Moreover, there's a significant likelihood of heatwaves lasting 10-20 days, surpassing the typical duration of 4-8 days. Central and western regions, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha, are anticipated to experience the brunt of these extreme heatwaves. In terms of pre-monsoon rainfall, April is expected to see normal rains, with increased precipitation predicted for May and June in Northwest, Central, North Peninsular, East, and Northeast India. However, coastal areas in both the East and West, as well as West-central India, can expect below-normal rainfall, offering little relief from the sweltering conditions. Heatwaves pose serious risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with health issues, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration. Additionally, extreme heat can strain power grids, transportation, and other infrastructure. To mitigate these risks, proactive measures such as establishing cooling centres, issuing heat advisories, and implementing strategies to reduce urban heat buildup are crucial. Furthermore, this period of intense heat coincides with the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections (April 19th - June 1st), where nearly a billion people are expected to participate. Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasised the need for India to prepare adequately due to its large population and extreme weather conditions. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a <keyword id="6371478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heatwave" source="Orion">heatwave</keyword> advisory for the elections, urging electoral bodies to work with states to prevent heat-related incidents during public gatherings. So for six cases have been detected of which four have already been reported dead and two are under medical care. “It is likely more people will be identified as surveillance activities increase,” the WHO said in its report. This is the 11th outbreak of Ebola reported in the Republic of Congo since the virus was first detected in 1976. For Mbandaka and its surrounding districts, it is the 9th incident between May to July 2018.  Temperature in Rajasthan’s Churu soared to 50 degree Celsius on June 1— the day when monsoon normally hits Southern parts of India. This great mountain range has also been taking blame for the notoriously unpredictable Indian monsoons. Not anymore. Scientists at the <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2019/ocean-activity-control-summer-monsoons-0507">Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)</a> seem to have found that oceans have a role to play in deciding the fate of its unpredictable rains. The <keyword id="12350" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian ocean</keyword> and the mountains working in tandem might be the reason why the Indian monsoon is one of the most intense annual climate events in the world, according to the co-authors of the study, John Marshall and Nicholas Lutsko.

 Hotter with the wind The very same summer heat that warms up the Indian subcontinent also sends warm winds to sweep across the Indian ocean — up and over South Asia. As the winds head North, the water beneath pushes south. These waters, which flow south, transport heat, thereby cooling the ocean. This process creates a bigger difference between the temperature of land and the temperature of the ocean.

 The team of researchers was able to create a model of the Indian monsoon leaving the Himalayas out of the picture altogether — that too on a hunch. John Marshall and Nicholas Lutsko, co-authors of the study, initially suspected that adding oceans to a monsoon model would decrease its intensity but found the opposite to be true.

 Looking forward Lutsko and Marshall plan on using their research to explain why the monsoon system didn’t work when the northern hemisphere of the world used to be much colder. Their research could also be the key the making more accurate predictions about the monsoon rains as the influence of one more variable has been accounted for. The ocean heat transporting mechanism may be a new knob in controlling the seasonal South Asian monsoon, as well as other monsoon systems around the world.
