The insurance sector is expected to fly high with the opening up of FDI in the sector. Industry players expect innovation and new insurance products to come in the market, thus giving consumers a wider variety of choices. However, until now, the the $66.4 billion industry has been driven by only a handful of insurance products. BI India brings you some of the popular insurance products in the market and the reason behind their undisputed domination. 
 
<keyword id="514336" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Endowment-Plan">Endowment Plan</keyword> 
 We all buy a life insurance policy the moment we get our first job. A buyer is often lured into buying a life insurance product through its tax benefits. <keyword id="161880" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yashish-Dahiya">Yashish Dahiya</keyword>, co-founder of <keyword id="161885" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Policy-Bazaar">Policy Bazaar</keyword> says, “Traditional policies including endowment and term plan sell more because all non-online channels in insurance companies only sell traditional plans. This is primarily because of the commissions that they would normally make by selling it.” 
 
He further explained that traditional life insurance policies offer short term gains to the consumers which include getting a loan against their policy. “In addition to this, traditional plans offer guaranteed benefits to customers vis-à-vis equity-linked investments. The fact that investment under traditional plans is mostly made in specified government and corporate securities, makes them less risky and more suitable for people with lower-risk appetite,” adds Dahiya. 
 
<keyword id="44600" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ULIP">ULIP</keyword> 
 
Unit Linked Insurance Product or commonly known as ULIP have recently started become popular. The new version of ULIPs that was first introduced in 2014 has been gaining popularity amongst retail investors. It offers dual benefit of life cover as well as investment. 
 
Besides, with the onset of online distribution of ULIP, the premium charges have sharply dropped - with no charges for premium allocation, policy admission or discontinuance, except 2.25% fund management charge per annum (for the first 10 years of holding) and mortality charges. According to industry experts, at present, some of the ULIPs cost less than mutual funds. 
 
“The flexibility extended by ULIP has been attracting significant number of investors. ULIPs provide investors an option to invest either in debt funds, equity funds or hybrid funds. Each of these funds has a different level of risk attached to it and you could choose to invest in either of these funds as per your risk appetite. It also gives investors the option to switch between funds with no tax implications whatsoever,” notes Dahiya. 
 
Motor Insurance 
 
Industry players believe that motor insurance is one of the most popular insurance products as it is mandatory to buy one at the time of purchase of the car. However, when compared with health insurance, the premium amount for motor insurance is relatively lower than that for health insurance. This too is also believed to have contributed in making motor insurance more popular than health in India. 
 
Health insurance 
 
Even though India still ranks low globally when it comes to health insurance, industry players have noted that this insurance product is fast gaining popularity. Market estimates suggested that health insurance is the fourth biggest insurance product, next only to motor insurance. 
 
Property Insurance: 
 
Natural calamities as well as unexpected damages to property has boosted this insurance product in the country. Industry players have attributed this trend to the improved awareness amongst people. “The very fact that most of the insurance companies introduced insurance plans that safeguards properties, commercial and personal assets against fire, reiterates its relevance and demand amongst people at-large,” elaborates Dahiya.

<ul><li>A CARE Ratings report says that <keyword id="1415541" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-investments">new investments</keyword> in India fell to a 15-year low in the first half of FY20. </li><li>The total new investment in H1 FY20 stood at ₹1.9 lakh crore.</li><li><keyword id="6362476" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">Investments</keyword> in manufacturing, construction, real estate and irrigation have increased but those in mining, electricity have taken a hit.</li></ul>The Indian <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> is in a dismal state and now a CARE ratings report shows that new investments in India fell to a 15-year low in the first half of FY20. The total new investment in H1 FY20 stood at ₹1.9 lakh crore. During the same period in the previous year, as much as ₹6.1 lakh crore were pumped into the economy. According to the report, investments in manufacturing, construction, real estate and irrigation have increased but those into mining and electricity have taken a hit. “The investment rate has declined consistently over the years and remained range bound between 28%-29% of GDP in the past 4 years. This has been a detrimental factor for the overall economic growth of the country,” said the report. Odisha had the highest share of new investments, and has overtaken Maharashtra. Investments are also slowing down because of the rising number of stalled projects. In FY19, 53% of government owned projects were stalled. However, in FY20, half of the stalled projects are privately owned. Most of the stalled projects were seen in the services sector, followed by electricity and manufacturing. The report stated that the reason for stalled projects has been lack of non- environmental clearances and lack of funds.

