<ul><li>IMD forecasts a searing summer with “above normal” temperatures in most of northeast, eastern, central India and parts of northwest India.</li><li>Japanese electronics brand Panasonic expects a good summer with double digit growth.</li><li> JM Financial is of the view that demand for ACs will pick up this March and dealers are stocking up inventory.</li></ul>The summer of 2023 got off to an early start, and even with gusts of hail and wind, unpredictable and unseasonal weather is bringing cheer to makers of air conditioners. “We believe summer-23 is likely to be a healthy season for <keyword id="7743494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ac-manufacturers" source="Orion">AC manufacturers</keyword>, given soaring temperature and higher probability of occurrence of heat waves across cities and normalisation of commercial activities,” said a report by JM Financial. The report suggests that AC demand will pick up this March, and dealers have already started stocking up inventory in anticipation of good sales. Analysts at JM Financial believe that this year is widely expected to be a little hotter than the previous two years globally “mainly because of the expected end of the strongest ever La Niña event”. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) too forecasts a searing summer with “above normal” temperatures in most of northeast, eastern, central India and parts of northwest India. Hot summer to bring hot sales for AC manufacturers Japanese electronics brand Panasonic also expects a good summer with double digit growth. “At Panasonic, we are expecting healthy growth for our summer products such as ACs, refrigerators, etc., to name a few. Last year for our cooling products like ACs and refrigerators, we registered around 35% (for April 2022 till February 2023 as compared to the same period in 2021). this year we are hoping for continued growth momentum registering double-digit growth,” said Fumiyasu Fujimori, MD, Panasonic Marketing India, Panasonic Life Solutions India. High demand from Mumbai &amp; Bengaluru Analysts say that demand has already picked up in anticipation of a hot summer. The report stated that demand in all major cities like Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata witnessed moderation currently, whereas Mumbai, Bengaluru and certain pockets in Ahmedabad are witnessing pickup in demand given the early onset of summer. The brokerage firm has stated that Voltas remains their top pick, followed by <keyword id="152126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blue-star" source="Orion">Blue Star</keyword> and Amber Enterprises. They say that currently, demand for products of Voltas remains high, especially in lower tier cities because of higher brand awareness. However, with increased product offering by other brands, dealers anticipate pickup in demand from other brands as well. Analysts say Blue Star continues to be a preferred brand in Southern markets, while their presence in the North is also increasing. Other players such as Lloyd and LG continue to be preferred brands of choice for customers in South India whereas Daikin, Hitachi, LG and Panasonic are prominent in West India, says the report. AC manufacturers expect strong growth this summer led by unseasonal weather

