<ul><li>The government began the selection process for the next Chief of Army Staff, as <keyword id="3969981" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Bipin-Rawat">General Bipin Rawat</keyword> is set to superannuate in December 2019. </li><li>Eastern Army Commander <keyword id="6889732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lt-gen-mukund-naravane">Lt Gen Mukund Naravane</keyword> and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh are in the list of five senior officers under consideration. </li><li>Lt Gen Naravane will be the senior most officer in the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> once General Rawat’s term ends. </li></ul>The government has started the process to select the next Chief of Army Staff as General Bipin Rawat will retire superannuate in December this year. The government is considering five officers in the army for the job, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/vetting-process-for-next-army-chief-begins/articleshow/69951737.cms">as per reports</a> The Eastern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Mukund Naravane is the senior most officer in the race. He is considered top contender for the job as he was given <a href="https://nenow.in/north-east-news/navarane-slated-take-eastern-command-seen-next-army-chief.html">charge of the Eastern Army</a>, in September 2018. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Naravane was commissioned into the 7th battalion The Sikh Light Infantry in 1980. Counter insurgency specialist Well known as a counter insurgency specialist in the Army, Naravane, in his 37 years of service has served in many Command and Staff appointments, in Jammu &amp; Kashmir and Northeast. He was also a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPFK) in Sri Lanka. Naravane’s shift to the Eastern Army came at a crucial time when insurgents were <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2018/10/01/naravane-takes-charge-of-eastern-command-as-army-faces-credibility-crisis.html">reportedly</a> regrouping in neighbouring Myanmar. He was given the charge probably because Naravane was the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) in Nagaland --- which looks after the Indo-Myanmar border. He had also commanded the eastern brigade of the infantry. Naravane commanding the Eastern Command became more significant because he commanded the Strikes Corps of the Indian Army and was the <keyword id="32733" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Defence">Indian Defence</keyword> Attache in Myanmar. He was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army <keyword id="695871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Training-Command">Training Command</keyword> prior to heading the Eastern Command. The General has served as an instructor at the Army War College, Mhow. He was decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2019, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2017, and the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2015. The General holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from Chennai University, an M.Phil in Defence and Management Studies from DAVV, Indore. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. from Punjabi University, Patiala.

Twenty Indian Army men, including officers, were killed in an unprecedented violent clash with Chinese People's <keyword id="9413941" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="liberation-army-troops">Liberation Army troops</keyword> at <keyword id="9241086" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword> in Eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the Indian Army said on Tuesday. Sources said that the death toll is likely to go up as many soldiers have been brutally injured. Indian Army issued a statement on Tuesday night wherein it said, "17 Indian troops who were critically injured in the line of duty at the standoff location and exposed to sub-zero temperatures in the high altitude terrain have succumbed to their injuries, taking the total that were killed in action to 20." The force further stated that Indian and Chinese troops have disengaged in the Galwan area where they had earlier "clashed on the night of June 15 and June 16, 2020." The force further stated that Indian Army is firmly committed to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation. An unprecedented violent clash took place in Galwan Valley at the Line of Actual Control with Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers attacking a small group of Indian Army men on patrol, resulting in fatalities which included the commanding officer of the Indian Army. The intensity of the fight increased with reinforcements from the both sides and it continued until late night till the time they got exhausted. Many Indian soldiers went missing during the fight. Early on Tuesday morning, both Indian and Chinese top military officials rushed and called for a meeting to defuse the situation. These are the first casualties faced by the Indian Army in clash with the People's Liberation Army since 1975 when an Indian patrol was ambushed by Chinese troops in <keyword id="46408" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>. Earlier in the day, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the prevailing situation in Eastern Ladakh. Singh met Modi after he held a meeting with External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, and the three service chiefs in the South Block here to review the situation. Singh asked the service chiefs to explain the current situation in Galwan Valley and what course of action could be taken from hereafter diplomatically. Indian Army Chief General <keyword id="7735201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manoj-Mukund-Naravane">Manoj Mukund Naravane</keyword> was to visit Kashmir on Tuesday morning but following Monday night's developments at the LAC, it was cancelled. Sources in Indian Army stated: "The Defence Minister reviewed the current operational situation in Eastern Ladakh, consequent to Monday's violent faceoff on the Line of Actual Control along with the Chief of Defence Staff and the three service chiefs. <keyword id="9413940" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-external-affairs">The External Affairs</keyword> Minister was also present during the meeting." It is yet to be ascertained as to how many Chinese soldiers were killed in the clash, but the MEA spokesperson has stated that "both sides suffered casualties". On Monday, Brigade Commander and company level talks happened in Eastern Ladakh between India and China. The talks were happening near patrolling point 14 near the mouth of Galwan Valley and patrolling point 17 in the Hot Springs area.
