<ul><li>Two in every three users are expected to have a mobile phone by 2023, while one in two users will have a smartphone.</li><li>Broadband users are expected to reach 700 million even as 4G users are expected to double in the same period.</li><li>5G could remain relatively less popular even in 2023, with a share of under 5% of the market.</li></ul>Internet and mobile usage in India is all set to cross the 900-million mark by 2023, with nearly two-thirds of the population estimated to have internet access and a mobile device. However, less than 5% of the population will upgrade to 5G by 2023, suggesting that even three years from now, 5G adoption will be slow. However, according to a Cisco <a href="https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/solutions/collateral/executive-perspectives/annual-internet-report/white-paper-c11-741490.html">report</a>, the growth rate of devices connected to the internet will be seven times that of the population growth rate by 2023. The forecast states that India will have 2.1 billion connected devices by 2023, increasing from 1.5 billion in 2018. This means that at an estimated population of 1.42 billion by 2023, there will be three connected devices for every two individuals. Smartphones could cover 55% of the population The report also claims that smartphones could be used by 55% of the total population by 2023, growing from 610.9 million in 2018 at a rate of 5% compounded annually. Interestingly, internet connected devices are estimated to grow at 7% - higher than both smartphones as well as mobile connected devices. This suggests that Indians could continue to buy non-portable devices which are connected to the internet – this could include things like TVs and other home appliances. Half of the population to have a broadband connection Despite the pan-India availability of 4G services, the report says that Indians could increasingly opt for a wired or wireless broadband connection. Estimates in the report suggest that nearly half of the Indian population could have a broadband connection by 2023, growing from 359.8 million in 2018 to 697.4 million in 2023 at a rate of 14.2%. 4G will continue to dominate, 5G share to be under 5% Although 5G trials in India are expected to start some time later this year, the next-gen technology is expected to remain a rarity with a share of under 5%. 4G is expected to dominate with a share of 53.1%, while 3G and other connections will be at 38.7% of the total mobile connections. Mobile application downloads to register explosive growth App downloads in India are expected to register explosive growth over the next three years. The report suggests that there will be 46.2 billion apps downloaded by 2023, more than doubling from 20.7 billion in 2018. Of these, business app downloads are expected to register the highest growth at 28.3%, with total downloads reaching 17.9 billion. Social media and messaging app downloads are expected to reach 17.8 billion, while mobile game downloads are expected to reach 10.5 billion. India to have 966 million mobile users by 2023 but less than 5% will have 5G: report

According to a recent study done by <keyword id="104695" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Qualcomm">Qualcomm</keyword>, India has emerged as one of the biggest economies, which has an untapped market of female <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smartphone">smartphone</keyword> users. India is the second largest developing market in the world for mobile broadband devices. Much of it comprises of men, who use a smartphone. The study states only 30% of the working <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> interviewed were using a smartphones. 
 
Women in India are still using older and outdated techniques of communication according to the study. More than 57% of Indian women purchased a mobile phone more than 2 years ago. This leaves a large gap to be covered that mobile phone vendors can quickly grab by producing women centric smartphones and services. 
 Qualcomm <keyword id="44451" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="report">report</keyword> also says “Among feature phones owners, 36% report they have no plans to buy a smartphone. These women view smartphones as either too complicated (44%) or too expensive (39%). However, many women indicate they would be more inclined to purchase a smartphone if they received lessons on how to use it”. 
 Now the onus of carrying out the task to teach the women and bringing female friendly phones lies on the retailers as well as the makers. DOT should also take note of <keyword id="818773" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-situation">the situation</keyword> and promote the smartphone culture within Indian working women. Social advertisements, banking and financial investments, and Food and beverages were the highest contributors. The report was presented by Sunil Lulla, CEO, BARC India and Dolly Jha, Country Leader, Nielsen Global Media, South Asia on a video conferencing platform called Zoom. On March 24, 2020, with the Prime Minister announcing a total lockdown in the country, people are slowly coming to terms with the new normal. It started with many states enforcing the lock-down, partially and fully, and many places of work enforcing work from home (WFH). Faced with the predicament of not being able to move out of their homes, people are creating new ways of spending time productively. Even on smartphone usage, the increase in driven NCCS A (+7.7%) and 35-44 year olds (+10.7%).</li><li> People staying at home means watching TV throughout the day and hence the growth in TV viewing is coming during Non-Prime Time slots (8am – 5 pm).</li><li>The need for continuous updates expectedly has led to a huge increase in news consumption on Television (57% increase in Impressions), while spending more time as a family together could be leading to the Movies genre and the Kids genre also showing significant increases. </li><li>This behaviour is seen in digital consumption as well with News and Gaming showing huge increases. News apps saw 8% more users per week with an increase of 17% in time spent/user/week. This growth was led by non-English News apps (+87%). Gaming apps saw an increase of 2% in users/week and with a 11% increase in time spent/user/week.</li><li>With a lot of uncertainty around what is happening, people have increased their time spent on Chatting (+23%) and Social Networking (+25%) apps. Unlocking 2.0: Cab aggregators, shopping apps and travel planners see early signs of revival

