As temperatures plummeted and oxygen levels dwindled, the rugged mountains posed immense logistical challenges to the ground forces. Yet, the Indian Army, driven by patriotism and a relentless determination to protect the nation's sovereignty, pressed on. <h2>Heroes of the Kargil War</h2>The Kargil War produced a pantheon of heroes whose bravery continues to inspire generations. Captain <keyword id="20211435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikram-batra" source="keywords">Vikram Batra</keyword>, with his iconic battle cry "Yeh Dil Mange More," led his troops to capture Point 4875, a pivotal victory. Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten by a country on its path to glory on a global stage. <h2>A continued tragedy</h2>The Kargil War left behind a deadly legacy along with long-term trauma among the local residents and the defence personnel who fought valiantly. As per a TOI report, unexploded bombs scattered across the region continue to pose a significant threat to the local population. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. These incidents have resulted in multiple casualties in the past several years, including the tragic death of a young child. Despite the passage of 25 years, the Army remains actively engaged in defusing these dangerous remnants of war. Leh dips 13 degrees below freezing with dense fog around Jammu City

Leh, Nov 25 () Four more COVID-related fatalities pushed the <keyword id="9302947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="death-toll-due">death toll due</keyword> to the disease to 105 in Ladakh, while the virus caseload crossed the 8,000-mark in the <keyword id="6356438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-territory">Union Territory</keyword> after 83 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, officials said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a civil society-sponsored weeklong lockdown in Leh entered the third day with all shops and business establishments except pharmacies remaining closed and transport off the roads. All the four new COVID-related deaths were reported from Leh, taking the death toll due to the disease in the district to 64, the officials said. <keyword id="10329624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kargil-district-accounts">Kargil district accounts</keyword> for the remaining 41 COVID-related deaths in the Union Territory. Kargil, May 15 () With discharge of two COVID-19 patients including a two-year-old boy, Kargil district has been declared free of the novel coronavirus, officials said.The patients were discharged from the dedicated COVID-19 Hospital Kurbathang here as per the protocol after they tested negative twice, the officials said.Besides these two cured COVID-19 patients, six other suspected cases who tested negative were also discharged, they said.Ladakh had recorded a total of 42 cases, of whom 21 had declared cured earlier and subsequently discharged. With two more patients recovering, 19 active cases are in Leh district and their condition is stable.Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan congratulated the people of Kargil, administration, doctors, paramedics, and all frontline warriors for their tireless efforts to make Kargil COVID-19 free and appealed to the people to strictly adhere to the SOPs and guidelines as the threat posed by the disease still exists."With the influx of local residents in thousands, there is increased risk of COVID-19 infection and the responsibility for strictly adhering to preventive measures and adherence to SOPs is of paramount importance and every individual has to play his part," he said.Khan said over 12,000 people including students, who are stranded outside Ladakh, are expected to reach Kargil in the coming days, while thousands have already returned from different parts of the country and abroad in the past two weeks. "Over 300 stranded pilgrims in Iran are also expected to be evacuated shortly," he said.Meanwhile, the evacuation of stranded passengers of Zanskar Sub Division from Jammu has almost completed as all the 950 registered persons, including students, have been evacuated to their hometown, the officials said.They said efforts are on to evacuate 200 Zanskari students and 93 pilgrims from Manali, Dharamsala, and Rewalsar in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Anwar lived in Kargil during the India-Pakistan war of 1999. He wants the students of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir to look beyond professional courses like engineering and MBBS. “I am thinking of approaching the J&amp;K government and setting up an academy to help young boys and girls pursue MBA,” he said. According to him, Kargil students are unaware of coaching institutes for MBA entrance exams. "I want to open an academy in Kargil to train kids to crack CAT,” he told The tImes of India. Anwar graduated from IIM Ahmedabad — one of the leading MBA institutes in India — said that he witnessed a cultural shift, moving from Kargil to Ahmedabad. He missed security forces on the roads. Anwar secured an on campus job in the metal and mining company Vedanta at an annual salary of ₹30 lakhs. He is currently handling the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities of the group, to promote football learning centres in Rajasthan and Goa. Their arsenal is weak too, says a Comptroller and Auditor General report. The supplies of necessities like snow goggles and boots are so low that they are forced to use old and recycled ones. The report tabled in Lok Sabha said that the requirements were delayed up to four years. Siachen is always covered with snow at a very low temperature of -15C. It is impossible for humans to survive without the right kind of protection. Boots, goggles and clothes Between November 2015 and September 2016, a shortage of multipurpose boots, which can protect feet in temperatures of -55 degrees Celsius, forced personnel to opt for recycled boots, CAG report said. The report also showed a shortage of 750 snow goggles on account of “poor supplies” from the Ordnance Factory, Dehradun. The CAG audit found out a deficiency of 24-100% and 41-100% in Extreme Cold Clothing and Equipment (ECC&amp;E) at two depots, where the Northern Command Army Headquarters Reserve of such items is stocked. Food in short supply and sub-standard products Apart from basic amenities, lack of food is also affecting these soldiers. “This defeats the very purpose of constituting the empowered committee besides undermining the objectives of annual provisioning reviews. There was also inadequate special ration for these soldiers, affecting their calorie intake by 82%,” the report said. The report said that face masks procured for the troops as “substandard”. It also pointed to possible irregularities in the procurement of 31,779 “sub-standard sleeping bags” at an extra cost of ₹7.74 crore. A pilot project was also organized to improve housing conditions at a higher altitude for the troops. But it failed, according to CAG. Leh, Jun 13 () Ladakh recorded the highest single-day spike of 198 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking the total tally cases in the Union territory to 437, officials said as a strict lockdown was reimposed June 30 in Kargil which has the most active cases. All the fresh cases were reported from Kargil, where restrictions were imposed again on an order of district magistrate Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary, they said. Ladakh has so far reported one death while 68 people have been cured of the disease and discharged from the hospitals. "The number of active cases in the region stands at 368, including 300 in Kargil. Condition of all of them is stable," an official said. Union Territory administration declared both Kargil and Leh districts as "red zones" in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases. Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary, who is also chairman of Kargil district disaster management authority, had on Friday evening convened an emergency meeting of the magistrates and police officials and stressed on strict implementation of COVID-19 restrictions in all parts of the district in view of the spike in the number of cases. Movement of medical staff should be allowed while those of vehicles with essential commodities should be subject to the one plus one formula, he said. "Lockdown restrictions will be tightened in view of the spike in COVID-19 cases. These restrictions will continue to remain in force till June 30," Choudhary said. However, he said, the decision can be reviewed as the situation unfolds in the coming days and further relaxations can be given if there is an improvement. Emphasizing on the need to further strengthen precautionary measures, he urged the people to follow the guidelines religiously. "The administration will adopt zero tolerance against those violating the SOPs and guidelines and they will be dealt with strictly," Choudhary warned. Regarding the conduct of official work in Government offices, the District Magistrate said all offices will remain open and employees will be allowed to attend their offices by showing identity cards. "Working with a continued sense of moral responsibility and sensitivity and collective efforts are the only solution to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus so that we can overcome this crucial situation," he said.
