Manufacturers were being forced to up the emission standards to BS-VI by regulators, and buyers were waiting for the new models to hit the street. But then came the coronavirus pandemic and as markets shut down across the world. <div type="image" title="Mahindra sales" msid="76332756" hostid="261"></div> Mahindra’s Chief Executive Officer of automotive division Veejay Ram Nakra earlier said, “Our performance in March has been muted on account of the impact of the current lockdown related to COVID-19 and the disruption in our BS-VI ramp-up plan. The latter was planned between February and March but was affected due to the challenges of parts supply from global and local suppliers. We have been able to clear our BS-IV inventory, but for fewer than 100 vehicles. However, there are many vehicles that are sold, but not yet registered because of the closure of RTOs.” Better than peers Although, in comparison to its peers, the company has seen a speedy recovery— all thanks to its advantage of being India’s largest tractor maker. However, since then, the share price has been on a positive trajectory and recovered almost 66%. All eyes on the road ahead The company said the timely relaxation of the lockdown for the agricultural sector helped the company to ensure the speedy recovery of tractor demand during May. Although, the total tractor sales for the company declined 1% and stood at 24,341 units, as against 24,704 units May last year, any company would settle for it in the current context. Investors hope that the management commentary will remain bullish at least for the tractors segment, as the outlook for cars seems to be a foregone conclusion as estimates, from ratings agency Crisil to the one <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/tata-motors-maruti-and-hyundai-offer-discounts-on-cars/articleshow/76324233.cms">from dealers association</a>, signal nearly a 25% drop in sales this year. Mahindra & Mahindra investors hope tractors will save the day⁠— and the year

<ul><li>Shares of <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> plunged as much as 9% today on lower than expected March quarter earnings.</li><li>Analysts have cut down company estimates as the profit margin of the company remains under pressure due to cost pressures led by higher employee costs and a rise in travel costs.</li><li>As a result, shares of other information technology firms also fell today in an already weak market.</li></ul>IT giant Infosys disappointed investors as the stock of the company plunged nearly 9% on poor Jan-Mar quarter earnings. Stable deal wins and lower than the expected profit margin of the company due to cost pressures led by higher employee costs and rise in travel costs among concerns that impacted Infosys stock. Infosys ADR stock, which trades on the US stock market, slipped 14% in previous 5 sessions because of weak earnings at a time when Indian markets were closed due to holidays. “Infosys' 4Q (March quarter) results missed estimates mainly due to muted growth of 1.2% on quarter constant currency. However, its 13-15% revenue growth guidance for FY23 and all-time high net additions reflect a strong demand outlook,” said analysts at Jefferies. After considering the seasonal weakness in the Jan-Mar quarter, Infosys result was still disappointing. “Infosys' growth in 4Q disappointed even considering the seasonal weakness. Muted growth in its top-2 verticals (BFSI and Retail) and top markets (North America and Europe) and a sharp decline in Life Sciences vertical possibly due to one-off contractual issues resulted in the subdued growth performance,” said a report by Jefferies. <div type="image" title="infosys 2" height="900" width="1200" msid="90906620" hostid="261"></div> Besides, Infosys’ attrition worsened more in the March quarter reaching at 27.7% from 25.5% in the previous quarter. The IT major’s attrition rate is worse in the industry compared to other Indian peers, even more than <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword>’ attrition rate of 17.4% in the same quarter. Moreover, it expects the attrition rate to decline gradually as it also kicks off hikes from April 1. Godrej Group: The Godrej Group announced that it is earmarking a fund of Rs 50 crore for community support and relief initiatives in India. This is an initial outlay and the corporate said that it hopes to supplement it over time. It has been buying and supplying medical equipment and protective supplies for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As a part of the initiative, the group has donated Rs 5 crore to the BMC, donated 115 hospital beds to Maharashtra government hospitals and helped set up a 75-bed quarantine center at the Seven Hills Hospital.  Tesla’s new plan to import completely-built-up (CBU) cars from the United States has come in after the Indian government did not make an exception for Tesla Motors ‘FDI in retail’ which bounds a foreign company to source 30% parts locally. The American company’s expansion into India is a part of its larger mission to cover regions where Tesla still lacks a presence, like Eastern Europe, China and Japan by the end of 2019. Cars and India roads have never been the best fit. However rapid urbanisation and rise in disposable income have given birth to a new breed of Indians who are passionate about cars. With this as a base and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=modi">Narendra Modi’s</a> ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=make+in+india">Make in India’</a> initiative as catalyst, the automobile sector is expected to generate up to $300 billion in annual revenues by 2026, contributing over 12 % to the nation's gross domestic product. 
The Automotive Mission Plan 2016-26 was unveiled with high hopes. However concerns on high taxes and the absence of key reforms like the goods and service tax in a sluggish economy could hurdle the growth. 
 
India’s automotive industry is expected to grow over 70 million units a year by 2026, the project indicates. . The AMP is aimed at mapping the progress of the country's automobile industry and setting its goals over the next decade. Around 23 million vehicles were produced in India in the year ended on March 31, 2015. The industry is estimated to be worth $74 billion now. 
 
"The biggest challenge (to achieve the aim) is going to be of infrastructure. In India, the second biggest cost that we have to bear is in logistics and transportation, which is about 15 %," said Ravindra Pisharody, executive director, commercial vehicles, at Tata Motors. "However, the projection made is quite achievable." 
 
 As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the key achievements are investments in excess of Rs 1,60,000 crore and creation of jobs - the target is 35 million by the end of 2016. Besides, the industry is on course to hit the base-case target of Rs 5,49,000 crore revenue. Speaking at SIAM's annual convention in New Delhi, its president, Vikram Kirloskar, highlighted the potential of the industry, but also the risks it is facing. 
 
"There are speed breakers in the form of slow government policies with no clear roadmap on GST and high taxes imposed on the auto industry ... the cumulative burden of taxes to customers on cars goes up to 84 %, making the industry highly uncompetitive," he said. 
 
Others raised concerns over delayed reforms. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</a> Executive Director Pawan Goenka said political stalemate was pushing several initiatives and this could derail economic recovery. Hero MotoCorp Chairman Pawan Munjal said: "We hope the government policy frame should improve in tune with time as we move ahead and is move in the right direction in the long-term with key reforms being addressed at the earliest."
