When the Modi-led government announced the first International Day of Yoga on June 21st last year, it got them huge appreciation from all corners of the world. This year, to make the event even more impressive, the Modi government is not leaving any stone upturned. 
 
This year, the event would be even longer, with advanced yoga retreats for foreigners in scenic locations in India and arranging a mass Yoga demonstration in either Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, the states ruled by BJP government. 
 
The government also wants to ensure that all institutes including the UGC, AICTE, NITs, IITs, IIITs, IISERs, SPAS and NITTRs make their 100% participation in the event. For promotion purposes, a special 4-minute long 'Yoga Geet' will also be released and played at the event. 
 
All this is decided by a high-level committee which is headed by PM's Yoga guru Dr HR Nagendra, who is also the Vice chancellor of the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana. He has held several meetings with top officials across ministries so that the event has a considerable fanfare. 
 
Apart from this, the committee would also hold a yoga conference from 21-23rd June, where the traditional approach of Yoga, its health benefits based on evidence, production of evidence-based research and Yoga for health education would be discussed.

Modi government wants the International Day of Yoga to be bigger and better this year

<keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>’s brainchild - The <keyword id="2630655" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="International-Day-of-Yoga">International Day of Yoga</keyword> has found acceptance with <keyword id="509209" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="UN-Secretary-General-Ban-Ki-moon">UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon</keyword> as he said Yoga only helps bring a "simple sense of satisfaction. 
 
Ban recalls that it took him a while to gain balance when he tried yoga for the first time in Delhi, but he soon felt it was accessible for anyone. 
 
"And yoga does not discriminate; to varying degrees, all people can practise, regardless of their relative strength, age or ability. I discovered this for myself on trying to do my first asana, a tree pose suited to beginners. It took a moment for me to gain my balance, but once I did, I appreciated the simple sense of satisfaction that yoga can bring," the UN chief said. 
 
In celebrating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, the UN General Assembly has recognized the "holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the United Nations," Ban said. 
 
"Yoga offers a simple, accessible and inclusive means to promote physical and spiritual health and well-being. It promotes respect for one's fellow human beings and for the planet we share," he said. 
 
Ban asked the nations to "see the benefits of this practice in terms of individual well-being, as well as our collective efforts to improve public health, promote peaceful relations and usher in a life of dignity for all." 
 
The 193-member UNGA adopted the resolution to celebrate June 21 as International Day of Yoga was accepted in record time, and a record 177 countries co-sponsored the India-led resolution. 
 
Huge preparations are afoot across USA to celebrate the day with India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj expected to head the celebrations at the UN and Times Square.

