Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the second leg of his campaign for Bihar assembly elections, raking up the <keyword id="6354931" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ayodhya">Ayodhya</keyword> issue and urging the people to defeat the opposition which had ushered in a "<keyword id="3362535" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jungle-raj">jungle raj</keyword>" in the state and embezzled funds meant for development schemes. Invoking the imagery of Goddess Sita and her father Janaka, the king of Mithila of which this north Bihar town became the capital later on, Modi said those who used to taunt the BJP over the delay in construction of Ram temple were now forced to applause. "I am happy to be here, in the birth place of Mother Sita. Construction of temple at Ayodhya has also begun. Those siyasi log (political opponents) who used to taunt us with the question what is the date (for commencement of construction), have now been forced to clap in applause," Modi told a rally here. The prime minister, who shared the stage with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, lavished praise on the latter, calling him the "bhaavi mukhyamantri" (prospective CM) and crediting him with Bihar's economic turnaround. "The people of Bihar have made up their mind to inflict yet another defeat on those responsible for the 'jungle raj' where crime graph had soared to an extent that living a normal life became difficult for the common people, our mothers and sisters," Modi said in an obvious attack on the RJD-Congress combine, without mentioning either by name. "They committed financial irregularities in the name of waiving farm loans. They took bribes to give jobs. The NDA stands for development. Beware of those who are greedily eyeing the funds earmarked for progress," said Modi. He said those who were in power before the NDA government was formed were so obsessed with their "commission" that they never cared about connectivity for regions like Mithila. A project like Kosi Mahasetu could be completed only when the NDA was in power both in the state and the Centre, he added. The prime minister, who spoke at length about the measures taken by the Centre for the development of Mithila as well as those proposed for the future, sought to strike a chord with the local populace by recalling legendary Maithili poet Vidyapati and uttering phrases in the local language. He also made references to "paan" (betel leaves) and "makhaan" (fox nut) cultivated in the area in abundance. In a deft attempt at reaching out to the lower castes, Modi also paid tributes to Dalit icon Baba Chauharmal. Noting that voting was underway in several assembly segments in the first phase of elections, Modi urged the people to stay safe and take precautions in view of the COVID 19 pandemic while exercising their franchise. Modi kicks off second-leg of Bihar campaign — rakes up issues of Ayodhya and 'jungle raj' at rally

Attributing the party's victory in Bihar and in various assembly bypolls to the people's faith in <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-narendra-modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, the BJP leaders on Tuesday said the voters of Bihar have rejected dynasty, casteism and politics of appeasement. The party leaders and ministers also credited the victory in Bihar to the Modi government's success in navigating the country during the COVID-19 crisis. Describing the BJP's victory as the reimposition of faith in the Modi government's pro-poor policies, the party president J P Nadda said the entire nation has reposed its trust in the welfare work done by the Centre, as shown by results of the Bihar assembly elections and of by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Manipur and Telangana. "In the difficult times of the COVID-19 epidemic, when the country was struggling with crisis and challenges, Modi government took all possible steps to help the poor and the needy and provided them free ration and financial assistance as well. I thank all the brothers and sisters of the state from the core of my heart for re-choosing development, progress and good governance. I especially thank the youth and women who formed the NDA government with absolute majority by choosing security and a bright future in Bihar," he said. Another senior party leader and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the victory in Bihar is a win of the NDA's commitment to good governance and development and expressed his gratitude to the people of the state. BJP declares victory in Bihar Election 2020 before final count with Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah and other senior leaders thanking voters

