New Delhi: Steel companies in the country are likely to face margin pressure in the third quarter of FY25 as muted steel prices compress spreads, according to a report by Axis Securities. The report stated that the weak demand in China and higher exports from the country have been identified as key factors behind the decline in steel prices. The report highlighted that <keyword id="24048830" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-steel-exports" source="keywords">Chinese steel exports</keyword> reached 92 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) between January and October 2024, marking a 22 per cent year-on-year increase. This has led to an oversupply in the global market, weighing down prices domestically. It said "Weak Chinese domestic demand along with higher Chinese exports has led to a decline in steel prices in India. Chinese steel exports from Jan'24 to Oct'24 stood at 92 MTPA, up 22 per cent YoY" In India, the average price of hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel in the trader's market in Mumbai fell by 8 per cent year-on-year and 6 per cent quarter-on-quarter to Rs 51,802 per tonne in the second quarter of FY25. Spot prices have further declined to Rs 49,000 per tonne, 5 per cent lower than the Q2FY25 average. The report also noted some signs of recovery in China's residential property sector, with increased transactions in major cities following policy measures aimed at boosting demand. However, challenges remain, as the three-month moving average of year-to-date floor space declined by 19 per cent year-on-year in September 2024, remaining in negative territory. It said "China's residential property sector is showing some signs of improvement with the transactions in major cities rising after recent policy measures introduced to boost demand". On the global front, the report noted that the probability of a 25-basis point rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in its December 2024 meeting has fallen to 58.9 per cent, down from 76.8 per cent in October 2024, owing to strong economic data from the US. Additionally, China has removed a 13 per cent export rebate on aluminum and copper, effective December 1, 2024, in response to anticipated tariff measures by the new US administration. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and potential shifts in the global and domestic steel and metals markets.

Falling steel prices amid Chinese export surge, to reduce profits of companies in Q3 FY25: Report

New Delhi, <keyword id="19971670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JSW-Steel" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="JSW Steel" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="JSW Steel">JSW Steel</keyword> has posted a 65 per cent fall in consolidated <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> at Rs 1,322 crore for the March 2024 quarter impacted by <keyword id="21700627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raw-materials-costs" source="keywords">raw materials costs</keyword> and some other expenses. It had clocked Rs 3,741 crore net profit during the fourth quarter of the last fiscal, the company said in an exchange filing on Friday. The company's total income also fell to Rs 46,511.28 crore from Rs 47,427 crore in January-March FY23. During the period under review, its expenses stood at Rs 44,401 crore, as against Rs 43,170 crore a year ago. Among the expenses, the cost of raw materials consumed by the company surged to Rs 24,541 crore from 23,905 crore in the January-March FY23. While "other expenses" increased to Rs 7,197 crore from Rs 6,653 crore in the year-ago period. In FY24, the net profit rose to Rs 8,973 crore from Rs 4139 crore in FY23. The income for the full year stood at Rs 1,76,010 crore, up from Rs 1,66,990 crore. The board of directors of the company announced a final dividend of Rs 7.30 for FY24. JSW Steel Q4 net profit falls 65% to ₹1,322 crore

New Delhi, <keyword id="45609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JSW-Steel" source="Orion">JSW Steel</keyword> on Friday posted about three-fold jump in net profit at Rs 2,428 crore for June quarter 2023-24 on account of higher income. It had posted Rs 839 crore net profit in the corresponding period of 2022-23, JSW Steel said in a regulatory filing. Total income also rose to Rs 42,544 crore from Rs 38,275 crore in the year-ago quarter, it said. Expenses were at Rs 39,030 crore as against Rs 36,977 crore earlier. JSW Steel is the flagship business of diversified JSW Group, which has presence in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, cement, paints, sports, and venture capital. The company's board at its meeting held on Friday appointed Swayam Saurabh as Chief Financial Officer designate, it said.