India is expected to overtake the US as the second-largest <keyword id="390059" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-market">smartphone market</keyword> next year with robust annual growth, says a Morgan Stanley research report. According to the report on global technology and telecom, the country's <keyword id="28168" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphone">smartphone</keyword> market will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23 per cent through 2018 and would account for 30 per cent of the global growth during the period. 

	"We expect India to overtake the US next year as the second-largest smartphone market by units. India will grow nearly five times faster than the world's largest smartphone market China, where growth has decelerated," the report said.
 

	It added, "We estimate a 23 per cent CAGR in units in India, compared with 5 per cent over the same period in China. By 2018, we estimate 192 million smartphones will be shipped to India, or 11 per cent of global units."
 

	Morgan Stanley said there are only 225 million smartphone subscribers in the country, accounting for 18 per cent of the total population.
 

	"The improvement in demographics, as measured by declining age dependency, has been one of the most important factors supporting higher potential growth in India... We expect consumption to maintain a relatively high growth rate, driven by an increase in per-capita income growth and an emerging middle class," it noted.
 

	On consumption of data, the report said the country is on the cusp of significant growth in data traffic driven by rising data users as well as growing data usage per user.
 

	"We expect India's internet penetration to reach 50 per cent by 2018, up from 26 per cent last year, driven by rising smartphone availability and affordability, online content and changing user behavior," it said.
 The global consultancy estimates <keyword id="1948108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-smartphones">4G smartphones</keyword> will account for 75 per cent of 170 million shipments by the next year, which currently has less than 1 per cent subscriber penetration in the country. The report, which is based on 2,600 <keyword id="3334600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-smartphone-buyers">urban smartphone buyers</keyword>, said the respondents paid an average of Rs 8,500 for their smartphones and plan to spend 40 per cent more on their next phone.

Finance apps in particular witnessed over 1 billion downloads in India last year which is an increase from 8.9 million in 2020. This helped fuel the 28% YoY increase in overall finance app downloads globally to 5.9 billion. App Annie also highlighted breakthrough job searching apps in 2021 which was Apna for India with 17.7 million downloads. Overall, Instagram was the most downloaded app in India in 2021. The highest consumer spending app was Hotstar, while WhatsApp had the highest number of monthly active users. 2021 was also a healthy year for the app store ecosystem and revenue according to the App Annie report. A total of two million new apps and games were released in 2021 for iOS and Android devices. Google Play Store accounted for 77% of the total apps and games. In terms of revenue, over 230 apps and games surpassed $100 million in annual consumer spend, and 13 of them even crossed $1 billion. Week 17 sees a 10% increase in the count of brands advertising on Television: BARC India & Nielsen

India pipped the US and became world's second largest smartphone market as the country crossed 220 million in active unique smartphone users in 2015. 
 This means <keyword id="1732964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartphone-shipments-in-India">smartphone shipments in India</keyword> have grown considerably. 
 
"This speaks volumes for the scale India market provides for any player in the mobile connected ecosystem. India still has a long way to go as the smartphone penetration of the total potential population is still below 30%," said Tarun Pathak, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. 
 
Counterpoint Research stated that smartphone shipments in India grew 15% annually in the October-December quarter. 
 The two companies that benefitted from the demand were <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>. 
 
Apple crossed 2 million units for the first time in a calendar year led by a strong fourth quarter. 
 
