<p>With <keyword id="6359072" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="oil">oil</keyword> and gas prices relatively flat from a year ago nearly every company's value either fell or flatlined. </p>
<p>Just two of the top-10 companies saw positive growth, and neither were in the U.S.</p>
<p>The combined market capitalization of the PFC Energy top 50 was $3.5 trillion, a slight 0.8% decline from 12 months previously.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Rick Wilking</span></p><p class="caption">Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos</p></div><p></p></div></div>Amazon passed Exxon Mobile in market cap <a href="https://twitter.com/CNBCnow/status/760120554678587396">on Monday</a>, making it the fourth most valuable public company.</p><p>The switch came after Amazon posted its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-earnings-q2-2016-2016-7">fifth straight quarter of profits</a> last week as the oil giant's profits <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-exxon-mobil-profit-tumbles-59-percent-in-second-quarter-2016-7">tumbled</a> 59 percent during the same rough period. </p><p>Now, tech companies are in spots 1-4 at top of the market value rankings. The 4 most valuable public companies are all tech companies

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Nvidia briefly surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company on Friday with a $3.53 trillion valuation.</li><li>Nvidia's rise has been fueled by its AI-enabling GPUs, boosting its market value by $3.1 trillion since the release of ChatGPT.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nvda-stock">Nvidia</a> briefly eclipsed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/AAPL-stock">Apple</a> to become the world's most valuable company on Friday.</p><p>It's the first time Nvidia has been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-market-cap-microsoft-most-valuable-company-ai-2024-6">the world's largest company since mid-June.</a></p><p>Nvidia stock jumped as much as 3% on Friday to an intra-day high of $144.13, catapulting its market valuation to $3.53 trillion. In contrast, Apple traded up less than 1%, giving it a market valuation of $3.52 trillion.</p><p>Nvidia stock has since pared its gains to about 1% and is trading neck-and-neck with Apple's valuation, at $3.52 trillion compared to Apple's $3.53 trillion at 1:24 p.m., according to data from YCharts.</p><p>The massive size of Nvidia is a testament to its quick ascent since OpenAI released its first version of ChatGPT in November 2022.</p><p>Since then, shares of Nvidia, which supplies the technology world with AI-enabling GPU chips, have added $3.1 trillion to their market valuation, with their stock price soaring more than 740%.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-price-prediction-nvda-blackwell-demand-outlook-chips-ai-2024-10">Wall Street believes the gains can continue,</a> with some analysts expecting the stock to eclipse a $4 trillion valuation soon.</p><p>Bank of America analysts raised their Nvidia price target to $190 last week, citing strong upside and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-upside-growth-ai-chips-demand-bofa-2024-10">"generational opportunity" </a>as it grows its lead in the AI space. </p><p>Meanwhile, CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino bumped his price target to $160 as an "AI war" takes place among the major cloud companies.</p><p>"The higher multiple and target reflect our higher conviction that NVDA will post results that exceed our/consensus views in CY 25, as Blackwell ramps. As we previously cited, Blackwell will take greater wallet share from hyperscalers (e.g., greater GPU, CPU, networking, and software revenue) amid an AI war in the cloud," Zino wrote.</p><p>All eyes will be on Nvidia when they report their third-quarter earnings results next month.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Uber</span></p><p class="caption">Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi driving an Uber.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Technology companies continue to be some of the most valuable private companies in the world, according to <a href="https://pitchbook.com/news/articles/the-30-most-valuable-vc-backed-companies-in-the-world">PitchBook's most recent list</a> of the highest valuations of VC-backed companies. </p><p>Uber tops the list as of May 2018, but it's followed closely by its Chinese competitor, DiDi. In fact, there are a total of five ride-hailing companies on the list; Lyft, Indonesian GO-JEK, and Singapore's Grab are also on there.</p><p>Of the 26 tech companies on the list, 12 are based out of the US and 10 are headquartered in China. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/TSLA-Quote">Tesla</a> on Tuesday became the largest automaker in the US by market capitalization. </p><p>The electric-car maker surpassed <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/GM-Quote">General Motors</a> and <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/F-Quote">Ford</a> as its shares rallied above $300 for the first time, giving it a market cap of about $53 billion.</p><p>GM was worth nearly $50 billion. Its shares fell 3% on Monday, its biggest drop in nine months, after the company reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-auto-sales-march-2017-2017-4">March sales</a> that were weaker than analysts expected. Ford also fell. </p><p>However, Tesla jumped 7% on Monday after reporting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-delivers-quarterly-record-of-25000-vehicles-2017-4">record deliveries</a> in the first quarter, up 69% year-over-year to a record 25,000 vehicles. The rally had put the company in <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-ford-stock-price-april-3-2017-4-1001891214">second place ahead of Ford</a>.</p><p><span>But Tesla still has some catching up to do globally; Japan-based Toyota is worth $177 billion, or more than three Teslas.  </span> </p><p>While Tesla's stock rose to new highs, traders increased their bets that the shares would fall. Tesla is now the most valuable car company in America