Top VC firm <keyword id="136147" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India</keyword> has sold 17.2 crore shares of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> in two tranches in the open market, lowering down its stake in the online food aggregator to 4.4 per cent from earlier 6.41 per cent. In a fresh filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (<keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword>), Zomato said Sequoia Capital India sold some 6.7 crore shares in the September 6-October 14, 2021 period and 10.5 crore shares between June 27-August 25, 2022. The stock sales were performed by <keyword id="14821825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-growth-investment-holdings" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Growth Investment Holdings</keyword> I and <keyword id="13302083" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sci-growth-investments-ii" source="Orion">SCI Growth Investments II</keyword>, according to Zomato. <keyword id="10639596" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-investments-iv" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Investments IV</keyword> also received 45,153,346 incremental equity shares on August 10 owing to the acquisition of quick-commerce delivery platform Blinkit, which further has a lock-in period of one year. Sequoia Capital India joins a list of private market investors like Delivery Hero, Moore Strategic Ventures, and <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword>, which have sold their shares in Zomato in the past months, either in open market or via block deals, as the online food delivery platform's stock gets hammered. On Friday, Zomato shares closed around Rs 61.85. Earlier this month, ride-hailing platform Uber sold its 7.8 per cent stake worth over $390 million in Zomato. Uber, which suffered around $707 million loss in its Zomato investment in the first half of this year, sold its share in the food delivery aggregator via a block deal on stock exchanges that has been bought by several global and Indian VCs. The Zomato block deal was executed at Rs 50.44 per share equivalent to 612 million or 7.8 per cent of total outstanding shares. In a statement to IANS, Zomato had said that "We are a public company and are not privy to what our shareholders are doing with their shares". According to the company, the losses for Blinkit are coming down every month -- from Rs 2,040 million (about $26 million) in January 2022 to Rs 929 million ($12 million) in July. The 10-minute delivery platform was acquired by Zomato for Rs 4,447 crore (about $568 million). Sequoia Capital offloads 2% of its stake in Zomato

<ul><li><keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> India has announced a VC Brand Incubator Program where it will partner with VC funds in India. </li><li>In the first edition, Facebook has partnered with Mumbai-based Sauce.vc.</li><li>Earlier in June, Facebook had invested an undisclosed amount in social e-commerce startup Meesho.</li></ul>Facebook India announced a VC Brand Incubator Program where it is partnering with venture capital funds in India to aid small and medium sized businesses. Facebook will help accelerate the growth of SMBs in which the VCs have invested. “SMBs are the backbone of our economy and Facebook is the default destination for them to thrive and grow. Their seamless growth can lead to consistent job creation, adding to GDP growth. Working with VC funds is crucial as it allows us to scale and support SMBs at an early-stage itself, fast-tracking their growth,” said Archana Vohra, Director, Small and Medium Businesses at Facebook India. Vohra also said that several SMBs are aiding a larger social change. They are empowering women entrepreneurs, while impacting businesses in tier-2 and tier-3 towns. To help drive this change, Facebook partnered with early stage venture capital fund Mumbai-based Sauce.vc. As a part of the program, Facebook experts will organise skilling and training sessions that will help SMBs expand their businesses via digital medium. Facebook, which helps 90 million small businesses globally, has been investing in the Indian ecosystem. In June, the social media giant invested an undisclosed amount in an Indian social commerce startup Meesho. This was the first time that the global giant had picked up equity in an Indian startup. Meesho is a marketplace for resellers, and connects them with customers via social media channels like WhatsApp and Facebook. Facebook is strengthening its India investments – partners with VCs to aid small businesses