Samsung dominated the mobile phone and smartphone market during the quarter with market shares of 23.6% and 28.6%, respectively. 
"We are witnessing a transition period for the industry from mass to niche, featurephones to smartphones, 2G and 3G to 4G, 'offline only' to hybrid, and 'imports only' to domestic manufacturing with imports," said Faisal Kawoosa, Lead Telecoms Analyst, CMR.

India is now world's second largest smartphone market! This is just the tip of the iceberg

<ul><li>The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, which is one of the primary contenders in the Indian market tripled its profits in FY 18 to $276 million. </li><li>The cost of sales for smartphones increased by 45.4%, the company said. </li><li>One of the reasons for the increase was the appreciation of the US dollar against the Indian rupee. </li><li>Even so, the share of revenue from overseas in Xiaomi’s total revenue increased from 28% in FY17 to 40% in FY18. </li></ul>The impact of the US-China trade war on Apple and Samsung is well known but Xiaomi, which has been leading in the Indian market for six consecutive quarters, seems to have felt the brunt as well. While the company tripled its net profits to $276 million for FY18, its cost of sales — basically how much it costs to build a device — for smartphones increased by 45.4%, the company said in its regulatory filings. According to its <a href="https://i01.appmifile.com/webfile/globalweb/company/ir/announcement_us/ANNUAL_RESULTS_2018.pdf">annual report</a>, the increase was primarily due to the rise in sales of smartphones and the appreciation of the US dollar against the Indian rupee.

 But despite the increase in costs, Xiaomi singled out overseas markets for their impact. Revenue from markets outside of China grew by 118.1, increasing their share in Xiaomi’s total revenue from 28% to 40% between 2018 and 2017.

The software and retail part of its business model have their own profit margins from users consuming app services and in-app ads on Xiaomi devices. Global currency wars made it more expensive for Xiaomi to sell phones in India

<ul><li>By 2025, 5G networks will carry half of the world’s mobile data traffic — just not in India. </li><li><keyword id="1671940" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-network">5G network</keyword> penetration in India will be at 11% while more developed parts of the world will exceed 50%. </li><li>It’s only in 2019 that the number of 4G subscriptions are expected to exceed 2G subscriptions in India. </li></ul>India’s data usage is growing by the day and for the first time, in 2019, 4G mobile subscriptions as expected to exceed 2G subscriptions.  More than half of North East Asia, Western Europe and North America will be on 5G by 2025, according to Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report. But in India, 5G will only account for 11% of total mobile subscriptions. The Indian region — which also includes Nepal and Bhutan — will be the slowest to adopt 5G, second only to the Middle East and Africa, where 5G penetration forecasted to be at 7%. "The mass-market adoption of advanced use cases fueled by 5G is expected later in India than in other regions," noted the report. Finally on the 4G bandwagon India’s 4G subscriptions are set to increase by 150 million during 2019 and surpass 2G technology. This means that the 4G network will now account for 57% of the mobile subscriptions by the end of the year, hitting the half-way mark for the first time. "As the transformation toward more advanced technologies continues in India, LTE is forecast to represent 80 percent of mobile subscriptions by the end of 2025," noted Ericsson’s report. It’s also a milestone for smartphones. Being more affordable has increased their usage from 48% to 54% over the past year. And, more are anticipated. "A total of 500 million additional smartphone users are expected in India by 2025," according to Ericsson. More smartphone users means more data consumption. Right now, India leads the region when it comes to usage per smartphone. By 2025, Ericsson forecasts are the traffic will triple. "Even if the traffic per existing smartphone user continues to grow significantly over time, the increase in the average traffic per smartphone is expected to moderate as more consumers in India acquire smartphones," noted the report. 5G’s many delays One of the primary reasons for the delay has been the pricing of the spectrum. Vodafone Idea, Airtel and Jio have been locked in a price war, bulking under debt and just got hit with outstanding licence fees — they claim that they can’t afford to buy 5G airwaves at the base price that the government has fixed for auctioning them. According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), India’s prices for the 5G spectrum are much higher than the international average. It’s not just that the airwaves are expensive. Telecom operators claim that revenue generation from 5G will be slow until use cases become more prevalent. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also threw a new wrench in the government’s plans. The agency announced that it needs the premium 26 GHz band — which is ideal for the 5G network — for their own weather satellites. The exports of smartphones from India is expected to cross $1.5 billion (by value) this year -- constituting 98 per cent of the <keyword id="10319571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-mobile-phones">total mobile phones</keyword> exported from the country, a new report said on Monday. A total of 12.8 million mobile phones were exported from India from January to September this year and of these, 10.9 million units were smartphones, according to <keyword id="10319572" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-research-firm-techarc">market research firm techARC</keyword>. Samsung led the overall mobile exports with 11.6 million units, followed by <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> at 0.6 million shipments, in the January-September period. The South Korean giant exported 9.8 million units of smartphones, followed by Xiaomi at 0.6 million and Lava at 0.2 million smartphones. The other smartphone exporters in the top 5 were Vivo and <keyword id="2210217" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="oneplus">OnePlus</keyword>. "Lava has emerged as the 'torchbearer' Indian brand which is not only the lone domestic brand exporting mobiles but also pecks in top 5 brands," the report said. Indian brands are now exporting to extended markets like the US. Seven brands are exporting mobile phones from India to the US. <keyword id="8442396" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-A51">Samsung A51</keyword> is the most exported smartphone from India. "India has been exporting mobiles to destinations like the UAE and neighbouring <keyword id="8470" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword> countries for quite some time. However, 'Make in India' initiative has made India a truly global exporter of mobile phones," said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder and Chief Analyst, techARC. "Today, India is exporting to 24 countries, some of which are further re-exporting, like the UAE, to other markets, making India-made phones available to millions of users," he added. Covid-19 had a severe impact on the exports, with volume sharply falling to 1.2 million in the April-June quarter from 7.4 million in the January-March period. The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme worth around Rs 1.45 lakh crore in favour of 16 electronics companies including 10 mobile handset manufacturers will further strengthen the country's positioning in the global mobile market, according to the report.

