<ul class="summary-list"><li>In January, the actors in <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s "<keyword id="4859798" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="mindhunter">Mindhunter</keyword>" were released from their contracts, signaling a long delay before a third season of the show would be made.</li><li>Now coshowrunner David Fincher admits that a third season is very unlikely to happen. </li><li>"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show," Fincher said <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/10/mindhunter-season-three-not-happening.html">in an interview with Vulture</a>. "And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs."</li><li>The show wasn't officially canceled by Netflix, but fans shouldn't expect season three. </li></ul><p>At the start of this year, Netflix's original drama series "Mindhunter" was put on an indefinite hold, and now its future looks even more bleak. There are no current plans to make a third season thanks a combination of low viewership, expensive production costs, and the strenuous work the show requires.</p><p>In January 2020, <a href="https://tvline.com/2020/01/15/mindhunter-season-3-netflix-cancelled-renewed/">TVLine reported</a> that the show's executive producer and coshowrunner David Fincher was working on other projects. This led to the company's decision to release the "Mindhunter" actors from their contracts, though the show wasn't formally canceled.</p><p>"David is focused on directing his first Netflix film 'Mank' and on producing the second season of 'Love, Death and Robots,'" a Netflix representative said in a statement. "He may revisit 'Mindhunter' again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."</p><p>But now, ahead of the premiere of Fincher's movie "Mank," the director says a third season of "Mindhunter" is a very distant possibility. Speaking with Vulture, <a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/10/mindhunter-season-three-not-happening.html">Fincher said making the second season was a huge challenge</a>. </p><p>"When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don't know if I have it in me right now to break season three,'" Fincher said.</p><div type="image" title="Mindhunter netflix" height="2001" width="2668" msid="78849533" hostid="261"></div><p>Netflix doesn't release full viewing numbers to the public. But, as former Netflix showrunner <a href="https://www.insider.com/jonathan-entwistle-netflix-cancellations-one-season-2020-10">Jonathan Entwistle told Insider</a>, the company will disclose viewership data to individual show creators for their own series. </p><p>Fincher told Vulture that the viewership for "Mindhunter" didn't seem high enough to justify the cost for the show.  </p><p>"Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show," Fincher said. "We talked about, 'Finish "Mank" and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs."</p><p>Fincher's comments about the relationship between cost and viewership will be familiar to anyone closely following Netflix's recent <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> show cancellations. </p><p>"The biggest thing that we look at is, are we getting enough viewership to justify the cost of the series?" former vice president of Netflix originals, Cindy Holland, said during a Television Critics Association event in 2018.</p><div type="image" title="Ed Kemper serial killer Mindhunter TV show netflix" height="751" width="1001" msid="78849535" hostid="261"></div><p>"We also look at other things: how beloved the fan community is, how social a title is," Holland continued, <a href="https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/08/01/how-does-netflix-decide-what-to-cancel-and-what-to-renew-its-complicated">as reported by IGN</a>. "There are lots of other things that we look at that you all can also see out in the world. But we are deliberate and thoughtful, and there are a lot of things that go into the decision."</p><p>So does all this mean "Mindhunter" will never return to Netflix? Playwright Joe Penhall adapted the series from the non-fiction book&#xa0;co-written by John E. Douglas, the FBI&#xa0;agent who helped invent modern criminal profiling.</p><p>"Mindhunter" is, probably not coincidentally, similar in tone, pacing, and look to Fincher's excellent 2007 film "Zodiac."</p><p>Essentially, "Mindhunter" is&#xa0;an origin story of the team who figured out that serial killers are likely to harm animals, wet the bed over the age of 12, and have terrible relationships with their mothers&#xa0;<span>-&#xa0;</span>and by default, hatred toward women, who are usually their victims.&#xa0;</p><p><span>"Mindhunter," like 2016's "Stranger Things," seemingly came out of nowhere. </span></p><p><span>Screeners of the first season were not available to the press, which is quite rare especially for new shows. Besides the usual teaser trailer and full trailer, there wasn't much marketing for the show. I live in New York City, where ads for TV shows haunt me for months on my commute. Usually light marketing and no screeners is a sign that&#xa0;a show is really, really bad. </span></p><p><span>So I, and many TV critics, were surprised to&#xa0;find that "Mindhunter" is incredible.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59e773f1ddd0631d008b4c93-2400/327mindhunter101unit15963r7.jpg" alt="327_Mindhunter_101_Unit_15963R7" data-mce-source="Netflix"><p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>In&#xa0;ten episodes, you'll never actually see a murder, and you'll&#xa0;barely even get a glimpse of crime scenes. You might see, for example,&#xa0;some episodes begin or end with The BTK killer, Dennis Rader&#xa0;<span>-&#xa0;</span>who wasn't caught until the early 2000s&#xa0;<span>-&#xa0;</span>leave or arrive at a crime scene. But you don't see him kill. The violence is depicted and evident in photos, dialogue, and the&#xa0;tension in every scene&#xa0;with one of the&#xa0;killers in prison.&#xa0;</p><p>FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (<span>Holt McCallany</span>) travel around the country educating law enforcement about the psychology of criminals, in hopes that it can help them catch a killer or a criminal. They call this "road school." While they're on the road, Holden and Bill visit high-profile killers in prison.