“This is a meeting of dreams of one third of the humanity under one roof,” Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> spoke at the biggest gathering of foreign dignitaries in New Delhi since 1983 Non-Aligned Summit as the 3rd India-Africa Forum Summit kicked off at Indira Gandhi stadium on Thursday. 
 
During his inaugural address, he outlined areas of emerging partnership between the two countries and specific areas of cooperation and roadmap to achieve it. We bring you key highlights from PM Narendra Modi’s speech at the ceremony: 
 
India and Africa to stand together in pitching for UN reforms 
 PM called for unity for pushing reforms in international institutions like the UN Security Council. He said “This is a world of free nations and awakened aspirations. Our institutions cannot be representative of our world if they do not give voice to Africa, with more than a quarter of UN members, or the world’s largest democracy with one-sixth of humanity. That is why India and Africa must speak in one voice for reforms of the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword>, including its Security Council.” Zimbabwe President <keyword id="6363383" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Robert-Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</keyword> was seen taking a similar stand as Modi. Stating that African nations have been treated as “underdogs” and looked down upon as “dwarfs” by the permanent members of UNSC, Mugabe said reform of the global body should be carried out in such a way that it becomes “United Equal Nations”. “We are saying let us amend charter of UN. There should be two seats for African countries in the reformed Security Council and one for India. The South African President <keyword id="58149" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jacob-Zuma">Jacob Zuma</keyword>, who is part of G-4 grouping, also strongly backed India’s candidature for the UNSC seat. 
 
 Efforts on combating Climate change 
 
"Effort should be that snow on Kilimanjaro does not disappear, the glacier that feeds the River Ganga does not retreat," Modi aspired to light up lives of people and power their future. He called for cooperation between India and Africa to combat climate change even as he said he wants to see "a genuine global public partnership that makes clean energy affordable, provides finance and technology to developing countries to access it; and the means to adapt to the impact of climate change." 
 
Technology and innovation: 
 
Citing how the use of mobile and digital technology like mobile banking of M-Pesa, the healthcare innovation of MedAfrica, the agriculture innovation of AgriManagr and Kilimo Salama are transforming lives in Africa, Modi said technology will be a strong foundation of the partnership between India and Africa considering Africa has now joined the global mainstream of innovation. 
 
India to extend a new $10 billion line of credit 
 
In addition to the ongoing credit programme, Modi promised to offer concessional credit of $10 billion over the next five years in a bid to add strength to the partnership. At the India-Africa Forum Summit, he outlined India’s vision to assist Africa with infrastructure building from “Cairo to Cape Town, Marrakesh to Mombassa”. He also pledged an assistance of $600 million to the continent, which includes 50,000 scholarships for African students in India, an India-Africa Development Fund of $100 million and an India-Africa Health Fund of $10 million. India will also support the expansion of the Pan Africa E-Network and institutions of skilling, training and learning across Africa. 
 
Joint efforts for a solar future and global trading regime 
Modi said: "Our goal is to make solar energy an integral part of our life and reach it to the most unconnected villages and communities." India has proposed to launch in Paris on 30 November at the time of COP-21 meeting. He invited African nations to join an alliance of solar-rich countries. He also asked Africa to seek a global trading regime along with India that serves the development goals and improves the trade prospects of both the regions. 
 
India to help Africa in developing agriculture: 
 
"Africa has 60 percent of the world's arable land reserves and just 10 percent of the global output. India will help to develop Africa's agriculture sector that can drive the continent's march to prosperity and also support global food security,” Modi said, while adding that India has noted Africa’s strong measures that are radically improving healthcare, education and agriculture. “Primary school enrollment in Africa now exceeds 90 percent," he said.

