If you stay in Delhi and have a craving for a <keyword id="126895" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McDonald">McDonald</keyword>'s meal, you’ll possibly face a tough time because as many as 43 outlets of the fast-food chain are shutting down. Yes, the infighting between Connaught Plaza Restaurants (CPRL) and McDonald’s took an ugly turn as a result of which the CPRL board decided to shut out the outlets. CPRL is a 50:50 local joint venture between Vikram Bakshi and McDonald's that operates the fast food chain in north and east India\. "It's unfortunate, but operation of 43 restaurants operated by CPRL has been temporarily suspended,” Vikram Bakshi, former managing director of CPRL, which operates 168 restaurants, told ET. ET quoted sources as saying the CPRL failed to get the mandatory regulatory health licences renewed because of the infighting between Bakshi and McDonald's. The move, they point out, will render over 1,700 employees jobless. However, a McDonald’s statement said, “We understand that CPRL is retaining the employees of affected restaurants and will pay them their salary during the period of suspension.” Brand strategist Harish Bijoor told ET that unless McDonald's sorts out its legal battle, things might worsen. "Every passing day is a slur on the front-end brand,” he said, adding that there is nothing really bigger than the brand. Meanwhile, McDonald’s in a statement said it is committed to ensuring that the restaurants are operating in full compliance with McDonald’s standards and applicable regulations. “The Eating House Licenses of a number of McDonald's restaurants in Delhi have expired. The Board of Connaught Plaza Restaurants Private Limited is working to obtain the required licenses. Pending this, CPRL is temporarily suspending the operations of the affected restaurants,” the statement read. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Our greatest concern is always for our customers and employees, and we are committed to doing what it takes to ensure compliance, the statement added. The fast-food joint stated India continues to be an important market for McDonald’s and "we are committed to working with CPRL to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

 Many like me were waiting for the fast food source known for its delicious burgers, fries and more. The news had been doing rounds since quite a few years that the fast food giant will set up shop here in India. But, nothing came through. Some sources said another fast food giant was blocking them from entering India. Finally last year Burger King tied up with <keyword id="1644575" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Everstone-Group">Everstone Group</keyword> and on Sunday they opened their first outlet in New Delhi. 
 
Fast Food lovers in Delhi qued up in huge numbers to get a taste of the legendary American fast food sensation on its first day. Burger King is poised to open 11-12 more outlets throughout India in the next 60-90 days. To start with Burger King is serving Chicken, Mutton and Vegetarian Burgers only as Beef is banned in most parts of the country.

Increases Competition McDonanld’s held a nice position till now. They were the unchallenged burger and fries leader with little competition from <keyword id="6376241" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KFC">KFC</keyword>. With Burger King stepping on to the Indian Turf, we might see better service and food from each of the outlets. People will now have a choice and will go to the preferred fast food joint. 
 
Price will play a very important role here. Metro’s might have slightly higher price than tier 2 and 3 towns as spending power is slightly high. Discounts, offers and deals will go live and each of them will try to lure the customer with something new. 
 
Creates Jobs 
With every new multi-national coming to the country the jobs circuits come alive. Burger King will infuse a lot of capital into India that will help the food and beverage sector. Along with the in house jobs at Burger King, there will be more opportunities created in the supporting or the allied fields, such as oil, packaging materials and more. 
 Burger king will open some new avenues in the country and is looking at quickly expanding its reach.  As per a news report by The Economic Times, its starting menu has 11 vegetarian and 10 non-vegetarian products with burger prices going up to about Rs 200 apiece. <keyword id="1646510" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaspal-Singh-Sabharwal">Jaspal Singh Sabharwal</keyword>, MD at <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> firm <keyword id="260134" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Everstone-Capital">Everstone Capital</keyword> that partners Burger King in India, agreed it is not easy to do a quality product at less than Rs 30. Talking to the ET, Wendy's <keyword id="194612" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-president">global president</keyword> <keyword id="2838732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Darrell-van-Ligten">Darrell van Ligten</keyword> said, “"We are starting at Rs 59 because we believe that's where quality comes in.” 
 
