<ul><li><strong>The Women and Child Development (WCD) and Education Ministries are working in a coordinated way to meet the Prime Minister's vision of providing nutritious meals to the students in government schools. </strong></li><li><strong>The Prime Minister had in 2018 launched 'Poshan Abhiyaan'-- a robust scheme which has been playing an important role in eliminating malnutrition from the country. </strong></li><li><span></span><strong>On this 'Poshan Maah 2020', Modi's government planned to focus on an intensive campaign across the country for the holistic nourishment of children with severe acute malnutrition, Union Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-shah">Amit Shah</keyword> said in a statement.</strong> <br /></li></ul>Milk will soon be an integral part of the <keyword id="6467547" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Midday-Meal">midday meal</keyword> scheme to ensure proper nutrition to all students in government schools across the country, which is in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aim to make a malnutrition-free India.<br /><br />The Women and Child Development (WCD) and Education Ministries are working in a coordinated way to meet the Prime Minister's vision of providing nutritious meals to the students in government schools. <br /><br />All the officials linked to the departments concerned dealing with the policies have been directed by both the ministries on the 3rd 'Rashtriya Poshan Maah' to expedite changes in <keyword id="115962" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="midday">midday</keyword> meal by including milk soon after the schools resume functioning with attendance by children. <br /><br />The Prime Minister had in 2018 launched 'Poshan Abhiyaan'-- a robust scheme which has been playing an important role in eliminating malnutrition from the country. <br /><br />On this 'Poshan Maah 2020', Modi's government planned to focus on an intensive campaign across the country for the holistic nourishment of children with severe acute malnutrition, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a statement. <br /><br />In this regard, an official, requesting anonymity, told IANS that the Education Ministry may come up with a revised menu for midday meals scheme, that will include milk as an integral component.<br /><br />All the state government's have been told to implement the new midday meal policy which includes milk. <br /><br />Earlier, the then HRD Ministry had revised its midday meal policy in 2016. <br /><br />In order to give better quality food to children in schools where midday meals are provided, the HRD has revised its norms, that include milk as a necessary supplement.<br /><br />WCD Minister <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> on Monday assured Vice-President <keyword id="8563926" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="m-venkaiah">M Venkaiah</keyword> Naidu that the central government would consider recommending to all the states to "include milk in the midday meal scheme".<br /><br />Irani's assurance came after Naidu earlier in the day suggested to her to add milk in breakfast or midday meals of children to improve nutritional level. <br /><br />The Vice President spoke with Irani on the 3rd Rashtriya Poshan Maah aimed at contributing towards a malnutrition-free India.<br /><br />An official in the Education Ministry told IANS that all students from Classes 1 to 8 in all government schools will be given 200 ml milk every day along with the midday meals.<br /><br />As per the official, this policy as is similar to the one issued in 2016 and then HRD Ministry direction to states in 2018 in which many loopholes were reported in its implementation. <br /><br />The states were earlier also directed to include milk and milk products in the midday meals so that these items could be procured from cooperative milk unions or federations.<br /><br />The Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department also took up the issue with the state Chief Secretaries on December 15, 2017, requesting them to consider supplying milk and milk products through their network under midday meals scheme of the Centre.<br /><br />Karnataka, <keyword id="6355554" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Haryana, Puducherry, and Gujarat have confirmed supply of milk through schools but some states with higher surplus stocks of milk powder like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab are yet to decide in this regard.<br /><br />Almost two decades have passed since the midday meal became a part of the daily routine in government schools across the country. <br /><br />The central government had received complaints earlier on about inclusion of milk in midday meals. As per government norms, every child should receive 150-200 ml milk. However, there have been complaints that one litre of milk was mixed in a bucketful of water to serve to more than 80 children in a school in rural Uttar Pradesh. Milk to be 'integral' part of midday meal scheme soon

A group of paediatrics has written to the <keyword id="19905572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Maharashtra government" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Maharashtra government">Maharashtra government</keyword> urging it to stop giving sugary food items in <keyword id="22835936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="school-midday-meals" source="keywords">school midday meals</keyword>. The Maha Academy of Paediatrics. in its letter to state school education minister Deepak Kesarkar, said such food items could result in <keyword id="19914811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="children" source="keywords">children</keyword> becoming diabetic and obese.<br /><br />The letter cited the government's GR on serving rice pudding to children four times a week under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana (formerly known as midday meal scheme). "The GR mentions that 25 grams of sugar be added to the meals of students from Class I to V and 45 grams for students from Class VI to VIII," the letter said.<br /><br />"We need 25 grams of sugar per day. There are two types of sugar. One is added and the other is naturally present in food items. The students keep eating other food items throughout the day, which increases their sugar intake," Maha Paediatrics Association president Dr Ramgopal Chejara told PTI.<br /><br />"Adding 25 grams and 45 grams of sugar in these meals could make the children diabetic and obese. Our teams have visited schools. We have appealed to the government to stop giving such sugary food items," he said.<br /><br />Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve too criticised the state government over this GR. The state government thinks the future generation is a factory to digest excess sugar, he said in a post on X. Stop giving sugary items in school midday meals, paediatric group urges Maharashtra govt