Google Gemini app launched in India with support for nine languages

<ul><li><keyword id="1623392" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphone-sales-in-India">Smartphone sales in India</keyword> are expected to decline by more than 20% due to COVID-19, according to a new survey.</li><li>The survey states that total <keyword id="554032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphone-sales">smartphone sales</keyword> in India in 2020 will be nearly 127 million, as opposed to the 162 million projected earlier.</li><li>Over 90% of these smartphones are expected to be in the ₹5,001–₹25,000 price segment.</li></ul>Owing to the Covid-19 lockdowns impacting both supply and demand, India will sell nearly 127 million smartphones this year against the earlier projection of 162 million units which is a 21.6% decrease from sale forecast at the beginning of the year, a new report said on Tuesday. In terms of actual decrease compared to 2019, it will be 12.5% down from 2020 sales of 145 million smartphones, according to market research firm techARC. "The worst period for the smartphone industry in India seems to be over as both the production and sale fulfilment has started. Smartphone brands will endeavour to stay on track, which means there will be less focus on experiments and more on relevancy for the consumers," said Faisal Kawoosa, Founder &amp; Chief Analyst, techARC. The basic and mid-price segments (₹5,001–₹25,000) will make over 92% of the total sales. The entry-level segment (upto ₹5,000) will continue to witness decline while the premium segment (₹50,000 and above) will be least impacted as the propensity to spend will still remain high in that segment, the report said. "Every user would aim to save as much as possible owing to uncertainties around. There will be some shift of demand from upper price segments to lower ones due to this," said Kawoosa. Since the emergence of Covid-19 situation, main original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have quickly responded to the changing market dynamics. The agility in brands is becoming their strength and shall play a vital role in their business continuity going forward, the report mentioned. techARC expects mild impact on the market shares of top five smartphone brands. "Smaller brands will bear the brunt the most. The niche players would also be impacted although mildly," said Kawoosa. For the brands, the only strategy to sustain revenues is to diversify into other categories like "essential electronics", "pandemic electronics" and "safety electronics", among others. Brands have recently introduced hyper-local O2O (online to offline) medium where demand is aggregated online and fulfilled through offline retail network in the catchment area of a potential customer. "This could pick up well and contribute 5-7% of the total sales in coming months as the sales can be fulfilled in less than a day," the report said.