6 reasons why the Indo-Africa Forum Summit is more
important than you would imagine

When <keyword id="6355532" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahatma-Gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</keyword> started his career at the age of 24 as a barrister for supporting Indian traders in Pretoria in South Africa in 1893–which was the launching pad for his transformation as a civil rights activists upholding the cause of Indians in South Africa and later as a political leader in India leading the country to victory and freedom in its struggle against centuries-old colonial rule—he would not have thought of a scenario where Indian and the whole of Africa emerging as close trading partners. 
 Exactly 122 years after Gandhiji landed in the African continent, India is on the threshold of helping the continent shrug off its colonial past (similar to how it emerged from the shadow of British rule to be the fastest growing <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> in the world) and emerging the biggest <keyword id="469482" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="trading-partner">trading partner</keyword> of Africa. 
 In fact, the shared colonial past and the strong desire and commitment to emerge as world leaders in trade create a level-paying field for <keyword id="761357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-and-Africa">India and Africa</keyword> to formulating mutually beneficial and long-lasting business ties. 
 The unstoppable momentum gained by formerly colonised and downtrodden regions as possible future trade leaders is what makes the third <keyword id="955923" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Africa-Forum-Summit">India-Africa Forum Summit</keyword> (the largest such summits even hosted by India where 40 heads of states from the African continent are attending) being held in New Delhi from October 26 to 29—seven years after the first summit was held in 2008—really significant. 
 Another key reason why this summit is important, especially for India, is the slowdown seen by China—its bigger rival from Asia—and the subsequent opportunity that offers for the country to prove itself as an alternative to the Chinese hegemony as the preferred investment destination and trade partner. In fact, Africa’s status as the world's fastest-growing population and a vast fountain natural resources is what prompting the <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government to position India as a better alternative as it seeks to challenge the dominance of China as Africa‘s business ally. 
 
India's appeal for Africa has surged over the past year due to its higher economic growth trajectory and international standing earned by Modi. With China no longer flourishing, India looks more attractive to Africans who are trying to cope with a lull in mineral exports to China and growing concerns about China's ability to keep investing in Africa. 
 However, though India has overtaken China in terms of the pace of economic growth, its economy is still one-fifth the size and it lacks the financial heft to challenge Beijing in a tuff contest for the African market—while trade between India and Africa grew from $ 2 billion 15 years ago to $72 billion in 2014, trade between China and Africa stands at a mammoth $200 billion—more than the <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> of the 30 smallest African economies combined. 
 Therefore, while acknowledging that it may not be easy to take China head on in the race to garner a larger pie of the growing African market, the Modi government wants to offer Africa a ‘choice’ by aggressively promoting its ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ campaign. 
 
Also, as opposed to China’s exploitative approach wherein the world's No.2 economy has been sucking oil, coal and metals from Africa over the years to feed its industrial machine, India seeks a less transactional alliance and aims position itself as an ideal partner—leveraging Africa’s needs and India’s strengths—for overall development for the two regions that account for a third of the world's people, but seven in 10 of those living in poverty. 
 
As a massive gathering of leaders from a rising continent debate on possible trade options with the largest democracy in the world, the event has not only proved to be landmark event in the history of relations among emerging powers, but also confirmed an elevated stature for India as a an emerging world leader. 
 
The fact that India and Africa are emerging as decisive voices in the stage of world trade is effectively captured by the summit logo which features the African and Indian lions—the image points to the confidence and optimism that two landmasses that were once conjoined but now separated through geological drift are enjoying in their quest to realise their true potential. The imagery also encapsulates the courage and boldness of tow emerging lions on the prowl for larger trade and bilateral opportunities. 
 
The biggest gathering of foreign dignitaries in the country since 1983 with some 1,000 delegates, the India-Africa Forum Summit also envisages to transcend usual trade talks and address issues of common concerns such as climate change and international terrorism. 
 
Though much later after China, European Union and Japan held similar events, the meet gives Modi a chance to lead India to nullify its peers’ first-mover advantage and emerge Africa’s largest trade ally and in the process cement its growing status as one of the top global economic powerhouses.

How India is challenging China's dominance in Africa

A massive <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> shook <keyword id="6358777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-Delhi">New Delhi</keyword>, other parts of North India, <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> and Afghanistan on Monday. 
 
Strong tremors were felt in New Delhi and people were seen running out of the buildings.

The quake was 196 km (120 miles) deep and centred 82 km southeast of Feyzabad in a remote area of Afghanistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range. At least 23 people have been reported dead and more than 140 injured. The quake measured 7.7 on the Richter scale with an epicenter at <keyword id="1140795" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hindukush">Hindukush</keyword> region, the Central government said. Powerful tremors were also felt across Pakistan’s capital Islamabad. 
 
Tremors were also felt in Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh in Punjab and Jaipur.
