Accordingly, the Board has appointed D <keyword id="120337" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sundaram" source="Orion">Sundaram</keyword> as the Lead Independent Director of the Company, effective Thursday based on the recommendation of the 'Nomination and Remuneration Committee'. Sundaram has been on the Board of Infosys since 2017. Sundaram serves on the Audit Committee, Risk Management Committee, <keyword id="16919243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stakeholders-relationship-committee" source="Orion">Stakeholders Relationship Committee</keyword>, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, and Cybersecurity Risk Sub-Committee. This is thanks to the growth in value after he launched telecom services with Jio. He is followed by Gautam Adani and Hinduja Brothers. Interestingly, the list featured six fresh faces — Byju Raveendran of Byju’s, Manohar Lal and Madhusudan Agarwal of Haldiram Snacks, Rajesh Mehra of fittings company Jaguar, and Samprada Singh of Alkem Laboratories.  Yet another pharmaceutical company owner Leena Tiwari of USV India was ranked 71 on the Forbes list, with a net worth of $1.92 billion. The company, which was started as a joint venture with Revlon in 1961 is known for its diabetic and cardiovascular drugs.

Biocon chairman <keyword id="6413985" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiran-Mazumdar-Shaw">Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw</keyword> has called for relaxing rules for start-ups to help them flourish, stating that there are several "hidden regulations" in the governments new policy. 

	"Even though the policy sounds very good, there are a lot of hidden regulations in that," she said at a session titled Beyond Jugaad, Making India Work, during the Jaipur Literature Festival here.
 She was in conversation with <keyword id="6355001" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FICCI">FICCI</keyword> secretary general A Didar Singh, former <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> chairman D R Mehta, <keyword id="106216" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ford-India">Ford India</keyword> Chief Nigel Harris and author John Elliot. 

	Shaw said that although Make in India was a good strategy, the more important concern was to concentrate on finding manufacturing opportunities of the future.

	Mazumdar-Shaw also stressed for a reboot on the way different areas like manufacturing were regulated, citing the examples of IT and the Biotech sectors.
 

	"We have to reboot the way we regulate these sectors, whether it is manufacturing or any other sector. We cannot be regulating any sector the way we have been doing all these years," she said.
 

	"The IT sector has been a very successful sector and Biotech up to a point was very successful sector until it was not being regulated because it was flying under the radar. The moment regulators started entering this sector, you saw all the challenges that came up," she added.
 

	Mazumdar-Shaw also added that there was a need for promoting and creating an ecosystem to nurture innovation, stating that even though several innovations come out of the country, they fail because they are not ascribed value at the international level.
 

	"There is a huge standoff between business and science. While business thinks scientists are not doing enough, the scientists have limited market exposure. This is bad for the country," she said.
 

	Former SEBI chairman of Jaipur Foot fame D R Mehta pointed out that new jobs would not be created through manufacturing, but would come from the services sector.

	Mazumdar-Shaw also said the world is now talking about the fourth industrial revolution and India must look towards the future "sunrise areas".
 

	"The new sunrise areas are artificial intelligence, renewable energy and automation. We must exploit these new sectors, especially renewable energy. The opportunity is immense," she said.

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Top industrialists Anand Mahindra, Harsh Mariwala and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have condemned violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night, saying such acts cannot be tolerated and the perpetrators must be hunted down swiftly.
Speaking up against the violence, Marico Ltd Chairman Harsh Mariwala tweeted, "Coming from the land of non-violence, it's unbecoming of us to witness and encourage these acts of violence. Extremely hurt seeing last evening's news".
Expressing similar views, in a tweet late last evening Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said, "It doesn't matter what your politics are. It doesn't matter what your ideology is. It doesn't matter what your faith is. If you're an Indian, you cannot tolerate armed, lawless goons. Those who invaded JNU tonight must be traced &amp; hunted down swiftly &amp; given no quarter..."
Likewise, reacting to a video of an injured student who claimed she was beaten up, Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw tweeted, "This is unpardonable. Violence cannot be condoned".
Violence broke out at JNU on Sunday night as a group of masked people armed with sticks attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in the police.
RPG Enterprises Chairman drew parallels between India and Australia, saying India is caught in "religious bushfires".
"Hearing me pray for Australia, for its people, for its 500 million animals that have died since the #bushfires, my little one asked why are you not praying for India where there are religious bushfires lit all over the country and students being attacked mercilessly?" Goenka wrote on his Twitter handle.
Rajan Anandan, former head of Google India, who now is associated with venture capital fund Sequoia, also retweeted Mahindra's tweet.

"I think it was a very tough time for me initially because I have to overcome that credibility challenge of being a young girl who no-one took seriously," said Shaw. Further boosting investors’ confidence in the company, <keyword id="55796" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kiran-Mazumdar-Shaw">Kiran Mazumdar Shaw</keyword>’s biotechnology major <keyword id="158724" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Biocon-Ltd">Biocon Ltd</keyword> has appointed scientist and Nobel laureate Dr Vijay Kuchroo and industry veteran Dr Jeremy M Levin as the additional independent directors of the company. 
	 
	Currently, Dr Kuchroo is the Samuel L Wasserstrom professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, senior scientist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as well as the co-firector of the Center for Infection and Immunity, Brigham Research Institutes, Boston. 
	 
	“I welcome Vijay to the Biocon board. As a member of Biocon’s Clinical Advisory Board, Vijay has been providing valuable inputs on the company’s R&amp;D programs in auto-immunity. His scientific expertise in autoimmunity and oncology will help us as we seek to bring our R&amp;D programs to patients globally,” said Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, chairman of Biocon Ltd. 
	 