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Friday raised the issue of deadly <keyword id="9415025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley-clash">Galwan Valley clash</keyword> between India and China troops, scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir state's special status, and even the <keyword id="4650805" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pulwama-Attack">Pulwama attack</keyword> in order to woo Bihar voters ahead of the Assembly elections. Addressing his first-ever rally in Sasaram's Biada Maidan ahead of the elections, Modi said: "The sons of Bihar lost their lives in the Galwan Valley for the sake of the Tricolour and ensured that Mother India's head is held high. Bihar's jawans were also martyred in the Pulwama attack (in February 2019). I bow my head at their feet and pay my respects." Many Bihar Regiment jawans had bravely fought and laid down their lives in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on June 15. He then referred to Congress leaders' recent statement that it will bring back <keyword id="405091" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Article-370">Article 370</keyword> in erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, which his government had scrapped on August 5 last year. "After saying this, they dare to seek votes from Bihar. Is it not an insult of Bihar? The state that sends its sons and daughters to the borders in order to protect the country." Earlier, Modi began his speech by paying respects to two Bihar leaders who recently passed away -- Ram Vilas Paswan and RJD's Raghuvansh Prasad Singh. The latter had resigned from the party before his death. Taking a potshot at the Rashtriya Janata Dal without naming them, he said that those who once ruled Bihar are now again looking at the "developing state with their greedy eyes". But Bihar, he added, would not forget who pushed them back. He brought up the issue of Bihar's worsening law and order and corruption in the past, in a seeming reference to Lalu Prasad's rule and the fodder scam. Asserting that Bihar was well on its way to development, he said that the era of 'lantern', the electoral symbol of the RJD, was over. He also pointed to the opposition to the three central agricultural laws and alleged that the same stemmed from efforts to "protect the middlemen" just like the opposition "was speaking their language" during the Rafale controversy. Attacking the RJD and the Congress, he said that as the Gujarat Chief Minister, he witnessed how the Centre then "wasted" 10 years of Bihar after their defeat. He added that to make India self-reliant, Bihar needs to vote for the National Democratic Alliance. Modi praised the steps taken by the Bihar government to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the state. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also present on the occasion, was full of praise for Modi's "leadership". Kumar said that if his government returned to power in Bihar, it would focus on the availability of irrigation facilities and benefits of latest technology in every village. Multiple stages are set up during Bihar's electoral rallies by the NDA to ensure physical distancing, with efforts to arrange chairs on the podiums at a distance for the crowd. Modi raises Galwan Valley clash, Article 370 and Pulwama attack in first Bihar rally

In the first term of the Modi government too, Paswan held the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Paswan is a eight-time Lok Sabha MP as well as a former Rajya Sabha MP. Paswan is the president of the Lok Janshakti Party. It was reported that his son Chirag Paswan, who is a MP from the Jamui constituency of Bihar could be the one to hold a ministerial position as the Modi government comes back to power for the second time. Shankar Sharma, stock market guru, told ET Now that the near-term outlook looks grim for India along with other emerging markets. 
 
"The market will start figuring out those outcomes and I think those are not looking good at all. Despite 282 seats, the government has not been able to push through a lot of its agenda in Parliament," said Sharma, adding this will dent BJP in 2019 general elections. 
 
The stock guru said so because Bihar and Uttar Pradesh comprise around 100 seats. 
 
"Based on this outcome and possibly that of UP in 2017, it is highly certain that the BJP would not get to 282 number in 2019. It might stop at 250, might stop at 240, might stop at 200," Sharma added. 
 
"Even other states where the BJP have won almost everything -- for example Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and MP - are unlikely to be maintained at those levels," he said.

Bihar elections results also raised worries about Modi’s ability to pass key reforms like GST. 
 
Sharma said the emerging markets overall are in a great deal of strife. 
 
“Emerging markets appear to be in a terrible shape. If you talk to fund managers managing emerging market money, they will tell you that they are faced with huge redemptions, which again is translating into negative flows from countries like India. From here on till the end of the year, things look pretty grim," he said.

BJP’s defeat in Bihar elections may resound till 2019!

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nitish+Kumar">Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar</a> took offence at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Prime Minister Narendra </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Modi</a>’s ‘DNA’ remark and has asked him to withdraw it. 
 
Kumar said Modi’s remark was an insult to large section of the people of the state and beyond. 
 
While addressing a rally in Muzaffarpur on July 25, Modi remembered the way Kumar had invited him to dinner and later cancelled the invitation. 
 
Modi said that Kumar had not only disrespected him but also a 'mahadalit' like former Chief Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=jitan+ram+manjhi">Jitan Ram Manjhi</a>. 
 
"There seems to be some problem in his DNA because the DNA of democracy is not like that. In democracy you respect even your political rivals," Modi had said at the rally. 
 
Today, Kumar wrote an open letter to Modi, which was released on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=facebook">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=twitter">Twitter</a>. 
 
"Most of us feel these statements have gone beyond questioning my own descent. They have disrespected the lineage of our people and denigrated the great legacy of the state," the letter stated. 
 
"This also gives credence to the feeling that perhaps you and your party hold a prejudice against the people of Bihar. I wonder how come the gravity of such statements repeatedly miss your alert conscience," said Kumar. 
 
Kumar said Modi’s comment was unbecoming of the office he holds. 
 
"I have no doubt that this gesture of yours (withdrawing the DNA remark) would go a long way in assuaging the sentiments of people and would further enhance the respect people have for you," he said. 
 
Modi is likely to address a rally in Gaya on August 9. 
 
Kumar also reminded Modi that this was not the first time such remarks were made by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> leaders. 
 
"Earlier, your colleague and BJP leader Nitin Gadkari had said that casteism is in the DNA of Bihar. Interestingly, these are the same people who reposed their faith in you and contributed towards electing you to the highest office of the country with an overwhelming majority," he added.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar raises objection on Modi’s ‘DNA’ remark, writes open letter to him

Forming an alliance with his rival for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/JDU-wins-Bihar-Elections-2015/articleshow/49710372.cms">Bihar elections 2015</a> worked in favour of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lalu+prasad+yadav">Lalu Prasad Yadav</a>.

