Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied on Monday after the <keyword id="20032950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-led-government" source="keywords">BJP-led government</keyword> secured a majority in the latest state elections in Maharashtra. Experts noted that the election results have an impact on the markets today, and if past trends are followed, the markets may witness some rally amid the return of the BJP in the Maharashtra state elections. <keyword id="20161891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Bagga" source="keywords">Ajay Bagga</keyword> Banking and Market Expert stated that "The just concluded elections in Maharashtra, the results of which were declared on November 23rd, will have a positive immediate impact on the stock markets. The landslide win for the BJP lead coalition in the Maharashtra state elections could lead to a short-term boost to the Indian stock markets which have been in a declining mode" He further added "Investors will interpret this mandate as favourable for the capex and infrastructure push that is ongoing in Maharashtra. The beneficiary sectors of this election are industrials, infrastructure, manufacturing, real estate and financials". In the Nifty 50 list, 49 stocks gained during the opening session, while only one stock declined. Shri Finance opened as the top gainer in the Nifty 50. According to a press release, the total consideration for this order is approximately Rs 981.45 Crores. The execution period for this contract spans from August 2024 to August 2025. MSRTC operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses. With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies. The order, awarded by the domestic entity MSRTC, is for the supply of BSVI OBD II Diesel Fuel Type Fully Built Passenger Buses. MSRTC, one of India's largest state transport undertakings, operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses. With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies. They will also be equipped with the proven iGEN6 BS VI OBD II technology, boasting a 197 HP H-Series Engine and Rear Air Suspension, among other advanced features. The buses will be manufactured at Ashok Leyland's exclusive bus body plants using state-of-the-art technology, ensuring enhanced safety, improved comfort, and a lower total cost of ownership for MSRTC. Ashok Leyland bags single largest order of 2,104 fully built buses from Maharashtra government

In a significant move aimed at recognising mothers' vital roles in upbringing, the Maharashtra cabinet has mandated the inclusion of mothers' names in government documents. Effective May 1, 2024, the format for government documents will require the document-holder’s first name to be followed by the mother’s first name and then the father’s first name and surname. Individuals born on or after May 1, 2014, are required to adhere to this format for all government documents, including birth certificates, property documents, Aadhar cards and PAN cards, as well as school and revenue documents, examination certificates and salary slips, as stated in the government’s press note. The state's public health department has been tasked with consulting the Centre regarding the inclusion of the mother’s name in birth and death registrations. For married women, the prevailing practice of listing the woman’s name followed by her husband’s first name and surname will remain unchanged. Orphans will be exempt from including the mother’s name. In alignment with this decision, Maharashtra Chief Minister <keyword id="19913631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eknath-shinde" source="keywords">Eknath Shinde</keyword> had a new nameplate installed outside his office chamber at the state secretariat in south Mumbai. The updated nameplate now includes his mother's name before that of his father, reading 'Eknath Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde'. As Mumbai, India's financial capital, witnessed vertical growth over the years with highrises dotting its skyline, some 'gaothans' (villages) have held onto their heritage and legacy. Ranwar, in the heart of Bandra, is one such village that has resisted the urge to make way for towering structures. Dwarfed by highrises, the East Indian-majority village has narrow streets lined with old quaint bungalows and crosses outside homes. With jazz music streaming in the air, walking around the area can transport you to a simpler time. While Bandra developed rapidly and became home to Bollywood's elite and a burgeoning street shopping hub, residents of Ranwar maintained their old bungalows. The coexistence, however, has come at a price, causing traffic issues and crowding. And now, plans are afoot to give the 300-year-old village a facelift while preserving the past. Talking to PTI, <keyword id="23283968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Johan-Dharmai" source="Orion">Johan Dharmai</keyword>, BJP secretary and a member of the East Indian community, said, "Locals want to preserve the heritage. One of the steps in the facelift plan is to close vehicle movement and build a walkway so that tourists can take a stroll and enjoy the architecture." Though many houses in Ranwar are now being redeveloped, Veronica Street has maintained its old-world charm. It