In October, the government accepted the highest bid made by a Tata Sons company for 100 per cent equity shares of Air India and Air India Express along with its 50 per cent stake in ground-handling company AISATS — the first privatisation in 20 years. At that time, the government had stated that it wanted to complete the transactions, which included Tatas paying Rs 2,700 crore in cash, by December end. As per the conditions in SPA, all formalities of handover would have to be completed within 8 weeks, but this date can be mutually extended by the buyer and seller and is being done in this case. However, some regulatory approvals are yet to come in for the handover, and certain formalities are yet to be completed, the official, who wished not to be named, told PTI. “The process would be completed by January,” he said without giving a specific date. On October 25, the government had signed the share purchase agreement with Tata Sons for the sale of national carrier Air India for Rs 18,000 crore. Tata’s would pay Rs 2,700 crore cash and takeover Rs 15,300 crore of the airline’s debt. The cash component would come once the handover process is completed, another official explained. Tatas beat the Rs 15,100-crore offer by a consortium led by SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh and the reserve price of Rs 12,906 crore set by the government for the sale of its 100 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier. As of August 31, Air India had a total debt of Rs 61,562 crore. 75 per cent of this debt or Rs 46,262 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle AIAHL before handing over the loss-making airline to Tata Group. Tatas will not get to retain non-core assets, such as the Vasant Vihar Housing colony of Air India, Air India Building at Nariman Point, Mumbai, and Air India Building in New Delhi. Of the 141 Air India aircraft that Tatas will get, 42 are leased planes, while the remaining 99 are owned. While this will be the first privatisation since 2003-04, Air India will be the third airline brand in the Tatas’ stable – it holds a majority interest in AirAsia India and Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd. Tata’s acquisition of Air India will give it access to a fleet of 117 wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, and Air India Express Ltd another 24 narrow-body aircraft besides control of 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing, and parking slots at domestic airports. Air India started suffering losses every year since its merger with Indian Airlines in 2007-08. A Turnaround Plan (TAP) and a Financial Restructuring Plan (FRP) were approved for Air India by the previous UPA regime in 2012. However, the TAP did not work out, and Air India continued to reel under losses, with the government giving Rs 20 crore per day to keep the airline afloat. Over the last decade, more than Rs 1.10 lakh crore was infused by way of cash support and loan guarantees in the loss-making airline to keep it afloat. Two aborted missions, three different ministers, multiple rule changes and two decades later, Indian taxpayers will no longer have to pay ₹20 crore per day to keep the loss-making <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> flying. While opposition Congress expectedly attacked the decision as selling the family silver, DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said what Tata is getting is not a cash cow but an airline which is bleeding where money needs to be pumped in to refurbish obsolete aircraft and dust up strangled ones while being unable to touch any employee for one year and only be able to resize staff after paying a VRS. "It won't be a very easy task there. Only advantage is they (new Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> owner) are paying the price which they think they can manage. They are not taking the excessive debt accumulated to fund years of losses. We are continuing it as an ongoing concern.... This process has also saved huge amount of taxpayers money going forward," Pandey told PTI. Earlier this month, the government had accepted an offer by Talace Pvt Ltd, a unit of the holding company of salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group, to pay ₹2,700 crore cash and takeover ₹15,300 crore of the airline's debt. As on August 31, Air India had a total debt of ₹61,562 crore. About 75 per cent of this debt or ₹46,262 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle AIAHL before handing over the loss-making airline to the Tata Group. <keyword id="6360721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tatas" source="Orion">Tatas</keyword> would not get to retain non-core assets such as the Vasant Vihar Housing colony of Air India, Air India Building at Nariman Point in Mumbai, and Air India Building in New Delhi. "We have only allowed (Tata group) for use for two years, but within two years we have to work out a monetisation plan for it to be sold so that the money can be used to set off AIAHL liabilities," Pandey said. Of the 141 Air India aircraft that Tatas would get, 42 are leased planes while the remaining 99 are owned. Tata will also take over the capitalised lease liability on account of operating leases of Rs 9,185 crore. Besides, some of these 141 planes are grounded due to lack of engine and other maintenance. Also the obsolescence factor is there are many as not fuel efficient. "We want to finish the handover quickly, because we are paying Rs 20 cr /day to run the airline. The new owner will need to put in a lot of capital because they have to do capital expenditure to improve aircraft, refurbish and give new orders for obsolete aircraft. Only then they may be able to turnaround. Also conditions have been put that you cannot resize employees for 1 year, and thereafter in the second year, you have to give VRS," Pandey said. The government is divesting its 100 per cent ownership of Air India and Air India Express along with its 50 per cent stake in ground-handling company AISATS. The government will, however, transfer about Rs 16,000 crore of unpaid current liabilities, in excess of current and non current assets, such as fuel bills and other pending dues that Air India owes to suppliers, to Air India Assets Holding Ltd (AIAHL). A Letter of Intent (LoI) has been issued to Tatas on October 11 confirming the government's willingness to sell its 100 per cent stake in the airline. Tatas have now to accept the LoI, post which the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) will be signed. Conditions precedent to the transactions would need to be satisfied by Tatas