Prasad, who proved to be a crowd and vote magnate during elections, is going to be the kingmaker. 
 In contrast to 22 seats in 2010, Prasad’s RJD in <keyword id="2857351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-Elections-2015">Bihar elections 2015</keyword> won 80 seats. 
 Despite having the upper hand, Prasad has let Kumar be the <keyword id="587316" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister-of-Bihar">chief minister of Bihar</keyword>, backing JDU like never before. 
 
Not only this, the RJD boss helped the Grand Alliance consolidate the OBC vote-bank in its favour by attacking RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for his suggestion for reviewing the reservation policy. 
 
The BJP’s poll plank of Prasad’s ‘jungle raj’ backfired too and the RJD chief galvanised its votes to JD (U) candidates too. 
 
The BJP, which began its poll pitch on development and economic growth, was under pressure and deviated to caste politics. It tried to stop RJP’s juggernaut by giving tickets to 22 Yadav candidates but it failed as well. 
 
Now it is to see in which direction the Grand Alliance will steer Bihar to. Will the kingmaker return with his scams as well? How will be the favour returned to his family including his wife Rabri Devi, sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap and his daughter Misa Bharti, who campaigned for the elections? Time will tell.

It was said Kishor decided the resource allocation, strategies and alliances of the party. That relationship soured in January 2020 and he was expelled from the Janata Dal (U) party. This was after he criticized Kumar, the party head’s stand in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (2019). In 2017 Punjab assembly elections, Prashant Kishor helped the Congress candidate Amarinder Singh win the elections and become the CM after the party had lost two consecutive elections in the state. He was also employed by the Congress party for UP election campaign in 2017. This time he had failed but he blamed Rahul Gandhi’s failing image for it. In 2019, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy designated Kishor’s organization as his campaign partner and his party won 151 out of 175 seats. On February 2020, the DMK chief M K Stalin declared that Prashant Kishor had been signed up as the election strategist for the party for assembly elections in 2021. Political circles say that he would now focus on the Bihar and Bengal elections next.

Whether the alliance of Janata Parivar will make sense to people or not, is never the question. It is all about who has better reach and communication mechanism with the voters; and who can influence the voters to choose them over the others. The elections come at a time when the BJP’s popularity is seen declining in most crucial quarters. The large gap between promises and performance is seen as the most important reason for this. Though there was political unrest in Bihar in the recent times; there has also been an increasing anger among farmers about the least support they have got from the central government.
 The hurried return of <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> after unseating Jiten Ram Manjhi is bound to have its repercussions on the current results. Nitish suffered a humiliating defeat in the last polls despite having delivered on ‘progress’. This was seen as voters’ reaction to his snapping of ties with his longstanding association with the BJP. 

	With the 2010 elections, political analysts had concluded that the heavily-castetist Bihar is finally moving away from being a society that voted a particular caste to power, and not for better standard of lives. The BJP-JD(U) alliance was some sort of a rainbow of hope for the state that had somewhat tread the path of scams during the time of Lalu Prasad Yadav.
 

	JD(U) – BJP had won 206 seats out of 243 total seats. Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) alliance was reduced to nothing with a loss of face, facing complete rejection at 25 seats only. But this was in 2010, even before the rest of India had begun to even speak the language of development. Did caste get a boot in these elections? Did Bihar show the tendency right then? The victory in this election is crucial for the Centre for various reasons. It will provide some kind of reassurance to the central government to keep the tempo up about Modi magic still being alive. Else, a lot of things can change at the Centre.
 

	The BJP desperately needs this victory to up its numbers in Rajya Sabha where its developmental agenda alone is not cutting the ice. Since the party has no big numbers, its bills are taking the ordinance route and this can be perceived as a serious setback for the BJP’s assurance to keep up the values of democracy.
 

	Bihar polls would also ensure the atmosphere is set for the UP polls that are due to take place in 2017. Would this mean the greatest political indicator of our times has already been perceived political analysts? The vital signs are all over the place to affirm this indicator.
 

	What’s with the Janata Parivar merger? Though secular forces all over the country desire the coming together of secular forces, the NDA victory of 2014 bagging 31 out of 40 seats actually acted like a glue for Lalu and Nitish to come together. An unholy alliance, as it may be termed, the coming together of two contradictory and different forces should be tested against time depending on whether the voter places trust in them or not. Bihar, right now, is a cauldron. Only, we will know what's cooking in a few months.

Bihar is going to tip India’s political scale

With each passing day, BJP’s stance on orthodox Hinduism is taking a toll on the party’s reputation. While Prime Minister Modi is keeping no stones unturned to bring in investments, conservative vision of the RSS and intolerance to other religions has taken an ugly turn. 
 
