The aim is now not only to go deeper into the country but also start conversations around important issues related to pregnancy. We recently spoke to Joy Chatterjee, General Manager, Sales &amp; Marketing, Mankind Pharma who told us their strategy to grow the brand so far, its marketing game plan and how it aims to expand its presence in different markets by going deeper into the country and by starting conversations around sensitive topics around pregnancy to sensitize and educate people. Excerpts: Q) What has helped Prega News capture the maximum market share in the category? Prega News is a <a name="_GoBack"></a>rapid detection kit that gives accurate results in 5 minutes and at the same time is convenient to use. The best part of the product is that a women can test urine samples anytime of the day. These factors are the foundational core of the product. Over the years, we have built the credibility of the product brand regarding its accuracy and convenience. This has benefited us, and whenever expecting mothers buy Prega News, they do it because there is an assurance that it will give truthful results. With this approach, we focused extensively on ATL and BTL activities. In the beginning, our objective was to spread awareness among the target audience, and focus on the distribution and supply chain so people easily get the product. Also, we hold the market share by 80%. The only way left for a brand to grow is by expanding the market itself and, thus, getting more and more women to use the product confidently. Q) The current penetration of the category is 17% which Prega News aims increase in the next five years. What will be your strategy to make this target a reality? We are building awareness in rural areas, focusing on social messaging with the intent of bringing positive change in society. We have launched several campaigns on different issues that need to change. We drive a strong presence in the urban market. It has become a go-to product amongst the target audience. As the expansion of the product is one of our main priorities, we are focusing on regional markets. Earlier, we faced issues in connecting with people and were thinking of the best way of reaching rural women. We realized that the influence of regional channels is growing tremendously and now run different media plans and brand ambassadors for different regions. We have got a lot of success with regional channels. The consumers relate well with them which leads to better engagement for us. Q) What are a few milestones for Prega News in the last few years? What has given you an edge over the competition? Through our campaigns, we have spoken on issues surrounding soon-to-be mothers – workplace bias towards pregnant women or new moms, physical issues faced by expectant mothers, gender discrimination, and many more. Last year, we completed 10 years in the Indian market and launched a digital campaign, #PregaMoment. The product has been growing in healthy double digits annually. We witnessed a steep spike of over 20% in its demand during the COVID lockdown. It’s the trust factor that gives us the edge over others. Q) How has your marketing strategy helped you stand out? What role did popular faces like Kareena Kapoor and Anushka Sharma play in building brand Prega News? In the preliminary days, we used to release ads in newspapers and magazines to target women because that time pregnancy detection card was not available very easily. We launched this product in the OTC category to make it easily available. Our advertising journey started in 2010 with our first brand ambassador, <keyword id="18591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neha-marda" source="Orion">Neha Marda</keyword>. The message targeted at married women was simple – that it will take just 5 minutes to clear all doubts about their missed periods with the Prega News detection card. There are two parts to the Prega News advertising journey – the first being functional, which educates people about the tangible benefits of the product. In the beginning, this was done using semi-celebrity moms and later with big celebrity mothers and now we are focusing on regional actors and mom influencers. We have adopted a ‘Social Good’ content strategy as the second pillar of our communication, where we have highlighted many issues in our different campaigns. Q) How are you going deeper into the country? What are your expansion plans? Our expansion strategy is to reach every market in the country. We have realised that if we need to make women aware of pregnancy detection cards, we will need to associate with local people, NGO’s, Asha workers and others where we can talk to women about different things surrounding a pregnancy. To fulfil the same, we’re focusing on our distribution channels. The markets are further segmented as per the supply channels ranging from drugstores, pharmacies, online retail, supermarkets/hypermarkets, and Fertility and Gynaecology Clinics. In the last year, we have received a great response from the West Bengal market. Our focus is now on strengthening our reach in different states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, amongst others. We will extensively focus on rural areas like Mirzapur, Unnao and Kannauj, to name a few. Q) Are most of your consumers in larger cities or do you see a demand in Tier II &amp; Tier III cities too? Brand awareness is pretty high among urban populations. However, we are witnessing a positive trend in Tier II and Tier III cities too. People are becoming aware of the product and have started considering buying the pregnancy detection card but there is still some hesitancy around using the product