New Delhi, Dec 24 () Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday inaugurated a centralised new kitchen, supported by Swiss power major ABB India, to feed 21,000 children in government schools in the national capital.
<p>"Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia inaugurated the Akshaya Patra Foundation's new centralised kitchen in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area of New Delhi," ABB India said in a statement said.
</p><p>According to the statement, the kitchen - sponsored by ABB India - has the capacity to cater to the nutrition needs of students through 25,000 midday meals across various government schools in the surrounding areas.
</p><p>Initially, it will serve over 21,000 children of 24 government schools in the national capital and gradually extend its reach.
</p><p>Mohan Cooperative kitchen will be the Akshaya Patra Foundation's 51st kitchen in the country.
</p><p>From January 1, 2020, Akshaya Patra will begin operations in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, Jahangir Puri and Samaypur Badli, feeding 64,179 children across 134 schools in the national capital through these three kitchens.
</p><p>ABB India's partnership with Akshaya Patra is over a decade old and has been expanding in line with the mission of Akshaya Patra to feed 5 million children by 2025.
</p>Over the years, the support by ABB India towards Akshaya Patra has increased many folds from the Mid-Day Meal Programme to supporting a centralised kitchen. The current partnership of ABB India with Akshaya Patra supports around 50,000 meals daily to government school children across Gujarat, Karnataka and Delhi.  KKS  BAL

Sisodia inaugurates ABB India sponsored kitchen to provide midday meal to school kids

<p>At least <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/18/us-india-children-idUSBRE96H15F20130718">23 school children were killed</a> after eating a meal of rice and vegetables in Eastern <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The food was part of a national free meal program called the Midday Meal. Many others continue to be treated at a hospital.</p>
<p>Parents have raised questions about the incident after the principal of the school and her husband absconded. One parent told Indian Express that they received specific requests to ensure their children went to school the next day. They said the Principal's husband even visited a few of the parents and asked that the children to be sent to school because they would receive books. <a href="http://www.indianexpress.com/news/parents-raise-question-on-role-of-principal-husband/1143804/">From The Indian Express: </a></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Raju Sah, who lost his seven-year-old son Shiva, said, "On Monday, Yadav came to my house, requesting me to send Shiva to school on Tuesday as books would be distributed. This was the first time that the Principal's husband made such a request."</p>
<p>Parents also said cooking supplies were stored at the Principal's home.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/18/us-india-children-idUSBRE96H15F20130718">Doctors told Reuters that they believed</a> the food was contaminated with pesticide as they could smell organophosphorus, a compound often used as a pesticide. The police have however said the cause of the contamination hasn't been confirmed yet. They are focused on the cooking oil.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-23354404">BBC reports that a villager saw crows</a> eat the food that was dumped outside the school and that they were unable to fly and seemed to be gasping for air.<strong> </strong></p>
<p>The victims have been buried, some in a mass grave. Meanwhile, the police are looking for the principal and her husband.  The education minister M.M. Pallam Raju has said the country will set up a committee to check the quality of food served under the Midday meal scheme.</p>

And the move will especially benefit children from rural schools. Most of the meals of children is rich in grains which is subsidized, but they lack the key source of vitamins-vegetables. <br /><br />Now, the government too made a few amendments to its mid day meal menu, adding staple grains and vegetables among the preferred choices for meals. The mid day meal programme <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/education/mhrd-guidelines-soon-for-kitchen-gardens-in-govt-schools/article27003720.ece">covers 94.6 million children</a> across schools in India, and employs 2.5 million cooks and helpers, says BusinessLine.<br /><br /><strong><keyword id="6378239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="malnutrition">Malnutrition</keyword> in India</strong><br /><br />According to the government’s <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/5-indian-children-overweight-show-early-signs-of-diabetes-high-cholesterol/">Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS)</a>, malnutrition among children caused several diseases including diabetes, <keyword id="22984" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="hypertension">hypertension</keyword> and chronic kidney disease. Indian schools to set-up vegetable gardens and turn mid-day meals nutritious

The ministry is also exploring whether it can reduce the central government allocation to flagship education schemes such as the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Mid-day Meal scheme while increasing it for new initiatives focused on quality improvement and assessment. While the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan or SSA (drive for the universalization of education) and the midday school meal scheme will continue to get sizable allocations, the Union budget is likely to emphasize the quality of outcome in schools.<br />

