Vishal Sikka, who just left SAP last month, has surfaced at a new company. He <a href="http://www.infosys.com/newsroom/press-releases/Pages/ceo-announcement.aspx">is the new CEO of Indian outsourcer Infosys.</a>
Last month, German software giant SAP shocked the world when it announced that Sikka <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sources-why-vishal-sikka-left-sap-2014-5">was suddenly leaving the company</a>. Sikka was its star engineer and creator of HANA, the database product that SAP has bet its future on.
Sources told Business Insider that a few things led to his departure: When the company moved from its dual-CEO structure to a single CEO in charge, Sikka was hoping for a big promotion akin to a co-CEO role and that didn't happen. We also heard that there was a tussle inside SAP between its American executives, of which Sikka was a prominent member, and its German contingent over how fast to invest in new technologies like the cloud. Some of that was documented in an article about Sikka in <a href="http://www.e-3.de/artikel/doppelspitze/">German magazine DAS E-3 </a> and <a href="http://vishalsikka.blogspot.com/">a personal blog post, </a><a href="http://vishalsikka.blogspot.com/">not sanctioned by SAP</a><a href="http://vishalsikka.blogspot.com/">, that Sikka wrote in response,</a> blasting the article.
So Sikka left SAP.
And now he's going to try and fix Infosys, the iconic but troubled tech company in his native land of India.
Infosys is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/most-valuable-enterprise-tech-companies-2014-5%20">one of the most valuable enterprise tech companies in the world</a> with a market cap of roughly $30 billion.
For years, Infosys also reigned as one of the most admired companies in India. But slower growth compared to its competitors has caused employees and managers to leave in droves. The company has also been looking for a new CEO for about a year too. Attrition reached 18% by the end of March and more than 11 senior executives have left in the past year, the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/infosys-names-vishal-sikka-new-ceo-1402546764">Wall Street Journal reports.</a>
Wall Street analyst Tom Reuner at Ovum tells Business Insider in an email comment, "Sikka will be the first CEO that is neither part of the founding generation nor an insider from Infosys. Sikka was highly regarded within SAP and his remit was to foster innovation. ... This mindset could be conducive to lead Infosys back to its past glory. ... Sikka's task is a daunting one. We envisage a bumpy road ahead."

CEO <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> is doing everything he can to achieve his target of making <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> a $ 20-billion company by 2020. With his aim in sight, Sikka has started preparing blueprint for the same. 
 
To achieve his goals, Sikka plans heavy-mining top 100 clients of the company and assign each of them with dedicated partners. The CEO also plans to drive up margins through automation, squeeze higher share of revenues from services like consulting and acquisitions. 
 
In a bid to turnaround the fortunes of Infosys, Sikka himself is dedicating more time with company’s top customers like Bank of America and Apple. 
As per the insiders, Sikka has made it a top priority for the company's senior management to help mine these accounts. 
 
"If you look at the past few years, TCS and Cognizant have been far ahead of Infosys in terms of incremental revenue generation. So mining the top accounts and maximising revenues is the centre-piece of the new-and-renew strategy," the source told Economic Times. 
 
Top customers like Microsoft, Phillips and ABN AMRO were briefed on the company's strategic bets during the Infosys Confluence last month. Infosys is targeting incremental revenue growth -- a similar strategy adopted by larger rivals such as Accenture and Cognizant. Infosys is also looking to strengthen the sales teams assigned to these accounts. 
 
During the event, Sikka also told customers that company’s design-thinking approach has so far generated over a 100 consulting projects. 
 
Infosys has trained about 25,000 employees in design-thinking and another 22,000 would be trained in the ongoing financial year. Infosys has also trained about 1,000 employees in artificial intelligence. 
Infosys is also making a strong push towards automation in its existing commoditised businesses. ET reported the company has set a long-term internal target of up to 70% automation in its infrastructure management business, and up to 55% automation in its business process outsourcing business. 
 Presently, 35-40% of its BPO processes are automated. Sikka aims to generate 10% of the company's overall revenues from new fields like analytics and <keyword id="6373689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cloud-computing">cloud computing</keyword> by 2020. 
 
In BPO, Infosys also plans to roll out offerings like forecasting-as-a-service, big data, analytics, digital asset management and search. 
 
"The company needs to increase organic per capita revenue to at least $75,000 in the face of 'tremendous pricing pressure' that the CEO foresees for this business," UBS Analyst Diviya Nagarajan said in a note to clients last week, adding, “We view this as a significant challenge as it will entail substantial organisational change with a limited safety margin." 
 
Infosys, which will launch a rebranding campaign in the upcoming months, plans to hire about 25,000-30,000 employees this year.

Know how Vishal Sikka is preparing to turn Infosys into a $ 20 billion company

Even after <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>’ announcement to appoint <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> as its CEO and MD, the IT giant’s stock came under selling pressure on Thursday. It seems investors are worried that it might be too late for Sikka to be able to revive the company. Sikka has to face the following major challenges in his endeavour to inject new life into Infosys: 
 
The challenge of growth Infosys has been able to increase its number of clients, but this has not resulted in higher revenue growth. Its sequential revenue growth lagged behind that of other IT companies like <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>, Cognizant and HCL Technologies. 
 
The changing nature of deliverables 
The global IT outsourcing industry has shifted from traditional wage arbitrage to multi-year deals. Presently, Infosys derives more than 7% revenue from remote infrastructure management (RIM), compared to its peers who get 12-34% revenue from this segment. This makes it imperative for Sikka to concentrate on increasing the company’s exposure to RIM. 
 