JSW Steel Q1 2023-24 profit nearly triples to Rs 2,428 cr

Mining conglomerate <keyword id="19919721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vedanta" source="keywords">Vedanta</keyword> Ltd on Tuesday reported 36.5 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 3,606 crore for June quarter FY25 due to improved margins and robust cost reduction across all operations. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 2,640 crore in the year-ago period. Income rose to Rs 36,698 crore over Rs 34,279 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Vedanta said in a statement that the proposed demerger of its businesses is on track and it has already filed the demerger scheme with NCLT after getting a nod from secured creditors. The company said that its board has approved a capex investment of USD 270 million for its oil and gas business. "The strategic priority for the Cairn Oil &amp; Gas business is to augment reserves and increase near term volume through infill wells and enhanced oil recovery. In order to deliver this, the Board has approved capex investment (net) of USD 270 million across fields in the Rajasthan block for drilling wells and construction of surface facility for ASP ( Alkaline Surfactant Polymer) injection," the company said in a separate filing. Vedanta Executive Director Arun Misra said that the company has delivered a strong start to the year, with exceptional EBITDA improvement of 47 per cent and PAT improvement by 54 per cent year-over-year on the back of improved margins, and robust cost reduction across all operations. "Our aluminium and zinc divisions continue to outperform industry benchmarks, consistently ranking in the top quartiles and deciles of the global cost curve. These achievements are a direct result of our strategic focus on cost, as reflected in a 20 per cent year-over-year reduction in overall cost," he said. The company's growth projects are well on track and it remains committed to commission the majority of these projects in FY25. "Moving ahead, our focus on operational efficiency, sustained expansion, and ESG excellence will guide our journey. With this dedication, we are confident in our ability to create substantial shareholder value in the year ahead," he added. Last month, the mining conglomerate raised Rs 8,500 crore (over USD 1 billion) through Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) of 19.31 crore equity shares at an issue price of Rs 440 per share. Company's CFO Ajay Goel said, "The overwhelming response to the Vedanta's... QIP...underscores investors' huge confidence. The proceeds from the QIP will be further instrumental in deleveraging the balance sheet and reduction of finance costs. We have received all the requisite approvals and have filed the demerger scheme with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) taking our demerger a step closer to reality." The company's gross debt stood at Rs 78,016 crore as on June 30, 2024. On the global front, a significant focus will be on China. The country is scheduled to announce its GDP and Industrial Production (IIP) numbers, Meena said. "Other global factors to watch include the speech by the US Federal Reserve Chairman, US retail sales figures, and macroeconomic data from Japan," he added. Meanwhile, IT services company HCL Tech on Friday posted a 20.4 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,257 crore for the June-ended quarter and gave a revenue growth guidance of 3-5 per cent for FY25 on GenAI diversification and strong operational execution. "On Monday, markets will react to India's inflation data. Key results this week include Jio Financial Services, HDFC Life, Asian Paints, LTIMindtree, Infosys, Wipro, JSW Steel, Paytm, etc. Also globally, investors will take cues from China's GDP numbers, US core retail sales data, and ECB (European Central Bank) interest rate decision," Siddhartha Khemka, Head, Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. Retail inflation increased to four-month high of 5.08 per cent in June as food items, including vegetables, became dearer, according to government data released on Friday. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said, "We expect stock-specific moves to gain traction due to the ongoing earnings season; indeed, IT will be in the limelight due to the good start to the earnings and outlook." In the week ahead, economic data like China GDP, EuroZone CPI inflation, ECB policy, and the US Fed chair speech will be watched by investors to get cues on market momentum, Nair added. On a weekly basis, the BSE benchmark jumped 522.74 points, or 0.65 per cent, while the Nifty climbed 178.3 points, or 0.73 per cent. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 622 points, or 0.78 per cent, to settle at a record closing level of 80,519.34 on Friday. During the day, it zoomed 996.17 points, or 1.24 per cent, to hit an all-time high of 80,893.51. The NSE Nifty surged 186.20 points, or 0.77 per cent, to settle at a record closing high of 24,502.15. Intra-day, it jumped 276.25 points, or 1.13 per cent, to hit a new lifetime peak of 24,592.20.

