Focused funds are a type of mutual fund where the fund manager selects a concentrated portfolio of stocks, typically limited to a maximum of 30 due to regulatory constraints. This requires the fund manager to be highly skilled in stock selection, as they need to identify the best investment opportunities across the market without bias toward any specific market cap or sector. According to data from the <keyword id="20090034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="association-of-mutual-funds" source="keywords">Association of Mutual Funds</keyword> in India (Amfi), the assets under management (AUM) of the focused funds were at Rs 1.43 lakh crore in the June quarter 2024-25 as compared to Rs 1.09 lakh crore in April-June FY24. "With the increase in taxation on both small-term capital gain tax and long-term capital gain tax, PMS portfolios are expected to see a drop in post-tax returns. For example, a PMS portfolio generating a pre-tax return of 14 % could see post-tax returns drop from 11.73 % to 11.29 %. This shift could lead to fund managers churning portfolios less frequently, which in turn will be affecting returns for investors," he added. Focused funds follow a similar concentrated portfolio strategy where the fund manager picks the top stocks and offers flexibility across market caps. Thus, becoming a more attractive option for investors looking to optimize their returns. Industry experts recommend investing in focused funds through systematic investment plans (SIPs) as a smart strategy in the current market environment of sector rotation and high valuations. Since these funds invest in a small number of stocks, SIPs can help reduce risk by spreading out investments over time. Overall, there are 31 focused schemes offered by different mutual fund houses in the category. These schemes have given returns of 19-60% in the last one year. In terms of returns, smaller funds have performed exceptionally well. The Invesco India Focused Fund delivered a remarkable return of over 60% in the past year, while Mahindra Manulife Focused Fund provided around 50% returns and JM Focused Fund offered a return of 45% during the period. With a corpus of Rs 1,552 crore as of June 2024, Mahindra Manulife Focused Fund has consistently performed well, securing the second rank for 1, 2, and 3-year periods. The fund delivered returns of 50%, 32%, and 26% over these periods, respectively. HDFC Focused 30 Fund achieved the top rank over the 3 years with a return of 28.63 %, while JM Focused Fund secured the third rank with a 25 % return during the same period. The development, reported by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-26/invesco-renews-demand-for-zee-entertainment-board-reshuffle">Bloomberg</a> on Monday, said that Invesco and Oppenheimer Funds, in a September 23 letter, renewed their demand to convene an EGM to replace the board at Zee. A similar demand was made by Invesco on September 11. “A newly constituted board supported with the strength of independence will be best suited to evaluate and oversee the potential for strategic transactions,” according to the Sept. 23 letter from Aroon Balani, vice president of Invesco, as cited by Bloomberg. Earlier this month, the funds had also asked for the removal of Punit Goenka, the chief executive and managing director of Zee Entertainment, from the company’s board, citing issues with corporate governance at the firm. The letter also demanded removal of independent directors, Ashok Kurien and Manish Chokhani, who later resigned from the board. Despite Invesco’s letter, Zee went ahead and announced the company’s merger with Sony Pictures Networks India on September 22. Based on disclosures filed with exchanges, Sony will hold a majority stake of 52.93% in the merged entity and infuse growth capital of about $1.6 billion once the deal closes. Zee shareholders, post the deal, will hold the balance 47.07% in the merged entity. While low- or no-fee ETFs don't make much money for their managers, the firms could benefit from higher volume and securities lending. Presumably, investors will also tack on less-discounted products, using that investment firm for other parts of their portfolios. Rosenbluth pointed out that new low-cost ETFs are finding it difficult to stand out in an increasingly crowded space. Invesco, for example, launched a large- and mid-cap-focused ETF in September 2017 with a 0.04% fee. Even though the product has outperformed Schwab's comparable ETF - which has a 0.03% fee - Invesco has only picked up $3 million for its fund. Schwab, by contrast, has added $3 billion of new capital this year. If Invesco cut its fee completely, it could jump start flows, Rosenbluth said. JPMorgan is another potential zero-fee manager. A spokeswoman for JPMorgan declined to comment.Meanwhile, Schwab - whose <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jon-de-st-paer-talks-what-makes-schwab-different-2018-12">president told Business Insider recently that he's focused on keeping a streamlined product lineup</a> - could remove the small fees on one or two of its products without denting its $10 billion annual revenue, Rosenbluth said. Instead, the firm "could benefit from increased asset growth and trading volumes." "We have learned that while some investors like the idea, others remain skeptical of the concept and prefer to have greater transparency into how they pay their asset manager and their brokerage account provider," a Schwab spokeswoman said. "We will continue to talk with investors to learn about their preferences, and monitor market activity to inform any future steps we may take - all while making sure we put clients first." State Street has already seen the positive impact of fee reduction. The firm cut the fees of its total return ETF to 0.03% in late 2017, then saw $1.6 billion in new capital this year - still less than a comparable iShares ETF, which pulled in $3.4 billion. A free fund could help State Street recoup some of its recent market share losses to iShares and Vanguard, Rosenbluth said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The largest exchange-traded fund in the world saw the most investor exits in a single month since its inception.</li><li>The S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust had almost $7 billion worth of redemptions on Monday alone, Bloomberg found.</li><li>Invesco's <keyword id="12151582" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="qqq" source="Orion">QQQ</keyword> has had the biggest monthly exit since the dot-com bubble burst, the report said.</li></ul>The biggest exchange-traded fund in the world had the worst monthly <keyword id="12224035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="outflows" source="Orion">outflows</keyword> in its history in January amid a broader market rout, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-02-01/worst-ever-outflows-for-spy-etf-as-qqq-bleeds-most-since-dot-com?srnd=markets-vp">data compiled by Bloomberg News</a>. The data showed redemptions in the S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust, which trades under the ticker "SPY" and has more than $400 billion in assets, were the highest since 1993, when the fund launched. The ETF lost almost $7 billion on Monday alone, Bloomberg reported.The well-known ETF tracks the S&amp;P 500 Index. So far this year, it has lost 6.1%, closely mirroring the slump in the broader index.SPY hasn't been the sole fund to experience massive outflows. Last month, the S&amp;P 500 sank more than 5%, with speculative and tech stocks getting hammered. Over the summer, Invesco polled more than 200 professional investors, such as <keyword id="12217395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pension-funds" source="Orion">pension funds</keyword> and <keyword id="70387" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="insurers" source="Orion">insurers</keyword>, and discovered that 12% of them planned to reduce Chinese assets in their portfolios. Chinese assets will shrink from big investors' portfolios amid regulatory concerns, new data shows

