up front and put the gear shifter in just the right spot. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138766" hostid="261"></div><p>The quirks don't stop there. The open/close buttons on the center console offer access to a secret compartment that electronically unfurls from underneath the dashboard. </p><p>The main touchscreen is crisp and responsive to taps, but nothing special. The digital gauge cluster facing the driver is straightforward, easily customizable, and doesn't bombard you with too much information, which I appreciated. And the Ariya manages to provide a clean, minimalist aesthetic without getting rid of every single button. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138768" hostid="261"></div><p>Below the touchscreen and on the center console you'll find capacitive switches (the kind you tap rather than click) embedded elegantly into the wood trim. The persistent problem with these types of buttons is they're often too small and subtle to find at a glance while driving.</p><p>Nissan solves this issue by supersizing them. It's kind of like an EV for kindergartners, or the elderly. </p><h2><strong>What it's like to drive</strong></h2><p>The Ariya drives a lot like other mainstream EVs in that it's smooth and nearly silent. It's got a <em>little</em> kick for tight highway merges, but its 238 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque don't leave much to write home about. The all-wheel-drive version, which adds a second motor, should have a bit more pep in its step. </p><p>Range is a high point. The model I sampled is <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&amp;id=46013&amp;id=46014&amp;id=46015">EPA-rated for a robust 289 miles</a>, and the Venture+ version returns 304 miles for just over $47,000. It's a no-brainer to get that one rather than the base model, which promises a mere 216 miles. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1735" width="2500" msid="100138769" hostid="261"></div><p>Long road trips will be easy as cake thanks to Nissan's wonderful ProPilot 2.0 system, which uses an array of sensors to accelerate, steer, brake, and even change lanes for you on the highway.  Moreover, it allows for hands-free driving on stretches of road that Nissan has mapped out and changes lanes for you. I found it relieved some of the monotony of bumper-to-bumper New York traffic. </p><p>Just like in Ford and GM's similarly-equipped vehicles, a driver-monitoring camera mounted to the steering column watches to make sure you don't start scrolling Instagram while ProPilot 2.0 is active. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="1667" width="2500" msid="100138770" hostid="261"></div><p>Hands-free driving isn't available across the board, but Nissan doesn't skimp on standard safety features. The base Ariya comes equipped with lane-keeping, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. </p><h2><strong>What falls short: Some of the things people love about EVs</strong></h2><p>I'll keep this section short, because I really enjoyed the Ariya overall. But buyers might miss some of the things people love about electric cars, like a sprawling, feature-packed touchscreen, super-quick acceleration, and a front trunk. The Ariya doesn't offer one-pedal driving, a popular feature that lets drivers come to a stop by simply lifting their foot off of the accelerator. </p><div type="image" title="The 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+" height="3300" width="2200" msid="100138771" hostid="261"></div><p>Nissan says the Ariya can charge from 20%-80% in 40 minutes using a sufficiently powerful fast charger. That's not too shabby. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-y-kia-ev6-hyundai-ioniq-5-best-evs-2023-1">the best offerings from Hyundai and Kia</a> can do 10%-80% in just 18 minutes. </p><h2><strong>Don't call it a comeback</strong></h2><p>The Ariya is a little late to the party. But its stylish looks, no-fuss operation, and solid range make it an appealing and approachable choice in the growing EV market. </p>

Nissan India expands dealership and service station network ahead of Magnite launch next month

It felt like a big car squished into a little body, doomed to look squatty and angry until some new designer came along and gave it a makeover.</p><p>But when a 2021 Hyundai Venue Denim recently showed up at my door for a two-week test drive, I realized maybe the Denim wasn't the ugly one. My attitude was.</p><h2><strong>The 2021 Venue: Big value in a tiny package </strong></h2><p>Hyundai <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/2755">debuted</a> the $18,750 Venue at the 2019 New York Auto Show as the smallest member of its crossover-SUV lineup, offering buyers a step down from the $20,950 Kona in price and size.</p><div type="image" title="A comparison photo of the Hyundai Venue and Hyundai Kona compact SUVs." height="648" width="2052" msid="86069232" hostid="261"></div><p>It's obvious why Hyundai added the Venue to its lineup: Crossovers and SUVs are <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/gas-guzzling-suvs-trucks-funding-automakers-electric-future/story?id=78029132">dominating the American car market</a> right now, with new-car buyers abandoning sedans and "small cars" for ones that ride higher and provide (or provide the illusion of) more space. The Venue is a way for Hyundai to reach buyers who don't want the traditional "small car" but only have a small-car budget to spend.