They allege that he has been delaying the decision to disqualify 11 All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) ⁠— the ruling party⁠— legislators for over three years now. All this is playing out even as a DMK’s senior leader <keyword id="505450" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="J-Anbazhagan">J Anbazhagan</keyword> succumbed to COVID-19 infection earlier today, on his 62nd birthday. These members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) had previously voted against Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the incumbent Chief Minister, during a ‘no-confidence’ motion in 2017. The plea for their disqualification has been pending since 20 March 2017 and DMK leader R. Sakkarapani said it will likely remain that way until the government completes its term, unless the Supreme Court intervenes. Amit Anand Tiwari, the lead advocate for DMK, told the Supreme Court that even notice to the MLAs was only issued in February 2020, three years after the fact. "Despite that nothing has been done for the last 4 months, whereas the law requires the Speaker to decide a petition from disqualification within an outer limit of three months,” the plea said. The plea seeks direction to hold the “deliberate action” of the Speaker to not disqualify the MLAs as “arbitrary and violative” of fundamental rights. The election heat is building up Tamil Nadu is set for an election in May 2021 and this could be the first political heat in the run-up to it. (Eds: Adds details) Chennai, Jun 10 () After battling COVID-19 for eight days, DMK legislator and the main opposition party's noted articulate member in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, J Anbazhagan died here on Wednesday at a private hospital. The 62-year old MLA, "who has been fighting for his life with severe COVID-19 pneumonia rapidly deteriorated early this morning. Inspite of full medical support, including mechanical ventilation at our COVID-19 facility, he succumbed to his illness," Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre said in a statement condoling his death. Anbazhagan, who had co-morbidities including chronic kidney disease was put on ventilator support on June 3 -a day after his admission- as his respiratory distress worsened. Subsequently, though he showed improvement with his oxygen requirement sliding to half, his health condition deteriorated significantly on Monday. His oxygen requirement went up once again and his cardiac function and chronic kidney disease also deteriorated and he was declared critical. Initially, on admission, he was managed with high flow oxygen therapy through facemask. He had undergone liver transplant about 15 years ago and he was on medication for that. Chief Minister K Palaniswami said Anbazhagan was a leading DMK functionary and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and party workers. A three-time MLA, Anbazhagan, born on June 10, 1958 incidentally died on his 62nd birthday today and he is the son of late Pazhakadai Jayaraman, a veteran Dravidian movement and DMK leader here. A bold and senior party functionary here, he was the Chennai West District Secretary and he has successfully organised a slew of party events and is close to party chief M K Stalin. A backbencher in the Assembly, Anbazhagan is among DMK's noted articulate members in the House and he had often locked horns with ministers and ruling AIADMK MLAs over several issues. A vocal critic of the AIADMK government, he tore a copy of Governor Barwarilal Purohit's address to the Assembly in January this year and put it on the table of Speaker P Dhanapal and he was briefly suspended. He was elected to the Assembly from here in 2001 (T Nagar), 2011 and 2016 (Chepauk-Triplicane). DMK President M K Stalin condoled Anbazhagan's death and paid rich tributes to him. Expressing shock, Stalin said Anbazhagan slogged without respite to carry out the anti-COVID-19 people's welfare initiatives of the party. Christened 'Ondrinaivom Vaa' which meant let us join to fight coronavirus, it is a DMK's relief initiative. The MLA contracted the virus during his fully dedicated work for the people during the times of the pandemic, Stalin said. Party flags will fly at half-mast for three days and party organised welfare events were being postponed, the DMK chief said. Coimbatore, Jul 5 () An AIADMK MLA from the city tested positive for Coronavirus on Sunday, becoming the fifth ruling party legislator to contract the virus. He has been admitted to the Government ESI Hospital here, a health department official said. The daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter of the MLA were already undergoing treatment at the ESI hospital after contracting the infection, after their return from Madurai a couple of days ago. He had undergone the test three days ago. Earlier, four ruling party MLAs, including Higher Education Minister K P Ambalavanan, had contracted the virus. Chennai, Jun 14 () Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Sunday spoke to a party MLA admitted to a private hospital with COVID-19 and assured him of all necessary medical assistance. The chief minister had a telephonic conversation with Sriperumbudur legislator K Palani, who was admitted to a private hospital in the city, an official release here said. Palaniswami told his junior colleague that he has asked state Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar to ensure all necessary medical assistance to him. He asked Palani to take care of his health, the release said, adding, the former had already spoken to the MLA's sons after he was admitted to the hospital on Friday night. key behind high numbers, says govt Chennai July 4 (): Tamil Nadu may have breached the grim benchmark of one lakh COVID-19 infections, racing to second place in the country behind Maharashtra, but the government says ramped up testing and early detection are among the factors leading to reporting of such high numbers. The southern state's numbers as on Friday clocked a total of 1,02,721 with 1,385 deaths, while recoveries stood at 58,378. The recovery rate is 57 per cent. Around 12.70 lakh samples have been tested so far, the numbers being 35,028 on Friday. The state's fatality rate is 1.3 per cent. Among the many infected include state Higher Education Minister K P Anbalagan. DMK legislator J Anbazhagan, who had tested positive for the deadly virus, died early in June. When health minister Dr C Vijayabaskar took to Twitter to announce the first Coronavirus case in Tamil Nadu on March 7, an engineer from Kancheepuram with a travel history to Oman, little did people imagine the state would register over a lakh cases in a little less than four months. Tamil Nadu seemed comfortable then as neighbouring states like Kerala saw a spike in Coronavirus cases. Though the state reported lower daily increase initially, with the government having high hopes of reversing the trend soon, things changed and the numbers started galloping after two clusters---the Tablighi Jamaat members, and the Koyambedu wholesale market, started redrawing the COVID-19 situation in the state. The government said many cases were imported from other states and countries too. Though initially Chennai with its medical infrastructure and size of population contributed to the high caseloads, other parts in Tamil Nadu too started reporting cases since June. Incidentally, Chennai tops the virus chart with 64,689 cases so far. The government has said density of population is an important factor for the rapid spread of the pandemic in the city. At present, Chennai has 158 containment zones, 50 of which are in Tondiarpet and 43 in Anna Nagar, two of the worst affected areas in the city. Tamil Culture minister K Pandiarajan, entrusted to oversee the work in Tondiarpet, told that "the 2,200 strong field team and the mantra of the Chief Minister (K Palaniswami) to align five Ts - Trace, Track, Test, Treat and Tech-- have helped to increase the recovery rate and brought down the fatalities (in the city)." Chennai's neighbouring districts--Kancheepuram, Chengalpetand Tiruvallur, besides Madurai, are the other districts with high virus caseloads. These districts are presently under intense lockdown to curb the spread of the contagion, although curbs will continue with some relaxations from July 6. Though the state has been reporting high daily tally for the past many days, the government insists that there is no need for panic. "The spike in cases should not make one panic and Chennai's slums need not be compared with those in Mumbai," (another high prevalent zone), according to Health secretary J Radhakrishnan. "The chief minister's strategy of aggressive and increased testing has led to increase in cases. The state's focus is to reduce its fatalities. New Delhi, Jul 5 () A highest single-day surge of nearly 25,000 cases pushed the COVID-19 tally in India to 6,73,165 on Sunday, with states like Assam and Karnataka imposing selective lockdown and tightening restrictions to check the rising infection. The death toll rose by 613, the highest spike in a day so far, to reach 19,268 in the country. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka and West Bengal recorded their highest single-day jump in cases. The worst affected Maharashtra crossed the grim milestone of two lakh COVID-19 cases, Tamil Nadu's tally reached 1.11 lakh and Delhi too was nearing the one lakh mark. Assam announced a two-week lockdown in Dima Hasao district from Monday the second district in the state after Kamrup Metropolitan, which primarily comprises Guwahati city, where it has been imposed. A two-week lockdown from June 28 to July 12 has been imposed in Kamrup Metropolitan. State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the COVID-19 situation in Guwahati, where 2,741 fresh cases were reported in the last 10 days, is alarming and may worsen if the restrictions imposed are not followed