The whole world seems to be headed to Brazil over the past few months. The country has been in the news for several reasons – an Internet summit, the glittering World Cup football and finally, the sixth <keyword id="175259" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brics">BRICS</keyword> summit. 
 
In April, Brazil successfully hosted the Global Multistakeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance (NETmundial) to discuss the Internet governance principles and the roadmap for the future evolution of the Internet governance ecosystem, despite the WikiLeaks issue. Interestingly, three BRICS countries, Brazil, India and South Africa, attended the NETmundial underlining the importance of the Internet and e-commerce. 
 
BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are the emerging and growing economies of the world, with China and India leading the race. The five countries are home to nearly half of the world’s population and account for about 20% of global GDP. Studies indicate that BRICS could be wealthier in future than the developed nations of today and may emerge the leaders of the New World Order. 
 
BRICS is working to counteract the Western hegemony and ensure that the BRICS countries have a greater say in global issues, especially in the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund. 
 India is the second largest economy after China and <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, the newly elected Prime Minister of India who is attending his first BRICS summit, has emphasised on peace, prosperity and economic growth. 
 
“India attaches high importance to the BRICS forum for promoting global economic growth, peace and stability,’’ said Modi. “The Summit theme of Inclusive Growth, Sustainable Development will enable us to shape the post-2015 Development Agenda being discussed in the United Nations,’’ he added. 
 
The Prime Minister has clearly stated that BRICS is also a political forum. “We cannot remain mute spectators,” he added. Modi has called for “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and stated, “I firmly believe that terrorism, in any shape or form, is against humanity. There should be zero tolerance towards terrorism. The choices we make now will shape the future of not just our countries but the world at large.” 
 
Modi has continued to underline India’s economic growth and commitment to the environment, and said that his government would invest heavily in infrastructure, affordable housing, healthcare, education and clean energy. “We will champion clean and frugal resource use to maintain sustainability of our development process, without constraining our growth,” he added. 
 He has also called for greater co-operation in the fields of Internet usage and security. On the economic front, he has advocated an open, rule-based international trading regime for global economic growth and food security. India is keen that the BRICS Financial Institutional Bodies and Currency Reserve Fund are set up to counter the <keyword id="6355408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IMF">IMF</keyword> and the US dollar currency. According to BRICS nations, as the IMF is controlled by Western countries, most of its funds go to the West. 
 As of now, the real success of the summit is the approval of the <keyword id="989905" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BRICS-Development-Bank">BRICS Development Bank</keyword>, with an initial capital of $100 billion for infrastructure investments. 
 
Narendra Modi’s first multilateral diplomacy seems to have been fruitful. It has been agreed that although the proposed BRICS Development Bank will have its headquarters in Shanghai (China), the first rotational presidency for five years will go to India. 
 
Russia, after being expelled from G8 over the Ukraine issue, was looking for and received support against the US threat of new economic sanctions. It will be surely pleased that there will be a counter to the IMF. 
 
The Trade Ministers’ meeting at the summit also decided to strengthen their economic relations. The document titled A BRICS Perspective on International Investment Agreements would serve as a voluntary reference to help countries with a more equitable approach to investment treaties. Intra-BRICS co-operation in e-commerce and in the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) are to be promoted through promotion of business contacts and information-sharing on regulations. 
 
The Indian Prime Minister’s bilateral meeting with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, was keenly awaited and has been successful. The two leaders have agreed to amicable and negotiated solutions at an early date to deal with the recurrent border disputes between the countries. 
 
Modi has called for a rectification of India’s $34 billion trade deficit with China, which is the largest with any country. He has asked for increased infrastructure investments in India by China. 
 
Xi has said that China and India should join hands in setting up global rules and invited Modi to attend the 21-nation APEC group summit in the later part of this year. Xi has confirmed that he will be visiting India in September. Both countries will work on improving interactions in all other sectors including tourism. 
 
India has been keen to join APEC to boost its economic growth and this is the first time the country has been invited to attend the meet. 
 
The BRICS summit has underlined India’s growing international power and Narendra Modi has established his leadership credentials.

On Saturday, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on said that India was doing well in almost every economic indicator. 
 "By almost every economic indicator, India is doing better than we (NDA government) took office 18 months ago," Modi said in his address to the <keyword id="5891" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="ASEAN">Asean</keyword> Business and Investment Summit on the first day of his four-day visit to <keyword id="8695" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Malaysia">Malaysia</keyword> and <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>. 
 
He said India and Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) were natural partners. 
 
"Our ties date back to ancient times," he said. 
 
"I have been saying that the 21st century belongs to Asia. I say this because of the track record of Asean countries," Modi said amid loud applause. 
 
The Prime Minister will attend the 13th Asean-India Summit later on Saturday and the 10th East Asia Summit on Sunday.

Efforts to push the Turkmenistan- Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) project have also been included in the program. The project, reportedly, is a crucial one for India's energy needs as it will carry gas from central Asia. However, it has also been hampered because of lack of physical connectivity.

