The pilots declared an emergency and diverted to the nearest airport. This happened to be in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/residents-in-canadas-far-north-are-terrified-of-losing-amazon-prime-2017-7">Iqaluit</a>, the capital of Canada's Nunavut territory, which has a population of less than 8,000. <keyword id="21651089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Iqaluit" source="keywords">Iqaluit</keyword>, formerly known as Frobisher Bay, lies in the region sometimes known as the Canadian Arctic, though the city itself is just outside the true Arctic Circle. Data from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/f-gsqt">Flightradar24</a> shows a different plane was rerouted to rescue the passengers. The Boeing 777 was scheduled to fly from Montreal to Paris, but that flight was canceled. Nearly 11 hours after the passengers had landed in Iqaluit, the 777 departed for New York. CBC reported that passengers will be rerouted from New York as soon as possible. Flightradar24 shows the 777 was scheduled to fly from New York to Seattle early Wednesday morning, but this flight was canceled. In a statement sent to the travel news site Paddle Your Own Kanoo, Air France said it "regrets the inconvenience caused by this situation and reiterates that the safety of its customers and crews is its absolute imperative." The 787 Dreamliner is still in Iqaluit. CBC reported that it is grounded while crews investigate what caused the burning smell. "The cockpit crew then decided to shut down one engine for landing as a precaution and to land in Luanda with priority status," the airline told Insider. "The aircraft landed safely. Safety on board was not compromised at any time."<a href="https://twitter.com/flightradar24/status/1599029596720189440">According to data from Flightradar24</a>, the plane squawked 7700, which <a href="https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/squawking-7700-in-flight-emergencies-from-a-pilots-perspective/">means there is an emergency</a> and the pilots need immediate assistance from air traffic control.The Aviation Herald, a commercial aircraft accident and incident reporting publication, <a href="http://avherald.com/h?article=501e4562&amp;opt=0">reported</a> on Monday that the plane was still on the ground in Luanda 20 hours after landing and will need its left engine replaced. The airline told Insider the passengers were given a hotel room, where they "were looked after around the clock by Lufthansa staff." It further explained each customer was rebooked within 48 hours. However, NTV reported some passengers were offered flights for days or even weeks later, but Lufthansa told Insider that all passengers will have left by Monday — three days after the diversion to Luanda."The first passengers [left] already on Saturday, the remaining passengers fly [Monday] with LH561 via Frankfurt to their destinations," the carrier said. Even accounting for the government subsidy program Nutrition North, everyday household and food items cost drastically more in stores in Canada's northern regions than in their wealthier southern counterparts.The region's food insecurity problem has become so drastic that one report said it <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/food-insecurity-1.4122103">should be considered a "national crisis."</a> For example, <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/nunavut-food-price-survey-2016-1.3650637">a five pound bag of flour</a> in 2016 cost shoppers around $10.63 in Nunavut, but on Amazon Prime <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Pillsbury-Best-All-Purpose-Flour/dp/B005EOTMA6/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=grocery&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1499728946&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=flour">the same amount of flour</a> cost just $2.39.Some Nunavit communities outside of Iqaluit lost their Amazon Prime deliveries when Amazon re-evaluated its remote location shipping in 2015, CBC reported. But they worry it may not be enough.
