No more yearning for the good old days of the exciting, traditional, family <keyword id="6354218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="circus">circus</keyword> outing. Funnily dressed short or tall, thin or fat clowns, trapeze artistes doing their jaw-dropping acts in mid-air or stunt-men showing off their dare-devil tricks - all a dying breed in India - will now come alive on your living room television sets, in an online 'avatar', thanks to modern tech. In what is billed as a global first, India's only surviving troupe -- <keyword id="33113" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rambo-circus">Rambo Circus</keyword> -- will launch a ticketed show in a digital format which will be shown live at specific hours, for audiences from the friendly neighbourhood to the global arena. "We have suffered a lot due to the Covid pandemic lockdown... Of the 24 circus companies in India, 23 have packed up already... We are doing this for the sheer survival of my 100-member circus family," Rambo Circus co-owner Sujit Dilip told IANS. Hoping to draw "First Blood", much like the character of 'Rambo' enacted by Hollywood megastar Sylvester Stallone, Sujit Dilip said the first specially-designed ticketed performance will go online from September 26 to October 6, and hoped to create a revolution in the world of 'live entertainment' going digital. It is named "Life Is A Circus" and will be an ode to the great showmanship of mesmerizing acrobatic stunts, trapeze acts and clownish laughter, promising 'clean fun and complete family enjoyment'. "People can buy the tickets for the event to be hosted on a virtual platform and watch it from any corner of the world. We hope to raise awareness for the cause and help the Rambo Circus family to emerge stronger from the current difficult times," said co-owner Sumit Dilip. The brothers pointed out how, in the 1970-1990s, every kid cherished nostalgic memories of visiting a circus, awestruck, watching with wide eyes majestic elephants, lions, tigers, hippos, rhinos, horses, rabbits, pigeons, parrots, et al, obeying the cracking whip of the stern aRing Master', apparently feared and revered by the deadly creatures. "With isolation the new norm now, we are reinventing the whole circus experience by bringing it online, thanks to the digital revolution, for regaining visibility and dignity to the live art form," said Sujit. It would be like a story narrated in the background with the circus tricks, weaving in the history, global travels and current travails of Rambo Circus itself and the never-say-die enthusiasm of the artistes which kept it alive for nearly 30 years, with a grand finale bowing to the Covid Warriors combating the pandemic. The digital circus show - in collaboration with entities like Saurabh Khurana, Sr. Vice-President of Laqshya Live Experiences, Dinesh Shetty, founder of Production Crew Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and Anand Mahesh Talari, Managing Director, Mavcomm Group - hopes to rekindle the love for circuses and live amusement that, well - rests in peace in India - owing to various problems. "Despite films, television and online entertainment, live circuses are very much alive in many countries and do very well... I watched a circus in China that had around 150 birds and animals with mind-boggling effects and entertainment... Similar are the ventures in Europe, Australia, Russia and many other countries where people return amazed and get full value for money," said Sujit. In India, of the 24 circuses till recently, 23 have packed up -- probably forever -- leaving thousands of artistes and supporting staff rendered jobless, animals had to be rehabilitated, largely due to prevailing laws or hounding by animal activists besides the onslaught of films, television and Internet-based entertainment. The Dilip brothers are optimistic that the upcoming 10-day special show will help breathe life into the near-extinct Indian circus industry and take the modern generation to the magical era of 'live entertainment' that their parents and grandparents witnessed.

Rambo Circus, one of India's oldest circuses, goes online amid the COVID-19 pandemic