before they actually can take over the operations. Normally within 14 days of acceptance of LOI, the SPA is signed. While this will be the first privatisation since 2003-04, Air India will be the third airline brand in the Tatas' stable - it holds a majority interest in AirAsia India and Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines Ltd. Air India will give it access to a fleet of 117 wide-body and narrow-body aircraft and Air India Express Ltd another 24 narrow-body aircraft besides control of 4,400 domestic and 1,800 international landing and parking slots at domestic airports, as well as 900 slots at airports overseas such as London's Heathrow. Tatas beat the ₹15,100-crore offer by a consortium led by SpiceJet promoter Ajay Singh and the reserve price of ₹12,906 crore set by the government for the sale of its 100 per cent stake in the loss-making carrier. Air India was first put on the block under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government when the newly created disinvestment ministry led by <keyword id="47167" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arun-shourie" source="Orion">Arun Shourie</keyword> offered 40 per cent of the government stake in the airline for sale. Foreign airlines, including Lufthansa, Swissair, Air France-Delta, British Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines (SIA) expressed interest in buying the airline but they pulled out after the government-mandated taking a local partner. Among the two domestic majors in fray, Hindujas, who were embroiled in the Bofors scam, was disqualified while Tata's partner, SIA, pulled out citing 'adverse climate and opposition to privatisation'. The privatisation plan was revived under Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arun-jaitley" source="Orion">Arun Jaitley</keyword> in 2017 when the government offered for sale 74 per cent in the airline. But the decision of the government to hold 26 per cent in the airline and auction rules saw no bidder turning up. With 4 years of uncertainty over privatisation, Air India struggled with dipping employee morale and rising inefficiencies within the organisation. When <keyword id="6354642" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="modi" source="Orion">Modi</keyword> took over with a decisive mandate for the second time, Air India privatisation was revived in 2020, under current Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, with an offer to completely sell a 100 per cent stake. A new decision-making mechanism was worked out. The government sweetened the deal for Air India buyers, giving them flexibility to decide on the amount of Air India debt they want to absorb. The bids were invited on the enterprise value of the company, which includes debt as well as cash on the company's balance sheet. Air India started suffering losses every year since its merger with Indian Airlines in 2007-08. A Turnaround Plan (TAP) as well as a Financial Restructuring Plan (FRP) were approved for Air India by the previous UPA regime in 2012. However, the TAP did not work out and Air India continued to reel under losses with the government giving Rs 20 crore/day to keep the airline afloat. <ul><li>Supreme Court has decided to ban decade-old <keyword id="6451503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diesel-vehicles">diesel vehicles</keyword> and 15-year-old <keyword id="1433855" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol-vehicles">petrol vehicles</keyword> as air quality plummets in the National Capital Region (NCR). </li></ul><ul><li>The Central Pollution Control Board has been asked to create a social media account immediately for the citizens to raise complaints regarding Delhi’s <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> so that corrective plans can be initiated by the concerned authorities. </li></ul><ul><li>The apex court stated that a list of all such vehicles should be published on the CPCB’s website. </li></ul>As Delhi’s air quality plummets, the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday decided to ban the operation of 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR). The air quality in the NCR has been degrading tremendously and matters are only going to get worse as winter settles in. The Supreme Court has asked the transport department to confiscate all those vehicles on the banned list if found on roads. Considering the current condition of pollution in the <keyword id="157098" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-NCR">Delhi-NCR</keyword> region, the court also said that the matter should be advertised well in the newspaper and a list of such vehicles should be published on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) website. Also, the CPCB has been asked to create a social media account on an immediate basis for the citizens to raise complaints related to pollution issues so as the concerned authorities can take remedial actions at the earliest. The SC accorded the Environment Prevention &amp; Control Authority (EPCA) to take preventive steps under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which was proposed to tackle air-pollution in Delhi-NCR region when air quality deteriorates. The amicus, referring to the note prepared by the EPCA Chairman, contained the details and photographs of garbage burning in several regions across the region including parts of Dwarka, Mundka and Bawana. The bench also referred to the media reports that stated that people should not go on morning walks due to high levels of pollution in the region. In response to the photographs, the bench asked the Delhi Government and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd to file their affidavits within the next two days. The Court passed its directives after a note was placed before it by advocate Aparajita Singh, who has been assisting the Court in the air-pollution matters, seeking an urgent corrective plan for the current situation. In a conversation with <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/sc-bans-15-yr-old-petrol-10-yr-old-diesel-vehicles-in-ncr-due-to-pollution-118102900615_1.html">Business Standard</a>, Singh stated that the farmers alone shouldn’t be blamed for pollution due to crop burning since the pollution from transport vehicles was recorded to be 41%, as reported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The matter has been posted for a hearing on 1 November. Earlier in 2015, National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also banned the plying of such vehicles on Delhi roads but the court had rejected the plea against the NGT.