<ul><li>PE funds are now increasingly investing in <keyword id="114245" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="buyouts">buyouts</keyword>, cutting bigger cheques and snapping up larger stakes in target companies.</li><li>In August, $1.6 billion worth of PE transactions took place across 50 deals with buyout deals doubling in value compared to August 2017. </li><li>The share of buyouts - which are typically marked by a controlling stake of more than 50% in a company - has steadily been rising.</li></ul>For years, the story of private equity (PE) investing in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> has been dominated by funding for early-stage <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> and <keyword id="163960" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Growth-Capital">growth capital</keyword>. PE funds are now increasingly investing in buyouts, cutting bigger cheques and snapping up larger stakes in target companies. The share of buyouts - which are typically marked by a controlling stake of more than 50% in a company - has steadily been rising to reach $5.5 billion so far in 2018, which is more than double the amount seen last year and the highest in five years, Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/inMMRxN0yk5Yzb6QaLsKwM/PEled-buyout-deals-hit-a-record-55-billion.html">reported </a>citing data from Venture Intelligence. In August, $1.6 billion worth of PE transactions took place across 50 deals with buyout deals doubling in value compared to August 2017, according to an EY <a href="https://www.parthenon.ey.com/in/en/newsroom/news-releases/ey-pe-buyouts-lead-investments-in-august-2018">report. </a> KKR’s $530 million buyout of 60% stake in waste management company Ramky Enviro Engineers Ltd was the largest deal in August 2018. Other large buyout deals in 2018 include Kedaara Capital and Partners Group’s acquisition of Vishal Mega Mart for $734 million, and GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Council’s $450 million in renewable energy company Greenko Energy Holdings. “The Indian PE industry appears to have come of age, with PE backed platforms attracting marquee <keyword id="89429" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-investors">global investors</keyword> like Berkshire Hathaway, which recently announced an investment of ~$300-US$400 million in Paytm,” Vivek Soni, Partner and National Leader Private Equity Services, EY, said in the EY report. Key drivers PE funds have had a good year in terms of fund-raising, increasing their ability to plough in more money in investments. As of the end of August, PE funds had over $40 billion in capital marked for India investments, according to the EY report. Given the tough market to raise loans via traditional banks, many Indian companies are also increasingly turning towards <keyword id="108089" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Private-equity-firms">private equity firms</keyword> for alternative sources of capital and have been willing to forgo stakes in part due to the operational expertise these firms promise in running business in similar sectors. In addition to available capital, PE firms also begun filling in the funding gap for many power and <keyword id="17408" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure">infrastructure</keyword> companies that require large investments, or companies looking to divest ‘non-core’ divisions to shore up capital as they look to grow or turn around.

