Defending its 2019 law criminalising <keyword id="20415107" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="triple-talaq" source="keywords">triple talaq</keyword>, the Centre has told the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> that the practice is "fatal" for the social institution of <keyword id="19896575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marriage" source="keywords">marriage</keyword>. In an affidavit filed in response to petitions challenging the law, the Union of India said despite the top court setting aside the practice in 2017, it has "not worked as a sufficient deterrent in bringing down the number of divorces by this practice" among the members of the community. "It is submitted that Parliament in its wisdom has enacted the impugned Act to protect the rights of married <keyword id="19943278" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muslim-women" source="keywords">Muslim women</keyword> who are being divorced by triple talaq. "The impugned Act helps in ensuring the larger constitutional goals of <keyword id="20809677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-justice" source="keywords">gender justice</keyword> and <keyword id="20250318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gender-equality" source="keywords">gender equality</keyword> of married Muslim women and helps subserve their fundamental rights of non-discrimination and empowerment," the affidavit said. On 22 August 2017, the <keyword id="19936355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apex-court" source="keywords">apex court</keyword> had declared instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) unconstitutional. On August 23, 2019, the top court agreed to examine the validity of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Violation of the law entails imprisonment of up to three years. Two Muslim organisations -- <keyword id="22278513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind">Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind</keyword> and Samastha Kerala Jamiathul Ulema -- have urged the court to declare the law "unconstitutional". Jamiat claimed in its petition that "criminalising a mode of <keyword id="19911325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="divorce" source="keywords">divorce</keyword> in one particular religion while keeping the subject of marriage and divorce in other religions only within the purview of civil law, leads to discrimination, which is not in conformity with the mandate of Article 15".

Centre defends 2019 law on triple talaq in SC, says practice 'fatal' for marriage

A Michigan judge has issued an impossible order to a deployed sailor: Appear <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/sailor-serving-overseas-ordered-custody-fight/story?id=24208298">in court Monday or face</a> arrest and the possibility of losing custody of his six-year-old daughter, ABC News reports.
Matthew Hindes is currently serving on the USS Michigan under the Pacific Ocean, so there is no way he can appear in court. 
"He's protecting the rights of others, but who is protecting his rights?" Hindes' wife Benita-Lynn <a href="http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2014/06/20/judge-orders-deployed-us-sailor-to-attend-custody-hearing-or-lose-daughter-face-contempt/">told</a> CBS Local.
Hindes was awarded custody in 2010, after his daughter Kaylee was removed from the home of his ex-wife, Angela, by child protective services. While the sailor is deployed, Kaylee has been under the care of the daughter's step-mother Benita-Lynn, <a href="http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2014/06/20/judge-orders-deployed-us-sailor-to-attend-custody-hearing-or-lose-daughter-face-contempt/">according</a> to CBS.
Because Hindes left his daughter in the care of his wife instead of leaving her with the mother, the judge has refused to issue a stay under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which allows courts to "grant a stay of proceedings for a minimum period of 90 days to defendants serving their country."
Circuit Court Judge Margaret Noe disagreed with Hindes' lawyers request for relief, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/sailor-serving-overseas-ordered-custody-fight/story?id=24208298">saying</a>, "If the child is not in the care and custody of the father, the child should be in the care and custody of the mother."
Hindes is not even allowed attend by Skype or phone, only in person.
"At this point, I don't think I have any alternative but to enter a bench warrant for his arrest," <a href="http://www.lenconnect.com/article/20140617/NEWS/140619158/1996/NEWS">Noe said, according to the Daily Telegram.</a>

We asked an F-22 Raptor squadron commander if he's worried about Russia's Su-57 stealth fighter - and he laughed

Hinds Community College in Jackson, Mississippi originally received the grenade launcher in 1998 via the <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword> Department's 10-33 program. The grenade launcher was purchased by a former campus chief of police who retired in 2003.
The weapon has remained in the college's inventory, but has so far never been used. 
Hinds' Community College President Clyde Muse has <a href="http://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/local/2014/09/18/hinds-cc-grenade-launcher/15817517/">said</a> that, pending a decision by the college's Board of Trustees, the grenade launcher will be declared surplus and will be disposed of legally. 
Students at Hinds Community College have mixed feelings as to its disposal. 
Zimrie Magee, a student at Hinds, <a href="http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/26562285/hcc-gets-a-gernade-launcher-through-the-10-33-program"></a>thought having the weapon on campus wasn't such a terrible idea. "I feel more protected and I'm actually glad that we have that resource," she <a href="http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/26562285/hcc-gets-a-gernade-launcher-through-the-10-33-program">told</a> MS News Now.
Other students have expressed reservations towards having military-grade equipment stored on their college's campus. 
"I don't like it," Clifford Daniels, Jr., a Hinds student, told MS News Now. "Honestly, just because there are, you know, some crazy folks, students, you know, that look for something to get into." 
The militarization of police has become a hot button issue <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/swat-ferguson-protest-2014-8">following the response</a> of police in Ferguson, Missouri. Ferguson police allegedly shot and killed an unarmed teenager, and then responded to protests and riots in the community by deploying <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/military-gear-police-ferguson-2014-8">full military gear</a>, including military armored vehicles, tear gas, and night-vision goggles. 
According to a Washington Post report, at least <a href="http://theaviationist.com/2014/09/19/su-24-violated-swedish-airspace/">120 schools</a> and universities have received military surplus equipment across the country. This gear includes armored vehicles, grenade launchers, and military rifles. 
As of publication, Hinds Community College was unavailable for comment.
