Neysa Canfield</span></p><p class="caption">A soldier eating in the field.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The Army showed off its Close Combat Assault Ration at the Association of the United States Army this week in Washington, DC.</li><li>The CCAR weighs less than 40% of a an Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) and is expected to replace the First Strike Ration (FSR).</li><li>The CCAR "is a significant improvement in combat feeding," Douglas Tamilio, director of the Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, said Tuesday.</li><li>The Army is expected to start field-testing these next year and then hand them over to soldiers a few years later.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul><p>The Army showed off the future of battlefield combat meals at the Association of the United States Army this week in Washington, DC, revealing that it is still on track to begin field-testing the Close Combat Assault Ration next year.</p><p>"You all are familiar with MREs," Douglas Tamilio, director of the Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, said Tuesday.</p><p>The Close Combat Assault Ration "is a significant improvement in combat feeding" for units in environments with limited supply lines. The on-the-move First Strike Ration became an option for troops in 2007. The future is the CCAR.</p><p>Each CCAR ration offers up to 3,500 calories, sufficient for a 24-hour period.</p><p>To get the same amount of calories, a soldier would need to consume roughly three Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MREs) or one First Strike Ration, which is a little larger than one MRE. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Saturday marked the fifth straight night of unrest across the United States after the death of <keyword id="9295731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="george-floyd">George Floyd</keyword>, a black man who was killed in police custody in Minneapolis.</li><li>Clashes broke out in cities across the country between protesters and police.</li><li>Many videos circulated online showing instances of police officers using <keyword id="1238121" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="excessive-force">excessive force</keyword>, both against demonstrators and members of the media.</li></ul><p>Police across America drew outrage amid protests and riots on Saturday, the fifth night in a row of unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death.</p><p>In a number of different cities, police officers were seen on cellphone videos mowing down protesters with their cruisers, shoving people, pepper spraying protesters who were not resisting, and arresting or using force against journalists.</p><p>One incident in <keyword id="72226" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> was filmed from various angles, when two police cruisers surrounded by protesters hurling water bottles and pylons suddenly lurched into the crowd, mowing down a metal barricade and sending bodies flying.</p><p>The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on the videos. Mayor Bill de Blasio called the incident "troubling," but suggested the protesters were to blame for not getting out of the path of the cruisers.</p><p>Also in New York, an officer was filmed pulling down a protester's face mask and spraying him with pepper spray. The protester's hands had been in the air and he had been backing away when the officer approached.</p><p>Another video from Salt Lake City, Utah, showed officers aggressively shoving down an elderly man holding a cane.</p><p>In Louisville, Kentucky, videos showed what appeared to be plainclothes police officers destroying water jugs left outside for protesters, and throwing bottled water into the back of a pickup truck.