According to <a href="http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/08/28/159982983/in-india-100-year-old-lunch-delivery-service-goes-modern">NPR</a>, every day, about <strong>200,000 hot lunches are hand-delivered to office workers across the city of Mumbai </strong>by approximately 5,000 deliverymen. <strong>The deliverymen are known as dabba wallahs, and the</strong> <strong>delivery service as tiffin wallah</strong> - tiffin refers to the metal containers that the food is delivered in.</p><p>The network of dabbah wallahs is complex but efficient, with multiple handoffs between couriers. It's a marvel that the food manages to make it to its rightful owner.</p><p>Until now, the food being delivered has been local dishes cooked in home kitchens. That's changing though; prices are going up and food is becoming more modern. The cafeteria might have only served cardboard-flavored pizza, but at least you got a break from classes and the chance to talk to your friends.</p><p>In the working world, however, this midday meal often takes a backseat. In fact, lunch breaks are becoming increasingly endangered.</p><p><span></span>One study discovered that 42% of respondents either rarely or only occasionally take a lunch break, while 39% of participants eat at their desks, <a href="http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2013/10/09/the-vanishincg-lunch-break-2">according to U.S. News &amp; World Report</a>.</p><p>That's not good. In fact, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-successful-people-spend-their-lunch-break-2016-9">successful people tend to use their lunch breaks to boost their productivity</a>.</p><p>Unsuccessful folks sabotage themselves by misusing their allotted midday breaks.</p><p>Here are nine things successful people rarely do during lunch:</p><h3>1. Eat at their desks</h3><p>I'm a total hypocrite. I'm writing this article as I'm eating a falafel bowl at my desk.</p><p>Still, it's probably a good idea to break out of your "desk lunch" routine. The reality is, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-shouldnt-eat-lunch-at-your-desk-2015-12">eating at your desk deprives you of the benefits of a midday break</a>. You might feel more productive, but taking a break is actually a good thing for your creativity and efficiency.</p><h3>2. Work right through lunch</h3><p>The most successful people take a break.</p><p>Working straight through lunch may provide you with more time, but it does nothing for the quality of your work.</p><p>"We know that creativity and innovation happen when people change their environment, and especially when they expose themselves to a <a href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/078559809#.VPh5f3zF-Sp">nature-like environment</a>, to a natural environment," workplace psychology expert and University of California professor <a href="http://gsm.ucdavis.edu/faculty/kimberly-d-elsbach">Kimberly Elsbach</a> <a href="http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/03/05/390726886/were-not-taking-enough-lunch-breaks-why-thats-bad-for-business">told NPR</a>.</p><p>And when you do go to lunch, don't check email the whole time.</p><p> </p><h3>3. Forget about lunch altogether</h3><p>Successful people don't forget about lunch. They schedule it into their day and actually take the break.</p><h3>4. Make unhealthy choices</h3><p>Fast food is tempting for a whole number of reasons. It's delicious. It's cheap. Perhaps most importantly, it's <em>fast</em>. When you're trying to rush through your lunch break, it sounds like the perfect option, right?</p><p>Successful people don't wreck their health for the sake of convenience.</p><p> </p><h3> </h3><h3>5. Spend a ton of money eating out</h3><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/easy-ways-to-save-at-least-5-a-day-2016-1">Eating out constantly isn't cheap</a>, especially if you live in a city. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/i-cooked-all-my-own-meals-for-a-week-to-save-money-2015-6">Start packing your own lunches</a>.</p><h3>6. Eat alone every day</h3><p>Humans are social beings - we're not meant to sit around for hours without interacting with others. You don't even have to hang out with anyone from your office. Mumbai, Apr 7 () India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) on Tuesday retained a stable outlook on the Indian education sector for 2020-21, driven by sustained rise in enrolments for higher studies.<p> Although the nationwide lockdown will adversely impact the household income, especially of the ones at bottom of the pyramid and may lead to school dropouts, Ind-Ra believes the government's ongoing initiatives like the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, Samagra Shiksha and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would support the sector.</p><p> According to the report, the education market is likely to expand by 5-6 per cent in FY21, driven mainly by growing enrolments in higher education which increased by 2.07 per cent annually in FY19.</p><p> Ind-Ra expects the market size of the education sector to touch Rs 6,48,300 crore in FY21.</p><p> The budgetary allocation for mid-day meals in schools was increased by about 11 per cent year-on-year to Rs 11,000 crore in FY21.</p><p> The budgetary allocation towards education also increased to Rs 99,311.5 crore in FY21, which will improve the infrastructure and quality of education, it added.</p><p> The government initiatives towards the new education policy and emphasis on research-oriented higher educational institutions or universities are likely to improve the educational standards in the country.</p><p> Also, the government initiatives towards increasing funding options for educational institutions through external commercial borrowings and foreign direct investments will positively impact the international positioning of the Indian education sector.</p><p> Ind-Ra has also maintained a stable outlook on its rated educational institutions portfolio for FY21 on the expectation of a sustained increase in enrolments, a moderate increase in revenue and comfortable operating profitability.</p><p> The educational institutes realise full-year fee either at the time of admissions or in 2-4 instalments, the lockdown is unlikely to have a major impact on their annual revenues, Ind-Ra said.</p><p> However, since the school leaving examinations are not yet complete and the lockdown may delay the admission process, education institutes without a liquidity buffer may face a liquidity crunch in case of delayed admissions, it added.</p><p> The report noted that COVID-19 may bring in a paradigm shift in the way professional courses are taught.</p> The adoption of the digital platform to impart teaching will gain significant traction, it added.