Damage control: India’s top court bans 10-year old diesel vehicles, 15-year old petrol vehicles in NCR

Buyers of loss-making airline Air India and oil firm Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) will not get a free hand to shed excess workforce as the government will build in certain protection to employees in the share sale agreement, DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said.
 Public sector companies often have more people on rolls than their private sector counterparts and companies wanting to take them over would likely to right-size them to remove inefficiencies.
 In an interview with , the secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) said the government will follow a two-stage bidding process for selling its entire holding in Air India and BPCL.
 First preliminary interest from potential bidders is invited, followed by they being given access of data room on the companies for due diligence. In the second stage, price bids are invited.
 While in the case of Air India, the expression of interest (EoI) has been invited by March 17, an offer seeking the same for BPCL is likely to be floated in the next few days.
 Asked if the bidders will get a free hand to right-size the companies after the acquisition, Pandey said, "There will be certain protection to employees and there will be other conditionalities and this will be listed out in the share purchase agreement (SPA)."
 He did not give details of the conditionalities. An SPA will signed with the acquirer who offers the highest bid for buying out government stake.
 The government is selling its entire 100 per cent stake in Air India but wants effective control to stay with Indian nationals. The airline, which started as a Tata Airlines in 1932 and was later acquired by the government, has not made profits since 2007. It has a total debt of Rs 60,074 crore, of which bidder has to takeover Rs 23,286.5 crore.
 In the case of BPCL, the government is selling its entire 53.29 per cent stake in the company that will give buyers ready access to 14 per cent of India's oil refining capacity and about one-fifth of the fuel market share in the world's fastest-growing energy market.
 "There is a two-stage process. There will be EoI and request for proposal or RFP (in the first stage) and due diligence-cum-bidding stage (in the second)," Pandey said. "After the bidding stage, the highest bidder (will be identified). The highest bidder meeting the reserve price will sign the SPA."
 Asked about concerns over valuation of BPCL, he said DIPAM has valuation methodologies. "There is an independent asset valuer and then there is a transaction advisor who will do the business valuation. Then, the value will be arrived at. But, this valuation or the reserve price will not be revealed unless the financial bids are received."
 Officers' unions of blue-chip public sector undertakings (PSUs) have opposed the government's decision to privatise India's second-biggest oil firm BPCL, saying family silver worth Rs 9 lakh crore is being sold for a fraction of the amount.
 BPCL has a market capitalisation of about Rs 1 lakh crore and the government stake at current prices is worth about Rs 54,000 crore. The successful bidder will also have to make an open offer to other shareholders for acquiring another 26 per cent at the same price.

 This is the second attempt for sale of Air India after the failed attempt in 2018. Losses notwithstanding, it has some lucrative assets that include prized slots at London's choked Heathrow airport, a fleet of more than 100 planes and thousands of trained pilots and crew.
 BPCL operates four refineries in Mumbai, Kochi (Kerala), Bina (Madhya Pradesh) and Numaligarh (Assam) with a combined capacity of 38.3 million tonnes per annum, which is 15 per cent of India's total refining capacity of 249.4 million tonnes. While the Numaligarh refinery will be carved out of BPCL and sold to a PSU, the new buyer of the company will get 35.3 million tonnes of refining capacity.
 It also owns 15,177 petrol pumps and 6,011 LPG distributor agencies in the country. Besides, it has 51 LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) bottling plants. The company distributes 21 per cent of petroleum products consumed in the country by volume as of March this year and has more than a fifth of the 250 aviation fuel stations in the country. Secondly, while the economy has been witnessing a slowdown, there is still a room for a lot of premiumization. And there's a big trend in sustainability that is slowly but surely picking up momentum and is something we will see more of in 2020. Amer Jaleel, Group CCO &amp; Chairman, MullenLowe Lintas Group: I see content saturation coming. We have to start seeing consumers as audiences in the Media Age. Everybody is creating content with ease through apps. While this explosion leads to satisfying the creative urge among people and that surely is a good thing, but coupled with the march of platforms and production, this is leading very rapidly to content fatigue. Once we see our consumers as an audience, we have to account for the fatigue they have to overcome to see the frankly poor quality of brand content that most of us are putting out. The only way marketeers and their brand partners have is to be ahead of and fresher than the content that's being dished out. I can clearly see that the phrase 'break the clutter' is outdated. We will have to preempt all the evolution of what we call clutter and be ahead of the thinking of the clutter makers. The top trends that will dominate the advertising, marketing and media industry in 2020

KOLKATA: Voltas established a clear lead in air-conditioners sold through multi-brand outlets in the past fiscal year, dethroning <keyword id="6356116" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="LG">LG</keyword>, the first time in almost 14 years that a local manufacturer was able to topple South Korean companies in any major segment in the fiercely competitive Rs 50,000-crore consumer electronics market. 
 
This follows a year in which Voltas emerged as a front-runner in the category, fighting LG for ascendancy. The performance by Voltas came in the face of scepticism that success in FY13 had been a flash in the pan and that no domestic brand could make a dent in the dominance of the multinationals in multi-brand outlets, where 90% of total industry sales take place. 
 The <keyword id="6383291" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="ACS">ACs</keyword> made by the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword> unit had a 20% share in multi-brand outlets followed by LG at 18% and Samsung at 10.8% in the April 2013-February 2014 period, according to the latest data from market researcher GfKNielsen that tracks sales in the durables industry. Voltas is ahead by value as well at 18.9%, followed by LG at 17.9% and Samsung at 10.6%. 
 
