KNR Constructions Ltd., a highway developer, slipped from record highs in trade after quarterly earnings disappointed investors. 
 
KNR said its first quarter net profit fell 38 percent to 15.01 crore rupees compared with 24.4 crore rupees in the year ago period. Sales during April-June slipped 33 percent to 171.2 crore rupees versus 255.6 crore rupees. The company's operating margin rose to 14.3 percent versus 13.6 percent in the comparative periods. 
 
KNR fell 2 rupees, or 0.9 percent, to 520 rupees on the National Stock Exchange, after hitting a high of 626 rupees on the National Stock Exchange. 
 
KNR's market capitalisation has surged 148 percent to 1,577 crore rupees in the past one year as investors hoped the new government would inject fresh road laying orders into the economy. The stock trades at 2 times its book value of 280 rupees.

As a report from HDFC Securities pointed out, the difference between the budgeted amount and the actual spending this year has been the highest in the last 4 years. That could explain the recent rally in capital goods stocks. “The lag in the spending for capital goods and infrastructure in FY22 was because of COVID-19 and related spending. This time the spending for these sectors started in October 2021. Even historically, the spending is high in the third and fourth quarter only as giving out tenders and finally giving the order to specific companies takes a lot of time,” said Kranthi Bathini, In terms of sectors, the highest allocation is to companies focussed on infrastructure construction. This may be a bet on government's willingness to spend more of taxpayers' money to boost economic growth. The zero weightage given to telecom may reflect the battered prospects of the sector amidst intense competition, piled up debt, and the imminent pressure of having to bid for 5G spectrum when the auction opens up in the coming weeks. Some stocks like ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are expected to more than double their profits in the next couple but that is largely due to the low-base effect in the last financial, which was marred by rising bad loans and provisions. The return to normalcy may look better when compared to the performance last year. The three IT stocks -- HCL Tech, Mphasis, and Tech Mahindra-- are expected to give the highest return on equity, above 20% each, according to the estimates in the model portfolio of stocks. This model portfolio may give one a perspective on how to invest their surplus profitably. These five stocks make up for half of Nomura's model portfolio

It was a bit of a nothing day for local <keyword id="6354298" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="stocks">stocks</keyword> as the <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> fluctuated between gains and losses and traders remained fence sitters in the broader markets as well. Software stocks were in heavy demand as the Rupee fell further versus the Dollar. 

	The Nifty slipped 11 points, or 0.1 percent, close at 8,467. The Advance-Decline ratio was a weak 19/31. GAIL, Coal India, NMDC, Cairn and Cipla were the top losers on the Index while BPCL, TCS, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra and Maruti posted modest gains on the Nifty where Tata Elxsi was the top traded counter with 805 crore rupees worth of shares changing hands.
 

	State Bank of India and Ashok Leyland were in heavy demand on the exchange as well. 
 

	The trend was mixed in the broader markets. Major indices such as CNX 100, CNX 200 and CNX 500 posted bit gains or losses. The CNX Small Cap Index surged 1.1 percent and was the top gainer in this space. Sectorial indices mostly posted losses. CNX Energy, CNX Finance and CNX FMCG Indexes lost between 0.2-0.6 percent.
 

	The CNX Metal and CNX Pharma Indices, too, lost ground in Tuesday's trade.
 On the <keyword id="43628" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-stock-exchange">Bombay Stock Exchange</keyword>, the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> dropped 47 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 27,831 points. GAIL, Coal India, Lupin, Sun Pharma and ONGC slipped in trade while Tata Steel, Maruti, Infosys, TCS and SBI gained ground on the Index where the Advance-Decline Ratio stood at 8/22 and SBI remained the top traded counter with 68 crore rupees worth of shares changing hands. 

	Bulls were marginally in control of the wider market. Today 1,565 stocks gained ground versus 1,219 that fell below Monday's closing prices.
 

	But the Bears took charge of the futures and options space with Nifty Futures slipping 8 points at 8,480. Ashok Leyland, SRF and Kaveri Seed were the top three gainers while Sun TV, GAIL and Coal India lost their footing. Banking, Media and Telecom sectors fell in trade while Auto, Fertilisers and Cement futures edged higher coupled with rising open interest. The Advance-Decline Ratio was at 77/83 in the futures and Options market. 
 

	3M, Aurobindo Pharma, CCL Products and Bajaj Corp hit fresh highs on the NSE. TRF, Mastek, Tata Elxsi, Transport Corp and KNR Constructions made it to the top volume buzzers list on the exchange.

Nifty fluctuated between gains and losses as Rupee fell further versus the Dollar

The <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> ended the week with a bang as traders bought into beaten down valuations and bottom fished for gains on Friday after global markets stabilised.
 

	The Nifty surged 163 points, or 2 percent, close at 8,519, its day's high, as the bulls snatched momentum back from the bears. The Nifty's Advance-Decline ratio was a strong 47/3. Punjab National Bank, Zee Entertainment, Yes Bank, Bank of Baroda and Kotak Bank were the five top gainers on the Index. The 3 stocks to cede ground were Dr. Reddy's, BPCL and Infosys on the Nifty where Axis Bank was the most traded index stock worth 424 crore rupees.
 

