The economy was liberalised, the IT industry started booming, a telecom revolution was underway, a successful nuclear test was conducted, and the emergence of strong regional parties gave voice to the politically weak sections. But on May 3, 1999, as Pakistani intrusion was reported at the Kargil borders, India was on the cusp of losing a decade-long progress to an unprovoked war. This day marks the culmination of the <keyword id="20143432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kargil-War" source="keywords">Kargil War</keyword>, a conflict that tested the nation's mettle and forged a legacy of heroism. Addressing the 25th celebrations of the Kargil War victory, <keyword id="6354814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-narendra-modi" source="Orion">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> said that the Kargil War win is neither the victory of any government in power nor of any political group, it is the heritage and the victory of 140 crore people of India. <h2>The genesis</h2>Despite signing the Lahore Declaration in February 1999 for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, a covert infiltration by Pakistani troops into the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir in May 1999 triggered a crisis. The covert movement of the Pak army helped them position themselves at strategically advantageous, high-altitude positions. As temperatures plummeted and oxygen levels dwindled, the rugged mountains posed immense logistical challenges to the ground forces. Yet, the Indian Army, driven by patriotism and a relentless determination to protect the nation's sovereignty, pressed on. <h2>Heroes of the Kargil War</h2>The Kargil War produced a pantheon of heroes whose bravery continues to inspire generations. Captain <keyword id="20211435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikram-batra" source="keywords">Vikram Batra</keyword>, with his iconic battle cry "Yeh Dil Mange More," led his troops to capture Point 4875, a pivotal victory. Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten by a country on its path to glory on a global stage. <h2>A continued tragedy</h2>The Kargil War left behind a deadly legacy along with long-term trauma among the local residents and the defence personnel who fought valiantly. As per a TOI report, unexploded bombs scattered across the region continue to pose a significant threat to the local population. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. These incidents have resulted in multiple casualties in the past several years, including the tragic death of a young child. Despite the passage of 25 years, the Army remains actively engaged in defusing these dangerous remnants of war. After all, no army can win a fight without its <keyword id="434926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="defence-equipments">defence equipments</keyword>, and this Kanpur-based company, which now calls itself as one of the biggest arms exporter in India, played a crucial role in providing Indian Army what was required. Take for example the requirement of small-sized mountain shoes, which the <keyword id="671353" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gorkha-Regiment">Gorkha regiment</keyword>, known for their mountain-climbing abilities, required to take part in a mission. While no other company could commit to the huge order because of lack of time, <keyword id="57367" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MKU">MKU</keyword> got the emergency order of 10,000 mountaineering boots, even though it had a monthly capacity of 8,000 units at that time. "As the soldiers were being moved to the battle front, we completed the order working day and night before the start of attack. The order was the turning point for our company and our efforts were very much appreciated by the Army after the war," said MKU MD Neeraj Gupta. Since then, MKU has come a long way, and now manufactures a wide range of defence products including bullet-proof helmets and jackets, body armours and night-vision devices, supplying military equipment to more than 100 countries. It has also set up a manufacturing and testing facility in Germany, other than having three local units in Kanpur and Fatehpur.

Meet 37-year-old Jitendra; he has written around 3,000 postcards to families of soldiers who laid their lives, fighting with the enemies. 
 “I have been writing these letters since the <keyword id="152249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kargil-war">Kargil war</keyword>. I think that being in the army is a tough job, and it is the country’s duty to respect those martyrs who sacrifice their lives for us. There are many people who have been living under the dark clouds of grief after losing their loved ones, and we should fulfil our moral duties towards those families,” he told The Better India. 
 
Jitendra, a resident of Kutkheda village in Rajasthan, was inspired to write and pay respect to those families as his father was also a soldier with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Army</a>. 
 
 
Jitendra wanted to join the army as well, but could not do so. 
 
“My family thinks I am crazy to be doing something that gives no returns in spite of coming from a middle class background, but I am determined and will not leave this path till the end,” he told The Better India. 
 
Jitendra has details of nearly 20,000 martyrs, with their names, numbers, unit details, addresses, etc, which he picked up from local newspapers of martyr’s home towns.

