"India's Index of Industrial Production grows by 3.8 per cent in January 2024," an official statement said. The data released by the <keyword id="20070866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="keywords">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="20067517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nso" source="keywords">NSO</keyword>) showed that the manufacturing sector's output grew 3.2 per cent in January 2024, down from 4.5 per cent in the year-ago month. In January this year, mining production rose 5.9 per cent, and power output increased 5.6 per cent. The IIP grew 5.9 per cent during April 2023 to January 2024 compared to a 5.5 per cent expansion in the year-ago period.

New Delhi [India], March 12 (ANI): The latest data released by the <keyword id="20070866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="keywords">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="20067517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nso" source="keywords">NSO</keyword>), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), indicates a slight easing in retail inflation for the month of February 2024. According to the provisional figures provided by the NSO, the retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (General), stood at 5.09 per cent in February 2024. This marks a marginal decrease from 5.10 per cent recorded in January 2024. The combined inflation rate for rural and urban areas came down to 5.09 per cent from the previous month's 5.10 per cent. The data further reveals that the <keyword id="20931744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-food-price" source="keywords">Consumer Food Price</keyword> Index (<keyword id="20931745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cfpi" source="keywords">CFPI</keyword>) witnessed a similar trend, with a slight decrease from 8.30 per cent in January 2024 to 8.21 per cent in February 2024. Both rural and urban areas experienced a dip in food inflation, indicating a marginal relief for consumers across the board. The monthly changes in the General Indices and CFPIs show a negligible increase of 0.16 per cent in the combined CPI (General) and 0.11 per cent in the CFPI from January 2024 to February 2024. This indicates a relatively stable price movement in essential goods and services during the said period. The NSO collects price data from a vast sample size, covering both rural and urban markets across all states and union territories. During February 2024, data was collected from 100 per cent of villages and 98.5 per cent of urban markets. The comprehensive coverage ensures that the inflation figures are representative of the diverse consumption patterns across the country. In terms of the subgroup analysis, notable trends were observed in various categories. Cereals and products, meat and fish, and egg prices showed moderate increases, contributing to the overall inflation rate. On the other hand, certain items like oils and fats experienced a decline in prices, exerting downward pressure on inflation. The NSO has also provided state-wise inflation data, highlighting the varying price dynamics across different regions. States like <keyword id="19896313" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="keywords">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, Telangana, and <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> recorded relatively higher inflation rates, while states like Delhi and Maharashtra witnessed a more subdued inflationary environment. Looking ahead, the NSO has announced that the next release of CPI data for March 2024 is scheduled for April 12, 2024. However, softening of core inflation should provide confidence to trajectory of inflation moving as expected. We think RBI would rather continue with stability priority and continue maintaining 4% inflation target as sacrosanct, and hence we do not see premature easing from RBI,” said Akhil Mittal, senior fund manager-fixed income, Tata Mutual Fund. Most experts believe that uncertain food prices will keep the central bank cautious. "CPI inflation came in slightly softer than our expectations led by moderation in food prices. Positively though, core inflation softened in line with our expectations. However, uncertainties in food inflation outlook should keep RBI cautious in the near term, with much of action by the RBI expected on the liquidity front," said Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist, Kotak Mahindra Bank. The inflation has come back to the Reserve Bank's comfort level of below 6% after a gap of two months. The inflation based on the consumer price index (<keyword id="6355865" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="cpi" source="Orion">CPI</keyword>) was 6.83% in August and 7.41% in September 2022. The previous low was in June this year when the reading stood at 4.87%. According to the data released by the National Statistical Office (<keyword id="2501810" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="nso" source="Orion">NSO</keyword>), the inflation in the food basket came down to 6.56% in September from 9.94% in the preceding month. Commenting on the reading, Madan Sabnvis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda said, "Core inflation has come down further to 4.5%, and there is moderation cross all categories with inflation being less than 5%." He, however, pointed out that rural inflation was higher than urban at 5.3% while the latter was 4.7%. The higher weight to food products caused this spike in inflation. The Reserve Bank mainly factors in retail inflation while arriving at its bi-monthly monetary policy. August <keyword id="6427912" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="iip" source="Orion">IIP</keyword> India's factory output, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), has meanwhile come in at 10.3% for the the month of August 2023. A year ago for the same period, the reading was at 0.7%. Thus, the August reading is overstated due to the base effect and hence should be viewed against this backdrop. The data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that the manufacturing sector's output increased by 9.3% in August 2023. "This high growth in IIP corroborates with the buoyant PMIs and GST collections. The next two months should ideally see sustained growth if rural demand revives – this has been a lacuna so far," said Sabnvis. Mining production rose 12.3% during the month under review. Power output grew 15.3%. The IIP grew by 6.1% in April-August 2023 compared to 7.7% in the same period of 2022-23.