has a square erected in 1866. However, honking rents the air on this street, as motorists see it as a shortcut to Bandra Reclamation and other areas. Mehboob Studio is just a stone's throw away, and senior citizens living on Veronica Street recall seeing actors Helen and Zeenat Aman around Ranwar. A beautification, restoration and conservation project is being initiated to improve safety, regulate traffic and create awareness about the centuries-old village. Mumbai BJP president and <keyword id="20238930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-West" source="keywords">Bandra West</keyword> MLA Ashish Shelar recently met locals to discuss ways to move the project forward. "The beauty of Bandra West is its 'gaothans'. The heritage needs to be protected and showcased. I have asked the government to allocate funds from the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC). <keyword id="23283965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranwar-Village" source="keywords">Ranwar village</keyword> will get a facelift. The work has begun on roads, CCTV cameras, street light illumination, parking and traffic plan will be in place with the help of locals and architects," Shelar told PTI. <keyword id="23283967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Architect-Samir-DMonte" source="keywords">Architect Samir D'Monte</keyword> has been working with the Ranwar Veronica Street Residents' Association since 2009, and they identified a range of problems that the area faced. D'Monte said improvements were made to open spaces and common areas, roads, sewage and drainage systems, street signage, street lighting and traffic and parking management. Apart from this, individual houses were restored, and an innovative fire system was also introduced. Locals say most residents are senior citizens and want to live peacefully without disturbances by motorists. Kaevan Umrigar of Khaki Tours, who works to create awareness about Mumbai's heritage, said Bandra comprised 23 gaothans that housed fisher folk, Kunbis (a farming community) and the agris community who had salt pans. "Ranwar was a farming village, and the area had paddy fields. Later, these paddy fields made way for urban settlements. These little villages are now trapped in the city. Now, only 10 to 15 gaothans in Bandra have survived," he said. But preserving heritage comes at a cost, and if a 'gaothan' comes under heritage guidelines, it becomes difficult to upgrade a home in the area or live a modern life, Umigar said, adding that heritage should be made attractive by tapping the tourism potential of these areas. 'Gaothans' in Mumbai and the larger Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) are urban villages that house the city's original inhabitants. The Mumbai suburban district collector and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been roped in for Ranwar's facelift plan. Umigar calls land scarcity a threat to 'gaothans', with only 100 left in the city. "When someone wants to develop gaothans, they want to do it vertically. There is a constant battle between heritage and development. They (villages) survive because the houses are tightly packed and on narrow lanes. So individual houses are not attractive for redevelopment, and parking becomes an issue," he said.

300-year-old Bandra village to get facelift to conserve its glorious past

A recent case from <keyword id="19932272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navi-Mumbai" source="keywords">Navi Mumbai</keyword> has now come to light where aspirants were robed off Rs 1.3 crore in total. The authorities in Navi Mumbai have registered a case against six people, accused of defrauding job seekers of Rs 1.31 crore, according to officials from Kharghar police station. The accused allegedly promised clerical positions in the <keyword id="19909154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Railways" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> to 20 victims, collecting the funds through digital payments and cash between September 2022 and April 2023. <h2>The Scam: False promises of Railway jobs </h2> The six people, as per a PTI report, contacted the victims with guarantees of securing clerical roles in the Indian Railways. Over the course of several months, the accused collected a total of Rs 1.31 crore from the job aspirants, giving false assurances about placements. However, when the victims, all residents of the Kharghar area, began asking about their job status, the accused stopped responding and failed to return the money. One of the six accused people allegedly misappropriated the funds, using the collected money for personal purposes. It was reported that this person used the victims’ money to finance the construction of a house in Kolhapur, adding another layer of betrayal to the scam. <h2>Legal action and investigation </h2> Realising they had been duped, the victims filed a complaint with the Kharghar police. Following this, the police registered an FIR against the six accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention). The police are currently working to locate and apprehend the individuals involved. The case highlights the ongoing risk of job-related scams, where fraudsters prey on the aspirations of job seekers, especially in sectors