	On his appointment as the additional independent director, Dr Kuchroo said, “Biocon is a dynamic biopharmaceutical company with an eye on the future. The company’s research into innovative biologics – unique among Indian companies - has the potential to not only benefit patients in India, but also globally. Currently, he is the chairman of New York-based private company, Ovid Therapeutics Inc. China has the lead closely followed by the Indian project underway at Oxford China is currently leading the charge to develop a coronavirus vaccine. <a href="https://www.who.int/who-documents-detail/draft-landscape-of-covid-19-candidate-vaccines">Cansino Biological</a> and the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology are using an Ebola-based candidate to develop a adenovirus type 5 vector coronavirus vaccine, currently in Phase-1 and Phase-2 of clinical trials. Another Chinese candidate vaccine is being developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products in partnership with <keyword id="522337" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sinopharm">Sinopharm</keyword>, which is also conducting Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials simultaneously. Coming in second is the University of Oxford, which is using a non-replicating viral vector approach based on MERS, influenza, TB, chikungunya, Zika and others to develop its coronavirus vaccine. New Delhi, Jan 6 () Biotechnology major Biocon on Monday said private equity firm True North will invest Rs 536.25 crore to acquire 2.44 per cent stake in its arm Biocon Biologics, valuing the subsidiary at Rs 21,450 crore on a pre-money equity basis.
 The board of Biocon Biologics India Ltd has approved a primary equity investment by True North. As per the terms of the proposed agreement, True North will invest Rs 536.25 crore and will eventually translate to a 2.44 per cent minority stake in the biosimilars business after all restructuring, including the filed merger of Biocon Research Ltd with Biocon Biologics, Biocon said in a filing to the BSE.
 This values Biocon Biologics at Rs 21,450 crore or around USD 3 billion, on a pre-money equity basis, it added.
 "This investment is an endorsement of the value that Biocon Biologics has demonstrated as a global biosimilars player, having commercialised three of its molecules in developed markets such as the EU, the US, Japan and Australia," Biocon Chairperson and MD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said.
 This is at an important inflection point as, "we gain commercial success with our first wave of Biosimilar products and invest in the long term through broadening our pipeline, expanding our manufacturing capacity and increasing our commercial footprint," she added.
 In similar vein, Biocon Biologics CEO Christiane Hamacher said the investment by True North in Biocon Biologics reflects a high level of conviction in Biocon Biologics' status as a global frontrunner in biosimilars that is leveraging its large-scale manufacturing capabilities to shift the access paradigm for these life-saving therapies.
 "True North has had a long successful association with Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and the entire Biocon team and see them as pioneers and leaders in specialised niches," True North partner Satish Chander said.
 True North is happy to associate with them for the third time through this investment in Biocon Biologics. Biosimilars is a fast-growing industry that addresses a fundamental need of bringing affordability to specialised effective biologic products, he added.
 Biocon Biologics has a product pipeline of 28 molecules, including 11 with Mylan, several with Sandoz, and is developing many independently.
 Shares of Biocon Ltd were trading at Rs 287.40 per scrip on the BSE, down 4.53 per cent from its previous close. AKT HRS

New Delhi, Apr 18 () COVID-19 will reboot the world into virtual reality and after the crisis, work from home models are likely to continue and business travel is likely to be curtailed as virtual meetings have proved to be just as effective, Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Saturday said. In a blog post, she said mobile and internet banking have also seen a surge since the viral outbreak. The new world order will now become a virtual reality, she added. "The seismic events unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic will have a powerful impact on the world we live in, changing it in ways we had never imagined were possible. The economic damage is likely to be unprecedented," Mazumdar-Shaw said. The world economy, worth USD 90 trillion at the start of the current financial year, would have lost USD 5 trillion and moved into recession by the time the next financial year starts, she added. "COVID-19 is the reboot button that will trigger a system-wide overhaul. A year from now, the world we will live in will be very different. It will impact how we live, how we work, and how we use technology," Mazumdar-Shaw said. To quote a recent McKinsey report, "In this unprecedented new reality, we will witness a dramatic restructuring of the economic and social order in which business and society have traditionally operated," she added. This COVID-19 outbreak is a lesson that technology has many faces and being besotted with only one application of computational science is dangerous, Mazumdar-Shaw said. "For humanity to survive, we will need a multi-disciplinary approach to advancing science and technology, combining biotechnology, biomedical technologies, biological sciences, environmental sciences, etc," she added. The novel coronavirus has exposed the huge shortcomings in public healthcare systems, especially in developed countries where they have largely remained static since World War II, she added. Mazumdar-Shaw said the governments will have to bring in policies to address essential healthcare infrastructure, strategic reserves of key supplies, and contingency planning for medical equipment, diagnostics, drugs and vaccines. "COVID-19 will also cast a long shadow on our social and cultural lives," she added. What repercussions these changes will have on the shape of human society only time can tell, Mazumdar-Shaw said. The post-COVID-19 world is unlikely to look like the "normal" we have grown accustomed to in the recent years, she added. "Ultimately, the greatest lesson that COVID-19 can teach humanity is that we are all in this together, that what affects a single person anywhere affects everyone everywhere, that as homo sapiens we need to think and act unitedly rather than worrying about race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, economic status, and such artificial groupings," Mazumdar-Shaw said.
