The Ministry of Labour and Employment recently directed the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (<keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords">EPFO</keyword>) to ensure the activation of UAN (<keyword id="20789489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="universal-account-number" source="keywords">Universal Account Number</keyword>) via Aadhar-based OTP. The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. Notably, Aadhaar-based verification eliminates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity. In the first stage, all employers must complete <keyword id="24089674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UAN-activation" source="keywords">UAN activation</keyword> through Aadhar-based OTP for all employees who've joined the company in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. Starting with their latest recruits, employers will have to finish this process for all their employees. As per the budget announcements, the government will implement 3 schemes for 'Employment Linked Incentive' as part of the Prime Minister's package. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. In September this year, EPFO added 18.81 lakh members, registering a 9.33% YoY growth.

India currently faces a shortage of 2.41 million skilled workers in the telecom sector in the 5G era, which is forecast to jump by 3.8 times by 2030, a report showed on Friday. The country will require 22 million skilled workers in 5G-focused industries by 2025, in areas such as cloud computing, robots and the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the key challenges is that only 40 per cent of India's graduates in computer science, IT, and math are employable in the technology sector due to the mismatch between academic requirements and industry demands, according to the report by the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC), launched in association with enterprise decision-making platform Draup at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2023 here. The number of employed talent in the Indian telecom industry is currently 11.59 million, with 2.95 million corporate talent and 8.24 million blue-collar talent. According to the report, India is the only country expected to have a skilled labour surplus, with 1.3 million workers in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector by 2030. "In anticipation of the upcoming 6G era, our focus remains on aligning our skilling initiatives with cutting-edge technologies, ensuring a workforce ready for the future of telecom," said Atul Tiwari, Secretary, <keyword id="2485309" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-skill-development" source="Orion">Ministry of Skill Development</keyword> and Entrepreneurship. The report, titled '<keyword id="19288877" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-talent" source="Orion">Telecom Talent</keyword> in 5G Era: Demand Supply Skill Gap Report 2023-24', highlighted that across 15 top streams, network operation and maintenance and project engineering have the most corporate talent, while network operation and maintenance and sales and distribution - service segment have the most blue-collar talent. According to Arvind Bali, CEO, TSSC, the telecom sector is the third-largest industry in India that accounts for roughly 6.5 per cent of all FDI inflow and also by 2027, the country is anticipated to account for 11 per cent of all 5G subscriptions worldwide. "India has a good chance to close the growing demand-supply gap by 2030 with the proper reskilling and hiring strategies that target adjacent talent in tier 2 and 3 cities and university supply," said Bali. With the help of AI, even more powerful 6G network technologies will emerge in the future, the report mentioned.

Total employment generated by nine select sectors stood at 3.10 crore in the July-September 2021 quarter, which is 2 lakh more than that of the April-June period, according to a quarterly employment survey by the <keyword id="126926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="labour-ministry" source="Orion">labour ministry</keyword> released on Monday. The quarterly employment survey (QES) report released by Union Labour Minister <keyword id="1850634" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhupender-yadav" source="Orion">Bhupender Yadav</keyword> said that total employment numbers in the nine select sectors were 3.08 crore in April-June 2021. The rise shows improvement in economic activities after lifting of lockdown restrictions by states to curb the spread of deadly virus after the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country in April 2021. These nine sectors are Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transport, Education, Health, Accommodation and Restaurant, IT/ BPO and <keyword id="6354241" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="Orion">Financial Services</keyword>, accounting for a majority of the total employment in the non-farm establishments. This is the second report in the series. First report was for April-June 2021. The study covers establishment with 10 or more employees. Releasing the report, Yadav stated that these studies will aid government to achieve its mission of last-mile delivery and evidence-based policy making for workers. Total employment in nine select sectors rises to 3.10 crore in July-September 2021, reveals Labour Ministry report