"It is a strategic call that the brands take. You can play the sub-Rs 30 game by re-engineering the product build and certain consumers don't mind it because they understand the price-value equation very well. For brands, this means lower per unit profits but much higher penny profits driven by huge traffic and an added opportunity to up-sell other items like fries and beverages," Sabharwal told the ET. 
 
 According to Sabharwal, the price elasticity at lower price points is huge in India. "You can sell more than 700 burgers a day at Rs 27 per unit but this drops to 250 if you increase price to Rs 35 per unit," he says. Prices at Burger King start atRs 35, McDonald's sells burgers upwards of Rs 27, and KFC sells burgers starting at Rs 29. Wendy's Ligten admitted that the firm had lost the first mover advantage in India, but hinted that coming in late has its advantage. "Thanks to them (McDonald's and KFC), we don't have to educate Indian consumers about western QSRs (quick service restaurants)," said Ligten, a former employee at Yum! that owns KFC and <keyword id="58553" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pizza-Hut">Pizza Hut</keyword> chains. 
 The Et report reads, officials at Wendy's, however, feel there are enough consumers for 'quality' products. "People are eating less pizzas and burgers here despite low prices because of the quality of the food," said Jasper Reid, head of <keyword id="748111" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sierra-Nevada">Sierra Nevada</keyword> Restaurants, exclusive franchise partner to Wendy's in India. "New Delhi is no different from <keyword id="6355838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York">New York</keyword>. Consumers are the same everywhere. There's a flight towards quality," he added.  India bans entry of Europeans and Turkey from March 18 to 31 The government on Monday prohibited the entry of passengers from European countries and Turkey as a precautionary measure from March 18 to 31. The government also announced to expand the minimum quarantine for people travelling to India from UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait. Addressing a <a href="https://www.mohfw.gov.in/TravelAdvisory16thMarch.pdf">press conference</a>, minister of health joint secretary Lav Agarwal said, “As a precautionary measure, we are expanding compulsory quarantine for a minimum period of 14 days for passengers coming from or transiting through UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait.” Guidelines for cremating bodies of coronavirus infected deads In order to stop the infection from spreading further, the Central government is framing guidelines for handling bodies of those who die of coronavirus. It came after the controversy over the cremation of a Delhi patient who died of the virus last week. According to the notice, people have been asked to sit at a distance from each other during prayers and also skip one row in between. It also said that those with symptoms of flu should offer prayers at their residences. The AMU has around 20 mosques in the campus and the 20,000 students and teachers who live on the campus, offer prayers at these mosques. Taj Mahal shuts entry amid coronavirus scare The Taj Mahal will be closed for tourists from Tuesday onwards amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. They all are reliable family cars with blue logos. How about KFC, McDonalds, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut and Burger King? They all are global fast food chains with either or both, red and yellow in their identities. And till about a decade ago, it was all fine and dandy till digital content clutter multiplied our brand exposure to a whopping 5000+ on an average day. And that meant the compelling need for acute differentiation over everything else. Let’s look at the topical industry of the year - EdTech. The whole industry came into being post digital burst. And in their identities, whilst catering to the same audiences their approach to <keyword id="9709248" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brand-colors">brand colors</keyword> couldn’t have been more drastically contrasting. Byju, India’s second most valuable startup at $10Bn adorns a bright purple, something which experts used to put in the segment of richness and royalty. Udemy with its coral shade usually seen in lifestyle brands has intentionally moved away from its launch color of grass green. Coursera on the other end of the spectrum is safely engulfed in the reliable blue (think sweet spot between the old and new Facebook color). And finally look at Khan Academy, a blend of sea green and ocean blue. I would argue brands colors are now both category and audience agnostic. And there are four reasons for this major paradigm shift. The Differentiation Paradox: Of course the trained mind might argue the above example is just an anomaly so let’s go back to the automobile category we opened our discussion with to see this point through. In the last decade, the new electric car segment is slowly overpowering old heavyweights. What’s interesting though is as much as these shiny, new kids stand for the same brand promise of blending sleek style, sustainability and automation, their colors try to intentionally stay as apart as possible. Leading the pack Tesla shines in its signature passion red, Faraday Future graces the color of powerplay jet black, Fisker has famously named its brand colors California sunset (orange) and Pacific ocean (blue), the Chinese born Byton decks a more luxurious grey and the adventure friendly Rivian chose orangish yellow. Superdry’s orange boasts of its fun and bold collection, Zara’s black promotes the high street range inspired by luxury fashion weeks. And why not, as the concept of brand colors needed to be synonymous with the “brand experience”. Now though, the audience is aware enough to know that just because Grab taxis are green, they don’t only move with an oil free, electric fleet. Honestly, as long as the story behind your choice of brand color is believable you can paint the canvas with whatever you wish for. Breaking