The latest list from the Congress party fields Ramana Kumari Pedada from Visakhapatnam, Narahrasetti Narasimha Rao from Vijayawada and J Lakshmi Narasimha Yadav from Nandyal Lok Sabha constituencies. With this, the party’s candidates for all the constituencies have been declared. The latest list also sees four of its assembly seat candidates replaced. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is going for polls alone. The state has 25 Lok Sabha constituencies and 175 assembly constituencies. Election 2019: Congress candidate list for Andhra Pradesh

HYDERABAD: The year was 1992. So engrossed was the nation with economic liberalization that nothing else was supposed to matter. In the least, the wedding of <keyword id="2048745" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Anupama-Priyadarshini">Anupama Priyadarshini</keyword> to her 24-year-old beau, <keyword id="276564" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Satya-Nadella">Satya Nadella</keyword>. 
 But then, this low-key family affair in New Delhi eventually ended up becoming a talking point, thanks to an illustrious guest who decided to turn up at the venue uninvited. It was the then <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> P V <keyword id="6358441" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Narasimha-Rao">Narasimha Rao</keyword>. 
 
"They (the families) had planned a simple event without fanfare. But Rao found out about it and gatecrashed. He even scolded them (his two prized secretaries) for not inviting him," recalled Anupama's cousin Dinesh S Sastry, who shuttles between Washington DC and San Francisco, over e-mails from the US. "This just shows how humble the families were," Sastry repeatedly appeared to stress, all through his fond recollections of that day over two decades ago. 
 
His "uncle" (the husband of his mother's first cousin) K R Venugopal, Anupama's father, was then secretary to the PM, in-charge of Kashmir affairs and social development, while Nadella's father, B N Yugandhar, was special secretary to the PM. 
 
"Even during their days in Seattle thereafter, this inherited simplicity did not leave their side," Sastry, a trustee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), wrote about his Andhra food-crazy brother-in-law and wife who frequented his parents' home there.

GST "biggest madness of the 21st century": Subramanian Swamy

MPs and MLAs taking bribes to vote or make a speech in the <keyword id="19910021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="house" source="keywords">House</keyword> are not immune from prosecution, the Supreme Court said on Monday in a landmark, unanimous verdict that overrules its 1998 judgment protecting such lawmakers. Observing that bribery is not protected by parliamentary privileges, a seven-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y <keyword id="19985698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrachud" source="keywords">Chandrachud</keyword> held that a five-judge bench's interpretation in the 1998 verdict in the JMM bribery case was contrary to Articles 105 and 194 of the Constitution. Describing the judgment as "great", Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> said in a post on X that it would "ensure clean politics and deepen people's faith in the system". Articles 105 and 194 deal with the powers and privileges of MPs and MLAs in the Parliament and the legislative assemblies. "Corruption and bribery by members of the legislatures erode probity in public life," the CJI, who read the operative part of the verdict, said while pronouncing the verdict today. The bench also comprised Justices A S Bopanna, M M Sundresh, P S Narasimha, J B Pardiwala, <keyword id="19931190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjay-kumar" source="keywords">Sanjay Kumar</keyword> and Manoj Misra. In 1998, the five-judge constitution bench held in its majority verdict on the Narasimha Rao versus CBI case that parliamentarians have immunity against criminal prosecution for any speech made and vote cast inside the House under Articles 105(2) and 194(2). The seven-judge bench was reconsidering the 1998 judgement. While pronouncing the verdict, the CJI said Article 105 of the Constitution seeks to sustain an environment to have deliberations by the lawmakers in the House and this atmosphere is vitiated when a member is bribed to deliver a speech. Justice Chandrachud said the privileges claimed must have a nexus to the collective functioning of the House and must have a relationship with the essential functions of a legislator which he or she has to discharge. The seven-judge bench had reserved its judgement in the matter on October 5 last year. During the arguments, the Centre had submitted that bribery can never be a subject matter of immunity and a parliamentary privilege is not meant to place a lawmaker above law. The top court, in the course of the hearing, had said it will examine whether the immunity granted to lawmakers from prosecution for taking bribes to make a speech or vote in Parliament and state legislatures extends to them even if criminality is attached to their actions. On September 20, 2023, the <keyword id="19936355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apex-court" source="keywords">apex court</keyword> had agreed to reconsider its 1998 judgement, saying it was an important issue having a significant bearing on "morality of polity". The issue came under the apex court's lens in 2019, when a bench headed by then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing an appeal filed by <keyword id="20405400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sita-soren" source="keywords">Sita Soren</keyword>, JMM MLA from Jama and daughter-in-law of party chief Shibu <keyword id="19968807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="soren" source="keywords">Soren</keyword>. She was an accused in the JMM bribery scandal. The Gogoi-led bench had referred to a five-judge bench the matter, noting it had "wide ramification" and was of "substantial public importance". Sita Soren was accused of taking bribes to vote for a particular candidate in the Rajya Sabha election in 2012. She contended that the constitutional provision granting lawmakers immunity from prosecution, which saw her father-in-law being let off the hook in the JMM bribery scandal, be applied to her. She moved the apex court against the Jharkhand High Court order of February 17, 2014 refusing to quash the criminal case lodged against her. The three-judge bench had then said it will revisit the apex court verdict in the JMM bribery case involving Shibu Soren, a former Jharkhand chief minister and ex-union minister, and four other party MPs who had accepted bribes to vote against the no-confidence motion threatening the survival of the P V Narasimha Rao government in 1993. The Narasimha Rao government, which was in a minority, survived the no-confidence vote with their support. The CBI registered a case against Soren and four other JMM Lok Sabha MPs but the Supreme Court quashed it citing immunity from prosecution they enjoyed under Article 105(2) of the Constitution. No immunity for MPs, MLAs taking bribe to vote, make speech in House: SC