</p><p>The best way to describe the Venue Denim is with the question everyone asked me when they saw it: "It's kind of like a big Mini Cooper, isn't it?" </p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2413" width="3985" msid="86069234" hostid="261"></div><p>The <a href="https://www.edmunds.com/hyundai/venue/2021/st-401867734/features-specs/">Denim</a> is 10 inches shorter than Mini's biggest model, the <a href="https://www.edmunds.com/mini/countryman/2020/features-specs/">Countryman</a>, and echoes it from the outside - largely due to its shape and two-tone paint job. The Denim is the only Venue model currently offered with two-tone paint, and its blue body paired with a white roof scream, "I'm small and cute, and hey, so what if it looks like my designers copied off of Mini's homework and changed it just enough that the teacher wouldn't notice?" </p><p>But the Venue is on a tighter budget than <a href="https://www.miniusa.com/build-your-own.html#/series">any new Mini models</a>. Its prices run at such:</p><ul><li><strong>Hyundai Venue SE ($18,750):</strong> comes with <a href="https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/build/summary/#/40801C0S0N0">15-inch wheels</a>, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and a driver-attention warning.</li><li><strong>Hyundai Venue SEL ($19,800):</strong> adds 17-inch wheels, blind-spot collision warning, and rear cross-traffic collision warning. </li><li><strong>Hyundai Venue Denim ($22,050):</strong> adds LED headlights as well as "Denim" appearance package with blue body, white roof, and blue interior.</li></ul><p>Every version of the Venue comes with a 121-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and a <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31517125/cvt-transmission-vs-automatic-quick-guide/">continuously variable transmission</a>. Most car buyers won't notice the difference between a CVT and a regular automatic transmission, so don't stress over the words too much if you didn't know what they meant before reading this.</p><p>With $155 carpeted floor mats and fees, our Venue Denim came to $23,390.</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="3980" width="2980" msid="86069236" hostid="261"></div><p>The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2021/HYUNDAI/VENUE/SUV/FWD">gave the 2021 Venue</a> four out of five stars on three of its tests: overall, frontal crash, and rollover. In the final test, side crash, the Venue got five out of five. The 2021 Venue also won the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's second-highest safety award, <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/hyundai/venue-4-door-suv/2021">receiving its highest ratings</a> in every crash test.</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2372" width="4004" msid="86069239" hostid="261"></div><p>Where it struggled was in headlight quality. The LED headlights on the $22,050 Denim trim and the Venue SEL with the optional Premium Package - a base price, together, of $22,150 - received the IIHS' second-highest of four safety ratings, while all other Venue models got its second-lowest.</p><p>More details about those ratings and the Venue's headlight visibility concerns can be found <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/hyundai/venue-4-door-suv/2021#headlights">here</a>.</p><h2><strong>What stands out: Funky design, affordable practicality</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2665" width="3998" msid="86069241" hostid="261"></div><p>The Hyundai Venue Denim is perfectly packaged. Not a thing feels overlooked or out of place.</p><p>Open the doors of the Denim's two-tone exterior and almost everything inside is blue. Blue seats. Blue wheel. Blue dashboard. Blue doors. Blue parking brake. Blue, blue, blue. </p><p>Woven in are bits of silver and light gray, both to break up the blue and to accent the Denim's light-gray headliner - a common feature of economy cars, while more expensive ones often match the headliner to the color of the interior. Light-gray headliners can scream "cheap" if the rest of the interior is, say, entirely black, but weaving gray into the design can offset that completely. </p><div type="image" title="hyundai kona headliner" height="652" width="1956" msid="86069245" hostid="261"></div><p>But Hyundai didn't stop at funky colors. The seats have a cute zig-zagged pattern, the infotainment system displays radio channel numbers like they're vintage lightbulbs, the grayish-white contrast stitching guides your eye throughout the car - everything inside the Denim feels like it was put there or designed like that for a reason.</p><p>At $22,000, the Venue Denim is half the price of <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-is-now-the-average-price-of-a-new-car-11613683827">the average new car</a>. It might not be a $15,000 new car, but it's pretty close to the bottom of the market. </p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2456" width="3981" msid="86069247" hostid="261"></div><p>Yet it doesn't feel thrown together, or like an ultra-economy car whose features get ripped out or tacked on depending on price (see the Nissan Kicks, which has an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-kicks-review-2020-juke-sv-price-photos-specs-sr-2020-5#-5">optional center armrest</a> - without it, there's just a gaping hole between the front seats).</p><p>Don't read this thinking the Denim is a Cadillac Escalade, though. It's not. If you knock or tap on all of the materials, they'll feel cheap and plasticky.</p><p>It's a cheap car! That's expected. But the Denim is so cute you won't want to do that, because honestly, it doesn't matter that much anyway.