the traditional need for popping colors, Unilever’s new age Talenti Gelato comes in a pure transparent identity to just focus on the product and cut the clutter in the ice cream shelf simultaneously. Ola, India’s answer to Uber uses an exclusive pear color something eponymous with sporty, not exactly a massy cab service using Wagon R &amp; Swift Dzire cars. But does it work? Quite brilliantly actually, the point of differentiation is well made and well reaped. The Niche Maze Before the digital era, market penetration used to be mostly about what the masses demanded. And honestly rightfully so, for neither there was internet to measure the size of niche interests nor a way to get them delivered online to spurt segments scattered all over. And what it has resulted in is making colors more unisex, boldly unique and universally acceptable. Lyft’s Magenta and Dunzo’s Mint Green paves way for many more to come in the coming decade. Let’s try to understand the repercussions of not having niche colors. In the Indian media ecosystem look at the known brands Zee News, NDTV, ABP News, Republic, Aaj Tak, BBC Hindi, The Wire and Firspost ALL have red in their logos. Let’s forget for a second if all these brands have similar personalities, experience or values of the color red. Let’s rather say in 2021 you want to start a media corporation catering to millennials. Don’t you think a berry blue or sunshine yellow will give you a niche identity distinctively apart from all your industry peers and make the consumer immediately associate you with the color no matter on which medium it is used? Reliance Jio certainly would have considered it while starting to slowly move towards Persian blue from its bright red similar to core competitors Airtel and Vodafone. So would have AirBnB while choosing a coral shade over their old blue similar to Booking’s identity. <div type="image" title="Color Logos Case" msid="77389917" hostid="261"></div> Content Overload: One of the most profitable industries inarguably today is the smartphone hub with over 1.5Bn average annual unit sales and still a long way in penetrating the global population. No matter where you are from, you can’t deflect from its plethora of content across platforms. Oppo and Vivo with their selfie camera positioning had planned a budget of INR 2200 crores for the Indian market to dwarf Samsung at its own game. Xiaomi, who finally did overthrow Samsung poured INR 3500 crores last year aiming at an even more aggressive advertising strategy. All pointing towards an inevitable content war subtly numbing the audiences to all headlines and creatives. And hence you see Xiaomi goes with a blazing orange, Oppo graces forest green, One Plus Christmas red, Google Pixel a more humbling grey to Apple’s black while Vivo goes for sailor blue. We aren’t talking about one off anomalies that used to happen in every category like Ferrari’s legendary lemon yellow backdrop whilst Audi, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Jaguar &amp; Lexus all go with the same kind of logo in metallic elements on their cars. These smartphone examples are of all category leaders and none come close to the other’s color no matter how close their audience, personality and brand experience might be. Now one of the major brand identity tests is to create a fictional character with a rich personality to match with your corporation’s values, vision and heart. The catch is, it only works if your audience feels that metaphor coming alive too. Otherwise as you will agree, every horse breeder can sell a Unicorn. And with all due respect the 2020s audiences have evolved from all color tones (and it’s kind of fair if not lovely). Now they are more interested and invested in what you actually do both with your offering and beyond it for the overall society. They know how to filter the frills from the flowers. Typography before color: The formula is minimal typography for maximum impact. Uber tweaked its logo element to a bolder no nonsense font of its name. Indian food delivery pioneers have removed their famous spoon and now just have Zomato written in a thicker and slightly curved style. The legendary Absolut Vodka which had a designer cursive line - ‘Country of Sweden’ in the logo itself has switched to just a navy blue Absolut enjoying the solitude. Visa has removed the card element last decade and even fired the fiery yellow edge to allow blue to engulf all of its typography on this one. Dominos have hit puberty late but by making the name come out of the inclined box they now demand complete attention. IHop, Dunkin... the list honestly keeps going on but the verdict is clear. Clarity of your name in the logo, something that can be read in a nanosecond during a digital post or banner is what works today. And when pure simplicity takes absolute precedent, intricate elements, three tone color schemes and parallel mascots take a backseat. Bold is the new black and clarity is the new color. Millennials demand this world to stop seeing colors, at least without any preconceived prejudices. And if anything the creative industry should be elated with this transformation, one less box to fit into. Let the old labels make way for legacy. If only the world would start having bold brands who can make shirts for men and call it pink. Oh wait, we already do - Pink Shirtmaker, London owned by the Louis Vuitton group. Good news for food lovers! Passengers on board can now order their meals from some of the popular fast-food chains in the country. After <keyword id="158137" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Domino">Domino</keyword>'s, American fast food giant Yum Foods’ chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/KFC-food-samples-contain-harmful-bacteria-Govt-report/articleshow/47829313.cms">KFC</a>), has entered into an agreement with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Getting-Tatkal-tickets-on-IRCTC-would-no-longer-be-a-tough-fight-this-summer-Heres-why/articleshow/47555632.cms">IRCTC</a>) to serve consumers on <keyword id="6360847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Trains">trains</keyword>. 
 