among some people. We’re building awareness through many initiatives, so more and more women open up to using the product. Q) Looking ahead, what will your marketing strategy look like? We are quite prominent on TV, Digital, and OOH. We focus on a 360 degree marketing channel. From a reach perspective- there is no active brand on TV and our SOV is almost 95%. Television has helped us in reaching the masses. We are doing branded content, and focusing on digital mediums as well, be it by roping in mom influencers or creating a dialogue among the TG. Regional campaigns have been our strength and have helped us establish a connection with consumers by interacting with them in their language. In 2019, we ventured into the southern market and roped in celebrities like Kareena Kapoor and <keyword id="13060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="priyamani" source="Orion">Priyamani</keyword> simultaneously to capture both the northern and southern markets. Also, this year we have roped in Kajal Agarwal as the face of the South market. In the future too, we will keep this momentum going. There are new campaigns in the pipeline, which will go live at the right time. Q) Apart from TVCs, how have you been educating/sensitizing people about the complications around pregnancy, or infertility (since this was a topic you touched on in your last campaign)? Yes, we want to sensitize people on the pregnancy-related issues. In India, there is a stereotypical mindset when it comes to adopting a child or opting for IVF or surrogacy. There is a need to create a dialogue on breaking stereotypes around infertility issues, as this is a common issue prevalent among couples nowadays. Around 10-15% of all married couples face a problem in conceiving a child today. With changing times, we need to become more progressive and inclusive, to be able to bring about a positive cultural change. Hence, this is the first step towards the change. Going further, we also have plans to rope in gynaecologists who can impart knowledge on the importance of family-planning, the use of contraceptives and pregnancy detection cards and the importance of health and nutrition during pregnancy. Our objective is to initiate a healthy conversation around important issues in society.

Similarly, even for brands, the lockdown came with its own set of teachings. To most brands, it has taught resilience and agility. For a lot of leaders, it has been a lesson in empathy. And as the country slowly opens up, brands are slowly but steadily opening up to a new world order where things are very different from how they were till a few months back. The focus is now on ensuring the safety of all stakeholders, to make sure that all norms are followed. Its safe to say that the pandemic has completely redefined marketing. In an attempt to understand the changes that happened at an organizational level for Puma, we recently caught up with Abhishek Ganguly, General Manager, PUMA India and Southeast Asia who not only told us how they are preparing for the new normal, he also spoke about what helped them sail through during these adverse times. As the lockdown is getting relaxed, the brand has seen a steady increase in the footfall and conversions at their stores. Moreover, its e-commerce business has almost seen a doubling in the last 3-4 weeks, which is a positive sign and gives hope for revival. Ganguly also told us his learnings as a leader and how they are working on future-proofing the business. Excerpts: Q) Retail, as we have known it, might see a complete overhaul. How are you, as a brand, preparing to adapt to this changing consumer behavior? As we brave the road to recovery and navigate through the new normal, we are witnessing a major shift in the shopping behavior of consumers. We’re focused on creating a safe and hygienic environment at our stores to instill confidence in the minds of our customers. We have put in place the required cleaning and hygiene protocols across all our stores and facilities. Our retail staff has been trained to ensure social distancing norms are followed. Some of the measures that we are following at our stores include: <ul><li>A cap on the maximum number of consumers inside the store at any given point</li><li> Contactless payments and billing</li><li> Hourly sanitization of store fixtures including cash desk, trial rooms, door knobs and hangers</li><li> Contactless temperature screening at the store entrance</li><li> Making masks mandatory</li><li> Sanitizing hands at the entrance and at all touchpoints across the store</li><li> Demarcated areas/ layouts that allow for social distancing within the store</li></ul> Q) E-commerce will get a huge boost as people might prefer online deliveries over physically going to showrooms. Are you increasing focus on your online presence? E-commerce has always been a big priority for us at PUMA and we embarked on this journey many years ago. In the current situation, online is of course a more convenient option for consumers to shop. Having said that, over the last few weeks, footfalls and conversions in stores have also increased manifold. E-commerce business is growing very fast – over the last 3-4 weeks we have seen our business almost doubling on this channel. Q) Have there been any interesting trends you’ve noticed during the lockdown? Any segment that has witnessed more growth than others? With increased focus on fitness, has there been an increase in that segment? People are taking steps in the right direction to build their immunity and lead a healthier lifestyle. Over the last few months, we have seen people take to fitness more than ever before and it has now become