NEW DELHI: Some of the essential services related to banking, transportation, railways and electricity are likely to be impacted during a two-day nationwide strike called by a joint forum of central trade unions beginning Monday. Talking to PTI, All Indian Trade Union Congress General Secretary <keyword id="366518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amarjeet-kaur" source="Orion">Amarjeet Kaur</keyword> said, "We are expecting participation of over 20 crore formal and informal workers with mass mobilisation of workers across the country during the strike on March 28 and 29 to protest against government policies." She said that the strike is expected to hit the rural parts also, where informal workers of farming and other sectors will join the protest. The strike notices were given by workers' unions of various sectors such as coal, steel, oil, telecom, postal, income tax, copper, banks and insurance. Unions in railways and defence sector will carry out mass mobilization in support of the strike at several places, the joint forum said. The unions' demands include scrapping of the proposed changes in labour laws, privatisation of any form and the national monetisation pipeline. Increased allocation of wages under MNREGA (<keyword id="1194612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahatma-gandhi-rural-employment-guarantee-act" source="Orion">Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act</keyword>) and regularisation of contract workers are also part of their demands. Workers of roadways, transport and electricity departments have also decided to join the strike in spite of the impending threat of ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance Act) which is likely to be imposed in Haryana and Chandigarh, the joint forum said in a statement. Trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC are part of the joint forum. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="6375040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-ministry" source="Orion">power ministry</keyword> on Sunday advised all the state-run utilities and other agencies to be on high alert and ensure round-the-clock electricity supply and stability of the national grid. "The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have called for a nationwide strike with effect from 06:00 hrs of March 28 to 06:00 hrs of March 30, 2022," an advisory issued by the power ministry said. The advisory has been issued to all states, central public sector undertakings, central electricity authority, national load dispatch centre and regional load dispatch centres. In the interest of the consumers of electricity, it is advised that all the power utilities shall take necessary measures to ensure round-the-clock functioning of the electricity grid and availability of all plants, transmission lines and substations, the ministry said, adding that all regional/state control room executives should be vigilant and on high alert. The ministry also suggested measures to be taken to ensure secure and reliable grid operations. Shutdown activities planned during March 28-29 may be rescheduled to suitable future dates to the extent possible, it said and asked all concerned officials to ensure close supervision of their regional network/control area. Also, manpower may be deployed at all critical sub-stations/power station 24X7 to handle any emergency situation, it said. Power supply to those engaged in essential services such as hospitals, defence, and railways must be ensured, it added and suggested setting up of a 24x7 control room for information dissemination and handling any kind of contingency. A number of public sector banks, including country's largest lender SBI, have said that their services may get impacted to a limited extent due to the strike. SBI said it has made necessary arrangements to ensure normal functioning in its branches and offices during the strike. "It is likely that work at our bank may be impacted, to a limited extent, by the strike," SBI said. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment said that the bill will ensure ‘Right to Sustenance’ regardless of the wage bracket, across verticals. The move will benefit 500 million workers across the country. “This Bill provides for monthly wage holders to get their salary on time and all sections of society which were outside the ambit of the minimum wages will now get the right to minimum wages,” <keyword id="258592" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Kumar-Gangwar">Santosh Kumar Gangwar</keyword>, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment<a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/lok-sabha-passes-wage-code-bill-to-ensure-minimum-wage-for-workers/article28761226.ece"> said</a> in the Parliament. The bill will revoke the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Wages Act, 1936, the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976. What amendments would the bill entail? The bill will formulate laws to increase <a href="https://www.prsindia.org/billtrack/code-wages-2019">provision of minimum wages</a> to employees across sectors. As of now, the Minimum Wages Act and Payment of Wages Act is applicable to workers below a certain wage bracket. This will also help workers of unorganised sectors, receive timely payments. As per the amendment, the minimum wage for farmers shall be revised every two years while the wages should be revised every four years for other workers. What are the provisions for minimum wages of employees? The minimum wages will be set by the government according to skills and difficulty of tasks. The employers will not be able to set wages which are less than the base that will be set by the government. How will it work? The government will set a ‘floor wage,’ according to the employee’s standard of living. And the minimum wage shall be higher than the floor wage value, set by the central government. How will it affect overtime policy and bonuses? The government will define the minimum number of hours that will constitute a normal working day. And if the employees work more than that, they will be given overtime wages — which is at least twice of the normal wage. The bill does not have provisions for bonuses like travel allowance and others. What will be the mode of payment of salaries and wage period? The employers can pay their employees either daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly via cheque, currency notes, bank transfer or digital payment modes. How can it benefit female employees? The bill will provide equal wages to both men and women for similar type of work. Employees will be hired on the basis of skill, effort, experience. New Delhi, Mar 23 () The Labour Ministry has asked states and central ministries concerned to ensure that employers do not fire their employees, particularly casual or contractual workers, or reduce their wages amid COVID-19 outbreak as it would deepen the crisis.The ministry has also asked the state and ministries that all employees going on leave during the lockdown period, they should be deemed on duty without any consequential pay cut. "In the backdrop of such challenging situation, all the employers of public or private establishments may be advised to extend their coordination by not terminating their