The <keyword id="6355100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword> has conducted exercises with Russia and 'Quad' countries - an informal security forum comprising India, the US, Japan and Australia - in a message to China on getting a wider footprint in the Indo-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific region is seen from the west coast of India to the US. The Indian Navy carried out a three-day bilateral maritime exercise with Japan in the north Arabian Sea from September 26, 2020 to September 28, 2020. It was the fourth edition of India-Japan Maritime bilateral exercise JIMEX, which is conducted biennially. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in October 2018 off Visakhapatnam in India. Naval cooperation between India and Japan has increased in scope and complexity over the years. Advanced level of operations and exercises took place during three days. It is indicative of the continued upswing in Indo-Japanese defence relations and continued efforts by both governments to work closely for a more secure, open and inclusive global commons, in accordance with international regulations. The helicopter carrier of Japan JS Kaga took part in the recent exercise. The Kaga and its sister ship the Izumo are being converted into aircraft carriers that will carry US-built maritime planes, the F35-B. India, Japan, China and South Korea are the countries now involved in what is seen in strategic circles as the Asian carrier race. The Australian Navy and Indian Navy carried out passage exercise in the East Indian Ocean Region from September 23 to September 24. The exercise involved participation of HMAS Hobart from the Australian side and Indian naval ships Sahyadri and Karmuk. In addition, an Indian maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters from both sides carried out coordinated exercise. The exercise, aimed at enhancing interoperability, improving understanding and imbibing best practices from each other, involved advanced surface and anti-air exercises including weapon firings, seamanship exercises, naval manoeuvres and cross deck flying operations. To boost mutual confidence and cooperation, a bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Navy took place in the Bay of Bengal on between September 4 and September 5. "The exercise was aimed at imbibing best practices between the two navies," Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal told IANS. He also said that the exercise helped to further boost mutual confidence and cooperation between the two Navies and would reinforce the longstanding bond of friendship between the two countries. The exercise is known as 'Indra Navy' and is the 11th edition. It is a biennial bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Russian Navy. Indian Navy units undertook Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with units of US Navy - Nimitz Carrier Strike Group as they transited through Indian Ocean Region on July 20. The mega deal was approved during the DAC meet on Friday led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The mega submarine project for building of indigenous submarines for the <keyword id="42407" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navy">Navy</keyword> got the final clearance wherein two Indian companies that can work in collaboration with a foreign manufacturer. The RFP has been issued to Mazagon Docks (MDL) and private company <keyword id="45475" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Larsen-Toubro">Larsen &amp; Toubro</keyword>. Under the Project 75I, the submarines for the Indian Navy are going to be constructed in India and will be through ToT by the OEMs. This project is under the strategic partnership model which was adopted in an effort to ensure building capacity in the Indian industry. The idea is that this is going to help in the local manufacturing of major military platforms. The project received a clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) way back in 1999 and Acceptance of Necessity granted in 2007. The strategic partnership model aims at promoting India as a manufacturing hub for defence equipment, in addition to establishing an industrial and R&amp;D eco-system capable of meeting the future requirements of the Armed Forces besides giving boost to exports. The Indian Navy currently has 12 submarines. Defence Ministry clears Indian Navy's ₹45000 crore deal to procure six submarines

Cochin Shipyard bags Rs 313cr deal to upgrade Indian Navy warship

Generally, such deals are awarded to multinational companies but the Indian Navy chose to stay with a domestic vendor. The multi-year contract comprises the design, construction and maintenance of a high capacity <keyword id="527695" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-network">digital network</keyword>, connecting all Indian naval sites and India-administered islands as well as establishing secure data centres. It also includes the creation of a software-defined data delivery network for the Indian Navy, stated the company in a press note. According to media reports, this will be the first time when such a robust security network is being built on a large scale in India. The network will allow the Indian Navy to get benefits of network virtualisation, big data analytics and easy monitoring of the posts situated at a distance. The company had already received an advance purchase order in February 2018. Furthermore, it promised to provide advanced security solution embedded with real-time situational awareness to help navy hasten its decision making. Sterlite Tech is already working with the state-owned BSNL and the Defence Ministry to design a network for spectrum program (NFS). Moreover, it has previously worked on a project involving the creation of intrusion proof smarter networks. Sterlite Technologies strikes ₹35 billion deal to build digital network for Indian Navy