&#xa0;<span>Holden and Bill visit Richard Speck (Jack Erdie) in one of the show's most chilling scenes at a grotesque prison in Joliet, Illinois. In 1966, Speck murdered eight nursing students in Chicago in one night.&#xa0;</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59e7741eddd0631c1e8b480a-2400/508mindhunter108unit05415r4.jpeg" alt="508_Mindhunter_108_unit_05415R4" data-mce-source="Netflix"><p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>At first, their visits are unknown to their boss at the FBI. But after their research helps solve a few murders, their boss gets&#xa0;the project approved, adds Boston University professor Dr. Wendy Dunn (a very excellent and underused Anna Torv) to the team, and gets them funding.</p><p>Every actor playing the real-life killers is so haunting that the performances will stay with you. And though their performances are terrifying, killers like Brudos and Kemper are so charming and empathetic when they share their troubled childhood that you might end up feeling bad for them,&#xa0;just like special agent Holden eventually does.</p><p>What separates "Mindhunter" from other crime dramas is the way it intertwines the agents' personal lives into the story. A lot of crime shows, particularly on network TV, have&#xa0;a heavy-handed approach to applying a law enforcement character's personal life in to their work life, and vice versa. "Mindhunter" is different.</p><p>Holden is a&#xa0;weird guy, but he's a good one - or so we think. We watch his first real relationship with grad student Debbie Mitford (Hannah Gross) blossom, and slowly unravel. As&#xa0;Holden continues his research and casual, explicit, and disturbing conversations with murderers, the sympathetic character established in the first episode shifts completely.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59e7744cddd0632d008b4cb5-2400/725mindhunter108unit08151r5%201.jpeg" alt="725_Mindhunter_108_unit_08151R5 (1)" data-mce-source="Netflix"><p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>Throughout the season we learn more about Bill, who is at first reluctant to do personal interviews with killers. Bill has a wife&#xa0;and an adopted son, who's not adjusting well after three years - and ironically, might exhibit some of the&#xa0;personality traits&#xa0;they're finding in the killers&#xa0;they're studying.</p><p>Dr. Dunn, who unfortunately doesn't get as much alone screen time as she deserves (she likely will in season two), establishes her past and personal life in quick scenes that don't need to explain anything to the viewer beyond what we see.&#xa0;</p><p>The show's&#xa0;showcase (or lack thereof) of its female characters&#xa0;is its&#xa0;primary flaw, with Dr. Dunn&#xa0;<span>- an educated, intelligent closeted lesbian who doesn't answer to anybody - losing screen time to her partners, Holden and Bill, despite the fact that she's one of the reasons their department exists</span>. Holden's girlfriend, Debbie, only&#xa0;seems to exist&#xa0;so we are aware that Holden has a sex life. Her only thing, really, is that she is a grad student. Bill's wife, Nancy, is arguably the most developed female character. Meanwhile, Netflix is expanding its comedy and romance content, according to the report. </p><p>The chart below shows how the percentage of Amazon's TV commissions that are sci-fi doubled from the second half of 2018 through 2019, from around 15% to around 30%. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e4565654b661b236505a88e-1280/sci fi as proportion of netflix and amazon live action.jpg" alt="sci fi as proportion of netflix and amazon live action" /><p>Netflix currently has 41 sci-fi TV shows in production or development and Amazon Prime Video has 27. But Netflix's sci-fi commissions saw a decrease as a percentage of its output as Amazon began ramping its up, as the chart above shows.</p><p>While Netflix's overall percentage of sci-fi commissions saw an upward trend again beginning in the first half of 2019, Amazon's was leaning more into the genre. Ampere Analysis said that this is due to Netflix's focus on the romance and comedy genres.</p><p>Ampere analyst Alice Thorpe said that Netflix's romance commissions grew from 4% in the second half half of 2018, when it saw that sci-fi drop, to 16% in the second half of 2019. Similarly, its comedy commissions grew from 8% to 18% in the same time period.</p><p>"Amazon appears to be redoubling its efforts in the sci-fi space," Thorpe told Business Insider. "Sci-fi and fantasy is the real growth genre at Amazon, which has instead been moving away from comedy content."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5deebc91fd9db21247082d2b-1386/screen shot 2019-12-09 at 42633 pm.png" alt="the expanse" /><p>The trends are noticeable. For instance, Amazon greenlit "The Boys" season two and a fifth season of "The Expanse," which it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-expanse-cast-season-4-saved-by-amazon-prime-video-2019-12">revived after the Syfy network canceled it</a> in 2018, before their respective first and fourth seasons had even debuted on Prime Video. Amazon said in August that "The Boys" was one of its most-watched shows yet.</p><p>But the company's biggest dip into the sci-fi and fantasy genre is its upcoming "Lord of the Rings" TV series, for which it dropped $250 million for the rights, according to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/how-lord-rings-tv-series-landed-at-amazon-not-netflix-1099213">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.</p><p>With Netflix's "The Crown" <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/global/the-crown-will-end-after-season-five-with-imelda-staunton-as-queen-elizabeth-1203488171/">ending early</a> with its fifth season and its crime drama "Mindhunter" on an <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/mindhunter-season-3-netflix-1203469023/">indefinite hiatus</a>, its number of traditional "prestige" dramas appears slim compared to its commitment to romance and comedy (or sci-fi and fantasy). Netflix said in December that its sci-fi series "Stranger Things" and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-the-witcher-creator-on-season-2-viral-song-production-2020-1">its fantasy series "The Witcher"</a> were its two most popular shows of 2019.</p><p>As for other streaming services, Ampere Analysis told Business Insider that Hulu has 13 scripted, live-action, sci-fi and fantasy TV shows in production or development and Disney Plus has nine (both platforms are owned by Disney).