employees, particularly casual or contractual workers from the job or reduce their wages," Labour Secretary H K Smariya said in a letter to all chief secretaries and concerned ministries. "If any worker takes leave, he should be deemed to be on duty without any consequential deduction in wages for this period. Further, if the place of employment is to be made non-operational due to COVID-19, the employee of such units will be deemed to be on duty."Samariya is of the view of that the termination of employees from the job or reduction in wages in this scenario would further deepen the crises and will not only weaken the financial condition of the employee but also hamper their morale to combat their fight with this epidemic. He has asked the chief secretaries and concerned ministries to issue necessary advisory to employers/owners of all establishment under their purview.The Labour Secretary noted that the World is facing a catastrophic situation due to outbreak of COVID-19 and in order to combat this challenge, coordinated joint efforts of all sections of society are required.In view of COVID-19, there may be incidences that employee's/worker's services are dispensed with on this pretext or the employee/worker are forced to go on leave without wage/salaries, said Samariya expressing his apprehensions. Labour Min asks states, concerned ministries to ensure no job or pay cut by employers amid lock down

New Delhi, Jun 12 () As many as 25 officials of the Ministry of Labour and Employment tested positive for COVID-19 this week, taking the number of infected employees in the ministry to 36, according to a source. Some family members of the officials have also tested positive for coronavirus infection, the source said. "As many as 25 officials in the labour ministry tested positive for COVID-19. Earlier 11 persons in the ministry were tested positive," the source said. As many as six infected persons are from personal staff of Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar. The officials in the ministry are being tested for COVID-19 after two of its employees found positive last week, which led to the closure of Shram Shakti Bhawan that houses the ministry for two days to June 5 for sanitisation. The number of infected persons in the ministry increased to 11 by Sunday. The source also said that the top brass of the ministry is making a case for sealing the building for thorough sanitisation again and home quarantining the staff working in the ministries housed in the building. Though Shram Shakti Bhawan was sealed on June 4 and 5, the Ministry of Power had called its staff on June 5 for some work, the source said. Therefore, it was decided not to open the building on June 8. However, some officials of the labour ministry visited the office on June 8 also. The building remained open for officials thereafter. Among the 11 officials found infected earlier, there was a joint secretary, a steno, a principal private secretary, a private secretary, six multi-task assistants and a driver in the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The closure of the building for two days was part of standard operating procedure for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite the growth, women refrain from pursuing gig work. That is majorly because of the gender disparity in terms of pay, flexibility and employment status — that prevails in the <keyword id="3080230" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy">gig economy</keyword> as well. This also reflects in the <keyword id="4476046" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="female-labour">Female Labour</keyword> Force Participation Rate (FLPR) in India, which has been falling for two decades now. There are at least two surveys that explain the lag in the labour reforms for women. In 2018, a survey said that a third of women were disinterested in joining the gig economy due to the lack of job security and uncertainty on employment status. Pay parity still a concern In addition to this, they are being paid less, widening the gender parity. A research by <a href="https://www.orfonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ORF_IssueBrief_359_GenderGig.pdf">Observer Research Foundation (ORF)</a> reiterates the data from TeamLease in India that said the gig economy added 40,000 women in 2019. But, they are making 10% less than men, especially the delivery executives. The same year, the <keyword id="119211" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-labour">Ministry of Labour</keyword> and Employment proposed the Code on Social Security Bill, to offer social security benefits to gig workers. On those lines, Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on May 14, said that social security schemes will now be extended to even gig and platform workers, the proposal is awaiting approval of the Parliament and the Standing Committees. It is important because food-tech and e-commerce players such as Uber, Ola, Zomato and Swiggy, account for nearly 90% of the total gig workers in India. On an average, women make an average of ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 per month in the emerging gig economy. “This could be attributed to their income being of the ‘distressed’ category. Consequently, as soon as conditions improve, women leave the workforce — this phenomenon is widely visible in India’s informal economy as well,” said the ORF report. Limited access to digital technologies That aside, the lag in the access to digital technologies is yet another hurdle to women’s participation in gig work. Despite the country’s push for digitisation, merely 16% women in India use mobile internet, as per the findings of the GSMA Mobile Gender Gap Report 2019. To overcome that, many companies offer their own devices to facilitate work. “The gig economy is here to stay and offers many ways for women to start and improve their careers. However, the problem in India is twofold: an inability to facilitate women’s movement into the workforce, and the perpetuation of structural and operational barriers promoting gendered division of gig work,” said the report. Future scope As per Deloitte data, nearly 80% of the organisations have less than 10% of their employees as gig workers, accounting majorly to <keyword id="2245174" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Contractual-staff">contractual