World’s most powerful passport: Singapore reigns supreme with 195 visa-free destinations! Here’s where India ranks

New Delhi [India], May 12 (ANI): India received foreign institutional inflows worth USD 26.6 billion into <keyword id="6354553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate" source="Orion">real estate</keyword> during the six-year period from 2017 to 2022, a three-fold rise from the preceding six-year period, according to Nasdaq-listed investment management company Colliers. <keyword id="396143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investments" source="Orion">Foreign investments</keyword> in India have been on the rise over the last few years as the industry underwent an overhaul, with major structural, policy reforms inducing transparency and ease of business operations, according to Colliers' 'India- High on Investors' Agenda' report. The report delves into the factors that make India a preferred choice for global investors and how it has stepped ahead of other emerging economies. According to the report, foreign investments accounted for a sizeable share of 81 per cent of the total investments in real estate during 2017-22. "The country's investor-friendly FDI policies, increased transparency in deal structures, and higher investment limits through the direct route have encouraged global investors to invest in India's real estate sector," Colliers said. Institutional investments in real estate continued to remain upbeat in January-March 2023 as well, rising by 37 per cent year-on-year at USD 1.7 billion, led by the office sector. "India's favourable demographic indicators, deep digital talent pool, developmental government policies, infrastructure advancements and competitive costs have made it one of the top choices for global enterprises, fueling real estate demand in India. The strong economic and business fundamentals are enhancing institutional investors' sentiments; forging strategic partnerships to expand their portfolios," said Sankey Prasad, Chairman and Managing Director at Colliers India. From the perspective of global and Asia Pacific investors, the Indian property market currently offers attractive pricing, better valuations, and higher yields on assets. At the Asia Pacific level, India has become a preferred investment destination as Indian cities offer higher yields compared to other cities in the region at relatively lower pricing points. Major Indian cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai occupy the second and third positions, respectively, in terms of commercial yield on real estate assets across the region.

The latest <a href="https://unctad.org/en/pages/DIAE/World%20Investment%20Report/WIR-Series.aspx">World Investment report</a> of the United Nations Conference on Trade &amp; Investment (<a href="https://unctad.org/en/Pages/Home.aspx">UNCTAD</a>), an organization that aims at maximizing trade, investment and development opportunities of developing countries. The increase in FDI inflows is being attributed to manufacturing, communication and financial services sectors, which were the top three FDI recipients in India. Growth in cross-border mergers and acquisitions -- from $23 billion in 2017 to $33 billion in 2018 -- was primarily due to retail trade, which includes e-commerce, and telecommunication, said the report. The $16 billion<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/walmart-acquires-flipkart-for-16-bn-worlds-largest-ecommerce-deal/articleshow/64095145.cms"> acquisition </a>of Flipkart by Walmart, and telecommunication deals worth $2 billion involving Vodafone and American Tower, were among the major deals this year. The report also highlighted the changes to India’s FDI policy, which it termed as “restrictive.” In February 2019, India introduced changes to its e-commerce sector where it banned foreign companies to sell their own products in e-commerce marketplace companies like Amazon. Global FDI slowdown Global FDI flows fell by 13% in 2018 from $1.5 billion in 2017 to $1.3 billion in 2018, which is the third consecutive annual decline, according to UNCTAD’s World Investment Report. The contraction was largely precipitated by United States multinational enterprises (MNEs) repatriating earnings from abroad, making use of tax reforms introduced by the country in 2017, designed for that purpose. Developed countries were the worst hit by the earnings repatriation, where flows fell by a quarter to $557 billion-levels last seen in 2004. South Asia surges ahead As global FDI inflows slump down, South Asia witnessed a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/indicators/fdi-flows-to-india-grew-6-in-2018-to-42-bn-un-report/articleshow/69761999.cms?utm_source=ETTopNews&amp;utm_medium=HP&amp;utm_campaign=TN&amp;utm_content=23">growth</a> of 3.5% to $54 billion in FDI inflows. "All subregions in developing Asia are expected to receive higher inflows. Prospects are underpinned by a doubling in value of announced greenfield projects in the region, suggesting continued growth potential for FDI," it said while sounding a note of caution on global uncertainties. It said uncertainties stemming from global trade tensions could weigh on the mood in the region.

He's likely to be seeking to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in India — and to capitalize on bosses' <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-china-relations-reshoring-manufacturing-jobs-made-in-america-2023-10">desire to hedge their bets on China</a> given its strained relationship with the US, economic woes, and how disruptive its strict pandemic lockdowns were to global supply chains."India's population and economic growth numbers are causing a lot of global executives to revisit their India presence and consider scaling up," Richard Rossow, a senior advisor and chair in US-India Policy Studies at the Center for Strategic &amp; International Studies, told Business Insider."Paired with increased concerns about supply chain resilience and security concerns about China, it's a very good time for a hard push to win investments."The United Nations said that India and China both had a population of 1.426 billion in April last year, meaning India is probably now the most populous given its rising birth rate.<h2>Change for the better — mostly</h2>Modi has instigated a raft of major economic reforms since taking office, intended to make India more business-friendly, and boost government revenues by taxing more of the country's vast informal economy.He rolled out a tax on goods and services, simplified bankruptcy laws, lifted FDI restrictions, cut corporate income tax, and ended retrospective taxation.However, not all of Modi's moves spurred growth."Demonetisation was a key economic policy which had negative effects on the economy," Kunal Sen, a director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics, told BI.Sen is the author of several books about India's economy and a professor of development economics at the University of Manchester.He was referring to Modi's sudden declaration in November 2016 that all 500 and 1,000-rupee bills — 86% of Indian currency in circulation — would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-ending-500-and-1000-rupee-bills-to-fight-corruption-2016-11">no longer be accepted as legal tender</a>.The government's goals were to capture undeclared income, get rid of counterfeit currency, broaden the tax base, and bring more activities into the formal economy."The other key economic policy was JAM — the trinity of bank accounts for the poor, mobile numbers and a biometric card. This last economic policy has been revolutionary," Sen said.He was hailing a broader digitization drive under Modi that has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/how-indias-digital-payments-ecosystem-has-evolved-in-the-last-one-year/slidelist/90595832.cms">transformed</a> how Indians bank, invest, pay their taxes, and conduct business.<h2>Prosperity for all</h2>Modi's efforts have helped to usher in a more prosperous era for some Indians, but many have been left behind.Young people are India's beating heart, with about half its population under 25 and almost two-thirds under 35. Matching those hundreds of millions of people with jobs has proven a challenge, with youth unemployment almost tripling from below 6% in 2000 to about 18% in 2019. During that period, the US and Europe slapped sanctions on Russian oil to defund Putin's military machine and punish Moscow for attacking a sovereign nation.Despite that, India purchased an estimated $37 billion of Moscow's oil in 2023 — 13 times the amount it bought annually prior to the conflict. "India's dynamic technology services sector is to IT services what China is to manufacturing. So there is much to cheer, even as the reform agenda seems to never end."