This was the first full year in which Voltas sustained its leadership throughout, with LG having fought back to the top in some months in FY13. 
 
However, LG is still the market leader when counting sales in multi-brand outlets and its own exclusive stores. 
 
As per GfK-Nielsen, LG India has a 22% share by this measure, with Voltas at 18%, followed by Samsung at 14%. Since multi-brand outlets account for the dominant share of AC sales, it's a fair measure of competition, said Pradeep Bakshi, president and COO, unitary cooling products business group. 
 
“We are targeting more than 25% share this year. For this, we have launched more than 90 models,” he said. LG India seemed to reject the reasoning offered by Voltas.

	“We would like to mention that LG is market leader in AC segment and figures mentioned in the mail are representing manipulative and incorrect form of market share,” it said in an email without responding on other queries sent as part of a detailed questionnaire.
To be sure, as a delayed summer gets under way, LG will be more than ready to unleash the might of its vast marketing machine. Voltas will have a tough task as LG has been pushing back hard with higher margins this season, said a senior executive of a leading electronic retail chain. 
 
“Another area where Voltas has not worked hard is to increase the appeal of the brand among younger consumers, for whom Hitachi and Daikin are the preferred brands and may settle for a LG or Samsung if budget does not permit,” he said. 
 
Still, the turnaround at Voltas is big news at Bombay House, the Tata group headquarters, considering the many Indian brands that lost out after LG and Samsung entered the Indian market in the late 90s. 
 Homegrown brands such as BPL, Videocon, Onida, <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> and Voltas lost lustre starting 2000-01, with the South Koreans kicking off their marketing thrust. IFB was one of the few Indian brands to maintain its grip on the market in the niche front-loading washing segment until about four years ago, when LG took over as leader. 
 LG India has built the country's largest network of company-branded exclusive stores in the durables industry, with more than 1,800 such franchisees. As per estimates, such stores account for around 20% of LG India's sales, the highest contribution from this category in the industry. However, AC makers including Hitachi, Daikin, Voltas and <keyword id="345443" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Carrier">Carrier</keyword> have not focused on setting up exclusive stores since most AC sales take place in multi-brand stores such as local outlets, regional chains and modern retail. 
 
The executives most credited with the Voltas turnaround are Bakshi and managing director Sanjay Johri. The process started eight years ago when Bakshi was given the task of turning around the air-conditioner business by the board, with the condition that if he failed, the business may be sold. At the time Voltas was at a negligible 6-7th position in the market, with accumulated losses of Rs 140 crore. 
 
“Regaining market leadership has indeed been a Herculean task, considering LG was a tough market leader and the AC category has been one of the most penetrated with more than 25 international and domestic brands jostling for their share of the wallet,” said Bakshi, who joined Voltas after stints at Electrolux and Godrej Appliances. Bakshi’s strategy involved launching India’s first energy efficient air-conditioner in 2007, three years before the government made energy ratings mandatory, pricing the models Rs 2,000-3,000 higher than LG and Samsung. Advertisements said energy efficiency would lower electricity bills. 
 
He also shut two factories that could not produce such models. In 2012, Voltas launched its biggest success to date -- the all-weather AC range. He also employed one of LG's strategies to great success. “The AC business was traditionally done by dealers who would specialise in this field. LG had changed the game by selling AC in the general trade and we too decided to follow suit. We currently have more than 9,400 such outlets where our products are sold. This changed the game for us too,” said Bakshi. 
 
The air-conditioner business is now the highest contributor toward profitability for Voltas, encouraging Bakshi to draft a blueprint to expand the brand into household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines with a target to expand revenue to Rs 5,000 crore in five years. The business is the second-largest revenue contributor for Voltas, after electro-mechanical projects and services, with sales of Rs 1,835 crore in 2012-13 with a profit of Rs 173 crore. Total net sales for Voltas in 2012-13 amounted to Rs 5,514 crore . 
 
The brand lends itself very strongly to the domain of air and water, said Deba Ghosal, head of marketing and key accounts. “If you add our pedigree of cooling expertise, leadership position, and the trust factor of a Tata brand, the possibilities to expand into other categories are immense,” he said. 
 
Bakshi acknowledges challenges ahead such as increasing appeal to younger consumers. “But we are on the way. For instance, this year we have launched a smartphone app to control the AC and are also targeting social media,” he said. 
 
Bakshi is also betting on his new team, which consists of seasoned talent from the industry. This includes Rahul Jain, who joined from LG to head service, Ghosal, another ex-LG India executive, and Manish Desai, who moved from Onida to head finance.