staff</keyword>. India’s gig economy is projected at a market size of $455 billion over the next three years — which might increase even further with the new-found interest. “A large majority of this is expected to be contributed by the unorganised sector of the economy, as India Inc's adoption of gig workers remains nascent at best,” the Deloitte report said. The report also indicated the UNDP Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released in October 2022 showed 41.5 crore people exiting multidimensional poverty in India during the last 15 years. India's success in reducing poverty has also contributed to a decline in poverty in South Asia with South Asia no longer remaining the most multi-dimensionally poor region. The report also deals with a global outlook, inflation, food security, poverty, health and employment and <keyword id="6354507" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world" source="Orion">World</keyword> and monetary policy. On domestic inflation, the report said consumer price index (CPI) inflation was largely driven by food inflation with major contributors being imported food items like oil and fats during the first five months of 2022. Since June 2022 however, domestic seasonal factors have increased the inflation of vegetables, cereals and their products, which have contributed to elevating food inflation. On the global outlook, the department of economic affairs said the prospect of a global economic slowdown had led to an outflow of portfolio investments from most countries into safe-haven US treasuries. This, combined with higher policy rates deployed by the <keyword id="6355253" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="federal-reserve" source="Orion">Federal Reserve</keyword> to counter inflation, has significantly strengthened the US dollar vis-a-vis other currencies. According to the report, the depreciation of most currencies has also led to a global drawdown of foreign exchange reserves to protect their values and prevent volatility in the foreign exchange market. On food security, the report said global food security has deteriorated and India may turn out to be an outlier with proactive and pre-emptive government interventions. 2022 brought to the forefront not only the issues of macroeconomic and geopolitical risks but also the vulnerability and interconnectedness of the global food system to shocks. The geopolitical conflict and climatic events have moved the focus to the issues of fragility and over-dependence on a few countries or regions for global food security. The report said, "Russia and Ukraine are among the most important producers of essential agricultural commodities, including wheat, maize, sunflower seeds and inputs like fertilisers. Together with other countries bordering the <keyword id="391209" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="black-sea" source="Orion">Black Sea</keyword>, they constitute the world's breadbasket." The Black Sea serves as a critical supply and transit hub to move food commodities from these countries to the rest of the world. As the conflict choked the hub, the movement of food items from these countries to the rest of the world got affected, threatening people's livelihoods directly/indirectly connected with the food business in the Black Sea region. Rising economic activity has led to a decline in the unemployment rate, the department of economic affairs wrote in the report. With the recovery in economic activities across sectors, the overall employment situation has also improved, overcoming the impact of the pandemic. It added that the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) shows the urban unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above declining from 12.6 per cent in the quarter ending June 2021 to 7.6 per cent one year later (quarter ending June 2022). This is accompanied by an improvement in the labour force participation rate (LFPR) as well, reflecting that by the time the current year was one-quarter over, the economy had come out of the grip of the Covid-19-induced slowdown, according to the monthly review. In a world where monetary tightening has weakened growth prospects, the finance ministry said India appears well-placed to grow at a moderately brisk rate in the coming years on account of the priority it accorded macroeconomic stability. It added the financial system stress in the second decade of the millennium, a consequence of the lending boom witnessed in the first decade-plus, is now behind us. It also added that private sector financial and non-financial balance sheets are healthy and incipient signs of a new personal sector capital formation cycle are visible. Retail inflationary pressures expected to ease with fresh Kharif arrivals: Finance Ministry

New Delhi, Dec 29 () The labour ministry has chalked out a plan to launch a new portal 'Santusht' next month for speedy redressal of worker as well as employer grievances and ensuring effective implementation of labour laws at the grassroot level, a source said.
 Initially, Santusht (Hindi for satisfied) would monitor all services provided by retirement fund body EPFO and health insurance and services provider ESIC to formal sector workers.
 Later, the portal would cover other wings of the ministry as well. It would also have data on real time basis to assess the performance of each and every official.
 Workers and employers can lodge their complaints on the portal, which would be managed by an internal monitoring cell comprising five to six officers, the source said.
 Presently, the ministry is in the process of categorising 44 central labour laws into four broad codes on wages, industrial relations, social security and occupational safety, health and working conditions (OSH).
 The ministry top brass is hopeful of getting all the four codes operational by 2020.
 "The ministry wants to ensure effective implementation of four labour codes which are likely to be a reality in 2020," the source said.
 "It is not enough to have legislations for safeguarding workers' rights and providing various facilities to employers for creating conducive environment for job creation and robust economic growth. The effective implementation of all codes is required. That would be ensured by Santusht," the source added.
 The portal would have all data related to business transacted by the EPFO and ESIC.