This year, the International Day of Yoga, marked on June 21, will be commemorated virtually due to the COVID-19-related restrictions in place and requirements of social distancing. "The COVID-19 pandemic has created a new reality for many of us. It has disrupted lives, created loneliness caused by social distancing as it has also led to increased anxiety caused by economic difficulties, fear of illness and worry about loved ones. This is only natural. This year's celebration comes amidst this critical context," UNGA President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande said in a virtual message. In commemorating the International Day of Yoga this year, he said "we recognise the important benefits of practicing yoga and its potential in helping people deal with increased anxiety due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic." In previous years, India's Permanent Mission commemorated the day at a grand scale in the UN premises. However, this time the mission hosted a virtual 'Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home' session on Friday to mark the International Yoga Day at a time when the global outbreak of COVID-19 has upended lives and disrupted lifestyles of people across the world. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said the global outbreak of COVID-19 has "upended lives and disrupted lifestyles" of people across the world. "Studies indicate a rise in depression and anxiety among people due to the difficulty in adapting to such lifestyle changes," he said, adding that there is a growing trend of people from many parts of the world embracing yoga to fight social isolation and depression during the pandemic. Tirumurti said to commemorate Yoga Day this year under the theme of 'Yoga for Health, Yoga for Home', the endeavour has been to put together simple yoga modules, carefully designed by experienced yoga gurus, that can be practiced from home by all age groups. Muhammad-Bande said celebration of the International Day of Yoga is a "unique opportunity" to recognise the holistic approach to health and well being provided by the practice of yoga especially in times like this. "Global health is a long term objective that requires close international cooperation and exchange of best practices. Health no longer only implies the condition of not being sick. It's also about being actively well," he said, adding that multiple studies have confirmed the interdependent mental and physical benefits of yoga. "The meaning of yoga is most commonly interpreted as a union - the union of the mind and the body - but it also signifies the interconnectedness of the human body and spirit to all the elements of the world that surrounds us." The specially-designed module included a session by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on 'Yoga for Respiratory Health' where the spiritual leader spoke about the need and importance of maintaining an inner balance during these challenging times. In a 15 minute session 'Yoga for Soothing the Heart', Yoga Guru Kishor Chandra from the Bhakti Center led followers through asanas and pranayama that will help balance and soothe the heart. A meditation session from Sahaj Yoga on a guided meditation exercise aimed to relax the mind was also part of the module. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said the coronavirus pandemic is "one of the biggest challenges that we as a generation have faced." "It is most important that we as human beings function at our best. Our physical self, our intellect, our emotional balance everything should be at its best, our innate wisdom must function now because now there is a crisis outside. You cannot afford to create a crisis within you," he said. The spiritual leader underscored that during this moment of pandemic and in the post-pandemic world, "one of the biggest challenges will be psychological crisis that human beings will face. When a problem is thrown at us, we should not become a problem. This is very important. There is no better way to approach life than through the yogic system." Tirumurti said the celebration of the International Day of Yoga is a testimony to Yoga's global appeal and the substantial medical and scientific evidence that acknowledges the efficacy of yoga in promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyles. The 6th International Day of Yoga will be commemorated virtually this year due to COVID-19 restrictions in place and requirements of social distancing. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN will commemorate the International Day of Yoga on June 19, at a time when the global outbreak of COVID-19 has upended lives and disrupted lifestyles of people across the world, the mission said. Recognising the important role of yoga, the mission, together with yoga gurus and therapists, has created a special yoga module, 'Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home' on the occasion of the International Yoga Day. The mission said that the module is a safe set of yoga practices, based on available scientific evidence, designed for all age-groups, which can be practiced from homes. The module, which includes simple yoga exercises, breathing and meditation practices to improve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, will be webcast on various virtual platforms on June 19. The mission noted that adapting to lifestyle changes such as work from home and lack of physical contact with friends and colleagues have been particularly challenging for people. "Studies indicate that there has been a rise in depression, anxiety, and fear than normal among people during these changing times. The increasing psychological suffering, mental health problems and the mental health dimension of this pandemic needs to be effectively addressed," the mission said in a press release. Given the increase in depression and anxiety among people in the era of coronavirus, the message of yoga in promoting physical and mental health and the well-being of humanity have never been more relevant, it added. He also said that the government is setting up Naturopathy Certification Board on the lines of Yoga Certification Board. And amidst the boom of online fitness, India’s age-old practice of yoga too donned a virtual avatar. And riding on the popularity of yoga is Ira Yoga Wellness. Ira Trivedi, who has long been an advocate for yoga and wellness in India, found herself at the right spot in the beginning of the coronavirus lockdown. Ira Yoga Wellness, which under its umbrella had physical classes along with a gamified app where people were rewarded for doing yoga, saw a sudden spike in interest. “The app actually started doing well during the pandemic as corporates offered their employees something more during work from home as a part of their corporate wellness initiatives,” Trivedi told Business Insider. Trivedi has been at the forefront of the yoga movement in India having been a part of the first International Day of Yoga at Rajpath New Delhi. While Trivedi calls the app a passion project, it was her quick decision to go online with live yoga classes that really did the trick. “We began with offering free yoga classes and everyone came online. We slowly grew from having one class a day to having six-seven classes a day. We grew along with the customer demand and kept responding to what our students wanted,” she said. Since March, Ira Yoga Wellness has launched yoga for kids, yoga for seniors, yoga for teens and more such classes to keep their students engaged. Doubling down every month Today, they have over 5000 active users and have seen a 100% month-on-month growth with repeat customers. Ira believes it is the different way in which they teach yoga that got their students hooked. For any live class, they create an ambience with soothing live music to make it as real as possible for the students. “We have teachers from five different countries and all follow the standard Yog Love format of teaching. We really figured out how to teach yoga online – every single class was interactive and it wasn’t like a youtube channel you are just following,” she said. And it is this format that got their users talking. “We have seen a completely organic growth, which is our strength. Most of our growth is from referrals where our current members invite their friends and family to come try yoga with us,” she said. A long road ahead for Yog Love They have also started live training courses to encourage more people to become yoga teachers. “It’s beautiful to see more and more women sign up for it. By teaching yoga from home, women can earn money while staying at home and all they need is a phone,” she said. Yoga might have become a favourite at-home exercise during lockdown. But Trivedi is gunning for more. During the lockdown, they even organised Yogathons which was an 11-hour event of yoga. “Yogathon is a whole day of yoga, meditation, healing, nutrition, and more for our users,” she said. While Yog Love has been profitable from the get go because they don’t spend much on marketing and instead have relied on organic growth and brand collaborations, Trivedi has left one door open for the possibilities of more. “We are very happy with where we are today, but we are being approached by many to consider expanding and we are beginning to consider external funding to go global,” she said.