By Justin Rao Mumbai, Apr 9 () An empty tent is a circus group's worst nightmare but the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus has compounded the problems of an already struggling business, says Sujit Dilip, the proprietor of Rambo Circus, who had to put out an appeal for help.Dilip said he was initially "embarrassed" to ask for help but decided to reach out to public as they were grounded in Airoli, Navi Mumbai from March 13, when the state and later the nation announced the lockdown due to the pandemic.With no shows possible and the responsibility of around 80 artistes and 20 animals, Dilip said they were staring at an uncertain future as the pandemic has taken away their chance to earn money during the peak summer season."We were about to start our circus when the CM announced the lockdown from March 13 and we had to close. It'll take at least three-four months for the situation to settle down but by then monsoon will start and it'll be a bad time for us again," Dilip told in an interview.Circuses in the country, Dilip said, have two primary seasons: the summers and Diwali. Last year, Rambo Circus braved the Aurangabad floods-which damaged their tents and lights-faced heavy rainfall in Pune and finally arrived in the suburban Malad here during Diwali to make up for the losses."I had to sell off my flat to bail out the circus. But even the festive period earning was hit. So we finally decided to focus on the summer of 2020. Who would've thought this would happen?" he wondered.The staff of 80, residing in a gated wall compound venue, includes two families with small children-who don't perform-25 women and as many men. There are 17 dogs, including seven who are under retirement and one pony. Then there is the support staff: animal keepers, cooks, electricians, designers and tent makers. In the initial phase of the lockdown, those hailing from nearby towns in the state headed home. Others, who had to risk crossing state borders amid the pandemic, chose to stay back, Dilip said. "Indian circus is like a moving village. We are like vagabonds. Every 45 days, we change our location. But where can we go today? There are no trucks available, everything's shut. It's wise to stay here and wait for the permission. It's the safest to stay inside," he said.As soon as the word spread on WhatsApp that the Rambo Circus was feeling the heat of the lockdown, many admirers and longtime well wishers of these artistes offered help, Dilip said."For the staff, circus is the home. 'Jeena yahan marna yahan.' They can't go anywhere else... But right now, we all are so happy. The artistes always felt they're the neglected part of the society. But today for the first time we are feeling proud that so many people are thinking about us."In a day, Rambo Circus requires at least 55 kg rice for its staff and animals, and a ration of such magnitude was impossible for them to procure. Dilip, who has been looking after the circus for over 25 years now, was stunned by the offers of help via social media.A cancer trust contributed Rs 50,000, while a government servant donated her pension of Rs 30,000 to the circus, he said. Politicians too stepped in, Dilip said, with Cabinet Minister Chhagan Bhujbal providing them with ration, Shiv Sena leader Vijay Chougule pitching in to help and even the Thane deputy collector reaching out, asking if they needed animal food.The local municipality is providing the artistes with food packets and drinking water every day. "The circus would have just died had people not helped, if the NGOs, government wouldn't have come forward."With no possibility of any shows for at least four months, the challenge now is to raise funds to pay the staff their salaries.A fan from Bengaluru suggested Rambo Circus should set up a donation fund on crowdfunding platform Ketto, co-founded by actor Kunal Kapoor."We then drew a budget of Rs 8.5 lakh for the salary and food of our staff for two months. "Once the target is achieved, we will get the money and then distribute it among them. Some have their families in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. I need to give them money so that they can help their families back home."So far, Rambo Circus has raised over Rs 5 lakh, with even actor-filmmaker Renuka Shahane donating for them. "I've never seen an entire community taking care of us. This can only happen in India. We have spread happiness to so many people over the years. I think now they are giving us back. The study also reveals that there is an increasing affinity for brands that give back to the society and are trying to support communities as 46% of 35-44 year old women are keen on products that support social causes. Moreover, around 45% of Indians switched to buying locally-grown produce since the pandemic, a trend highest among women aged 35-44 (58%). This same group of women also led the switch to buying more organic products. The report suggests that this is an opportunity for local brands to talk about their sustainability efforts by calling out how they source their products and how this impacts the environment. Speaking about some of the key factors that have led to people leaning towards localism, <keyword id="3056481" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nidhi-Sinha">Nidhi Sinha</keyword>, Head of Content, Mintel Indian Consumer said, “The pandemic paved the way for local products to come to the fore. As people struggled to meet ends due to the imposed lockdown restrictions, consumption of local produce helped consumers to pass on benefits to local artisans, farmers and communities. 34% of consumers prefer products that support local communities. In what could be a blot in India’s social progress, the government is planning an amendment in <keyword id="6377229" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Child-labour">Child Labour</keyword> Prohibition Act that would legally permit children below the age of 14 to work in select family enterprises if it doesn't hamper their education. 
 
As per a news report by The Economic Times, bill will retain the proposal of a complete ban on child labour in any organisation, big or small, as proposed by the previous government. A draft provision in the Child Labour Prohibition Act says the prohibition will not apply if children are helping the family in fields, forests and home-based work after school hours or during vacations, or while attending technical institutions. The new norm will also apply to the entertainment industry and sports except the circus, a proposal by the labour ministry says. 
 The ET report confirms, children between 14 and 18 years will not be allowed to work in hazardous industries. According to the <keyword id="259703" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Labour-ministry-official">labour ministry official</keyword>, this provision is in conformity with the ILO convention and is therefore likely to sail through even in the Rajya Sabha where the government is in minority. 
This amendment, brought about by the UPA in 2012 proposed to extend the ban to all industries. It also introduced a new category of adolescents " 14 to 18 years " who were banned from hazardous industries, but allowed to work in other sectors. 
 
The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Bill, 2012, introduced in the Rajya Sabha, recommended a complete ban on child labour until they finish elementary education, guaranteed under the Right to Education Act. 
 
The labour ministry has also finalised the changes to two other archaic laws. "The effort is to push two more legislation in the current session, including the Small Factories Act and amendment to the Employees Provident Fund &amp; Miscellaneous Provision Act," the ministry official told the financial daily.