Currently, passengers can avail the service on 12 trains passing through New Delhi railway station and will be expanded to Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad (Kacheguda) and Bangalore (Yeshwantpur) stations over the next 10 days, reported TOI. 
 The service will initially be limited to trains, which lack pantry cars and subsequently be expanded to trains such as, the Rajdhani and Duronto. Passengers will have to visit the <keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword> website or call a toll free number to place their orders. "It's still early days and we will take time to scale up," Dhruv Kaul, CMO at <keyword id="6376241" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="KFC">KFC</keyword> India told TOI. "The sheer number of people that travel by train is an interesting proposition for us." 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Indian-Railways-is-getting-a-makeover-Know-how/articleshow/47673889.cms">Indian Railways</a> operates around 12,500 passenger trains every day with nearly 1.3 crore passengers. In contrast, the largest burger chain in the country, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/McDonalds-goes-healthy-Now-heres-a-first-for-the-junk-food-giant/articleshow/47158676.cms">McDonald's</a>, serves 32 lakh consumers annually. 
 
Despite the potential, the logistics of train delivery — late trains and crowded platforms — is something that fast-food chains are still working on. 
 
Domino's has started its train deliveries in February. The pizza maker has expanded its service to around 200 trains and has managed to sell only around 350 pizzas. "The operations have to be worked on. But we are used to entering new areas," said Kaul. 
 
It has also been learnt that IRCTC is in talks with other chains such as, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pizza-Hut-Is-Holding-Job-Interviews-That-Are-Only-140-Seconds-Long/articleshow/21282634.cms">Pizza Hut</a> and <keyword id="6366667" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Subway">Subway</keyword> for similar services.

<keyword id="16032" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guess">Guess</keyword> where are the chefs of renowned eateries heading? Well, they are shifting kitchens for technologically enriched ones. Food-tech companies like Yumist, ChefSutra, Cook Gourmet, Petoo, and <keyword id="2874548" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bueno-Foods">Bueno Foods</keyword> have in renowned and upcoming chefs from leading hospitality brands to head kitchen operations and curate menus, informs a news report by The Economic Times. 
 
What did the chefs gain? Of course, creative freedom. Besides, they get to build their own kitchen teams and develop menu items based on individual expertise. 
 As per the news report by the ET, Rohan Arora cofounded Gurgaon based Bueno Foods, which offers seven types of international cuisine, withVipul Arora(unrelatedto Rohan) and <keyword id="357931" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Puneet-Jain">Puneet Jain</keyword>, who came with 20 years of experience between them, from top brands including Olive Bar and Kitchen, Intercontinental in Delhi, TheOberoi and McDonalds. 
 "We are not outsourcing or subcontracting core aspects of our business, which is food," Rohan Arora, founder and <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> of <keyword id="2874549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="BuenoFoods">BuenoFoods</keyword> told the financial daily."WhenVipul came on board we had 80% of our menu ready and he changed nearly everything." On a cash basis, <keyword id="2762082" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vipul-Arora">Vipul Arora</keyword> and Puneet Jain get 40-50% lower compensation than the industry average, but the duo has been offered a stake in the company and the two run the entire show at the back-end from kitchen and supply-chain operations including sourcing ingredients. 
 