Bengaluru, The <keyword id="6355100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword> has received three "made in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>" <keyword id="6706498" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Advanced-Light-Helicopters">advanced light helicopters</keyword>, customised for coastal security, from the <keyword id="86569" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Aeronautics-Limited">Hindustan Aeronautics Limited</keyword> (HAL) on Friday. The Mark-III Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) is meant for coastal security. Out of the 16 Mk-III helicopters, HAL delivered three to Indian <keyword id="42407" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navy">Navy</keyword> Chief Admiral Karambir Singh at Aero India. The helicopters are fully loaded multi mission helicopter is fitted with an array of advanced sensors. This will augment the Navy's responsibility for coastal security placed on it by the government after 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed the lives of 166 people and left 300 others injured. The helicopter features a full glass cockpit with HAL's Integrated Architecture Display System (IADS), more powerful "Shakti" (Safran Ardiden 1H1) <keyword id="240487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engines">engines</keyword>, and a host of new systems. The Indian Navy had ordered 16 Mk-III to supplement its ageing and depleting fleet of Alouettes (Chetaks) - from HAL. These helicopters have come up with latest-generation avionics and role equipment. It is primarily meant for use in a shore-based role. The Mk-III ALH are also equipped with an indigenous low frequency dunking sonar (LFDS) developed by Kochi-based Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory. Indian Navy receives three Advanced Light Helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

Amid heightened tensions in the Gulf between the US and Iran, Indian Navy launches Op Sankalp to safeguard Indian vessels

India, now, is in no mood to shy away from disclosing its plan on having a nuclear fleet as a top Naval officer informed that work on a new class of such vessels was underway. The Federal Government had given a nod for the nuclear fleet two months ago. 
 "The government has given approvals for six new SSNs (<keyword id="2950328" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="nuclear-attack-submarines">nuclear attack submarines</keyword>) earlier this year. We have started work but still are at the pen to paper stage," Vice Admiral P Murugesan, the Vice Chief of Naval staff said in response to a question by Economic Times. 
 
Exuding confidence that the Navy's submarine design bureau would come out with a new class of vessels in less than 15 years, Murugesan said that things take time. 
 
“But we will be able to improve on the timelines that the pioneers (nations) have set which typically took over 15 years for such a project," said the top official. 
 
Presently, Navy has 48 ships under construction at various shipyards across the nation and is on course to become a 200 ship navy by 2027. 
 
Navy, right now, operates 137 combatants with new ships being added at a rate of four to five a year. 
 
The financial daily reported that in a bid to boost its underwater capabilities, the Navy was planning to build at least six SSNs in India, with financial sanction given in February for the project that could cost upwards of Rs 90,000 crore. 
 
ET reported that India was also in final talks with Russia to lease a new nuclear attack submarine. Sources told ET that the Navy was looking for a newly built, customised submarine under the Chakra 3 project.

India opens up about its nuclear fleet, creating a 200-ship Navy

The platform will enable the <keyword id="6355100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian navy</keyword> to move from sea denial to sea control. 
 The new aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya will be commissioned into the <keyword id="1938977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Navy-in-Russia">Indian Navy in Russia</keyword> by <keyword id="6366153" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Defence-Minister">defence minister</keyword> AK Anthony on November 16. 
 Displacing 44,500 tonnes, it is the largest ship ever owned by the Indian <keyword id="42407" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Navy">navy</keyword>. It has a ski jump for take-offs and arrested landing by wires that latch onto the aircraft on the deck. The ship carries about 8,000 tonnes of fuel and can sail up to 14,000 km at one go. 
 With this ship, the Indian navy gets <keyword id="819291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="one-step">one step</keyword> closer to its dream of operating a blue-water fleet. This follows the classical doctrine of maritime power or sea control – first articulated by <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="captain">Captain</keyword> Alfred Thayer Mahan in the 1890s. 
 