Modi, during his visit to <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> on September 27/28 will address the masses. 
 As reported by Economic Times, the community leadership in the Bay Area and Modi’s aides has been visiting the region and then zeroed in on the SAP Center in San Jose. NaMo, after Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1949, will become the second Indian PM visiting the west coast. SAP Center is the home of <keyword id="230717" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="San-Jose-Sharks">San Jose Sharks</keyword> in National (ice) Hockey League and is known among sports buffs as the "Shark Tank." 
 The arena, with a capacity to accommodate around 17,000 people is very much like the Madison Square Garden’s in <keyword id="72226" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-York-City">New York City</keyword> where Modi made an awe-inspiring appearance last September. The venue was preferred over Cow Palace in San Francisco, which seats only around 12,000. 
 The SAP Center, when is not hosting NHL/NFL events, is home to entertainment which varies from circuses to concerts. The “Shark Tank” is cited as the fourth busiest arena in the US and also a number of big names in the entertainment industry like <keyword id="15313" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madonna">Madonna</keyword>, Miley Cyrus, Sonu Nigam and even ShahRukh Khan have performed there. In fact, someone else from India is going to beat the Prime Minister to SAP — the comedian Kapil Sharma is slated to perform on August 1. 
 Organizers are expecting an even more crowded event than the Madison Square Garden event, which is still being spoken of in awed tones in New York and <keyword id="6354998" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Washington">Washington</keyword>, considering that California has the largest population of NRIs in the US, with a heavy concentration in the Bay Area. 
 
The Prime Minister’s program is yet to be finalized with the first meeting between his aides and local community organizers kicking off over the weekend. 
 
Apart from the community event at Shark Tank, a tech sortie, given the Prime Minister's interest in technology is also on the cards. Silicon Valley is home to storied companies such as Google, Intel, HP, and Oracle, not to speak of nifty new social media enterprises such as Facebook and Twitter that Prime Minister Modi is perhaps more familiar with.

An engineering graduate from NIT-Kurukshetra, masters in Electrical Engineering from University of Wyoming and MBA from Wharton, he was working with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google</a> before <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a> roped him in as the Product Head. He is widely believed to bring more focus on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a> app. 
 
A year on, he’s stepped down from his role in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a>, and is looking to start something of his own in the Valley, but it'll have some Indian connection, he promises. 
 
Business Insider sat down with this 38-year-old Valley veteran (wow, that rhymes) for a candid chat. 
 
Not every Indian kid gets to be at Wharton and Google. How did it happen for you? 
If you look at my career, it’s a classic <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Silicon Valley</a> template. Undergrad here, grad school there, worked in a bunch of companies, a startup along the way, and so on. Many Indians are successful in the Valley and across the world with the same template. 
 
Much of my success is attributed to luck and chance. Everything doesn’t happen because you’re smart and accomplished. You take leaps of faith, and luck happens. You have to put yourself in that place to get lucky. A lot of people don’t try. 
 
I had a cushy job at Cadence. I earned well, and didn’t have to work too hard. I threw it all away, and decided to go to business school. Took a quarter million in loan and went to Wharton. 
 
I was lucky to get into Wharton. I was rejected for three years, but the act of trying to get in probably helped me grow more than what I learnt in business school itself. 
 
Google was also luck. I didn’t know what to do at that point, and knew somebody who was working there. Somehow got an interview, and got in. 
 
My job was to build apps, and I had to go to Canada to do that. Very few wanted to move there from Mountain View, and I put my hand up. I got the job and it turned out to be an important one for Google. 
 
What’s your take on the Indian media and how they’ve treated the Indian startup ecosystem vis-à-vis what you’ve seen in the Valley? 
To be honest, I think the Indian media is a bit of a circus. 
 
There are some good people, but way too much is written without any substantiation. Whenever you see an article in a leading daily with ‘unnamed sources’, you have to question how they put these things together. Nobody even has the courtesy to call and ask. 
 
Tabloid journalism happens in the US and UK too. But I expect mainstream media to be more ethical about what they write. 
 
Secondly, I think the Indian startup scene gets a lot of scrutiny, and rightfully so. India and Indians have realized this is going to be very incidental to their future. However, they should focus more on strategy than personality. 
 
Does this hero worship not happen in the Bay Area? 
This kind of conversation does not happen as much in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bay+Area&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bay Area</a>. There are gossip columns however. 
 
I remember waking up one day after partying really hard, and went to a Burrito place, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Larry+Page&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Larry Page</a>(Co-founder, Google) was behind me, having some Burritos. Nobody came up to him. They let him be. 
 
In general, the cult of personality is little less there. It maybe because there are too many that are successful, or because the media is more mature there. 
 
How long can it take for Bangalore to become like the Bay Area? 
It takes way less time to put together a company there. 
 
Bay Area is like a cookie cutter machine for startups. There are lawyers, startup consultants and office managers who know exactly what to do. There are places where you can start your office for free. 
 
If we decided to start something today, we’ll have a company, company name, incorporated, office, staff, healthcare and more in less than a week. 
 
In India, it’s a little bit harder. However, it’s become easier, and the government can always work to make it much easier. 
 
Your take on the Indian startup ecosystem 
India has the largest volume of young entrepreneurial people in the world today. The energy here far outstrips that of the Bay Area. However, this ecosystem can do with more role models and mentors. 
 
In the Bay Area, we always had somebody to handhold and teach us. Many people here who have that intense energy don’t have enough mentors who can help them transform that into great companies. 
 
It’s important to have an ecosystem of support and mentorship in the country. That’s what Valley already has. That’s why more billion dollars come out of there than here. 
 
I think in the next decade you’re going to see a Google-like company come out of India, and it’s dumb to not be a part of this. 
 
That’s why I do my office hours, play advisor to a few companies, and might invest a bit also.