 The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said this when an <keyword id="6356198" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RTI">RTI</keyword> applicant sought a copy of leave rules and procedures for the Prime Minister of the country from it and the <keyword id="116854" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet-secretariat">Cabinet Secretariat</keyword>. "The Prime Minister can be said to be on duty all the time," the Right to Information (RTI) response from the PMO said. 
 The applicant also wanted to know if former prime ministers <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword>, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, H D Deve Gowda, I K Gujral, P V Narasimha Rao, Chandrashekhar, V P Singh and <keyword id="12596" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajiv-Gandhi">Rajiv Gandhi</keyword> had availed any leave and were there any records. 
 "Information regarding leave record of previous PMs is not a part of records held by this office. However, it may be noted that no leave has been availed by present PM i.e. <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> since taking over charge," the RTI reply said.

New Delhi, Dec 6 () Nominated Rajya Sabha member Narendra Jadhav on Friday moved a private member's bill that seeks to set up a committee to scrutinise foreign investments in financial services, critical infrastructure and technology sectors having bearing on national security.
 Moving the Foreign Investment in Financial Services, Critical Infrastructure and Technology Affecting National Security (Regulation) Bill, he said, "This bill seeks to protect national security while promoting foreign investment."
 "This is sought to be done by reforming the process by which foreign investments are examined in the light of national security considerations," he added.
 The bill seeks to establish a committee on foreign investment headed by the economic affairs secretary to effectively guard against the risk to national security posed by certain types of foreign investment in financial services, critical infrastructure and technology sectors.
 Earlier, the members in the House participated in the discussion on another private member's bill -- the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill -- which seeks to remove limit on election expenditure by candidates.

id="6355187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> constituencies and all of them went for 2019 Lok Sabha elections polling on the same day. When the country began its first phase of polling on April 11, 2019, Telangana voted from all its constituencies. Telangana gave a sweeping victory to the <keyword id="43749" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="TRS">TRS</keyword> during the assembly polls last year. The party is not facing the elections with the same enthusiasm given by the overwhelming victory. The state sees a triangular contest and the other parties in opposition namely the Congress and the BJP are now focusing on a select few seats hoping to win them for the parliament. The Nizamabad constituency has claimed the maximum amount of attention from the whole of the country as there are 185 candidates lined up to try their luck during 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all of them eagerly waiting for the results. More than 170 of these contesting candidates are farmers. The present ballot units of the EVMs can fit in only 16 candidates and hence the election commission had set up 12 ballot units in all the polling booths of the Nizamabad constituency to record the votes by the electors. The winning candidate from this constituency is all set to move to the limelight on the result day.