</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2376" width="3986" msid="86069249" hostid="261"></div><p>Even I, a newfound Hyundai Venue fangirl, didn't realize just how beautiful the Denim's exterior paint was until I pulled it into a gas station on a stormy Saturday night. Stepping out and seeing it under those blazing lights at the gas pump - some of the only lights around given that it was 1:30 a.m. and everything else was closed - I realized its dark-blue paint glows. It's deep. It made me feel something.</p><p>I, unfortunately, also felt a deep desire to run in and use the restroom, so I didn't think to grab a photo. Just take my word for it.</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="3992" width="2661" msid="86069253" hostid="261"></div><p>The Venue is a great road-trip car for the price. There's a slight amount of wind noise and on rough patches, you can hear the road noise over a modest radio volume. But it's more like white noise in the background instead of an invasive, grating soundtrack to your ears. </p><p>The Venue also doesn't ride on cloud-like suspension, and you wouldn't expect it to at the price. You can feel the road beneath you, but it's perfectly comfortable for around-town driving or long stretches of highway. </p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2679" width="3983" msid="86069255" hostid="261"></div><p>Add front seat heaters (sorry, folks in the back), decent headroom in the rear because the car's roof doesn't slope backward, and an easy-to-work infotainment system, and no one has much to complain about in the Venue. </p><h2><strong>What falls short: Slow to get up to speed, quick to fill up with cargo</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2476" width="4011" msid="86069258" hostid="261"></div><p>Look hard enough, though, and you can find some stuff to pick on. </p><p>The Venue Denim's start-stop button feels like a plastic bottle cap. It doesn't have a sunroof or moonroof. There are no vents or seat heaters in the back, let alone any kind of climate control. Back-seat passengers don't get an armrest. Plus, the Venue arrived with a big stain on its light-gray headliner, so maybe try not to throw coffee on it or something.</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2148" width="3981" msid="86069260" hostid="261"></div><p>Another major dirt trap in the Venue is its infotainment system, complete with a shiny touchscreen and a piano-black border. The button controls in the Venue allowed me to avoid riddling the touchscreen with fingerprints unless I was putting something in the navigation, but that didn't stop an entire layer of dust and grime from building up anyway. </p><p>The good thing is that while many new cars slap shiny piano-black trim - <a href="https://mobile.twitter.com/alanisnking/status/1431295912773574666">perhaps the biggest grime magnet humanity has ever created</a> - on every square inch available, the Venue doesn't. It's free of piano black outside of the infotainment screen and a couple of buttons, and that's a good thing. </p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2271" width="4016" msid="86069262" hostid="261"></div><p>While the Venue might be a small car trying to mimic a big car, it's still a small car. Where that shows the most is in its cargo space.</p><p>Open up the back and you'll find a tiny cargo area, but I guess that's a tradeoff you have to make if you want five seats and a car small enough to squeeze into the last little strip of street parking (which the Venue is very good at).</p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="3404" width="2581" msid="86069265" hostid="261"></div><p>And although no one's buying a $22,000 Venue to take to the drag strip, its 121-horsepower engine is both painfully slow and sounds like it's in pain while trying to get up to speed. Step on the gas and you're suddenly reminded of that guy at the gym, lifting too much weight for his own good and grunting louder than a tornado siren.</p><h2><strong>Our impressions: The perfect package for the perfect price</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="2456" width="3981" msid="86069247" hostid="261"></div><p>I didn't get off to a great start with the Hyundai Venue, and that was my fault. As soon as I saw it in person, I knew I was wrong - and that I'd be proven even more wrong the longer I spent with the car. </p><p>In my two weeks with the Denim, it went from ugly duckling to the car equivalent of a Russell Stover heart-shaped box.</p><p>Both are, generally, one of your least expensive options for the occasion (buying a new car, Valentine's Day), and there's a reason why people default to the heart-shaped box: It comes in a nice, clean, festive package. It's cute. Nobody cares that you only spent $10, because for the same price as a few candy bars, you got something that really cares about making a good impression. </p><div type="image" title="The blue Hyundai Venue Denim outside an orange brick building." height="3984" width="2561" msid="86069268" hostid="261"></div><p>That's what the Denim teaches you: It isn't about price, it's about presentation. It's also about giving a car the benefit of the doubt, because you're never going to know how you feel until you see and drive it for yourself.</p><p>I'll work on that next time.</p>

Review: The $23,000 Hyundai Venue Denim compact SUV is an absolute steal for the price

New Delhi, Jan 27 () Japanese automaker Nissan plans to launch one new product every year, starting with a compact SUV, as part of its revised strategy for a turnaround in the Indian market, a top company official said on Monday.
