When the cabinet of PM Modi was shuffled a few days back, the biggest news came in the form of <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> being replaced by Prakash Javadekar. As soon as the news was announced, people began to speculate the reasons behind this change, one of which was the non-delivery or slow movement on the PMO’s to-do list for higher education. 
 
However, turns out, other than that, she also failed to deliver on the school education to-do list, which was also being closely monitored by the PMO. 
 
As against the five key issues that were undelivered on the higher education side, including the autonomy of IIMs and world-class institutes, school education had a 39 point to-do list, including a focus on improving learning levels, teacher training and vocationalisation. 
 
PM himself reviewed the implementation of actions taken on these issues in a meeting held on March 10. 
 
Even though the ministry was talking about addressing these aspects for over a year now, something concrete was yet to be done. However, some of the steps were taken within the stipulated timelines; however, a majority of steps were yet to be taken, which probably led to Irani’s exit from the ministry.

Political parties all over the country enrolled female star power to increase their visibility in the <keyword id="4577611" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha-election-2019">Lok Sabha Election 2019</keyword>. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headlined four veteran actresses to cheer its cause across the country — Hema Malini, Kirron Kher, Jaya Prada and Smriti Irani, who served as the Textiles Minister during Modi’s 2014 tenure. Congress, on the other hand, brought only one female actress to contest the elections — Urmila Matondkar in Mumbai North. The Election Commission’s counting shows that BJP’s Gopal Shetty, isn’t just leading, but dominating over Matondkar garnering 72.2% of the vote share. Even Poonam Sinha, Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Bollywood candidate, is trailing far behind her contender, BJP’s Rajnath Singh in Lucknow. BJP contestants largely beat exit poll predictions Contesting the Lok Sabha Election from Amethi, a Congress stronghold, Irani seems to be leading over the incumbent Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 10,000 votes according to data from the Election Commission in contrast to the exit poll that predicted a Gandhi victory. During the 2014 election, Gandhi did manage to beat out Irani but she dented his vote share by at least 12%. BJP’s ‘dream girl’ candidate, Hema Malini, flipped from trailing during the initial vote count to commanding a strong lead of 62.2%. Her primary contender, Kunwar Narendra Singh from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) was left in the dust with 33.3% vote share. Jaya Prada, on the other hand, looks unlikely to bring a victory home for the BJP as she trails behind Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Azam Khan in Rampur with a difference larger than 100,000 votes between them.

One of the major changes that the Cabinet saw was dropping <a href="http://www1.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smriti+irani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Smriti Irani</a> as Education Minister and moving her to textiles. 
 
Even though the move was quite anticipated in the party rungs, the demotion came as a surprise to many. 
 
Irani’s exit as education minister was prompted owing to various reasons and now it is to see how she performs in textiles. One should not forget that she still is a Cabinet minister.

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party president, lagged far behind the BJP candidate, <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword>. The face off between the two candidates in 2014 was a win for Gandhi, but Irani managed to cut his vote count down by 12%. The tables turned out this time around with Irani leading over Gandhi over over 50,000 votes. The Gandhi legacy was undercut by a difference of 6% in vote share. Gandhi conceded defeat during a press conference he held after vote counting yesterday. Since Amethi was formed, non-Congress parties have only ever come into power twice. According to India Today-My Axis exit polls, Congress’ individual position wasn't as bright as compared to a Congress-led alliance coming into power. And, even that ‘popularity’ was only at a three percent margin as compared to BJP. It helps both parties that the Mahagathbandhan between the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) didn’t field their own candidate in Amethi. Gandhi has been called out for being missing in action, even failing to show up on the day of polling. Irani has been building on the ‘missing MP’ momentum by ensuring that her visibility poses a considerable challenge to Gandhi’s campaigning efforts. BJP President, Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath have been backing her efforts with appearances at public rallies in Amethi. During the 2014 <keyword id="43815" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha-election">Lok Sabha election</keyword>, Irani may not have won but she had a severe impact on Gandhi’s margin of victory — by <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/lok-sabha-2019/story/lok-sabha-election-2019-amethi-priyanka-gandhi-vadra-smriti-irani-rahul-gandhi-1516073-2019-05-03">as much as</a> 12%. Gandhi came out on top but only with the lowest vote share ever recorded by a Congress candidate in Amethi. Congress and Uttar Pradesh BJP already took Amethi out from under Congress during the Assembly Elections in 2017, winning four out of the five seats up for grabs. And, even Gauriganj — where BJP lost — did not go to Congress, but to SP. The current situation in Amethi is a far cry from the days of Rajiv Gandhi — Rahul Gandhi’s father — when it was difficult for BJP to even have a party office in the constituency, let alone fly the party flag. The chances of winning in any constituency in Uttar Pradesh look rosier for Sonia Gandhi — member of Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s mother — who’s contesting the Lok Sabha Election from Raebarelli. And, as for Rahul Gandhi, his chances of winning in Wayanad, Kerala are more likely than in Amethi.

