<ul><li>As the year of most IPOs in India comes to an end, another one kicks off.</li><li>The excitement for IPOs, particularly from retail investors, is likely to be a lot sober in 2022, says <keyword id="1038160" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-saraf" source="Orion">Ajay Saraf</keyword>, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities.</li><li>That would mean companies would be less confident in demanding high valuations, leaving more profit on the table for small investors in good companies.</li><li>Check out our <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bi-newsletter">weekly explainers</a> on the hottest topics and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/newsletters_signup.cms">sign up</a> if you like them</li></ul>The bull run in Indian equities that continued from mid-2020 up until late 2021 had drawn in hordes of companies, including the likes of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, <keyword id="6376684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nykaa" source="Orion">Nykaa</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, who wanted to make the best of the brimming optimism and get the best price for their shares. Millions of retail investors wanted a part of the boom in Asia’s best performing stock market, and a lot of IPOs benefited from the frenzy. That kind of unbridled enthusiasm is unlikely in 2022, according to Ajay Saraf, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities in an interview to Business Insider. Saraf is not alone. Srinivas Rao Ravuri, chief investment officer at PGIM India Mutual Fund also <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/daily-voice-2022-would-be-a-challenging-year-for-investors-and-companies-planning-ipos-says-srinivas-rao-ravuri-of-pgim-india-mf-7856261.html">reportedly</a> believes that 2022 would be a challenging year for investors and companies planning IPOs. But that’s not entirely a bad thing. If the cautious mood makes good companies, who need to raise money, tone down the pricing it may leave more profit on the table for small investors. There were 63 initial public offerings (IPO) in 2021 and they raised a cumulative <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/list-of-upcoming-ipo-in-year-2022-in-india-ags-transact-adani-wilmar-prudent-corporate-advisory/slidelist/88492728.cms">₹1.18 lakh crore from investors</a> [hyperlink]. global interest rates, tapering, central bank prioritising inflation over growth and increasing interest rate earlier than expected, which might make the market volatile and IPOs may not be as smooth and great as 2021,” said Saraf. If the market mood is uncertain, then the companies planning IPOs are likely to be less confident in seeking high valuations. Startups like <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> are already waiting patiently before they launch the IPO to get the best price. Founder Upasana Taku told Business Insider that she is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/mobikwik-founder-says-they-are-not-selling-any-shares-in-the-ipo/articleshow/88392998.cms">waiting for the market conditions to improve</a> even though she has the SEBI approval to launch the IPO. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has said in the past that he has never invested in an IPO. “The idea of saying the best place in the world where I can put money is something where all the selling, and their commissions are higher, the animal spirits are rising, that’s going to be better than a thousand other things I can where there is no similar selling enthusiasm, and the desire to get the deal done and earn some commissions. That’s the best thing to buy in a single day?,” Buffett <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/05/06/warren-buffett-on-why-hes-never-bought-an-ipo.html">asked in an interview</a> in May 2019. In 2022, the animal spirits will be lower i.e. the emotional trigger for investments will be contained and therefore the valuations may be cheaper. “Valuation will become a bit more in favour of investors and that is the trend which we will see (next year),” said Saraf. If the IPOs are priced cheaper, it is likely that the headroom for profit is higher for investors, particularly for those who invest for the longer term. While this is general wisdom, it may so happen that the excitement may be lesser for some companies and higher for others. “Consumer tech and BFSI will lead the overall IPOs in terms of sector concentration in 2022,” said Saraf. Now, the ₹40,000 crore ($5.7 billion) company, which has a monopoly in ticket bookings and catering for the Indian Railways, plans to split the stock. A stock split is the process of reducing the price, in turn, giving the existing shareholders more shares in the company. Investors expect that the economy will open up, people will travel more, as the vaccinations pick up pace and the pandemic peters out. The recovery is already visible in its earnings of the last four quarters. In its report in July 2021, broking firm Anand Rathi said the shares could worth ₹2,850 apiece in the next one year. <div type="image" title="IRCTC chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="84967721" hostid="261"></div> IRCTC is a central public sector enterprise operating in 4 segments, namely internet ticketing, catering, packaged drinking water and travel &amp; tourism. It plans to commission four new bottling plants this year and that would mean more supply to meet the demand as it revives. Recently, in e-catering, the company has partnered with private tech platforms like travel portal Ixigo and payments startup MobiKwik to name a few. “Going forward, management expects to reach the pre COVID level very soon after the resumption of Tejas Express, increase in convenience revenue to 25%, capacity expansion of Rail Neer and the impact of price hike announced in catering will play out by then,” the Anand Rathi report said. According to BSE data, the shares allocated for the Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) bid for 2,013 crore shares. This is 51 times higher than 38.8 crore Zomato had reserved for this segment. The shares allocated for non-institutional investors were subscribed by 32 times and shares meant for employees were subscribed by 62%. Retail Individual Investors (<keyword id="106115" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rii">RII</keyword>) subscribed to 96 crore shares, which was seven times of the issue size of 12.9 crore shares. Here’s how you can do it through Zerodha’s Kite application, which is meant for trading stocks and commodities. <ul><li>Login to the mobile app and select the IPO option under console. If you’re logging in through desktop, then go to console -- portfolio -- IPO.</li><li>You will find a list of IPOs that are open for investment. Select the IPO you want to invest in.</li><li>Enter your UPI ID from the BHIM app. Ensure your UPI ID is mapped to your personal bank account. </li><li>Select investor type for your application. </li><li>Enter the lot size (number of shares required to buy in one lot) announced by the company.</li><li>Tick on the cut off price for more chances of allotment of shares as it indicates investor’s willingness to subscribe to shares at any price discovered within the price band. Cut off price is the issue price.</li><li>Retail investors can bid for three lots. </li><li>After this step, click on the check box to confirm and submit.</li><li>The last step is to accept the mandate request for proceeding with IPO on your BHIM UPI app. Once you accept the mandate, the amount of funds for IPO will be blocked till the allotment. </li><li>Now wait till the allotment date of shares to see if you have received the lot size you bid for.</li></ul>Meanwhile you can also invest in Zomato’s pre application offer through Paytm Money Paytm Money has for the first time allowed users to apply for an IPO before the actual IPO opening. This feature is built to help a large proportion of investors who do not trade actively and may miss out during market hours. Basically, a retail investor can plan an IPO order 24x7 on days when a pre-open IPO is enabled. Pre-IPO feature is currently live on Paytm Money’s mobile app. The process to apply in a pre IPO is similar to that of other trading platforms. You just need to fill your investor details, lot size and accept the mandate on BHIM app. Another way to invest is through your bank. This option is generally available between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the bank’s website.