like the Indian Railways, known for secure government jobs. It should also allow <keyword id="21006654" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="indexation-benefits" source="keywords">indexation benefits</keyword> for other forms of <keyword id="20044873" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="savings" source="keywords">savings</keyword> such as <keyword id="19905382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stocks" source="keywords">stocks</keyword> and <keyword id="19975805" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fixed-deposits" source="keywords">fixed deposits</keyword>. Professionals' Congress Chairman Praveen Chakravarty accused the government of "betraying" the middle and salaried class in the Union Budget through the removal of indexation and higher taxes on their savings and <keyword id="22703183" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-gains" source="keywords">investment gains</keyword>. "On 23rd July, Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> presented the government's budget in Parliament. We welcomed certain aspects but we strongly opposed many parts of the budget. We welcomed the fact that the FM took some ideas from the Congress party's manifesto such as the employment linked incentive (ELI) scheme, the Apprenticeship Act and removing Angel tax," Chakravarty said at a press conference at the AICC headquarters here. Among other things, we strongly opposed what the finance did to the middle class and salaried professionals, he said. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in his response to the Budget in Parliament categorically said that this was a "betrayal of the middle class" through removal of indexation and higher taxes on their savings and investment gains, Chakravarty pointed out. "He (Gandhi) had promised to fight for the middle class on this issue. This issue affected nearly 7 crore Indians who filed income taxes, owned or aspire to own a home and invest their savings. In this budget, effectively, through removal of indexation and increase in capital gains taxes, the taxes of salaried professionals through investment gains went up dramatically," he said. Already, the middle class and the salaried professionals are bearing the brunt of taxation under the Modi government because for the first time in India, total income taxes paid by middle class individuals are higher than taxes paid by rich corporates, Chakravarty said. There were huge protests on social media and in business events in cities like Mumbai where professionals came out spontaneously to protest, he said. Chakravarty said the <keyword id="22703184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-India-Professionals-Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="All India Professionals' Congress" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="All India Professionals' Congress">All India Professionals' Congress</keyword> and the Congress Party launched a campaign to 'Bring Back Indexation' with a petition asking people to sign it. "We had nearly 12,000 people who signed the petition in just one day since its launch. Yesterday, the government of India announced a rollback of indexation of property gains by giving individuals the option to continue with indexation benefits. We welcome this. This is a victory to the 7 crore people that file income tax," he said. "But this is not enough. We urge the government to allow indexation benefits for other forms of savings too such as stocks, debt, fixed deposits and so on," Chakravarty asserted. More importantly, this is a testament to middle class power and the power of democracy, he said. "When professionals come together and raise their voice, it will be heard. This is also proof of what a strong Opposition and a concerted and united effort can achieve for the people of India. The AIPC will continue to raise issues that impact the middle class working professionals," Chakravarty said. His remarks come a day after the government proposed significant relief for individuals who bought houses before July 23, 2024, by giving them the option to choose between two tax rates for long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. The Budget 2024-25 had proposed to lower the LTCG from 20% to 12.5% but removed the indexation benefits. The new rates have come into effect from July 23, 2024. The indexation benefit allowed the taxpayers to compute gains arising out of the sale of capital assets after adjusting for inflation. The tax experts had said that the proposed changes in the Budget would raise the LTCG tax burden. As per the amendments to Finance Bill, 2024, circulated to the Lok Sabha members on Tuesday, individuals or HuF who bought houses before July 23, 2024, can compute his/her taxes under the new scheme (@12.5% without indexation) and old scheme (@20% with indexation) and pay such tax which is lower of the two. After the Budget presentation, the Income Tax department said that 'substantial tax savings' are expected for a vast majority of taxpayers due to a reduction in the long-term capital gains tax (LTCG) rate in the real estate sector. As per the changes brought in the 2024-25 Budget, the government has retained the indexation benefit for the taxpayers on properties bought or inherited before 2001.