Amethi Lok Sabha Election 2019: Rahul Gandhi loses to Smriti Irani by over 50,000 votes

<keyword id="6358821" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-sena">Shiv Sena</keyword> and BJP combine was headed for a win in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, leading in 43 constituencies. During 2019 <keyword id="6355187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections, 542 out of 543 constituencies went for polling. The exit polls conducted by a majority of agencies had predicted a landslide victory for both BJP and Shiv Sena along with their allies. Chanakya and India Today My Axis exit polls presumed that NDA, the BJP led alliance would win from more than 350 seats. However, Neta-News X and News-Nielsen forecast the alliance might fall short of a few seats for majority with 242 and 267 seats predicted by them for the alliance respectively. While Neta-NewsX has predicted the lowest number of seats for the alliance at 242 constituencies, Chanakya has forecasted about 350 seats, the maximum for the alliance announced by any exit poll agency for 2019 Lok Sabha election result. The Chanakya exit poll has also forecasted a clean sweep for the BJP led alliance in the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Delhi where they might win all the 26, 10, 5 and 7 seats respectively. In 2014 general elections for the Lok Sabha, the results were favorable to the BJP with the party and its alliance winning a clear majority in the parliament by bagging 282 seats out of 543. The severe floods and rising political uncertainty have caused the country's economic situation to deteriorate further in the last few months. Ishaq Dar, the <keyword id="25455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance" source="Orion">Finance</keyword> Minister of the country, who replaced <keyword id="1741315" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="miftah-ismail" source="Orion">Miftah Ismail</keyword> a month ago has had little impact on the situation. Local newspaper <keyword id="59588" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dawn" source="Orion">Dawn</keyword> in its report said that forex reserves held by the country's central bank were close to nil. Of the total amount, $2.3 billion has been credited by China, $3 billion was deposited by Saudi Arabia and $1.2 billion came from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The rest is also based on borrowings from commercial banks, the newspaper said, adding that Pakistan seems to be isolated. Though the South Asian nation has managed to avert an immediate default, its foreign exchange reserves continue to remain below the $8 billion mark. While Pakistan would require about $32 billion for debt repayment in the current financial year, on October 21, the country's foreign currency reserves stood at $7,439.9 million, a fall of $157 million compared to $7,597.2 million held by the State Bank of Pakistan on October 14. After the initial recovery soon after Dar assumed charge, the Pakistani currency is once again on a slide. On Monday, however, it managed to gain more than Rs 2 a dollar. It traded at about 220.5 to a US dollar on Monday after Friday's close of Rs 222.47. An analyst dealing with South Asia said that the economic crisis will linger "until bold reforms are implemented." "But that is not going to be the case and now with general elections inching closer, policies may be more towards populism. We saw how Miftah Ismail (Pakistan's former finance minister) was removed despite being able to steer away from a default," he told India Narrative. After Moody's, rating agency <keyword id="82981" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fitch" source="Orion">Fitch</keyword> too has downgraded Pakistan's Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'CCC+' from 'B-'. This will make borrowing even tougher. In its statement, Fitch said that the downgrade reflects further deterioration in Pakistan's external liquidity and funding conditions, and the decline of foreign exchange reserves. This is partly a result of widespread floods, which will undermine Pakistan's efforts to rein in twin fiscal and current account deficits. Fitch typically does not assign outlooks to sovereigns with a rating of 'CCC+' or below, it said in its statement. Earlier, Pakistan-based think tank Tabadlab said: "that FATF grey-listing, starting in 2008 and till 2019, may have resulted in cumulative real GDP losses of approximately $38 billion." The country had been put on the FATF grey list since June 2018.