Higher employee attrition rate 
Infosys has not been able to control the rate of attrition in recent times. The attrition rate was 18.7% in the last quarter of FY2013-14. Talent management and retention will be a challenge for Sikka. 
 
Descending profitability 
Over the past few quarters, Infosys has been suffering a steep fall in operating margin. In the last quarter of FY2013-14, it reported an operating margin of 25.5% as compared to more than 30% in the same quarter of FY2009-10. 
 
Sikka will have to wade through these challenges as he looks to bring back the glorious days of Infosys.

Reviving Infosys Won’t Be
Easy For Vishal Sikka

<keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> CEO <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> conceded that the company’s performance was below expectations in FY15 but said that it was on track for better performance this year, during the 34 th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company. 
 
"I think we still have a long way to go. My sense is that by next year in FY17, we will get to industry-leading growth," Sikka told reporters. 
 Meanwhile, NR <keyword id="6355623" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narayana-Murthy">Narayana Murthy</keyword> lauded Sikka for his stewardship of Infosys as its first nonfounder CEO, and ruled out another encore by returning to a company he founded with six others in 1981. 
 
"I wish (Sikka) the best for the future. I'm extremely happy and I think he's a great leader. He has aspirational targets. We should all support him, we should all pray that he succeeds," said Murthy on the sidelines of the AGM. 
Sikka, who took charge on August 1 last year reiterated that Infosys should return to industry-leading growth rates during the next financial year. 
 
Former CEO and chairman Murthy, who for the first time in the history of the company attended the shareholder meeting as just a stakeholder in Infosys also praised the current leadership team of the company. 
 
"There's absolutely no doubt everybody there on the podium is smart, dedicated - they're working hard. They want the best for Infosys and therefore we are all 100% with them," he said. 
 
Economic Times reported that prior to Sikka's appointment, Murthy undertook a massive organisational overhaul at Infosys as part of his turnaround plan for the company. The overhaul led to the departure of more than a dozen toplevel executives. He added that he had no plans of returning to Infosys nor was there any need for him to. 
 
"The reality is that today we have a very good set of people running the company -- they should run the company, we should all support them, we should cheer them from outside, so there's no need for anybody from outside to get back into Infosys," said Murthy. 
 
Meanwhile, Sikka also brushed away concerns over the H1B visa issue and said that the company was fully compliant with US laws. 
"We're not worried about that (H1B issue) - I'm a US citizen. We have an impregnable compliance to these regulations and we're absolutely committed. We carry that responsibility extremely seriously and I know other companies in the industry do so as well," said Sikka. 
 
Newly-appointed non-executive chairman R Seshasayee, who succeeds KV Kamath in the role, referred to Murthy as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of Infosys and said that Infosys would continue to seek Murthy's counsel and guidance on important issues as and when required.

Here’s what happened at the Infosys’ AGM

Ahead of <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>’ annual shareholder meeting on Monday, the first non-founder chief executive officer, <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> has highlighted some of the biggest achievements of the country’s second-largest software exporter during the past one year, in his blog. He also paid tribute to outgoing <keyword id="177384" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="non-executive-chairman">non-executive chairman</keyword> <keyword id="396965" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="KV-Kamath">KV Kamath</keyword>, according to an Economic Times report. Sikka spoke about some of the big bets Infosys has made, including what the company internally calls '<keyword id="2911637" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Zero-Distance">Zero Distance</keyword>'. He said the company started the Zero Distance initiative as part of an internal push to infuse innovation into each of the company's existing client projects. The company currently has about 23,000 projects with customers. Twelve months after being named as the CEO of Infosys, Sikka said in the internal company blog on Sunday: "I write this onboard a beautiful <keyword id="71561" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lufthansa">Lufthansa</keyword> <keyword id="999178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Boeing-747-8">Boeing 747-8</keyword>, the latest incarnation of the magnificent plane that was born around the same time I was, and has evolved through these decades in a timeless manner. It makes me even more proud that a brilliant team of Infoscions helped design many key parts and systems of this amazing machine." He further said the company had made a five-point template internally to improve the quality of each customer project. Infosys has even formed Zero Distance groups on <keyword id="726756" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Yammer">Yammer</keyword> and on the company's intranet Sparsh. 

	"Then we rolled this template out to a 1000 projects and their leadership, and a few weeks later, to all our projects....Projects covering more than 68k delivery colleagues at Infosys, that is more than 70% of our delivery strength, are participating and more than 500 client conversations relating to the improvements and innovations in their projects have already happened," he said.
 

	The Infosys CEO said the company had so far trained over 35,000 employees in design thinking, of which more than 21,000 have been trained from the delivery organisation. The company has also conducted over three dozen design thinking workshops till date.
 The company has rolled out its Infosys Information Platform (IIP) to more than 100 customer projects. It is the company's flagship big data analytics platform and the platform's development is being overseen by platforms head <keyword id="1187683" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Abdul-Razack">Abdul Razack</keyword>, a key Sikka lieutenant. "Under Abdul and Samson's leadership, our work in IAP is already resulting in substantial savings due to automation in the routine, mechanizable areas like parts of infrastructure management. And we now have more than 100 commercial IIP engagements, including many that have already produced breakthrough results. <keyword id="2728667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Panaya">Panaya</keyword>'s adoption is underway, and is picking up steam. We've crossed 12 Panaya wins done by the Infosys CSG teams," Sikka said. 

	Meanwhile, Sikka paid tribute to Kamath and said new chairman R Seshasayee had "become a mentor" to him. "(KV Kamath) is an amazing man, a natural leader, a unique combination of spirituality and practicality, of great vision and dreams, and great execution and discipline. As happy as I am to see him lead this great new institution for humanity, I will really miss him," he said.