Only navies with aircraft carriers and nuclear-powered submarines can claim sea control, and India has both. In contrast, navies without such capacity can, at best, exercise sea denial. It is very simple to comprehend – it is essentially offence versus defence. 
 
Indian Navy now has an air force of its own. 
The ship has a balance of 30 fighters including 20 brand new MiG-29Ks. It also has 10 Kamov 28 and 31 early-warning and anti-submarine helicopters. This gives the Indian navy a massive outreach. The MiG-29K is an all-weather, carrier-based multi-role fighter aircraft with a range of 2,000 km. It can fly at up to 2,200 km per hour. The MiG-29K carries a 30 mm cannon and advanced laser-guided and electro-optical bombs, as well as anti-ship and air-to-air missiles. Similarly, the Kamov is the world’s best anti-submarine and early-warning helicopter. 
 
No smooth sailing for this ship – the seas were rough all along. The ship was originally called Admiral Gorshkov and served the <keyword id="46942" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Russian-Navy">Russian navy</keyword> not as an aircraft carrier but as a nuclear missile cruiser. It was retired when the erstwhile USSR collapsed and <keyword id="6358826" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword> could not afford it. But that was a long time ago. 
 
To transform a missile cruiser into an aircraft carrier has never been done before. From removing its missiles and widening its deck to adding a ski jump for shorter take-off – this ship has seen quite a transformation. 
 
But that has also transformed the cost. It was originally billed at $750 million, but the final cost was over $2.3 billion. It is also five years late in getting operational. To make things worse, there was a fire after a boiler burst and wrecked a large part of the ship, which had to be remade piece by piece. 
 
However, almost everything on this ship, save the hull, is brand new. The entire wiring was changed and the deck was widened with new angles. And that’s no mean achievement. 
 
The ship sailed continuously for 100 days to prove itself and this happened after being docked for, hold your breath, 17 years! 
 
One of the MiG-29Ks also crashed while testing. Russians said it was pilot’s error and India took their word for it. 
 
It will take 4 more years for this aircraft carrier to be fully operational. Systems for its air defence are not yet on board. Incidentally, these defend the aircraft from cruise missiles. So wait till 2017 for it to do its job properly. 
 
That’s not unusual as no one gives you an aircraft carrier off the shelf. India’s special relationship with Russia counts and this aircraft carrier will serve the navy for at least 25 years. 
 The experience gained at the Sevmash shipyard while this ship was built will be of enormous help to India’s own aircraft carrier programme. Also INS Vikrant, an <keyword id="6500558" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indigenous">indigenous</keyword> carrier, was launched on August 12 this year. Therefore, within 5 years, India hopes to operate two carrier battle groups. 
 
Meanwhile, China has got its own second hand carrier from <keyword id="6355101" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ukraine">Ukraine</keyword>. 
China has recently made a giant sea stride. It has completely refurbished a second hand carrier that displaces 65,000 tonnes and has a ski jump, just like the Indian carrier. Originally, this aircraft carrier was to be sold as junk by Ukraine, but China finally bought it. Its air wing includes Chinese J15 carrier-borne fighter bombers and anti-submarine helicopters such as the Kamovs that are also used by the Indian navy. 
 
However, India has an advantage over China. Having an aircraft carrier and making it a fully operational battle group are two different things. India has operated battle groups for over 40 years now and has deployed them in real wars. A fully operational Chinese aircraft carrier battle group is at least 10 years into the future.

