In a bizarre incident, a WhatsApp scammer has used AI <keyword id="8809612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepfake-video" source="Orion">deepfake video</keyword> to steal ₹40,000 from <keyword id="18051655" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ps-radhakrishnan" source="Orion">PS Radhakrishnan</keyword>, a 73-year-old retired government employee from Kozhikode, Kerala. Deepfake involves using AI to replace the likeness of one person with another. Initially, he asked the victim about his family members, shared his own family photographs and talked about their mutual colleagues. Later, the scammer called the victim and claimed that he was at the Dubai airport, waiting to board a flight to India. He then claimed that his sister-in-law was being prepped for an emergency surgery in Mumbai and an advance of ₹40,000 was needed. Radhakrishnan was initially sceptical and did not wish to send the money fearing an online scam. The scammer then said that he would immediately video call to put Radhakrishnan’s fears to rest. The scammer then video-called Radhakrishnan and spoke to him for 25 seconds. The victim has claimed that the scammer looked exactly like his friend and spoke like a normal person. This prompted him to send ₹40,000 to the scammer. The scammer then again called the victim, asking for an additional ₹35,000. This spooked Radhakrishnan, who then contacted his friend seeking confirmation but the friend denied any knowledge about all of this. After realising he had been scammed, Radhakrishnan approached the <keyword id="18051656" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-cyber-cell" source="Orion">National Cyber Cell</keyword> and the complaint was then transferred to the Kerala Police. The police were able to trace the money and froze the account. The Kerala Police have said that they have been able to recover the entire amount of ₹40,000. AI-savvy scammer uses deepfake video to steal ₹40,000 via WhatsApp

<ul><li>The massive power cut in India’s financial capital Mumbai on October 12 may have been the work of hackers. </li><li>The Maharashtra Police’s cyber cell probe has reportedly found evidence of suspicious logins and is working to determine if this was a coordinated attempt to take down Mumbai’s power grid.</li><li>According to an earlier statement by the state’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut, the possibility of sabotage cannot be ruled out.</li></ul>The power was out in Mumbai for nearly a day on October 12, putting the stock exchanges, medical facilities, and other critical infrastructure at risk. Now, the state police’s cyber cell probe has reportedly revealed that this may have been the work of state-sponsored hackers. Sources told the <a href="https://mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/cover-story/oct-12-blackout-was-a-sabotage/articleshow/79312959.cms">Mumbai Mirror</a> that multiple ‘suspicious’ logins on the supply and transmission utility servers were detected during the month-long probe. Most of these accounts were from other Asian countries, including Singapore. The investigation is currently ongoing to determine whether it was a coordinated attempt to bring down India’s financial capital. State-sponsored hackers targeting India According to a report by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/top-cyber-espionage-groups-that-have-india-in-their-crosshairs/slidelist/79120867.cms">CYFIRMA</a>, at least four different state-sponsored hacking groups have India in their crosshairs. This includes Mission 2025, Apt36, Stone Panda, and the infamous Lazarus Group. However, until more information comes to light, there’s no way to tell whether it was one of these four groups or a new player altogether that attacked India’s power grids. According to Mumbai Mirror, the attempts to break through have been ongoing since February — shortly after the COVID-19 outbreak started to spread. At the time of the Mumbai power outage, Maharashtra’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut told the media that the possibility of sabotage could not be ruled out. “There was a technical problem and the Kharghar unit stopped. There was an islanding failure in Mumbai, which shouldn't have happened. This is the reason that the possibility of sabotage is suspected,” he said. Not only was the department rendered inoperable for three days, its website and mobile app were also taken down. Neel Kamal Singh from the IT wing of the J&amp;K Power Department <a href="https://twitter.com/jkmediasocial/status/1276213262229450752">told the press</a> that it was a ransomware attack, where all official files and data have been encrypted by the hackers. Most attacks now happen in the digital space, and India is not alone in its struggles. Canada, for instance, has named China and Russia as primary threats to its cybersecurity. The country’s Communications Security Establishment (CSE) fears that these foreign actors are likely to target Canada’s power supply. Considering the scope of probe into the case, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar has transferred it to the crime branch, he said. The FIR was registered earlier this month at Matunga police station in Mumbai against 32 people, including the "promoter" of the app Saurabh Chandrakar, <keyword id="142062" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ravi-uppal" source="Orion">Ravi Uppal</keyword>, Shubham Soni and others for allegedly committing the fraud since 2019, police earlier said. As per the FIR, the accused have defrauded people of nearly Rs 15,000 crore. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently claimed a forensic analysis and a statement made by a 'cash courier' led to "startling allegations" that Mahadev betting app promoters have paid about Rs 508 crore to the Chhattisgarh chief minister so far, and that "these are subject matter of investigation". Later, the BJP released a video of Shubham Soni saying he was the owner of the app and had the "proof" of paying Rs 508 crore so far to Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel. The chief minister has rejected the claim. On November 5, the Centre issued blocking orders against 22 illegal betting platforms, including the Mahadev app, on ED's request. The action of banning the 22 illegal betting platforms follows investigations conducted by the ED against an illegal betting app syndicate and subsequent raids in connection with the Mahadev app in Chhattisgarh. The Chhattisgarh police have registered at least 75 FIRs in connection with the app and the ED has also conducted a probe into the case, the official said.

Addressing the issue, Amulya Patnaik reportedly said that this is the first time a dedicated lab has been formed to counter cyber crime. We are stepping up our efforts to enhance the cybercrime fighting capabilities to obstruct cyber threats. Aimed at threat analysis, the lab has been made well equipped with crypto currency forensics, network forensics, malware forensics, and recovery of damaged hard drives. In a technical move, Delhi Police has decided to use 'porn detection sticks', which are USB devices with special software to bring back pornographic content, even the one that has been deleted. 
 
Other than fighting cyber crime, it would also be used to catch paedophiles, exes playing revenge porn, and sex criminals who use photos and videos of their victims for extorting money or other blackmails. 
 
The said software can scan computers for porn images, videos and chats, no matter if they are present in the system or not. While detecting and analysing faces, flesh tones, shapes and curves, it leaves no trace that it was used, making it immensely useful in a developing case that requires secrecy. 
 The cops are presently shopping for these sticks, and after three months, they would have a better handle on cyber crime. The <keyword id="388221" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyber-cell">Cyber Cell</keyword> is going to be revamped, and state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure will be used to investigate cases effectively.