<p> The company, which has so far failed to make an impact in the market, now plans to focus primarily on the Nissan brand in the country and introduce multiple products with different body styles, including SUVs and sedans, going ahead instead of depending only on its SUV lineage as part of an earlier plan announced in 2018.
</p><p> It will also continue with Datsun brand, with focus on providing value proposition to the customers.
</p><p> "We plan to launch at least one new product every year going forward. The first product is going to be an all-new compact SUV which would be rolled out in the first quarter of the next financial year," Nissan Motor India Managing Director Rakesh Srivastava told reporters here.
</p><p> The company would launch multiple products in order to build a profitable and sustainable business in the country, he added.
</p><p> Currently, Nissan sells six models in India under both Nissan and Datsun brands.
</p><p> Commenting on the new product, Srivastava said the model has been designed in Japan keeping in mind requirements of the Indian market.
</p><p> "Globally, we have a range of SUV products. We are now looking to enhance our commitment to the market by coming out with a new offering in the B-SUV space (sub four metre compact SUV)," he noted.
</p><p> The company currently sells Kicks and Terrano SUVs in the C-SUV segment (one above B-SUV). It is only selling around 300 units of Kicks per month, while Terrano sales remain miniscule.
</p><p>  Srivastava said the company has gained useful insights from the Kicks and that would help the company introduce the new product in the market.
</p><p> When asked to comment on future of Datsun brand in the country, Srivastava added that the company would keep selling value products under the brand while focusing on high-selling SUV models under the Nissan lineage.
</p><p> He added the headquarters has left the responsibility of the Datsun brand to hosting nations. 
</p><p> Earlier, it has been reported that Nissan was looking to discontinue the Datsun brand globally as part of a cost-efficiency exercise.
</p><p> He said the brand still has relevance in the Indian market, accounting for about 70 per cent of Nissan India's sales and is planning "product interventions" in future to strengthen it further.
</p><p> In September 2018, Nissan had announced its MOVE 2022 strategy under which it looked to position Nissan as premium mainstream brand in India building on the company's SUV heritage. It had kicked off the strategy with the launch of SUV Kicks last year.
</p><p> Under the MOVE 2022 strategy it had looked to fix its business operation in India along with Saudi Arabia, where it has made significant investment but hasn't had much success.
</p><p> Under the strategy, the company had said it would address the mass market segment in India with its Datsun brand.
</p><p> Asked if the change in the Indian market strategy has to do with the issues faced by the Renaul-Nissan alliance in global level, Srivastava replied in the negative.
</p><p> It is all due to the changing landscape in the market, which has evolved so rapidly and the company has to keep in pace with it, he added. 
</p><p> When asked to comment on sales outlook for the coming financial year, he said that the company would like to grow in tune with the industry, which is expected to post "single-digit" growth.
</p> On the company's BS-VI transition, Srivastava said Nissan will not offer small diesel engines but is currently working on its line-up for both petrol and bigger diesel engine vehicles to comply with the new emission norm.  MSS RKL  MSS HRS

Although the second-generation CX-5, which debuted for the 2017 model year, doesn't sell quite as well as the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V, it certainly holds its own.</p><p>Through April, Toyota has sold just shy of 118,000 RAV4s, while Honda has moved about 116,000 CR-Vs. We were impressed by the CX-5's stylish design, stellar driving dynamics, and a cabin that felt surprisingly luxurious.</p><p>"The 2018 Mazda CX-5 definitely brings the Zoom Zoom to the compact crossover SUV market," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-cx-5-suv-review-images-2018-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">we said in our review</a>. On the inside, the infotainment system was lackluster.</p><p>This year, Mazda has made several updates to the CX-5, including the addition of the turbocharged engine from the larger CX-9 SUV.</p><p>Recently, we spent some time with a 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature AWD, clad in a gorgeous Deep Crystal Blue Metallic paint job.</p><p>The base 2019 Mazda CX-5 Sport with front-wheel drive starts at $24,350, while the top-of-the-line Signature trim starts at $36,890. All-wheel-drive is a $1,400 option on the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims. It's standard on Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims.</p><p>With options and fees, our Signature trim CX-5 came to an as-tested price of $39,905.