a way of life for many. There is demand for Fitness and Training merchandise because of this. Also with Work from Home becoming a norm, athletic leisurewear has strong demand. I feel sportswear and athleisure would be one of the categories which would have quick revival. The trend is currently upwards and is a good reflection of how things will shape up when normalcy resumes. We have also seen a clear pattern in the kidswear segment with the consumption moving up and is similar to what it is during school holidays. With immunity being really critical and people looking for ways to boost their health, there has been a big uptake in fitness products in the kids segment. In fact, kids who used to only buy motorsports are now buying fitness and performance apparel. Q) Right now, what kind of products are people buying? Is it purely essential, need-based items? With people still working from home and taking to fitness more seriously, we are seeing a lot of our customers buy athletic leisure wear and also home fitness gear. They are looking for workout gear like running t-shirts, training tracks, tank tops, etc. On puma.com, lot of the traffic is discovering products through searches much more than before. It shows consumers are very clear about what they want and there is an intent to buy. Purchase patterns are very similar to offline stores – with apparel and footwear growing significantly. We have seen our apparel share go up by 12 percentage points with people buying T-shirts, tracks and shorts that are suitable for home workouts as well as leisurewear. Q) Post-Covid, what do you think are a few things that will help brands survive and bounce back? The revival of the economy will take time and it has to be a staged process. As compared to other nations, India can transform the crisis into an opportunity and is in a much better position. Lot of companies and investors will look at India as a destination for future growth opportunities. As businesses return to normalcy, safety and hygiene will continue to be our biggest priority. Going forward, I do believe communication will continue to be key - brands will have to constantly be in touch with their consumers to ensure brand connect and higher recall. Q) Did you have to tweak your media mix during the lockdown? Post relaxation, how are you planning to market yourself? What will your broad marketing strategy be? There hasn’t been a major change in our media mix since digital has always been our primary channel of communication. We have always prioritized digital marketing and have had a digital-first approach in our content and campaign planning. In fact, our partnerships with our brand personalities, be it <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword>, <keyword id="1377418" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor-Khan">Kareena Kapoor Khan</keyword>, Mary Kom, KL Rahul, have all been activated through our social and digital media platforms. In times like these, it is very important to engage with customers in order to increase brand relevance in their minds. As a brand, we feel we are content creators and in order to reach the right audience, one needs to marry the art of content creation with the science of media selection. Q) As a leader, what have some of your key learnings from this experience been? One key takeaway from the whole experience is that you have to take each day as it comes. We need to keep evolving and adapting to changes and as a brand we need to ensure business agility. These are challenging times for all of us and when we come out of it, we will be stronger than ever. Communication is key during this time. My main focus has been to keep my team motivated by constantly communicating with them. Compassion for people is extremely essential and it is one kind of leadership currency that will be important for future. As a business leader, I am responsible for my employees and their families and my utmost priority is to keep them going. As leaders, we need to look for purpose beyond commerciality in Business. Q) How are you future-proofing your business? What steps did you take to minimize the business impact? The retail landscape has undergone a radical transformation. No one could have possibly been prepared for the disruption caused over the last few months. Right now, more than ever, it’s crucial to have a short- term goal in order to stay afloat, survive as a business, conserve cash and ensure all our team members are safe. In times like these, focusing on survival and coming out of the crisis with minimal business impact is the most important thing. In our category, typically, one plans a fashion range 9-10 months in advance, however, given the current situation, demand-planning in advance is going to be really difficult and will need a complete rehaul. Supply-chain will be very strategic going ahead, especially in the fashion and lifestyle industry. We need to create a flexible and nimble structure. Going forward, rolling forecast on a weekly and monthly basis is going to be necessary to maintain health of the business. Q) What is your vision for the Puma of the future? What do you want the brand to stand for, a few years down the line? As we look forward to reset and accelerate our efforts in 2021, I really wish for things get back to normal. Next year is very important for us and as a company, I hope to achieve the same levels of momentum we had 6 months back. We need to stay strong and survive this with minimum impact. By next year we hope to bounce back and slowly start recouping. Till then it is all about sustenance, strength, togetherness and hope. There will be no dearth of ambition for PUMA.