New Delhi, Jan 13 () State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has developed a special class diesel conforming to NATO grade for use in ships and vessels of Indian Navy.
 Vice Admiral G S Pabby launched the Upgraded High Flash High-Speed Diesel (HFHSD- IN 512) in presence of IOC Director (R&amp;D) SSV Ramakumar and IOC Director (Refineries) S M Vaidya, a company statement said here.
 "IOC has always endeavoured to supply world-class fuels to Indian Defence Forces. Moving ahead in this direction IOC has developed and upgraded the specifications of HFHSD- IN 512 fuel required for Indian Naval ships. The upgraded fuel now exceeds the MIL DTL 16844M specifications which is considered benchmark standard across in the world," it said.
 The fuel possesses the best rheological and detergent characteristics validated against most stringent military specifications. It also has lesser environmental impact due to low Sulphur content and would result in the better performance of engines.
 "This fuel will facilitate the Indian Navy to enhance its global footprint and will allow India to fuel the vessels of friendly foreign countries at places where fuel conforming to NATO grade is supplied," the statement said.
 Speaking on the occasion, Pabby called the launch of the upgraded diesel a historic day in the partnership of the Indian Navy and IOC.
 He appreciated IOC's efforts towards research and rigorous testing for the formulation of the upgraded product along with the upgradation of downstream infrastructure for ensuring delivery of the product at Naval jetties.
 "The changeover to the upgraded HFHSD- IN 512 has been done without any additional cost to the Indian Navy by IOC," he said.
 Ramakumar said the IOC's R&amp;D department was formed way back in 1972 to attain self-sufficiency through indigenization of petroleum products required for defence forces.
 IOC-Indian Navy partnership panning past several decades has resulted in the development of high-performance products as and when new vessels/ equipments are inducted, he said reiterating R&amp;D Centre's commitment to continually bring forth products and processes to meet the future needs sustainably and address country's requirement of reducing import dependency.
 Vaidya said IOC has always been guided by country-before-business philosophy and the company has strongly supported the energy needs of the Indian Defence Forces in both peace and war times.

 He said IOC refineries were the first ones to make available 0.5 per cent Sulphur Marpol Fuel Oil that will reduce stack emissions from the ships.
 Indian Navy had wanted that fuel supplied to them to be upgraded to conform to MIL DTL 16884 M specifications. This would facilitate the Indian Navy to have a global footprint and ensure inter-operability with all leading foreign navies.
 IOC's R&amp;D Department conducted an in-depth fuel characterization study as per the NATO grade MIL specifications and further incorporated the additional parameters suggested by the Indian Navy.
 Accordingly, IOC prepared a specification comprises of 22 parameters against the 20 parameters of MIL specs for the supply of diesel exclusively for Indian Navy. The customized HFHSD- IN 512 has the unique combination of low pour and Cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and High Flash Point. It has the highest cetane number amongst all marine diesel fuel and exceeds MIL-DTL 16884M specifications in terms of Fuel Hygiene parameters and other critical properties, the statement added. The stealth guided missile destroyer <keyword id="50591" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mormugao" source="Orion">Mormugao</keyword>, the second of the four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers, was commissioned into the Indian <keyword id="42407" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="navy" source="Orion">Navy</keyword> on Sunday. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Mumbai, Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> said <keyword id="3659561" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ins-mormugao" source="Orion">INS Mormugao</keyword> is evidence of India's excellence in warship design and development. INS Mormugao is among the most powerful Indigenous warships, Singh said. This is the most technologically advanced warship, he added. Singh said the warship's commissioning will boost India's maritime power. Indian economy is among the top five economies in the world, and according to experts, will be among the top three in 2027, Singh said. The Navy chief said the commissioning of the warship, on the eve of the Goa Liberation Day, is indicative of the large strides taken in warship design and building capability over the last decade. INS Mormugao is the second of the four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers of 'Project 15B', indigenously designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. Named after the historic port city of Goa, Mormugao coincidentally undertook first sea trial on December 19, 2021, when Goa celebrated 60 years of liberation from the Portuguese rule. INS Mormugao is 163 metres long and 17 metres wide. It has a displacement of 7,400 tonnes and a maximum speed of 30 knots (55 kmph). The warship is packed with sophisticated state of the art weapons and sensors such as surface to surface missile and surface to air missiles. It is fitted with a modern surveillance radar which provides target data to the gunnery weapon systems on board.