 There have been grievances of the subscribers of the two bodies as well as other workers regarding poor implementation of labour laws in the country. Workers have faced issues like delay in settling claims by Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).
 Some workers do not get minimum wages, while other issues related to labour law implementation at the grassroot level affects both employees and employers.
 The portal would help the labour ministry to assess the performance of officials, which would be given due weighage at the time of their appraisals, transfers and postings, the source added. The government has set a target to create employment opportunities to one crore youth by 2020 through a skill development scheme under the Pradhan Mantri <keyword id="1438023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaushal-Vikas-Yojana">Kaushal Vikas Yojana</keyword> (PMKVY), Union Minister of <keyword id="4092809" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-for-labour-and-employment-bandaru-dattatreya">State for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya</keyword> told an agency. 
 "The Union Government will be establishing skill development centres across the country with an amount of Rs 12,000 crore to create employment opportunities to 1 crore youth by 2020," said <keyword id="-1236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dattatreya">Dattatreya</keyword> after inaugurating a two-day 'Job Mela' here. 
 The minister said, "To increase employment avenues for job seekers, The <keyword id="180102" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Labour-and-Employment">Ministry of Labour and Employment</keyword> is establishing Model Career Centres (<keyword id="50535" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="MCC">MCC</keyword>) across the country. There are 950 employment exchanges in the country, out of these 100 centres will be developed as model centres at the cost of Rs 350 crore." 
 
The minister also said that the Union Government has decided to open 100 driver training institutes across the country and one of them will be setup here. 
 "The Union Government has already sanctioned Rs 170 crore for skill development centres in <keyword id="68884" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> state. 
 
The model career centre will provide counselling and assessment, soft skills training, technical upskilling and placement to students, he added.

 “While girls enrolling in science for higher studies in India has seen an increase, the number of women entering the workplace is not in the same proportion,” the UN said. This is a global problem. Women represent a minority in the world of science at a mere 30%; and only 35% of the STEM students are women. India however is a paradox where it has graduates but not researchers. “We need a dedicated strategy not only for increasing the representation of women in the talent pipeline for STEM jobs, but also for ensuring that they thrive, incentivizing them to remain in these high-paying jobs and institutionalizing organizational cultures that enable women to advance in these fields,” Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN Women <a href="https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2020/2/statement-ed-phumzile-international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science">said on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science</a> on February 11. Less published work, less pay One of the major reasons for the low participation is the gender pay gap. Despite the ground-breaking research and performance, women in the field of STEM are known to be paid less for their research work compared to men — not progressing as much in their careers thereby. “Girls are often made to believe they are not smart enough for STEM, or that boys and men have natural affinity for the field,” UN countered. It also said that the women in the field publish fewer research papers across the world. Here too, India is an exception. A recent study published in ‘<a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/science-technology/gender-balance-in-scientific-research-improving-in-india-study-63313">Journal of Informetrics</a>’ said that one in three research papers published in India, was written by a female author — in over 186 fields as per the scopus database. In fact, in subjects such as dentistry, psychology and humanities, women were almost at par with men with one female author for every two male authors. India’s push for women in science and research It is possible that women might be getting little recognition and lesser pay in spite of these achievements - encouraging fewer women to come into the field. Women constitute merely 15% of faculty positions in science. In the research programmes, women account for a third of the PhD awardees. Not just in STEM but India has a long way to go before they attain gender parity across fields and industries. According to the <a href="https://www.weforum.org/reports/gender-gap-2020-report-100-years-pay-equality">World Economic Forum Gender Gap Report</a>, it will take 257 years to eliminate the prevailing gender gap in the workforce, globally. India ranks 112th in the Global Gender Gap Index in 2020. Therefore, the universities are now striving to achieve something that has been taken for granted for long — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/iits-and-nits-will-now-be-ranked-on-how-many-women-they-educate-and-employ/articleshow/73296855.cms">gender parity</a>. In January 2020, the ministry of science and technology said that it will now rank institutions — on gender equality, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/top-institutes-will-now-be-graded-on-gender-equality/articleshow/73283922.cms">according to </a>the Times of India report. And these ranks will be for those offering STEM courses. As many as 20 Indian institutions — including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Science (NITs) — have joined hands to facilitate it. The government aims to rope in over 90 institutions as a part of the new grading system. “This will definitely give a much needed thrust to the inclusion of women in academia. However a key challenge will be to define the terms of how institutions will effectively measure gender equality. They should not merely execute gender equality on paper, rather it should ensure inclusion in education and employment,” Neeti Sharma, VP, TeamLease Services told Business Insider.