	Adani Ports and Glenmark were in very heavy demand on the NSE thanks to their pending inclusion in the MSCI India Index.
 

	Bulls took complete charge of the wider market as well. Major indices such as CNX 100, CNX 200, CNX Midcap, CNX Small Cap and CNX 500 closed with gains amounting to 1.9-2.1 percent.
 

	
		
			The Bank Nifty managed to end at the high point of the day, up 552 points at 18,728 on murmurs that the government will recapitalise some PSU lenders today evening. The CNX PSU Bank Index surged 4.6 percent as well. The trend in other sectoral indices was strong. The CNX Pharma, CNX PSU Bank and CNX Auto Indexes posted gains of between 0.6-8.5 percent. The CNX Realty Index was the star of the tradeon Friday.
		 
		
			On the Bombay Stock Exchange, the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> jumped 518 points, or 1.9 percent, to end the week at 28,067 points. Vedanta, ICICI Bank, SBI, RIL and HDFC posted smart gains on the Index while Infosys and Dr. Reddy fell in trade. Consequently, the Advance-Decline Ratio was a strong 28/2 on the Sensex on which State Bank of India was the top traded counter worth 54 crore rupees.
		 
		
			
				
					Bulls resumed charge in the wider market after six days of negative advance-decline ratios. Today, 1,789 stocks gained ground versus 1,058 that fell below Thursday's closing prices.
				 
				
					The trend was bullish as well in the derivatives space with Nifty Futures closing at 8,545, up 164 points. DLF, HDIL and PNB were the top gainers in the futures space and all 18 sectors reported a rise in prices coupled with a gain in Open Interest. The Realty, Banking and Media sectors were the top gainers. The Advance-Decline Ratio was at 149/13 in the futures and Options market. 
				 
				
					
						Strong earnings were reported by Power Finance Corporation, Amara Raja Batteries, Hindalco and BPCL. Adani Ports, Alicon Castalloys, Jindal Poly Films and Maruti hit fresh highs on the NSE and SKF India, ICRA and KNR Constructions made it to the top volume buzzers list on the exchange.

Here's how the day was at the Markets

1. Domestic shares are likely to trade with an upward bias on Wednesday as a strong close during late trade the previous day may continue its momentum in early deals. Traders expect the <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> to face a resistance in the 8,430-8,450 zone and turn weak if it slips below 8,320 levels on an intra-day basis. 
 
2. The overhang from the EU-Greece debt payment crisis will prevent leading indices from showing major gains but the impact on India is likely to be muted as just 0.1% of Indian exports go to Greece. However, fears of a major contagian remain if a global investment bank falls to its knees due to the expanding crisis. 
 
3. Market action is likely to refocus on earnings as July will see listed companies report their first quarter performance. Sectors such as Software, Pharma and Banking will hog the limelight. The report on government's spending in May shows that expenditure on roads has surged 7.4 times year-on-year to `10,000 crore. This augurs well for road construction companies such as KNR Constructions. 
 
 
STOCK ACTION: 
 
4. Auto stocks such as Maruti, Tata Motors and Hero Motors will report their monthly sales numbers for June today 
 
5. RELIANCE INDUSTRIES: Global brokerage CLSA has raised its price target on the diversified petrochemical giant to `1,300 from `1,150 while maintaining its BUY stance on the stock. CLSA states that new projects worth $25 billion are coming onstream in the next 18 months which may help the stock price double over the next three years. 
 
6. BPCL: Brokerage Credit Suisse has raised its price target on the PSU oil refining-marketing giant to `1,000 rupees from `870 and maintained its ``OUTPERFORM'' stance on the stock. A divestment by the government to bridge its fiscal deficit can help the medium-term outlook on the company, says the report. 
 
7. EICHER: CLSA has maintained its BUY recommendation on Eicher Motors with a price target of `21,800. The brokerage says Eicher, which makes the iconic Royal Enfield bike, has been able to cut down on the waiting period of its motorcycle thanks to higher supplies and expansion in the network. The demand for its heavy duty two-wheeler continues to remain very strong, the report adds. Royal Enfield remains a long-term structural story, it says. 
 
8. GLENMARK: Brokerage BoFA ML has raised its price target on mid-sized Glenmark Pharma to `1,100 from `1,075 per share and maintained its `BUY' stance on the Mumbai-based company. BoFA ML expects Glenmark's margins to grow and cash flows in improve over the next three years on the back of its drugs pipeline aimed at the US markets. The approval for `Zetia' is positive for Glenmark and it will contribute $200 million in profit for Glenmark and Par Pharma. 
 
 
SECTORAL ACTION: 
 
9. Software and Pharma shares will see the lion's share of action this quarter as earnings at top five IT companies may show a -1.3%-4.2% growth. April-June is a seasonally strong quarter for companies such as Infosys, TCS and HCL Tech but wage hikes and rising visa costs may mute earnings at these IT majors. 
 
10. Cipla, Cadila and Torrent Pharma are likely to report their highest ever pre-tax earnings this quarter.