A few days back, a lynching incident resulting in death of a senior citizen in Uttar Pradesh over alleged beef eating have become an international issue where ‘freedom’ in India’s largest democracy is at stake. Yesterday, an independent member of legislative assembly in Jammu and Kashmir was mishandled by BJP members in the assembly because he had organized a beef festival to move over the crisis of conservatives. 
 
Since then, everyone in the country was waiting for Prime Minister to speak on the issue, but he didn’t. Today, he finally had to break his silence after Lalu Prasad’s beef remark. Lalu Prasad Yadav had said that Hindus too eat beef. 
 
Modi has launched a blistering attack on RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, saying his beef eating remark is an "abuse" and "huge insult" to Yaduvanshis (Yadav clan) and asked people of Bihar to reject the grand secular alliance (Lalu and Nitish) warning it will bring jungle raj 2". He earlier mentioned that Nitish’s regime as Jungle Raj 1. Modi has also scoffed at Lalu's explanation that he made the beef remarks under the influence of some "shaitan" (devil). 
 
He said, "I wonder the devil got only his (Lalu) body to enter. I want to know how the shaitan got the address (of Lalu). The devil got no other body in entire Bihar, India and the whole world except that of his. And he also welcomed the devil as if some relative has come.” 
 
Addressing rallies in Munger, Begusarai and Samastipur, Modi castigated the RJD chief over his 'Hindus also eat beef' remark. 
 
"What all is he saying. What all Yadavs eat? Whatever position Lalu rose to, it was because of these Yaduvanshis and he insulted them. What kind of abuses you are hurling at them. Is it not an insult of Yadavs and Bihar? Do not humiliate the Yaduvanshis so much? Laluji, these Yaduvanshis helped you to come to power," said Modi. 
 
Insisting that Lalu cannot absolve himself of his beef remark, he said,"People of Bihar have to find out why the devil came to Lalu only. What were his bad habits due to which it happened. Do we have place for such people in Bihar. 
Now, all we want to tell dear Modi is: Sir, we sure wanted your remark on the beef and lynching issue, but a considerate one. Election politics is what we expect least from the man, who we chose as the head of the nation. Or do we?

Yadav has proved time and again how greatly he values the country laughing (at him) rather than governing it and his latest attempt at a comedy sketch underlines this very mission- ‘Hasega India, tabhi toh badhega India.’

Yadav took on his chief opponent in the upcoming state assembly elections and started off by mocking Modi’s inefficient public speaking skills, which makes whatever he says unclear to the ears of the audience. 
 
Not one to merely point out inadequacies, Yadav offered a piece of unsolicited life-changing advice to Modi as well. 
 
“Arrey Modiji, theek se bolo, nahi toh nas fat jayega” 
(Narendra Modi ji, please talk properly, otherwise the veins on your neck will break) 
 
In order to make his point, Yadav advances to mimic the exact way Modi announced the package, replete with staccato bursts of speech accompanied with long pauses while making pompous promises. A perfectionist, he also keyed in Modi’s famed hand movements. Add to that, Yadav’s fitting comparison of Modi announcing the package to an auctioneer. 
 
(A day earlier, Narendra Modi dramatically made the announcement of the package while interacting with cheering crowds and asked. “How much do you want? Rs.50,000 crores, 60,000, 70,000, 75,000, 80,000? I am announcing a package of Rs. 1.25 lakh crores.") 
 
 
 
To say that he was absolutely accurate in his mimicry would be a great insult to his majesty’s skills. With this sketch, Yadav unknowingly set a standard in the world of slapstick comedy that even the best comedians will never be destined to attain.

The Imitation Game: Lalu mimics Narendra Modi, does it better than the PM himself

Nearly seven lakh voters in Bihar used the 'none of the above' or NOTA option in the assembly elections, according to latest figures. So far, results of 202 seats out of the total 243 have been announced. According to figures released by the EC, 6,89,135 people or 1.69 per cent of the voters so far have opted for the option whereby they preferred not to vote for any candidate while exercising their democratic right. The 'NOTA' option on electronic voting machines, introduced in 2013, has its own symbol -- a ballot paper with a black cross across it. After the Supreme Court order in September, 2013, the EC added the NOTA button on the EVMs as the last option on the voting panel. Prior to the apex court order, those not inclined to vote for any candidate had the option of filling, what is popularly called, 'form 49-O'. But filling the form at the polling station under Rule 49-O of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, compromised the secrecy of the voter. The Supreme Court had, however, refused to direct the Election Commission to hold fresh polls if the majority of the electorate exercises the NOTA option while voting. There were several seats in Bihar where NOTA option got more votes than winning margin of candidates.