This will remain sticky as the government is not lowering excise duties on fuel, while companies are still in the process of passing on the higher input costs,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. Personal care and household goods witnessed higher input costs that have led to inflation of 8.1% and 7.4% respectively. The government also released factory output data on Thursday. The index of industrial production (IIP) for November rose to 7.1%, as against 4% in October 2022. The manufacturing segment grew at 6.1%. The consumer durable and non-durable segments both registered healthy growth rates of 5.1% and 8.9% respectively. “While the progress is overall good with the IIP growing by 5.5% for the 8-month period, it needs to be seen if this can be sustained as the festival season ends in December. Also the willingness of governments – both states and centre to keep their capex rolling would largely drive future growth in the infra sector,” Sabnavis said. ‘Arjuna's eye on inflation’ The RBI which claims to have been keeping an ‘Arjuna's eye on inflation’ has hiked key interest rates by five times since May 2022. Cumulatively, the rates rose by 2.25% across five hikes, and the repo rate now stands at 6.25%. RBI governor Shaktikanta Das has been repeating in his policy statements that the central bank is keeping an ‘Arjuna’s eye’ on inflation i.e. watching it closely. The retail inflation or Consumer Price Index (CPI) has been above its tolerance limit for three quarters straight as global supply chain issues pushed up fuel prices in addition to that of essential food items like wheat and edible oil, since the start of this financial year. “Going forward, food inflation is likely to moderate with the usual winter softening and the likelihood of a bountiful rabi harvest, but pressure points remain in the form of prices of cereals, milk and spices,” Das has said in a statement on December 7, 2022 as he announced his fifth straight interest rate hike. “We believe that the RBI will continue to increase rates in February policy by 25 bps which can be the last hike for this cycle as the numbers in the coming months would come down due to the base effect,” said Sabnavis. The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/12/03/israel-nso-pegasus-hack-us-diplomats/">reported</a> that 11 officials were alerted by Apple in recent months that their phones had been hacked with the NSO software, which is known as Pegasus. "If our investigation shall show these actions indeed happened with NSO's tools, such customer will be terminated permanently and legal actions will take place," an NSO spokesperson told Reuters. The spokesperson added that the company will "cooperate with any relevant government authority and present the full information we will have."In a statement to Insider, an NSO spokesperson said, "Once the inquiry was received, and before any investigation under our compliance policy, we have decided to immediately terminate relevant customers' access to the system, due to the severity of the allegations. To this point, we haven't received any information nor the phone numbers, nor any indication that NSO's tools were used in this case.""To clarify, the installation of our software by the customer occurs via phone numbers. As stated before, NSO's technologies are blocked from working on US (+1) numbers. Once the software is sold to the licensed customer, NSO has no way to know who the targets of the customers are, as such, we were not and could not have been aware of this case," the spokesperson added. Researchers believe Pegasus systems can break into smartphone devices via multiple routes, some of which need no action by the smartphone owner, and grant the hacker access to call records, photos, and web browser histories or even turn the phone into a listening device.A State Department spokesperson in a statement to Insider said the department could not confirm the report but added that it "takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected.""Like every large organization with a global presence, we closely monitor cybersecurity conditions, and are continuously updating our security posture to adapt to changing tactics by adversaries," the spokesperson added."As part of its commitment to put human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy, the Biden-Harris Administration is taking action to stem the proliferation and misuse of digital tools used for repression. The company admitted that a small number of its users may have been targeted by a NSO Group's exploit to install Pegasus on Apple devices. "State-sponsored actors like the NSO Group spend millions of dollars on sophisticated surveillance technologies without effective accountability. That needs to change," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. "Apple devices are the most secure consumer hardware on the market -- but private companies developing state-sponsored spyware have become even more dangerous," he said in a statement late on Tuesday. Apple's complaint provides new information on NSO Group's 'FORCEDENTRY', an exploit for a now-patched vulnerability previously used to break into a victim's Apple device and install the latest version of NSO Group's spyware product, Pegasus. The exploit was originally identified by the Citizen Lab, a research group at the University of Toronto. "The spyware was used to attack a small number of Apple users worldwide with dangerous malware and spyware," the company informed. Apple said it is notifying the small number of users that it discovered may have been targeted by 'FORCEDENTRY'. Apple follows WhatsApp and its parent company Meta (formerly Facebook) in suing Pegasus spyware maker NSO Group. The Apple lawsuit also seeks redress for NSO Group's flagrant violations of the US federal and state law, arising out of its efforts to target and attack Apple and its users. To further strengthen efforts against cyber attacks, Apple said it will be contributing $10 million, as well as any damages from the lawsuit, to organisations pursuing cyber-surveillance research and advocacy.