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Spencer Platt/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Tech companies are continuing to garner major investments from venture capitalists.</p><p>Major tech startups like Uber, Airbnb, and SpaceX are among the most highly valued private companies, <a href="https://pitchbook.com/news/articles/the-25-most-valuable-vc-backed-companies-in-the-us">PitchBook reports</a>. But recent major investments into burgeoning tech startups - including Slack, Instacart, and Stripe - have brought new players into the spotlight. At this point, there are almost too many billion-dollar startups to count.</p><p>Uber's $72 billion valuation solidifies the company's spot at the top. However, the rideshare platform plans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-could-be-valued-at-120-billion-in-ipo-2018-10">to go public next year</a>, so the No. 1 spot will soon be up for grabs.</p><p><strong>Here are the 25 most valuable VC-backed startups in the US:</strong></p>

Apple's market cap was slightly less. </p><p>It's a surprising turn of events as less than two months ago Microsoft's topped out at $887 billion while Apple's reached a peak above $1.12 trillion just one month after becoming the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/apple-stock-price-trillion-dollar-market-cap-us-company-2018-8-1027427055">first US company with a $1 trillion valuation</a>.</p><p>But a lot has happened since then as the stock market suffered through <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-news-sp-500-worst-month-since-financial-crisis-2018-10">Red October</a>, one of its worst months since the financial crisis, with the Nasdaq Composite shedding more than 12%.</p><p>Microsoft has managed to hold up better than other high-flying tech names after its first-quarter results showed that it continues to follow through on the vision of CEO Satya Nadella, who when he took over in 2014 said he wanted to focus on its subscription-based businesses and the cloud. And while the sales growth of its cloud-computing unit, Azure, grew at its slowest pace in at least two years, it was still up 76% annually, remaining the strongest rival to the dominant Amazon Web Services. Microsoft shares are down 8% from their September close.</p><p>But Apple has gotten mauled amid fears of slowing demand for its iPhones. Microsoft dethrones Apple as the most valuable US company

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Apple surpassed Microsoft in market value at the close of trading Wednesday.</li><li>It means that Apple is currently the most valuable publicly traded company. </li><li>Watch Apple trade in real-time <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">here</a>.</li></ul><p>Apple has retaken the crown.</p><p>Apple surpassed Microsoft as the world's most valuable publicly traded company at the close of trading on Wednesday after a hot streak stemming from better-than-expected earnings last week. </p><p>Apple was flat on Wednesday, giving it a market capitalization of $821 billion, ahead of <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/microsoft-dethrones-apple-as-the-most-valuable-us-company-2018-11-1027756092">Microsoft's market value</a> of $813 billion after a 1.1% slide. Both were ahead of Amazon, which had a market value of $805 billion at the close of the markets on Wednesday. </p><p>It's the first time Apple has closed as the most valuable company since December 3, according to Bloomberg data.