India to host Global India AI Summit 2024 in New Delhi on July 3-4

Counter-terrorism and economic reforms will dominate the discussions amongst the leaders of the world's 20 largest economies at the G20 Summit in Germany next week, to be attended by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>. The 12th G20 Summit on July 7-8 in Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, will also discuss issues like free and open trade, climate change, migration, sustainable development and global stability. The prime minister will lead the Indian delegation at G20 meeting, which will also include NITI Aayog Vice Chairman and India's G20 Sherpa Arvind Panagariya. Besides, the Department of Economic Affairs Secretary will also be there to lead discussions on the finance track of the summit, Alok Amitabh Dimri, Joint Secretary (Multilateral Economic Relations) in the <keyword id="6374106" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-External-Affairs">Ministry of External Affairs</keyword> said. The summit will conclude with a joint statement by the world leaders. The G20 is the central forum for international cooperation on financial and economic issues. The G20 countries account for more than four-fifths of gross world product and three-quarters of global trade, and are home to almost two-thirds of the world's population. The "Group of Twenty" is made up of 19 countries and the European Union. The countries are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the <keyword id="6361754" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Kingdom">United Kingdom</keyword> and the USA. Germany assumed the <keyword id="4709730" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="g20-presidency">G20 Presidency</keyword> on December 1, 2016. In a media briefing about Indian engagements at G20 Summit, Dimri said it will begin with a two-hour "leaders' retreat" on July 7 morning where the theme of the discussions will be counter-terrorism. He said this theme goes well with the prime minister's engagements with other world leaders and there was expectation that the issue of counter-terrorism will remain a separate thrust area as was the case with the last G20 Summit in Antalya, Turkey last year. The summit will also include four working sessions, including on growth and trade, climate and energy as well as on sustainable development and labour-related issues. Dimri said Panagariya as India's G20 Sherpa has already been part of three preparatory meetings on the summit agenda and will attend one more such meeting before the world leaders meet in Hamburg. Modi is leaving for Israel on July 4 for a three-day visit and will go to Germany after that for the G20 meet. The finance track of the G20 meeting will include discussions on issues like fiscal and monetary reforms, climate finance and green finance. Dimri said open and free trade would be another area of focus at the summit deliberations, while a special focus on Africa is also expected as it was one of the key thrust areas for the host Germany's Chancellor <keyword id="76" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Angela-Merkel">Angela Merkel</keyword>. Besides, women and youth employment, gender inequality, re-skilling and health will also figure among discussions and outcome of the meeting. Advisers to the heads of state and government, known as Sherpas, have been preparing for this meeting for long. Asked whether Modi will also have bilaterals with any of the world leaders on the sidelines, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Gopal Baglay said any bilateral meeting is announced very close to the event. "There is a process involved in that... We will keep you informed as and when those things materialise," he said. On whether the leaders' retreat on counter-terrorism would also include issues like cross-border terror threats, Dimri said one has to understand that the summit was not taking place in any regional context and it was a global summit. He further observed that the summit was taking place in Germany and it was more logical that the events in Europe would figure with regard to counter-terrorism related discussions. He also clarified that the leaders' retreat was not a formal session and the Chair (Germany) has decided to pull aside the world leaders for two hours for this retreat before opening of the Summit on the subject of counter-terrorism. "This shows the significance the world leaders attach to this issue," he said, while clarifying it was not one of the formal sessions where discussions happen as per the agenda and here the world leaders will interact with each other in in "very intimate surroundings". At the same time, some outcome should be expected as the leaders would be discussing this important issue, he said. On whether India can expect support on CCIT (Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism) -- its key anti-terror initiative at UN --- Dimri replied in affirmative, and said the CCIT has been there in most of the bilateral or multilateral documents. Asked whether India was prepared to counter, if China talks about its OBOR (One Belt, One Road) initiative, Dimri said one needs to understand such summits do not involve the leaders going and speaking at their own volition as there are fixed agenda points for discussions that get finalised after rounds of meetings by Sherpas. "These are not one-off meetings and have been preceded by a number of meetings through the year, including of working groups, meetings of Sherpas and they have bunched up agenda from multiple streams...and OBOR has not been discussed so far," he said.

Credit will follow the data "Historically, lending in India has been to big guys in large amounts for a long time for assets. A lot of challenges we have today are because of that," stated Nilekani. The boom in data can be a boon for small businesses. Flow-based lending means that small businesses will be able to raise small, short-term working capital loans. In cash flow lending, companies are allowed to borrow money based on the projected future cash flows. "So, millions of businesses that don’t have access to credit today will get access," he said. Around seven to eight businesses have in-principle approval from the RBI for account aggregation and 30-40 startups working on flow based lending. Even big banks are showing interest in this model. "Credit will be first example of data being empowered for users," said Nilekani.

In maritime cooperation, areas such as safety and security of the maritime area, maritime domain awareness, disaster management, blue economy, et cetera, have been covered." Prime Minister also announced the formation of an ASEAN India Fund for Digital Future, which would provide financial connectivity between ASEAN and India, said Kumar, adding, "Prime Minister also announced support for ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia), which is an ASEAN think tank, which would be our knowledge partner to further deepen ASEAN-India relations." He also said that the Prime Minister, during his interactions and discussions, "called for a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific, emphasised ASEAN centrality and made the point that cod complements the same". Following his participation in the summits, PM Modi thanked Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, and the people. "Had a very short but fruitful Indonesia visit, where I met ASEAN and other leaders. I thank President @jokowi , the Indonesian Government and people for their welcome," wrote PM Modi on X.