They were responsible for trialling 2,500 dishes that was narrowed down to 30 items for the company's deliverymenuand400 for its catering and bulk ordering menu, based on demand, customer feed back and operational efficiencies of items that would survive delivery transits. 
 
"I didn't want to work for someone else anymore and I wanted to do things myself. I have freedom here. Money was not a constraint, for me my passion is more important," said Vipul Arora. 
 Similarly, Amit Tyagi, who joined Yumist in March this year, doubled the food-tech company's menu from 20 and continues to add two-three dishes every week. For Tyagi, who has 10 years of experience across Taj Delhi, Pind Balluchi and <keyword id="115321" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Michelin">Michelin</keyword> Star restaurants in <keyword id="6354968" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="London">London</keyword>, the challenge of curating quality daily food under strict cost controls was an attractive proposition. "I don't want a monotonous role for myself," said Tyagi, who also built up a kitchen team of 12. His zeal is reflected on social media, evident in an upswing of people raving about the quality and variety of food ever since the company got Tyagi on board, <keyword id="499896" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alok-Jain">Alok Jain</keyword>, <keyword id="2874713" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="founderand-CEO">founderand CEO</keyword> of Yumist told the ET.

The Quick Service Restaurants or QSRs are undergoing ‘the struggle for existence’ in the Indian market. Blame it on the buying psyche or cut-throat competition, the chains are jostling against each other to win customer’s preferences. Going an extra mile to woo its customer, <keyword id="6377922" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Starbucks">Starbucks</keyword>, world’s largest coffee chain managed by the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata group</keyword> in India has started offering big discounts to attract more customers. As per a news report by The Economic Times, anyone buying before 4 pm will get a voucher for 40% off the bill when she next visits a Starbucks in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Hyderabad or <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> after 6 pm. An additional 10% discount is being offered to those who have a Starbucks loyalty card. 
 
“We are constantly trying to innovate and create interesting offers for our customers," marketing and category director Manmeet Vohra told the Economic Times. "This 'treat receipt' is a concept that has been conceptualised from this thought." Starbucks is not the only cafe chain that's discounting to win customers. 
 
Experts told the financial daily, this is happening because of competing claims for the consumer wallet, not just in terms of brands but the rapidly increasing adoption of eCommerce. It's not just coffee shops that are offering discounts to drum up business-the quick service restaurant or QSR segment is pushing hard on promotions. 
 
Domino's has a 'buy one, get one free' offer on pizzas every Friday, while Pizza Hut has a similar one for Wednesdays. McDonald's offers cash back of up to Rs 50, which customers can avail of on mobile recharge site Freecharge. 
 "The QSR and cafe industry is getting into a circular firing-squad formation, trying to kill each other to grab market share, as if this is the only way to grow in an early-stage growth market," Jaspal Singh Sabharwal, partner at Everstone Capital, local master franchisee for <keyword id="33542" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burger-King">Burger King</keyword> told the ET. 
 
He attributed this to a variety of factors such as sluggish demand, massive pressure to expand and the emergence of the millennials, also known as Gen Y and referring broadly to those born in the 1980-2000 periods or thereabouts. 
 
Rivals cafe chains also offer discounts but these have typically been restricted to either one day a week, specific menu items or are in the range of 20-30%. Costa Coffee ran a limited Happy Hours promotion two years ago to boost custom during non-peak hours (after 8 pm). 
 
 
Sabharwal of Everstone said patience would pay good dividends. "Most global brands are backed by strong balance sheets and usually have a longer term view of the Indian market but this time it is different - they are all in a hurry. Mom and pop restaurants and responsible QSR Chains would suffer in the beginning but the future belongs to them as they prepared to build communities of customers around them. It is already happening in the developed world and India won't be an exception," he said.