Yes, the tickets were exorbitantly expensive, way above the prices advertised on <keyword id="20215809" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="BookMyShow" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BookMyShow" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BookMyShow">BookMyShow</keyword> (BMS), the official ticketing partner. But so what? What mattered was that they could finally attend Coldplay's concert. At 12 noon on September 22, when bookings for Coldplay’s 2025 India leg of “Music of the Sphere” world tour had commenced, A was also in line, having logged in since 11:30 am, from 4 different screens and through 6 cousins. But God, and BMS were in no mood to reward her efforts and patience. The ticket sale lasted for a mere few seconds, before the site crashed and all tickets were sold out. Turns out, even the second time wasn’t the charm for them. The first time, too, A had not been able to get tickets for Diljit’s Dil-luminati India tour, which had gone live earlier last month. They had applied for an HDFC Pixel credit card to access the early-bird offer, but it was as if luck was taunting them “vibe teri meri na mildi aa”. could not get tickets for Diljit’s concert as well, which had also vanished within minutes of going live, much like Coldplay's. That’s why, when they saw that tickets for both Diljit and Coldplay were being sold by various Instagram accounts, despite showing as sold out on <keyword id="20496317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato-Live" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato Live" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Zomato Live">Zomato Live</keyword> and BookMyShow, it seemed magical to A. And per Coldplay, “If you were to ask me, after all that we've been through. Still believe in magic?”, the only acceptable response is “Yes I do, of course I do!” So, they went ahead, agreed to pay Rs 35,000, and bought Coldplay tickets which would’ve cost them Rs 6,450 via BMS. A steep price to pay, but at least they had their ticket to “an experience of a lifetime!”. As it is, the band had announced its retirement post its 12th album, and the band had just launched its 10th album, "Moon Music". <h2>BookMyShow to “fix” scalpers?</h2>But this morning, BMS startled many people like A by stating that unethically sourced tickets (read: tickets not directly booked via BMS) could be canceled. The platform had already filed an FIR to this effect with the <keyword id="19906039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-police" source="keywords">Mumbai police</keyword> on October 2, 2024, against the rampant “ticket scalping and black marketing of tickets for Coldplay's <keyword id="22420646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Music-of-the-Spheres" source="keywords">Music Of The Spheres</keyword> World Tour 2025 in India”. The ticketing platform added that they had provided details of all resellers that had caught their sight, including independent individuals reselling tickets for Coldplay’s tour across social media platforms such as Instagram (where A had purchased their tickets from) and WhatsApp. Not just these small resellers, but multinational ticket exchange and <keyword id="23273060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticket-resale" source="keywords">ticket resale</keyword> platform <keyword id="23278340" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="viagogo" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="viagogo" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="viagogo">Viagogo</keyword>, and its parent company StubHub Holdings have also been served legal notices by Zomato Live and BMS. While Zomato Live has not commented on if the tickets purchased via Viagogo or such scalpers would be canceled or not, it is no secret that hours after the tickets were shown as sold out on these official sites, tickets for both Diljit and Coldplay’s concert were available on Viagogo, albeit at sky-high prices. Even as of today, you can buy tickets for Coldplay’s concert in Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on January 19th, 2025 on Viagogo. The catch? You should be willing to empty your pockets. Consider this. Tickets for level 2 stand E were priced at Rs 9,000 on BMS. On Viagogo, the tickets for this specific category start at Rs 54,431, and go as high as Rs 1,89,512. The tickets A bought were also originally priced at Rs 6,450. But on Viagogo, the starting range is Rs 31,288, going up to Rs 1,13,207. Talk about earning 5x-6x returns! In comparison, the ticket prices offered by these Instagram reseller accounts, also termed as scalpers, might look benign, even generous. But at the end of the day, scalpers are also looking to rake in profits, which they earn by selling these tickets in bulk i.e. lots of 5-10 tickets at once. After all, who is attending concerts alone? The slim margins on individual tickets are well cushioned by the extra bucks brought in by the higher quantities of tickets sold at once. In A’s case, the scalper demanded a 20% advance for booking confirmation. Others ask for as much as 50% of the booking amount. Once that’s done, the customer would get an e-ticket on their registered email ID, which will mention their seat number and booking ID. Then, once this customer pays the remaining amount, the physical tickets will be dispatched to their registered address. Mind you, these physical tickets are important. Just e-tickets won't make the cut for both Coldplay and Diljit. You would not be able to enter the venue if you don't have this physical ticket or a wearable band. So, if the tickets are not delivered to your place before the concert, you’d be left stranded, even after paying all that money. Also, dont be surprised with a constant, relentless barrage of messages and calls, if you so much as just inquire about the tickets.