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="3080156" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bestinvest">BestInvest</keyword>, an online investment platform, just released their twice-yearly "<keyword id="10799202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spot-the-dog">Spot the Dog</keyword>" report.</li><li>The report analyses the worst-performing funds across different sectors.</li><li>These are the five firms that had the most assets under management in the list.</li></ul>Even the biggest names in asset management can get it wrong and BestInvest just called out some of the top losers.In its twice-yearly 'Spot the Dog' report, the online investment service names and shames the top underperforming funds and firms, and <keyword id="365425" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Invesco">Invesco</keyword> has topped the list for the sixth time in a row."The top slot in Spot the Dog continues to be held by Invesco with 11 funds totalling £9.2 billion. Four of these funds are Tibetan Mastiff-sized beasts," the report said.However, the report, which doesn't win any popularity contest among fund managers, does note that Invesco's number of funds that made the list has fallen this time.<h2>What is a 'dog fund'?</h2>So how does BestInvest identify the funds that fall into this somewhat cruel category using two filters?First, it filters by fund universe to identify "those that have failed to beat the benchmark over three consecutive 12-month periods," the report said.The benchmark chosen by BestInvest is determined by the sector the fund, designating one that operates in an index that "represents the overall movements in the market that the fund operates in," it said.This highlights those that have consistently underperformed and allows the research to remove those that "may simply have had a short run of bad luck," it added.Secondly, the funds must have underperformed the benchmark by 5% or more over the entire three-year period of analysis.<h2>The Kennel Club</h2>These are the firms with the most assets under management, which made the list because of their "dog funds":<h3>1. Invesco</h3>For the sixth time running, Invesco has landed the top "dog" spot, with 11 funds making the list, worth £9.2 billion in total. Admittedly, this is down from 13 funds valued at £11.4 billion from the last report.Two of the firm's funds were repeat offenders on the list: Invesco's UK Equity High Income and UK Equity Income funds, delivering -21% and -19% respectively over a three year period compared to the benchmark.But, in the firm's defence these funds were only recently handed to new managers, "who are now tasked with turning them around," the report said.Moreover, Invesco has gone through a broad shakeup over the last year after the appointment of a new chief investment officer, Stephanie Butcher."This is clearly a work in progress," the report added.<h3>2. <keyword id="34757" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jupiter">Jupiter</keyword></h3>The UK-based firm Jupiter leapt up the rankings from ninth to second place in this report following its July 2020 acquisition of Merian Global Investors, making it "rescue home for two sizeable beasts," the note saidThe now enlarged group oversees 8 "dog funds", totalling £4.1 billion of assets. The biggest of these is the Merian North American Equity fund, which has seen a -14% return in the last three years compared to the benchmark.<h3>3. St. James Place</h3>St James's Place's (<keyword id="282529" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="SJP">SJP</keyword>) in-house fund range has frequently "lurked near the top spot in the hall of shame" and sits in third position with four funds totalling £4 billion, the report said.The number of SJP funds that made this edition has halved since the last with the SJP UK High Income fund, previously managed by fallen star <keyword id="2498128" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Neil-Woodford">Neil Woodford</keyword>, escaping the shaming.The SJP Global Smaller Companies fund was one of this edition's biggest losers in the Global sector, coming fifth in that particular list and trailing the benchmark by -32%.<h3>4. <keyword id="133746" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Schroders">Schroders</keyword></h3>Schroders took this edition's fourth place after it number of funds to make the list rose to 11, with an increase of £4 billion in asset.Three of the Schroder's included are managed by its QEP team, the report highlight, who use a "systematic, data driven investment process."Both the Schroder European Recovery and Global Recovery funds - which target undervalued companies - made the list, underperforming the benchmark -22% and -33% respectively. These, and the firm's income funds <keyword id="35175" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investing">investing</keyword> in the US, Europe and globally, struggled in the 2020 environment where 'growth' stocks significantly outperformed.These growth sectors include technology and communications services which have been the biggest 'COVID-winners', like video-conferencing software Zoom and EV company Tesla.Therefore, growth strategies largely left funds targeting undervalued companies or dividend-generating businesses lagging in the dust during 2020.However, if the global economy recovers as most banks are forecasting, these 'recovery' or 'value' plays could catch-up, making significant gains.Of note, the report excluded the £3.3 billion 'dog fund' managed by the firm in its joint venture with Lloyds Bank.<h3>5. <keyword id="188135" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="JPMorgan-Asset-Management">JPMorgan Asset Management</keyword></h3>JPMorgan's inclusion in the top five came down solely due to the JP Morgan US Equity Income fund with its huge £3.2 billion in AUM, which fell -27% below the benchmark, the report said.Unfortunately for JPMAM, the fund has been underweight technology stocks in a period when companies like FAANG and tech cult names like Tesla have been market leaders, as many tech companies do not pay dividends.But, like Schroders, this could turn around if value sectors like Banks and energy - which are the main dividend payers - catch up on any economic recovery.