Meet Jitendra-a security guard who spent 17 yrs writing letters to families of martyred soldiers

New Delhi, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Wednesday as Opposition parties continued to protest on the <keyword id="17320926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manipur-issue" source="Orion">Manipur issue</keyword>. The protests began soon after the House paid tributes to soldiers who had died in the Kargil war. Some members were also heard shouting slogans such as 'We want justice'. Amid the din, three questions and their supplementaries were taken up during Question Hour that lasted less than 20 minutes. As the protests continued, proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon Earlier in the morning, Birla paid tributes to those who died in the Kargil war on the occasion of the 24th Kargil Vijay Diwas. The House also stood in silence briefly as a mark of respect for the departed souls. With the deadlock over the Manipur violence continuing, the 26-member opposition alliance INDIA is planning to submit a notice for a no-confidence motion against the government in Lok Sabha. Manipur issue: Lok Sabha adjourns amid opposition protests

<keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword>'s former military ruler General (retd.) <keyword id="44240" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pervez-musharraf" source="Orion">Pervez Musharraf</keyword>, the architect of the Kargil War in 1999, died on Sunday in Dubai after a prolonged illness, according to media reports. <keyword id="17431" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="musharraf" source="Orion">Musharraf</keyword>, 79, was suffering from amyloidosis, a rare disease caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein called amyloid in organs and tissues throughout the body, according to his family. General (retd) Musharraf died at a hospital in Dubai, Geo News quoted his family as saying. He had been undergoing treatment at the American Hospital Dubai, the channel reported. The Express Tribune newspaper also said that Musharraf, who had been living in Dubai since 2016, breathed his last on Sunday, The general was the main architect of the Kargil War that took place months after then Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nawaz-sharif" source="Orion">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> signed a historic peace accord with his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lahore. After his failed misadventure in Kargil, Musharraf deposed the then Prime Minister Sharif in a bloodless coup in 1999 and ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008 in various positions – first as the chief executive of Pakistan and later as the President. In March 2014, Musharraf was indicted for suspending the Constitution on November 3, 2007. In December 2019, a special court handed Musharraf a death sentence in the high treason case against him. The former military ruler left the country in March 2016 for Dubai to seek medical treatment. Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943 in Delhi. His family moved from New Delhi to Karachi in 1947. He joined the <keyword id="37837" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pakistan-army" source="Orion">Pakistan Army</keyword> in 1964 and was a graduate of the Army Staff and Command College, Quetta.

The Glonass system has been developed by Russia, Galileo by the European Union and BeiDou by China. Calling the inclusion of NavIC on iPhones a significant achievement for the country, the government is considering making it a standard practice that all devices using GPS technology should have NavIC-powered chipsets inside, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, said on Thursday. "We're planning to make it a standard practice that all devices using GPS technology should have NAVIC-powered chipsets or NAVIC chips inside. When you look at the IT PLI scheme this time, it includes incentives for system designers and manufacturers who incorporate Indian-designed chips into their products," said Chandrasekhar. Interestingly, smartphones powered by chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek have supported NavIC for a long time, going back to 2020. Few devices from Android smartphone makers also support NavIC. India, in its 2021 satellite navigation draft policy highlighted the importance of NavIC and its plans to promote the technology. The Indian Navy previously used the venerable <a href="http://www.military-today.com/aircraft/bae_sea_harrier.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sea Harrier</a>.At about 930 feet long, Vikramaditya displaces about 44,000 tons and can carry 36 aircraft, mainly MiG-29Ks and a combination of <a href="http://www.military-today.com/helicopters/kamov_ka31.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ka-31</a>, <a href="https://weaponsystems.net/system/1288-Kamov%20Ka-27PL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ka-28</a>, and <a href="http://www.military-today.com/helicopters/dhruv.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HAL Dhruv</a> helicopters. It has a crew of 1,600, a top speed of 28 knots, and a range of about 7,000 nautical miles.Vikrant, meanwhile, measures about 860 feet in length, displaces around 43,000 tons, and can carry 30 aircraft. That jet, the Twin-Engine Deck Based Fighter, or TEDBF, is <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/twin-engine-carrier-based-fighter-for-navy-could-be-inducted-by-2031-32/article66124792.ece" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the early stages</a> of development and is intended to replace India's MiG-29Ks around 2031.India is also looking to acquire 26 new carrier-borne aircraft from another country to use until the TEDBF arrives. Berthing space for 800 troops was added, and helicopters became Hermes' primary aircraft.Hermes was refit again in the early 1980s, when the threat from Soviet submarines prompted the Royal Navy to repurpose the ship for anti-submarine warfare.