When the <keyword id="1700843" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines-group" source="Orion">Singapore Airlines Group</keyword> (SIA) released its operating statistics for December 2022, it revealed that it carried almost 12 per cent more passengers compared with a month ago and four times more than a year ago. Its two carriers, SIA and Scoot, carried a total of 2.7 million passengers in December. For the entire year, it carried a total of 20.7 million passengers, a jump of 900 per cent from 2021. The airline cited the relaxation of travel restrictions in Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan for boosting the demand for air travel and supporting a recovery in those markets. Though impressive, the passenger numbers are still 76 per cent of December 2019's figure of 3.54 million passengers carried. SIA's passenger load factor (PLF) in December 2022 came in at 89.7 per cent during the month -- 3.8 percentage points more compared with a month ago and 43.2 per centage points more year-on-year. The airline noted that this is the highest monthly PLF in the SIA's history, full-service carrier, SIA, and low-cost airline, Scoot posted record monthly PLFs of 89.1 per cent and 91.6 per cent respectively. PLF for December 2019 was 87.6 per cent. However, it should be noted that PLF is a function of the number of planes an airline has in service. During this period where there's a global shortage of capacity, some <keyword id="44023" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> under utilise their planes either to keep airfares high or because they do not have enough resources to maximize the use of their fleet. According to fleet data from ch-aviation.com, at the moment, SIA has 36 inactive aircraft between its two main airline brands. Among the aircraft sitting on the ground are 15 Boeing 777ERs, two Airbus A350s, two A380s, and two 787-8s. With increasing competition in the coming year and with China's reopening from COVID-19 lockdowns, airlines in Northeast Asia are expected to put more capacity in the air which would result in supply putting pressure on prices. SIA is expected to do the same to contend for market share. Already in December, Scoot resumed flights to Zhengzhou, China in December 2022, while SIA restarted fortnightly passenger services from Singapore to Beijing on 30 December 2022. While the China market is still slowly recovering, SIA has been expanding its capacity in India, an important market, since the middle of last year. SIA has already resumed flights to the following South Asian cities at frequencies matching or exceeding pre-C levels: Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dubai, Hyderabad, Kathmandu, Kochi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. To underline the strategic importance of the Indian market to SIA, it made a commitment to continue to invest in the market late last year. On November 29, the airline announced that it will be converting its 49 per cent stake in Vistara into a 20 per cent stake in the new <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> Group, with the additional USD250 million used to acquire another 5 per cent. SIA has also agreed to inject up to another USD615 million after the merger is completed, (expected by March 2024), should the new airline group require additional funds from its shareholders to fund its restructuring and expansion. The actual amount will depend on factors including the progress of the enlarged Air India's business plan, and its access to other funding options. The airline said in a statement, "Through this transaction, SIA will reinforce its partnership with Tata and immediately acquire a strategic stake in an entity that is four to five times larger in scale compared to Vistara. The merger would bolster SIA's presence in India, strengthen its multi-hub strategy, and allow it to continue participating directly in a large and fast-growing aviation market." When Tata Sons agreed to buy Air India, the acquisition was completed a year ago on January 27, Tata was expected to consolidate its airline assets which meant it was likely to merge Vistara with Air India. SIA could have stepped away from its investment in the Indian market and sold its 49 per cent stake in Vistara. However, it decided to take a minority stake in a larger airline, and here are some of the possible reasons. First of all, the new Air India Group will be a much bigger player in the Indian aviation market. Its four airlines will have a 26 per cent market share based on domestic seat capacity and 21 per cent of international seat capacity in the current quarter, based on OAG data. India as a market and a source of travelers is of strategic importance to both SIA as well as Singapore overall. SIA will in time be able to increase its connectivity to Indian destinations as well as serve Indian passengers on international routes using Changi Airport as a transit point. This could open up attractive destinations in other parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, North Asia, and the west coast of America to Indian passengers. With the massive Terminal 5 in Changi opening in the middle of the next decade, any additional passenger churn will be vital to ensure the airport expansion fulfills its promise. India is among the top three aviation markets in the world and poised to double passenger traffic over the next 10 years supported by rising income levels and ongoing investments in its aviation infrastructure. It is projected to exceed 300 million airline passengers by 2027. However, India also remains underserved with low international seats per capita, signifying significant growth potential. Another factor that SIA would have considered is that the CEO of the new Air India group is a trusted 25-year veteran of the company before he joined the Indian airline in the middle of last year. Campbell Wilson, a New Zealander, was previously chief executive of Scoot and rotated through various roles at SIA in countries like Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong, and was senior vice president of sales and marketing for SIA. As quoted by Fortune, he said in a letter to employees on the one-year anniversary of the completion of Tata's takeover of Air India, "Taken together, the progress over the last 12 months has been nothing short of stunning, even if so much of what we have been working on has been behind the scenes, building platforms and capabilities so that our future ambitions can take flight. There is of course much more that needs to be done, and everyone internally and externally - is hungry for us to do it." Wishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday on Sunday, Foxconn representative V Lee wrote in a LinkedIn post: "Under your leadership, Foxconn has grown smoothly and rapidly in India". "We will work even harder to present you with a greater birthday gift next year, aiming for another doubling of employment, FDI, and business size in India," Lee said in the post. Replying to the post on X (formerly Twitter), IT, Electronics and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Government is "fully committed" in its endeavour to support and facilitate. Earlier this month, Young Liu, Chairman and CEO of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), said that India will be an important country in terms of manufacturing in the future, his comment adding to a growing chorus of global voices acknowledging the country's bold moves to position itself as electronics and hi-tech production powerhouse. In an interaction with reporters in Taipei, the top honcho of the Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant had further said the development of the entire ecosystem and industrial chain, and opportunities for development in India are "very, very huge opportunities". "If there is no big change, India will be a very important country in terms of manufacturing in the future," Liu had said. In the past, it took 30 years to build the entire supply chain ecosystem in China, he noted, adding that while it will take an "appropriate amount of time in India" and the process will be shorter given the experience. The environment too is not quite the same, he had said pointing to the advent of new technologies like AI and generative AI. India is wooing global IT and electronics players with policy sweeteners and incentive schemes, making a push to position itself as a global hub for hi-tech manufacturing. India hopes to play on the strength of its storied talent and skill base, vibrant market, and enabling policies to corner a substantial chunk of new investments flowing into electronics and semiconductor production, and global value chains. Recently, as many as 40 companies, including big names like Foxconn Group, HP, Dell and Lenovo, applied for incentives under India's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) IT hardware scheme for manufacturing laptops, PCs and servers. Last month, Foxconn also said it sees the potential of investing several billions of dollars in India if it gets to completely implement its plan. Liu during Foxconn's second quarter earnings call in August had said that the company's Indian arm has achieved a turnover of close to USD 10 billion on an annual basis and there is a lot of investment potential in India. He had said Foxconn operates about nine campuses in India.