seriously by the people. Karnataka has announced a full shutdown barring essential services on Sundays till August 2. Roads wore a deserted look, people stayed indoors and all commercial activities came to a grinding halt on the first such weekly shutdown. The state recorded 1,925 new cases and an aggregate of 23,474. According to the Johns Hopkins University in the United States, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world, India is the fourth worst-hit nation by the pandemic after the US, Brazil and Russia and at the eighth position in terms of the death toll due to the disease. It said the US has reported 28,39,917 and Brazil has 15,77,004 cases. Russia has 6,80,283 cases, the only country among the three which has seen a steady decline in the number of new cases per day. India's COVID-19 graph, however, was still rising with over 20,000 cases for the third consecutive day and the data showed it was inching closer to Russia. The country reported 24,850 new cases in a single day, according to the Union government. Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 2,06,619 after a single-day spike of 6,555. With the death of 151 more patients, the state's fatality count rose to 8,822, according to state authorities. In the national capital, the 10,000-bed Sardar Patel COVID care centre, touted as "one of the largest" facilities in the world, was inaugurated. Also, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh along with Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited a newly-created temporary hospital with 1,000 beds, including 250 in the ICU, for COVID-19 patients. The facility has been constructed in just 12 days near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on a piece of land belonging to the Ministry of Defence. The home minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fully committed to helping the people of Delhi in these challenging times and this COVID hospital, yet again, highlights that resolve. According to authorities, the national capital recorded 2,505 fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the tally to 99, 444 in the city, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,067. Tamil Nadu reported over 4,000 fresh cases for the fourth straight day, taking the tally to 1,11,151, while 60 people succumbed to the virus, pushing the toll to 1,510, the state Health Department said. AIADMK MLA from Coimbatore tested positive for coronavirus, the fifth ruling party legislator to contract the virus. Four DMK MLAs, including J Anbazhagan who had died, had also tested positive for COVID-19. Uttar Pradesh reported a record 1,153 coronavirus cases, pushing the tally to 27,707, while the death toll in the state reached 785 with 12 fresh fatalities, officials said. Andhra Pradesh recorded a new single day high of 998 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday taking the overall tally to 18,697. In Kerala too, a rise in cases has heightened concern among authorities. "It's like we are sitting on top of an active volcano which can burst anytime. Just because there has been no community spread till now doesn't mean it will not occur," state tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said here on Sunday, referring to the COVID-19 situation in capital Thiruvananthapuram. Surendran said the restrictions in force in containment zones would be tightened. Kerala on Sunday reported second highest single day rise of 225 COVID-19 cases, including seven jawans of an Army unit in the state, taking the total to 5,429, the government said. Gujarat reported 725 new coronavirus cases, its highest single-day rise, taking the overall count to 36,123, while in Madhya Pradesh, 326 more people tested positive and its tally rose to 14,930. Odisha's COVID-19 tally has crossed the 9,000 mark with 469 fresh cases, while two more fatalities due to the infection pushed the death toll to 36, a health department official said. According to officials, 60.77 per cent of the patients have recovered so far in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 97,89,066 samples were tested for the disease in the country till July 4, with 2,48,934 of those tested on Saturday. Of the 19,268 deaths reported so far, Maharashtra accounted for 8,671, followed by Delhi (3,004), Gujarat (1,925), Tamil Nadu (1,450), Uttar Pradesh (773), West Bengal (736), Madhya Pradesh (598), Rajasthan (447) and Karnataka (335), according to the Union Health Ministry. The COVID-19 death toll reached 288 in Telangana, 260 in Haryana, 218 in Andhra Pradesh, 162 in Punjab, 127 in Jammu and Kashmir, 89 in Bihar, 42 in Uttarakhand, 34 in Odisha and 25 in Kerala. Jharkhand has registered 17 deaths due to the disease, Chhattisgarh and Assam have reported 14 each, Puducherry has recorded 12, Himachal Pradesh 11, Chandigarh and Goa have registered six each and Meghalaya, Tripura, Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a fatality each, according to ministry.