Trading activity to hinge on Q1 results, global trends in holiday-shortened week: analysts

<keyword id="64275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jindal-stainless" source="Orion">Jindal Stainless</keyword> Ltd (<keyword id="74606" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jsl" source="Orion">JSL</keyword>) on Thursday said its consolidated net profit has more than doubled to Rs 764.03 crore in the September quarter, on the back of higher income. It had clocked Rs 347.02 crore net profit in the year-ago period, JSL said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. The company's total income increased to Rs 9,828.97 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal as against Rs 8,776.61 crore a year ago. JSL's expenses were at Rs 8,944.04 crore, higher than the Rs 8,335.52 crore it reported a year ago. In a separate statement, JSL Managing Director Abhy per cuday Jindal, said, "Our domestic sales increased year-on-year (y-o-y), buoyed by the government's push for stainless steel in strategic sectors." "As we wait for the <keyword id="19198542" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-stainless-steel-policy" source="Orion">National Stainless Steel Policy</keyword>, we are confident that the per capita consumption of stainless steel in India will increase from the current 2.8 kg in the coming years," he said. Chinese imports have increased by nearly 55% year-on-year, which highlights the unchecked dumping of subsidised and substandard Chinese products in the Indian market, the MD said. The industry expects the government to take notice of the continuously increasing imports from China, which is hurting the sector, especially the MSMEs and as well the government's vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, he added. During the September quarter, the company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation was at Rs 1,231 crore, up by 80% y-o-y. "The board also approved the proposal to explore the option for selling/liquidating/divesting equity stake in its subsidiary, PT Jindal Stainless, Indonesia (PTJSI), at Gresik, Indonesia," the statement said. "The decision was taken in the wake of unfavourable market conditions in Indonesia due to the lack of a level-playing field and competition with Chinese products," it said. Most of the Indonesian market is dominated by Chinese players, and therefore, major markets such as the US and the EU have levied severe trade protection measures on exports of stainless steel products from Indonesia. The Board of Directors also approved an interim dividend Re 1 per equity share (face value of Rs 2 each) for FY24. The record date for determining the entitlement of shareholders has been set as October 28. The dividend shall be paid on or before November 17, the company said, adding that the aggregate payout will be nearly Rs 82.34 crore. The sales volume for the second quarter stood at 543,619 metric tonnes, up by nearly 26% y-o-y, owing to robust domestic demand. Ahead of the upcoming festive season, the company's sales in the auto segment -- besides other consumer-facing segments -- witnessed an uptick, the statement said.

The demand for office spaces during the first quarter of 2024 has been strong, registering total leasing of 13.6 million square feet across the top six cities. Although this is a significant drop from the record office space take-up in the last quarter of 2023, the remarkable annual increase is indicative of upbeat occupier sentiment, given the fact that the first quarter is typically slower, Colliers said in a report. Bengaluru and <keyword id="19900176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="keywords">Hyderabad</keyword> emerged as frontrunners for demand of Grade A office space in the first quarter of 2024, cumulatively accounting for more than half of the <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> leasing activity. The office market of Hyderabad saw 2.2x space uptake in Q1 2024 as compared to the corresponding quarter last year. This demand was driven by healthcare and pharma and technology sectors. Amongst other major office markets, Mumbai too experienced a notable surge in leasing activity, an impressive 90 per cent yearly rise in Q1 2024. "Hyderabad continues to strengthen its role as a prominent commercial office market in the country. The city offers occupiers including <keyword id="20942407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-capability-centers" source="keywords">Global Capability Centers</keyword> considerable price arbitrage compared to other markets. Of the 2.9 million square feet of Grade A space uptake in the first quarter, over 80 per cent of the demand was concentrated in these three localities," said Mehrotra. During Q1 2024, new supply across top six cities remained steady, at 9.8 million square feet, almost at par with the level seen in Q1 2023. According to Colliers, Bengaluru witnessed significant new project completions, contributing to 45 per cent of the total new supply, followed by Hyderabad at 27 per cent share. With demand outpacing supply, average rentals saw up to 8 per cent uptick on a yearly basis across most of the major markets. "As business sentiments and economic outlook remains positive, domestic occupiers, especially will continue to drive the office market of the country," said Vimal Nadar, Senior Director and Head of Research, Colliers India.
